It does start off pretty light hearted and far from a serious tone from the mainline series, but things do start to pick up in the later episodes

I've been enjoying Mon Hun Freedom Unite and now these level 4 hunt are becoming a slog and I was wondering if that's supposed to happen or do I need to step up my game

It's not that I get killed or run out of potions. It's that the enemies just have too much HP. Even after I've learned all the patterns the fight just keeps going and going. I'm currently on this Kushala fight, the wind dragon, and I've used up all my flash bombs, I've been kicking the shit out of him for 20 minutes with my Khezu Greatsword which has pretty good damage and is thunder imbued, which is this dragon's weakness, and the guy is just getting to phase 2.
I've been good with my farming, sword crafting (have one GS of every element and each new upgrade requires a "+" item), my combo list is filled up decently.

Each hunt now takes a while but they're also kinda repetitive which makes me want to take a break after each one. So I end up doing 1-2 hunts a day the most.

Maybe I need to git gud at items? Bring some bombs?

Elder Dragons have a ton of HP in FU your not meant to kill kushala the first time you fight it. It will flee after 25 minutes if you did enough damage, luckily the game will track how much damage you did and it will carry over next time you fight it.

If other hunts besides Elder Dragons are taking forever then thats all on you desu maybe try crafting a stronger weapon and make a armor set that boost your attack
