Yeah, that's a cool thing about nu-Abyss. Basically, exits (and staircases doing deeper into the Abyss) will eventually pop up based on XP earned. For a low level character, you can kill a couple of Abyss enemies and generate an exit.

In DCSS, if I'm going to play an air mage, should I train all three of the skills Spellcasting, Conjuration, and air magic? Or should I just train air magic since it basically does the same thing as the other two plus extra air magic damage.

Would the answer also apply to other schools of magic?
>>
>>180596676
you have to train everything lad
you can cut corners and skip conjurations if you want to go for tornado purity
>>
>>180596676

>tornado, the greatest level 9 spell in the game

You mean the only level 9 spell aside from dragon's call which has a cooldown period? That's great for when a tormentor and hell sentinel come into LOS
>>
>>180596676
Spellcasting is only as good as 1/4 of the average of the other spellschools used.

Spellcasting also adds to your maximum MP but only if it is the highest out of SC/Invo/Evo since it just takes the highest value out of those three.

But it's main purpose is that each half level of spellcasting adds one more spell slot to learn new spells.

So basically unless you have really great spellcasting aptitude and the extra magic points are cheap to you, you should raise it to the exact number you need to learn the spell you want right now, and then stop.

in terms of Air Mages you should train Air until you can cast your most important spells without miscast penalties, then switch to 50% air and 50% (defensive skill which is probably dodging). Keep that up until your Air magic is at 10, stopping to train spellcasting when you need to or to get secondary spell schools up to 2 or 3 for the quick boost in spellpower.

>>
>>180600569
wow what a nice non statement that doesn't commit you to any idea
it's almost like you're trying to backpedal from your previous retarded comment now that a graph is showing that the top 15% players learn 15 spc at xl15, or 20 spc, at xl20, far in excess of what's needed to memorize the spells.

of course if you actually played the game and managed to make it to zot as a caster this would mirror your experiences as it's really hard to cast those level 9 spells without at least 20-22 in spc, conj, and elemental school unless you have dank int
>>
>>180600851
man how is that in excess of what is necessary to memorize spells at all? it sounds like you're just a badplayer who doesn't pick up a shitton of spells midgame
>>
>>180601189
also if you're getting spellcasting over 20 before maxing out your other spellschools to cast a level 9 spell then you are literally just terrible at math.
>>
>>180601189
you have it the other way around, you pick up those shitton of spells because you have the extra spell levels because you had to skill spc
you have no wins
>>
>>180601294
skills cost rises exponentially with skill levels, by the time you have 22 conj 22 elemental school it's extremely cheaper to get 20 spc instead of trying to get sl27 in both which will take you a long time
zero wins
>>
Players underground can't see the approximate time without a watch, but can still wait until dawn.

Muh realism.
>>
>>180601515
raising spc only has 1/4 the effect on fail rate and power that schools have, and it takes a lot of levels for spc to cost 1/4 as much as schools.
>>
>>180601515
man you can look on the skill screen itself

if it doesn't cost less than half as much as it costs to raise fire or conj to raise spellcasting then it's inefficient to raise spellcasting to cast firestorm.

the formula uses [(spellcasting/2)+(AvgSpellschools*2)]*3 to derive the value for skill that's subtracted from the failure rate base value. if you can't understand this kind of middleschool math you are literally stupid.

>and it takes a lot of levels for spc to cost 1/4 as much as schools.
no it doesn't
once again you don't understand exp requirement growth
look at this here, it takes the about same amount of exp to go from 20 to 26 as it would to go from 1 to 20, assuming aptitudes are the same.

even the graph is showing the top 15% of players are getting over 20 spc at xlevels where getting 27 in both conj and elemental school are impossible

why are you even giving me the muh math rhetoric when you literally are doing the math wrong
you are retarded my man
>>
>>180602393
it has 1/4th the effect of the /average of all spell schools/

it's pretty poor for single-school spells but it's actually 3/4ths as xp-efficient as real schools for tri-school spells

Getting to 21 in a skill costs 15750
Getting to 27 costs 29750
Spellcasting is half as good as each spellschool for a two school spell.
15750*2=31500
31500>29750
therefore if you raise spellcasting higher than 20 before maxing Fire and Conj to learn Firestorm, you are bad and stupid. Pharoahs and Dog-Girls weep with shame when you open your mouth.
>>
>>180604749
spellcasting has additional benefits as well though
for the price of being 5% less xp-efficient for your spell success and spell power, you also get a boost to your maximum MP, your number of spell slots, and your success rates for the various other utility spells you have memorized like rmsl, stoneskin, and phase shift

>>180604749
>15750*2=31500
>31500>29750
this is the most fucking retarded math i have ever seen in my entire life
i think your brain should be analyzed as an example of how people fuck up math
getting to 21 FROM ZERO gives you 21 spc levels which are worth 10.5 regular conj/elmental school level worth of skill levels
going from 20 to 26 costs AS MUCH AS THAT while only giving you 6 skill levels worth
your retarded advice didn't specify exactly when you should stop skilling spc, but it doesn't matter, because skilling spc from 18 to 21 or from 10 to 21, it's always going to be worth it at some point before you manage to max out the other skills

>>
>>180614482
Even at like 3 invo Sif gives more MP. And if you evoke feet after using divine powers you can cast bolts every third turn, entirely free. Vehumet isn't even good anymore.
>>
>>180608894
Get Vamp, Blink, Sap, Flying, and Fire Immunity if possible. Then apply 1 more empower before plentying.
This extra empower is so that your nagas can learn an extra good talent like negation, haste, or healing.
Normally having nagas learn spells is not great, but when you have a harem that can haste and heal eachother and negate enemies it's basically unstoppable.
>>
>>180615779
Haste is iffy, though, because of buggy enemy AI. Normally they are reluctant to negate and discord your friends -- unless your buddies have buffs like haste and protect on them. You need reflection if they learn that.

Probably invisibility also works, but invisible melee allies are not very good.
>>
What would you say the best god for DrTm is? I tried Ru, and it didn't go amazing, though I think I got a bit unlucky with the sacrifices (The second set of sacrifices was between an eye, stealth, or words). Even though sacrificing your hand seems like it would be a no brainier, the loss of that extra ring slot still hurts. Ru's aura was really useful, but I suspect she really isn't amazing for hybrid characters.

I wouldn't be surprised if Usk was strong, but hes pretty boring.
>>
>>180616502
When you have 7 or 8 nagas its really okay if you get a couple negated. The only hard attributes to find deep and sap and vamp.
>>
>>180616716
tm is just an otabber with big buff spells so any otab god works
okawaru is always good because of how well UC scales with skill investment

Man

I just spent like 20 minutes looking at IVAN's item data to find out that Maces are apparently OP now and have better blocking than everything. You can't block at all with whips (okay), and almost all weapons are flagged two-handed except long swords, short blades, and whips, making them crap for dex talented characters (okay).

So if you got strength talent you can just immediately decide to dual wield two maces forever without hesitation, and if you got speed talent you basically have to use a shield because there are no fast weapons that can block.

You can use a halberd or a big two handed sword, but then any combat that actually matters will be reduced to quickly assessing whether or not your weapon is harder than the enemy's and will therefor break their equipment allowing you to hit them.

You almost might as well just use a shield no matter what and then just decide whether you want to use a Mace, a Long Sword, or a Two-handed Sword in the other hand.

There's no reason to use whips because they just fucking break all the fucking time.

Which is a lot of stuff I wish I had known sooner and probably should have looked up right away in the first place.

Maybe a heavily enchanted and hardened Whip of Thievery would work with a shield.

It sure as fuck doesn't work without one.

Nah, it is. The most obvious example is earlygame wights, who are relatively harmless if you luck into an early ring of positive energy (and thus rarely take off more than 0.2 skill total), versus having no rN against, where they can take like .5 to 1 skill total.

Melee range (A)Liches are another example.

>>
>>180648125
I once escaped zot with the orb before realizing that i'd been meleeing dudes with my staff of energy the whole time.
>>
>>180648309
If you gotten 2 or 3 runes atleast it shouldnt be that big of a problem, the amulet is pretty good and RMsl is godlike later on against all the shit you get thrown, since you found it in labyrinth youre probably in d:10 or deeper or in lair/orc so its not worth using yet
If you dont have any other source of rElec use that, if you have shoals, it should be the quickest switch of your life no matter what
>>
>>180648309
Ask yourself if you even need this.
rElec is really only good for Zot, you can deal with spark wasps and shock serpents with hexing wands and you can just run from titans.
rMsl is nice I guess but if your armor and resistances aren't terrible, it doesn't matter much either.
>>
How important is Sinv for a three runes? Cause I sure wish I could shed my scale mail for plate but it's the only item I got with Sinv on it. Is there anything worse than unseen horrors to worry about, considering I'm in Vaults right now?
>>
>>180651009
Not that big of a deal, the biggest threat that can get you is unseen horror, unique with invis, ghost moth or lich with invis spellbook but it all depends on your race/background, level, etc..
>>
>>180651009
Invisible liches, vampire knights and aliches are pretty damn hard to kill. Invisible vampire mages and boggarts are pretty hellish summoning experiences.
Invisible ghost moths are pretty bad if you are a caster.
If you know what you are doing around these monsters you can usually deal with them without SInv by manipulating LOS against them.
>>
>>180651009
It's annoying to play without it (invisible summoners hurrrrr) and a bit dangerous in Zot, less so if you're a huge meleedude steamrolling through everything, much more so if you are a caster. It's not absolutely necessary at all though. Find it on a ring and swap it in when you really need it.
>>
>>180633018

Eins: Do i need Kewne on floor 40? Or does he just appear outta nowhere if i don't have him?

Twei: Should i go back to town and stash my eggs? I've gotten all the new mons from floor 30 upwards sitting in my inventory, and i'm a little afraid beating the game makes me lose them. It's just so tedious Baronging for Roches again...

A big reason why I rec Demise is because he has videos of current versions, so you can see how he plays in the current meta (0.19/0.20/trunk). zxc is great to watch in a general "how do I approach Crawl and win most characters safely" kind of way, but his streak videos are confined to 0.16 and 0.17 -- not exactly old, but not exactly new, either (for instance, Strength weight was removed in 0.18; IIRC, zxc actually describes the benefits of Dex in his GrGl video, but if you play 0.18 or newer, that's not really the case anymore).

Overall, like even the guide at >>180672968 says, you have to know the context of advice/video/gameplay and know how to apply it to your own case.

I'd say Tomb if you're an ant, and Tartarus if you're not an ant.

Tomb is easy if you just yakkity sax through it with blink/tele scrolls and pog relays, but ant can't really do that and has no way out once it gets surrounded by all the summons.

Tartarus is filled with summoning monsters and things that use torment, and the boss is really really fast and uses silence making it hard and dangerous to ninja.

If you're playing a really slow game where you get all the XP and auto-explore every floor then they're all really easy and boring because you just kill everything and go home.

Actually they do but you need to eat a large quantity to make it permanent. So you can get permanent telecontrol by eating blink dogs, but you'll probably never be able to eat enough floating eyeball to get permanent ESP.

You end up really needing that telecontrol too, pretty much right after you can get it.

Let me be more clear: it was a joke. A schtick. It's the kind of joke that a person tells once they've overcome their insecurities and achieved absolute confidence in themselves, and the reason that joke is told is to extend a hand to those who were once in the same place. A person in a sane emotional state can understand that failure is an inevitable facet of life. You learn from your failures and become a stronger and wiser person. The process of failure is itself transformative and creates new growth beyond even what applies to the situation. But if you're depressed, then failure, loneliness, emptiness and apathy, those sorts of things, they sort of just well up and wash over you.

And that's fine really.

When you try to bottle up emotions, real frustrations, you do some real damage to yourself. It's really not such a bad thing to let yourself drown in the flood. The question is what do you do once you go to that place? Do you greet it with abject shame and reject everything about yourself? Do you cripple your brain by labeling those neurons with pain and humiliation and turn yourself off piece by piece? Do you throw a tantrum and demand the world compensate you?

The real answer is to take everything. Consume the value and potential of everything about yourself, even the perspective from your lowest, deadest point. Because you have to decide "where do I go from here?"

When you lose at a roguelike, don't cry, don't hate yourself, don't hurt yourself for no reason. There are lots of people who felt the same thing, you just need to remember yourself and where you're going from here. What do you do next? It's okay to say "man I failed at everything" and not feel bad about it. Lay back and relax. Look in the mirror, what can you make that person do next? What are you still capable of? Everything starts from here.

I have sudden surge of interest in DoomRL. Angel of Marksmanship UltraViolence. Going for Sharpshooter Technician. Anyone has advice on assembly (weapon, but might as well aim for anything, aside from tactical boots)? Last succesful dude reached military base and died from elites and lack of medkits (fuck souped up sergeants) while still using basic pistol (made a highpower version in base, but with 4 shots only it seems like a sidegrade). Traits: SoG->SoG->SoG->EE->EE/WK>WK/EE. After a dozen of deaths, actually sort of can clear Hell's Arena now and decent success with Chained Court.
>>
>>180742715
As a minotaur you can switch weapons quite effectively if you find a good one.
For example, if you had found a morningstar, it probably would have been good to switch to M&F.
War axes and hand axes kind of really suck if they dont have high enchant early, and they wont last long even if they do have high enchant.
Even if you want to stick with axes, crosstraining still lets you use maces&flails weapons or polearms half-decently.

Don't zap unid'd good wands unless you're desperate or you have tons of wands. You had 3 scrolls of ID you should have used on them.

You should probably have just walked back up the stairs and taken another staircase, dealt with the hydra later.
>>
>>180742817
Eh, I'm not >>180742315, but that actually is kind of bad advice.

His goal, first and foremost, should be to get away from the hydra. Since he's on a upwards staircase, that's solved.

And then he should find some maces, or a flaming brand axe. Or begin training Evo when he heads down a different staircase.

Zapping with acid would be 1) a waste of a charge on a really good wand, and 2) still put you in danger of actually fighting a hydra when you'd be creating more heads with each one of your melee attacks (and he doesn't have any range besides the wands).

Iceblast would actually be better the acid, since it'd maybe slow the hydra down. But, again, why attack a hydra with a suboptimal setup when you could just run away?
>>
>>180742715
>And.. Well I usually assume once I pick up a weapon I should ONLY be using that type. Is.. That wrong?
Sort of, if you havent cleared lair, having a fire branded slicing weapon like a long blade or axe is a gods gift from heaven for hydras and since axes crosstrain maces & flail, using a mace to kill them, if you havent found a fire-branded weapon, is good to use then as an alternative

>>180743478
And i said all of that in my comment, i suggested acid because it can 2shot the hydra, getting the slow on the ice blast one is a roulette if it would happen or not
>>
>>180743291
I went back up, identified all the wands, tried to zap him, and yknow I died. Because I figured i didnt need to use the scroll of fear and he did a biiiit more damage than I thought he did. And alright, that's understandable, I thought axes might be good for a fighter because if you're overwhelmed you're cleaving everything in sight
>>180743619
So train like longswords, and also maces? Or maybe just maces.. I mean i suppose if I find a good fire sword early on. I didnt even know crosstraining was a thing, I've only ever seen it mentioned just now
>>
>>180743791
Nah, training just axes is fine, no need to train maces or long sword, you just keep the weapon on the side for stuff like these when they happen, obviously running away/using another staircase to go down is the smartest thing to do
Also dont ever use hand axes, they are shit, unless its a flame brand for hydras, thats the only excuse to use it honestly
>>
>>180743958
That one had chopping, I figured the damage was the same and it just swung faster/better accuracy. I'm starting another run with flails, maybe that'll be better, who knows. I usually don't have issues with them but fuck me they also usually arent 8-9 heads when they first spawn
>>
>>180743619
>i suggested acid because it can 2shot the hydra

Yeah, if you've trained Evocations. There's no reason to assume he'd done so.

And you'd still get RNG from /acid even hitting, whereas Iceblast is at least a guaranteed hit due to having 3x3 area-of-effect.

The biggest tip would've been to just get away and stay away, since that's a bad setup for dealing with hydra.

The worst part is the only other way to reliably get copyrighted music is to torrent it through private trackers, which can take a while, since most are invite-based, and/or require some sort of ratio between seeding and leeching so most people spend their their time just uploading for their tracker overlords.

shitty situation tbqh

>Would a roguelike with JRPG like turn based combat be still considered one?
a big part of roguelikeyness is that the combat and map exploration etc are all part of the same gameplay system
if you just bump into a pack of orcs and then just change to a battle screen to fight their party instead of e.g. being able to lure them to a chokepoint or a trap or something, it's not really the same gameplay.
this is also what "non-modal" is supposed to mean when rlg isnt shitposting about it

story doesn't work well in randomly generated games and story doesn't work well when you have to go back to the beginning and see everything again if you die. roguelikes have both of these elements so they tend to be pretty bad at being story-based games
>>
DDA's storytelling is kino.
>>
>>180760178
>same gameplay system
>being able to lure them to a chokepoint or a trap or something
That is a very valid point.

I also see your point regarding the story. I just thought maybe there could be junk loot, like torn books, or small notes on items, maybe eavesdropping on enemies from time to time to put together the pieces of the events around you. This could also be randomized, so with each restart you would get something new. Of course, it cannot be as randomized as items or enemies or levels, but still.

Thank you for your help!

>>
>>180760883
Story doesn't work in roguelikes but lore about the setting, about history, about the world around the player can still be fine.

Basically the player is discovering background knowledge that is neat + interesting but not essential to the gameplay and not directly related to what the player character is currently doing.

Some of them have a story: ToME4 is probably the most obvious example, and has lore pieces lying around or for sale like you mention. It kind of works, though once you've read them all there's not much interest in finding them again (and in ToME4's case it isn't that amazing the first time either). Usually there are just item or monster descriptions the player can piece together to come up with the lore.

>This could also be randomized, so with each restart you would get something new
I'm going to assume an explicitly stated, procedurally generated story is really hard unless you're going for mix-and-match silliness.

In general, whether or not you use macros or mess with your rcfile, you should probably adjust your spells (= and then s) to mnemonics that you can remember (e.g. level 1 starting spell would be z so you just do zz; "throw icicle" to either t or i; Blink to B; etc. etc).

It's fun to brutalize monsters with out of depth drops, or mangling the mechanics, or using meta knowledge to castrate them.

I like how the gods and flavor text of DCSS gives it some fluff but it's not gameplay relevant.

I like how Cata is basically "new england + zombies" with little notes and shit thrown in.

When do I want to figure out what shit I've picked up? (scrolls/potions/jewlery/etc) I haven't made it very far with any character yet, but it feels like I'm getting better. Still there are times when I die and see that I had some sick weapon or ring in my inventory that I was too scared to equip, but probably would have saved me from dying the way I did.
Do I wait until I have identify/uncurse scrolls on me? Because thats what I've been doing for equipment at least. Potions and scrolls I've been popping out of desperation in hopes they're helpful.

Also should I be picking deities? I've read their altars' and stuff when I come across them but they almost never seemed right for the character I was playing at the time. Hard to balance the risk/reward when I barely know what the fuck I'm doing.
>>
>>180792892

If we're talking DCSS, honestly just read the wiki for things like gods.

DCSS is not the type of game where you'd want to avoid spoilers, in fact it's very punishing if you try to play that way.

General rule though is you want to press your panic buttons before you start panicking. Most panic buttons work better at full health than they do at low.

If you're just playing melee though, Trog, Okawaru, or Uskayaw are the best or easiest gods for beginners.
>>
>>180792892
Also, not all scrolls and potions are of equal rarity. If you see a bunch of the same scroll, there is a good chance it's going to be identify. Similarly with potions, if you see a bunch of the same potion, theres a good chance it'll be curing (this can be a life saver if you get badly poisoned early on).

And yes, gods are incredibly strong. It's perfectly fine to hold out until the temple to choose an altar, but I wouldn't recommend waiting longer than that. Okawaru and Trog are two gods to look out for if you are playing a melee dude, and Vehement is very straightforward if you playing a mage.
>>
>>180794010
A lot of combos are sorta that way

read-id every stack of 2+ scrolls each time you clear a level. (doing it on a clear level keeps you from putting yourself in danger with ?tele or ?noise)
use scrolls of ID on potions, or quaff-id the biggest stacks
ID jewelry or glowing weapons/armor by equipping them, but only after you've identified scrolls of remove curse

>>
>>180796751
the player is basically an invisible manager who hires adventurers, forms parties, sends them into dungeons, etc
the individual party members can die but the player himself still keeps shit like money, unlocked dungeons, upgrades in town, etc

having the party members disappear forever when they die is about as "permadeath" as losing your weapons when they run out of durability in a jrpg
>>
>>180797060
It's funny/sad, too, because a lot of the improvements are intended to make creating variants (and probably by the same logic, upgrading existing variants) a *lot* easier. But because most variants already have hackneyed solutions from working with the older versions, transitioning is a bitch.

PCB with vanilla 4.0.5/4.1.0 UI tweaks would be 10/10 best fucking game and would truly eclipse DCSS as /rlg/'s roguelike of choice.

HOW DO I SURVIVE DIS

EVERY TIME I GO IN DISPATER GETS A DOUBLE TURN LCS DESPITE HAVING 30 EV
>>
>>180813737
Yeah. I mean a sword has the best damage of any weapon for it's low strength requirement until flails or war pikes, I think?
Spears are outstanding for the corridor fighting you will do a lot of, and have good accuracy until you can use a war pike, and with a good runic, can sometimes stand up to war pikes (which can't be runed).
Whips are fucking amazing for sneak attacks from multiple tiles away and have so many runic synergies it's not even funny.
Rapiers have lunge and two attacks per round. Enough said.
Axes are pretty obvious.
Maces do the most damage aside from warhammers, but can have a runic.
Then the heavy weapons are all straight forward. Silflanking, piercing, cleaving, highest DPT, hueg sneak attacks.

Daggers' sneak attack bonus does not make up for their horrible base damage. You're better off wielding a mace or a sword for stabs.

>>180814591
Yep, that's what he means by silflanking.
>>
>>180814306
Low tier weapons are mainly worth it because:
You can usually wield them decently without sufficient strength (a sword at 12 strength is often totally fine).
They can have runics.
You can invest a little in them early and have a really powerful item at low depths.

Still, if you have 19 strength, you probably want to wield your +0 broadsword over your +1 sword.

Also your trap problem is why teaching monsters flying is very important.

I usually take the first break when I get delay to 1 and switch to a few points in the defensive skills (fighting/armor/shield/dodging whichever fit you current situation). Sometimes I go directly to mindelay when I find some nice defense early.
>>
>>180815745
Why would you not aim for mindelay (especially on minotaur)? I guess it'd make sense for something ridiculous like exec axe or triple sword. Most other stuff has acceptable mindelay skill of ~15.

I know it seems like an odd question but in crawl it's literally: auto explore and get ready to go downstairs/upstairs then try another stair case.

>>180871129
it's not annoying at all it's tactical
>>
>>180871692
Also 1k extra in Vaults:5 because muh items, none of which I ended up using.

If someone wonders what I was using before I got GDA in Zot, it was a +1 rF+ chain mail for early game and Kryia's randart (+7 rC+ scale mail with potion heals x2) for all of the rest.
>>
>>180871381
if only it wasn't a +1 short sword
>>
>>180871834
no but you see it is technically optimal to constantly recast stoneskin while autoexploring so if you get into a fight you already have it on from the beginning instead of having to spend a turn casting it
>>
>>180871482
How high was it naturally?
But probably yes.
>>
>>180872043
Just +1
>>
>>180872030
that's bad for your tumcount
>>
>>180868876
only MR++++ is actual safety from bad spells, and even then some stray blue shit in Vaults can mark you (1%), maybe random pan lords with Para could get you too on a bad roll. If you want total immunity, MR+++++ is needed, but MR++++ in most cases is an effective immunity as well. MR+++ can still be beaten, especially in lower ranges.
>>
>>180871834
It's about as tactical as tabbing (as in: don't think, just press the key), except you need to press more than one key.
>>
>>180872113
only autists and paedophiles count tums
the game is not balanced around gofast because 99% of players do not care about gofast
>>
>>180872413
sometimes you walk away before you press the key so that you don't get banged by more than one dude
>>
>>180872553
I wanted to say that I'm neither of these, but then I realize that just as I'm a halfway into being a hardcore turncount player, I'm probably halfway into being those two as well, considering my social skills and all the /ss/I saw. Oooops.
>>
>>180872553
muslims can't into turncounts anon
>>
Found +9 fullplate of ponderousness and not sure if I should use that or just enchant regular plate until I find a decent art or randart full plate

I feel like this guy is a lot harder to kill now

he doesn't even have elec resist

I wish I'd had some skunk grenades or something jeez
>>
9 ac is probably not worth losing your ability to literallywalkaway

spend your enchants first on aux slots like boots and gloves since they are less likely to get replaced. in the meantime hopefully you have a nice ego plate or chain to wear
>>
>>180878448
It's not actually 9 AC, but instead 1d9 AC.
>>
>>180878547
+9 enchantment on an armor adds 9 to your ac

but having 9 ac only reduces incoming damage by 1d9

I want to get into Elona but every time I play and want to embark on an adventure, I get my ass handed and die at level 6 or some retarded shit. I searched up guides for beginners but they always have me travelling to different towns and accept quests and usually, I quit because I get bored. Any tips?
>>
>>180878831
sounds like you find elona's gameplay boring anon, try playing a different game
>>
>>180877924
just get a QDA or a PDA
>>
>>180878610
>>180878547
the difference between 23 AC and 32 AC is a lot less than 1d9, guys
>>
>>180879057
QDA? Pearl Dragon Armor?
>>
>>180879272
yeah, that's what I said, they're way better than plate
>>
>>180878972
Really? I really like how I can open the game is and the combat doesn't seem that different from any other roguelike. Despite dying early on, I have fun just exploring the world and dungeon crawling. I'm just wondering if there are any other strategies that'll allow me to go far and keeps the quest farming to a minimum (i.e spending several hours doing billboard quests)
>>
>>180879375
What's QDA short for, dammit
>>
>>180879272
quicksilver dragon armour and pearl dragon armour.

Reminder that renaming the dragon armours to dragon scales was pointless as hell.
>>
>>180879970
quicksilver
>>
>>180877924
Crawl?
Plate armor is overrated, the only good thing about it is that it's common and you don't have to wait god knows how long for 15+ ER dragon scales (which all outperform plate by a lot).
>>
>>180879272
>>180879970
>>180880039
The only time you want to wear QDA is when your game is devoid of enchant armor scrolls and/or any MR items. Not that you will find QDA before lower Depths and long after you find a better armor, but yes, it's an option sometimes.
>>
>>180879164
it's the difference between 1d23 and 1d32
which is, admittedly, a bit less than 1d9
>>
Stop playing Crawl.

As a former CS grad student, I can say that U of A has a very good program in certain areas - AI in particular. But the URR dev's research appears to be centered in some interdisciplinary bullshit of his own making.

He's not a developer (he's got a phobia of actually releasing something), and he's not a computer scientist, either.
>>
>go down to Vault:5
>cast spellforged servitor
>cast ignition
>spend several minutes scrolling through all the battle text of that one turn
>everything is dead
Holy shit this spell is fucking awesome
>>
>>180885005
I was more suggesting that the people at UofA and UofC are a special kind of bullshit people. Lots of lies and politics and ass-kissing and back-scratching and gas-lighting. They all want to know you're one of them and you're expected to be conservative af and not rock the oil boat.

Academia is a shit sandwich to being with but in Alberta you can expect it to be extra thick.

URR dev will not survive as a chess piece.
>>
how do you fucking deal with a two headed ogre wielding a dire flail and a giant fucking club, they do insane damage and it seems like a dice roll whether or not you win, because the damage is so big you cant heal through it
>>

Thanks for the politikin now discuss roguelikes.
>>
>>180887639
Since it's a roguelike game instead of an IF, you aren't always next to an enemy just because you're in the same general area. You can exploit this fact by having one or more squares between you and the enemy (in this case a two headed ogre), which prevents it from using its attack actions against you.
>>
>>180889816
But then how do I attack it
>>
>>180887639
>>180889816
You'd realistically want two with a 2HO.

I know it's gonna be another case of "humans are bad at RNG", but I swear 2HO get ****energy randomization**** that lets them move two squares and get a hit in more often than other monsters.
>>
>>180890000
Feel free to search the code for the special case in which 2HO move more quickly than advertised.
>>
>hungry
>spend most of the day digging in the bushes for wild vegetables
>discover I can't actually cook them since they need a pot
>resort to chasing down rattlesnakes since they are one of the few things I can both outrun and kill
Maybe trying to go innawoods with a computer nerd was a mistake
>>
>>180889901
the goal of the game is "collect the orb of zot", not "kill the two-headed ogre"

Elona+ 1.69 is out.
Speaking of which, how much the E+Custom does for the game? I know it changes some mechanics but I am more interested in translation aspect - is it worth waiting for it to get to 1.69 as well?

Also, apparently Magellan still fiddles with Prospector - the best space exploration, survey and prospecting roguelike out there. Why is /rlg/ never mentioning that one? Is it that niche and forgotten?
