It's 1941, Nazi Germany just declared war on the USSR. in the Road to Minsk scenario, I take control of Army Group Central for 3 turns with the goal of taking Minsk and hopefully Vitebesk. I start the turn off by using my infantry around the pissa river and brest-livost to rout the soviet forces and make a path for my armor and mechanized divisions. While the Soviets ar fairly weak due to the surprise rule, I still need to be careful due to how many there are so I need to encircle them, although the problem is that my armor needs to race to capture Minsk in time but also are in danger of having their supplies cut by remaining troops, my solution is use half my armored/mechanized to complete a fairly tight encirclement in the center while the rest head east towards Minsk. Since time is of the essence, I decided to just attack the Brest-Livosk fortress s head on and historically it was a tough nut to crack, but I managed to take it on turn 1 without waiting for them to run out of supplies. in the northern part my infantry divisions close in on Kaunas pretty much unopposed, any resistance is easily swept aside. Air Force bombs the shit out of soviet air bases meaning that I'll have complete Air superiority for the remainder of the scenario, as well as giving me lots of victory points for destroyed vehicles and aircraft.

It's the second turn, with the pocket of soviets now weakened I use my infantry to crush the pocket while my armor and mechanized continue east to Minsk at full speed. After finishing off the soviets around Kanaus, the northern infantry divisions head west toward Vilnius and take it, although it was a decent struggle and the soviets have started to organize and are now putting up a firm resistance in rough terrain that really slows down my advance. Due to the giant swamp in the southern part of the map, my troops in the south now have to reroute north and are now trying to protect the flanks of the divisions at the gates of Minsk. Speaking of Minsk, the armor and mechanized divisions arrived at Minsk only to find lots of soviets dug in and around the city. With air support, I've managed to take the outskirts and half encircle the city although all attacks on the city itself were repelled with heavy losses for me. With the failure of capturing Minsk, it now seems like taking Vitebesk and Mogile will not happen especially with more soviet troops flooding in and organizing a resistance.

It's the third turn, soviets have dug in firmly now and any attacks will have to have lots of support and dedication to break through. The north is a lost cause due to the rough terrain, no progress is made. Speaking of progress, Minsk is finally taken but at great cost. Since my infantry were still too far behind to attack Minsk, I had to assault the fortified city with armored and mechanized divisions not suited for urban warfare. I did take the city, but I lost about 100 tanks in taking the city. I secure the southern flank of Minks and manage to encircle a few divisions and end the final turn. turn 3 was the final turn, ending the scenario. Taking Minsk and capturing all the soviets in the pocket at turn 1 gave me lots of VP, however the amount of tanks and men I lost in assaulting Minks gave the Soviets a shitload amount of points, causing the scenario to end in a draw. The moral of the AAR is: don't fucking attack cities with tanks and divisions meant to be mobile and exploit weaknesses and gaps.

there is a LOT of shit under the hood, but for the most part the only thing the player controls is moving, attacking, and occasionally reassigning units. Every thing has a CV, Combat Value, which calculates all the shit that goes into the division like training, morale, equipment, and organization and shits out a nice convenient number that can be used to determine the overall "power" of a division/corp/brigade. The hardest part of the game is proper decision making imo, and you can be shit at stuff like remembering to turn on refit for damaged units if you're at least good at knowing where to attack based off your military knowledge. There are lots of small-medium scale scenarios to learn with.

depends, turns are usually the longest at the start where you either have to plan out encirclement as Germany or reorginize the fucking mess that is the USSR Order of Battle. the first 3 turns in the grand campaign will probably take like 30-60 minutes on each side, while after like 8 turns in the front will have stabilized and turns will take 10-20 minutes. During Winter you can't really do shit so turns take like 5-10 minutes.

I decided to go with a defensive strategy this game.

I probably made a mistake deploying all my units the first round instead of waiting to form a counter comp based on what my opponent deployed. But we'll just see how this goes.

Basically I'm hoping he'll advance North along the road in the East, and fight a war of attrition against me with the support of my fortess artillery, and field artillery behind my Infantry, and heavy infantry units.

In the West I hope to do the same thing, but will be out of range of fortress artillery. Although a destroyer will be there to support them.

My opponent advanced in the west with an engineer, a tank unit, and an Infantry unit.

The Tank and engineer attacked my recon unit (the armored car). They also fired artillery from the town at one of my infantry units.

The Engineering Unit Chased the Recon Unit as it retreated. Resulting in it being in range of two artillery units, a destroyed, a heavy infantry mortar barrage, and 3 infantry units. The recon unit was sent behind the engineer in the jungle to prevent a distant retreat, then artillery units and the destroy opened fire. Reducing the readiness of the unit, while inflicting a few casualties, then two infatry units attacked, causing the engineer to retreat 1 tile, then a Japanese Marine unit attacked the Engineer causing it to be destroyed.

In the East my opponent has not yet reached my front line. I fired artillery at his infantry unit, and attacked with a recon unit.

My opponent decided to use two tank units. We'll see if I regret not purchasing any tank or anti tank units for my forces.

No enemy naval units have been spotted yet. I expect to encounter a patrol boat, and a destroyer.

I'm never going to do a fantasy or supernatural playthrough of CK2, it just doesn't fit with my interests. Even if it made the narrative interesting in the shorter-term, the game would only be even moderately challenging for the first sixty or seventy years, after which it would become impossible to lose.

If there's anything I learned from the last CK2 AAR, it's that a reasonable degree of difficulty is necessary to ensure continued interest in an AAR. Narrative and storytelling is all fine and well, critical even, but if the challenge isn't there then it's simply not gripping, and interest dies off rapidly. Since CK2 is the game I'm best at already, I not only need to avoid options which would make the game easier on me and to put in some incredibly strict house rules, I also need to choose a start which is specifically meant to put me in a difficult position which will take even me a long time to get out of.

Old Gods pagan starts, thanks to elective gavelkind, are similar in difficulty, albeit for different reasons.

I just haven't decided whether I want to commit to a playthrough that long, or that marginal. Jerusalem at least had history; Faste of Dal, or Vaisvilkas of Lithuania, don't.

My opponent appears to have not purchased any Marines. So I'll likely be holding the mountains in the center with just two Japanese Marines.

I discovered the American Destroyer when it advanced along the coast, and fired at an infantry unit. It's taken 2 points of damage, and is currently in Coastal Artillery range. I'd say that I'll probably gain naval supremacy is he decides to stay and take a naval fight under the current conditions.

West of the Mountains my line is holding fine. And I've layed a minefield in the Jungle. This tile will be tempting for him to send an Infantry Unit into. However, since his engineer is dead. and it appears he has not purchased additional engineering units. He is currently unable to see that I've placed mines in the Jungle Hex.

East of the Mountains. I've left a damage Recon Unit in front of my lines hoping that he will attack it again with his tank and advance on my line. If he does he will take fire from 3 artillery units, and 3 entrenched infantry units. (Sandbags represent entrenchment levels, each turn a unit does not move the higher the entrenchment level reaches.

I'm pretty happy about both flanks at the moment, although its a bit early to tell what will happen with both of them.

The only concern I have at the moment is the artillery my opponent has, has a much greater range than mine. I will eitheir need to disband the shorter range artillery units, and upgrade the medium ones, or hope he doesnt turn his artillery pieces on mine.

No losses for either side this turn.
