Well yo probably sitting in front of the table in the dinning hall scratching your beard thinking, i just want some damn peach while eating.

Well your in luck today, your waiting is over.
We have made great innovative strides to make the perfect portable soundproofing device.. This machine will block out all and every sound for the user even capable of blocking out the high pitch screeching of dying ellfs.
Its smooth design makes it easy to transport and its made of a special multi layered leather that act as a outer barrier and a final lead insert that blocks out even kobold mind tricks.
the entire device is worn like a hat and is painted in stylish purple to give it that fancy look.
Its also comes with our special bone sinew clamps and straps that will securely attach it to the head of the wearer.

>Clamps might be worn out over time rendering them static, proving impossible to open.

How much have the RAW files changed since 40.24? I want to import my old modded files.
>>
>>180563720
There's some new tags for creatures playable in adventure, also some animals were slightly tweaked. I think there's more animal people and giant variations, although that might have been added pre-40.24.
I wouldn't straight up copy over the old RAWs, but there shouldn't be any glaring incompatibilities outside of the adventure thing.
>>
>>180564050
not him, but doesn't using faulty raws (i.e. the old adventurer tokens) sometimes crash the game?

In adventurer mode, is it possible to become both a necromancer and a vampire? If not, which one is preferable?

You can. I like necro because it works better with fortress mode and it makes it possible to kill archangel without cheese.

It's fully possible. In fact, being a vampire makes getting necromancy trivial since all you have to do is walk to the tower and grab the slab.

Am I the only one wh wishes Toady would improve the way fires work?

They should be way more dangerous and unpredictable than they currently are. Air currents should be taken into account, and players shouldn't necessarily be safe from fire just because the fort is dug out of rock.

Players should also be able to found some kind of fire department to fight the fires. It could use the same system as the new locations.

>Becoming a necromancer also freezes your attributes so that they cannot rust or be increased. Therefore, it might be wise to raise your attributes to a high level before becoming a necromancer. (However, this does not seem to be happening in the current version, probably due to a bug). (Or it's a design choice. Because let's be honest, just because you're a necromancer doesn't mean you can't learn new things, right?)

Fire is mostly fine the way it is. Once it can consume nonfiresafe constructions and natural walls it will behave pretty naturally. There's no reason that building/digging with firesafe materials shouldn't be an adequate defense against wildfires. We could certainly do with a means of starting fires on demand in fort mode, though.

Just the underworld in general for me. Think about it. Like really try to visualize how the underworld must look. A massive wasteland of slade and ash, lit by glowing pits that dimly illuminate towering, monstrous figures that lumber through the eternal twilight. Every other cave layer has some ecosystem and natural logic to it. But Hell doesn't. Its just feels like an entirely different reality superimposed over our own, that if let loose is absolutely guaranteed to end all life as we know it.

A lot of people have. It's really easy to cheese the initial wave of demons, and possible to defeat them without cheese with a lot of planning and a lot of fighters. After that it's just securing a foothold against the occasional random spawn. Sometimes hell even does most of the work for you, having a bunch of soft demons and a single deadly duster type among them will result in a lot of friendly kills.

So I got sieged again, this time by a smaller force composed of mostly dwarves?
They were hostile dwarves alongside goblins with human bone rings and trinkets, pretty disgusting, im assuming they were kidnapped children.
I actually lost a man this siege despite the fact it was half the size of the last siege. A poor fort Guard (Poorly armoured guys with spears meant to guard the entrance to the caverns and kill crundles and the like) got decimated by the numbers of them all.
Something about that hammerdwarf who blew up the crundles chest is amazing, I nicknamed her armstrong, and nearly every single hit she did caused a limp to explode in gore or the like with her silver warhammer.

The start was tough because of no bins (and copper bins, too). That's pretty much it.

It's because the image is generated only when the player views it. And when it's generated it chooses from everything available at the time the player viewed it. So it can be of itself. Or even of future events. I wonder if a dwarf has ever engraved his own death on an artifact lel.

I was thinking of finding a taiga near a volcano and using lava to provide heating in wood log cabins. Maybe have a herd of reindeer for food, and farm blueberries, cranberries, and bilberries (those are the only things that grow in tundras, and even if it's just a taiga it adds to the flavor).

That reminds me of something I read somewhere, which said that although it might be true that everyone has one good book in them, but nobody ever said that everyone has two good books in them, and editors tend to see a lot of aimless novels where the protagonist is a writer who is struggling to come up with a second book after modest success with his first, written by authors who have published exactly one modestly successful book.

There's a very good chance that the next update will be a save-compat-break, so don't count on being able to send soldiers out on missions from any fort you've got in the current version.

>>180598525
That explanation would make plenty of sense if it weren't for things like >>180427108 unless it's just statues that work differently from other types of images.

>>180599869
How quickly the weapons in traps break depends on the weapons, their material and that of their targets. Apparently serrated glass disks are practically guaranteed to break immediately against any armored target, while I imagine adamantine weapon traps would be quite durable.

>>180604757
The only methods I know are either saturation, which is expensive and unreliable (probably an understatement), or keeping the goods away from the sticky fingers of your cupidinous denizens, which in the case of things like jewelry is fortunately as simple as not allowing it into any stockpiles, since they don't seem to claim it except when they're SUPPOSED to be hauling it and bringing it to the trade depot doesn't let them claim it. For clothes you have to either make sure to forbid it as soon as it gets made, or maybe keep it locked away from everyone but the clothier until it's ready to be traded. Seems like a headache either way.

I'm no expert, it's just what I read on here about artifacts telling the future and having images of themselves. Statues may be a whole different story.
>>
>>180610251
>That explanation would make plenty of sense if it weren't for things like >>180427108 → # unless it's just statues that work differently from other types of images.
No, he's right, and statues aren't an exception. Why would a statue depicting a historical event make any difference? It's implicit in the premise that the pool of historical events is referenced the first time the image is viewed that it's checking all qualifying historical events, not just the ones that have happened since the onject was made.

Best idea I've had
>build extra magma forges, set them all to dabbling skill level max
>set all my "serious" magma forges to novice skill level min

End result: All my migrants are taking turns raising their weaponsmithing to novice, then never touching a forge again
Now all of them have an extremely useful moodable skill so they stop making shitty artifact siltstone figurines
>>
>>180613903
It'd be better to set the serious forges to adequate minimum to prevent the newbs from taking weaponsmith jobs and making low-quality weapons (assuming you have more higher-level weaponsmiths).
>>
>>180614146

That wasn't the picture I meant to link, I have an artifact somewhere with an image of a forgotten beast being struck down and I was the one who killed it but I can't remember the name now.

The other bit I forgot while trying to recall that name was this: a specified image has certain differences from random ones, they said "make a statue which contains x" so it went through and grabbed something which they knew about involving x, which was the marriage of x and y, with y being the scupltor themself.

How the dang do you guys do job management ,especially with higher populations? Even with DwarfTherapist I find it difficult to keep track of things. I currently just use autolabor and disable it if I need something like mass constructing or mining done

>>180624759
Rudimentary "caste" system: Disable auto-labors completely so every immigrant is a hauler until assigned otherwise. When activating a labor on any dwarf, replace their first name with it.
Dorfs are thus divided into Nicknamed and Not Nicknamed. Nicknameds are guaranteed to always have a defined job and Not Nicknameds can be promoted or drafted at any time safely.

What are the best DF mods?
>>
>>180624759
I just v p l as migrants enter the map. Tweak later as needed, which isn't often. Most tweaks I make are just disabling hauling labors on dwarves who need to focus on their primary profession, adding mining and/or engraving to dwarves who've already mooded in a skill I preferred, and tossing randos into the fishing/plant gathering rotation when I decide to have a fishing or flower picking season. If you catch your dwarves while they're still new arrivals you can set your labor force up however you want it before they ever do a single job. If you don't know how you want your labor force set up, that's a different problem altogether from the logistics of labor management, and not a problem you can fix by trying to address it from that angle.

I tried listening to the latest interview Roguelike Radio made with him, but constantly hearing the URR dev refer to himself as an "academic" made me cringe so hard I had to turn it off.

Regarding the book, it seems like Toady was dragged into it by Tanya and the URR dev. They seem to be way more enthusiastic about it than Toady (the URR dev even wrote like three of the articles in it).

Don't get me wrong here, I'm not the one pushing the conspiracy theory memes about Tanya. It's just obvious that this book isn't Toady's project. It's someone else's project that he got dragged into, and since he's a pretty nice and somewhat autistic guy, he probably has problems saying no to requests.

You don't need to carve tracks or worry about speed to use minecarts to get magma up. Do this:
>dig a drainable magma reservoir near your magma source
>make a stockpile for magmasafe minecarts in the reservoir
>fill and then drain the reservoir

You now have minecarts full of magma. Next:

>make a new stockpile near where you want the magma
>assign wheelbarrows to it
>once wheelbarrows are in place, delete the other stockpile

Now dwarves will wheel the minecarts up to their destination. Final steps:

>make a trackstop that dumps into the trench or hole you want to fill with magma
>create a hauling route where that is the only stop
>assign your magma-filled minecarts until the hole is filled to the desired level

Easy as plump helmet pie.

I downloaded the Dark Age mod and I got sidetracked with making a political map of my first world. Humans and normal Dwarves don't seem to exist here. I don't know if that's part of the mod or not.

With this map I tried making the boundaries less arbitrary by consulting the land claims shown in Legends mode. Where claims were a clusterfuck, like in the northeastern continent, I demarcated borders based on biomes and whomever had the most control over them, so Elves usually got all the woods running up to the borders of their neighbors. I also tried to make territories contiguous when possible.

I will try and make future maps more aesthetic.

So I'm playing in a new world, medium sized, advanced perams, and I retired the first fort I played because it was a reclaim, from a dead civ, and it got really boring.
And so in the fall of winter of the year 100, the Lizard Man Axeman Vucar SibrekUrist began his adventure.
I started as a fortress guard, in this fort near the south pole, that's part of a huge major dorf civ. I spawned in a bedroom with a human hammerman, a comrade, and we joined together in the name of adventure.
I stepped out in the halls to find a FUCKBIG insurrection. People died like dogs in the residential district, man killing man in their own homes. I joined my comrades as a loyalist, killing the conspirators who wished to tear this great city apart from the bottom up. I hacked them in the throats, guaranteeing death by blood loss.I fought my way to the main meeting area/stockpiles, where I encountered some REAL autism simulator shit. The dwarven king, a loyalist, was engaged in gritty, hand-to-hand combat with the goblin mayor, a conspirator.
It seems that the loyalists were dwarves native to this land, and the conspirators were of other races who now resided here. The conflict must have began over contrast in ethics or values in the races.

Dwarf Fortress has a big learning curve, most of it is complex UI, it just takes a lot of practice. I wouldn't feel too bad about the military screen, it's not very good.
>>
>>180702115
you have to hide from where beasts, by using [w] to create a burrow, then having an alert [m] [a] by creating a new alert, assigning that burrow to that alert, and then setting [CIV] to that alert. it's a huge beginner's trap and it's unfair. if you hide then the beast will revert to normal before it kills/infects anybody.

Hope this helped!

>>180698509

>>
>>180702115
Werebeasts can be entirely trivialized by starting your military early and having an early warning system composed of animals on restraints.

There are only two kinds of fortress designs: high-efficiency designs that everyone tries within their first 6 months playing but no one likes, and the designs you enjoy making. Just do the latter and you'll be fine.

The guides on the wiki for military management are exhaustive and accurate. Use them. There are a lot of moving parts to get hung up on, but eventually you'll just get it and wonder what your fucking problem was that whole time. There are probably a few small things that you're overlooking.
>>
>>180703239
Every piece of furniture included in the room designation counts toward its value. This usually, but doesn't necessarily, includes the door.

I'm concerned that this game only keeps getting easier every update.
New trees give you infinite wood instantly.
New trees give you tons of food.
New dorf happiness means no tantrum spirals, ever, and in general no tantrums at all.
New dorf needs make it so that they NEVER go on break or organize parties anymore, they're always ready to work AND no longer immediately abandon tasks the moment they get thirsty.
Buffed healthcare is generally no longer negligent even with 0xp diagnosis.
Buffed shared training means elite, perma-ecstasic military dorfs before you get any serious invasion.
New invasion calculations randomly makes gobbos practically not invade.
Oh also now you get free human mercenaries that are better than your dorfs. Did I mention they're free?
>>
>>180721602
Well since the dick & balls don't actually exist as body parts, there's no description of exactly what happened, so anything could've happened to them. They could've been torn off, pulverized, cut in half, etc. And ripped off happens to be the most amusing.

not him, but I frankly don't give a shit about challenges.

comfyness and level of detail is more important for me. challenge is nice, but it shouldn't come at the expense of detail. if you think it should, then you should just drop DF and play some mindless tower defense game instead.
>>
>>180756072
Level of detail and challenge are not mutually exclusive.
Just make multitile trees not drop obscene amounts of wood. Done, you added "comfy" without completely trivializing woodcutting.
Try to out any sort of display in the embark screen that warns you that despite being right next to a goblin empire they will never invade you. Done, you added autistically complex army travel simulations without sacrificing major gameplay for it.

>Try to out any sort of display in the embark screen that warns you that despite being right next to a goblin empire they will never invade you
This only ever happened due to a bug, which has been fixed since 0.42. If you don't get any sieges, it's either because the gobbos are busy siegeing someone else, or because they're out of manpower.

>autistically complex army travel simulations
What are you even talking about? Armies take the quickest path to your fort, while avoiding mountains and bodies of water. That's all there is to it. It's not rocket science.
>>
>>180755875

>>
>>180755875
Please post results, very curious about this myself.

My suspicion is that they'll interact with player characters and their surroundings, but not with offscreen npcs.
>>
>>180757362
If all it did was split the fort into factions, and there was a possibility of future peace, that would be one thing. It seems like one dwarf will attack the offending party and then instantly become a pariah to all factions involved, so there's no way to quell violent uprising.

Once I had a werebeast citizen, but no one could kill him because the militia would rip apart anyone who laid a finger on him, even people from the same squad.
>>
>>180749631
Drain into cavern 2, wall off openings where water flows in.

Easier said than done, but also kind of fun. Your FPS should return to normal if you can stop the flow.
>>
>>180757791
The fortress seems to be in order as far as I can tell. There is a worrying amount of goblins present, but that's probably something civ related as I found a goblin hillock baron beating up a human fisherman on my way to the fortress. I'll now travel the surroundings in search of the demons.
>>
>>180758946
Turns out all the Shade Monsters really get out of my fort to plague the nearby hillock. I ran into the damn thing again, but it's cool like this. Doesn't seem to be world ending. What are a couple of powerful demons roaming the world anyways...wasn't the dorfs fault, they didn't do nuffin'...
>>
>>180759504
On top of this I have just reclaimed the fort and suddenly I've got myself 200 whooping "guests" on top of the 36 citizens. A good portion of those are goblins and humans 50/50 flagged as guest or hostile, tons of reptile-men who seem to have taken a liking to my caverns. This is all very confusing. I might just open hell again to get rid of this place.
>>
>>180757175

Part of "civilian" clothing ocassionally involves cloth/leather caps. Caps conflict with all other headgear. If your dorf's everyday clothing had a XX(cave spider silk cap)XX, he will get his uniformed steel helmet, say "yep boss I got it tick it green", then proceed to not wear it because of his cap.
To prevent this, define a uniform that includes lower cloth layers and set it to "Replace Clothing" instead of "Over Clothing".

when you have "dig" selected in the designation menu, "a" toggles between designating everything, only designating ores, only desinating gems, and auto-digging gems and ores, where it digs the square you designate and automatically designates any tiles that get revealed for auto-digging, creating a chain reaction that mines the whole vein/cluster.

How do I install a new tileset?

but I'm feeling a new tileset for a new fort

Strongly recommend you to just download Lazy Newb Pack. It has that tileset predownloaded and a utility to switch between playsets easily (if you want something LIKE CLA but without the creature sprites try Myne fron the Customize menu)
Also comes preloaded with DFhack and a bunch of useful plugins you will surely enjoy even passively, like adding a search function to many menus.

>>180807032
I don't have anything against the starter packs. what I hate is when people push the meme that starter packs are the ONLY way to play the game. this is what every single magazine article about DF says, and I find it saddening that a new player can't even ask a simple question without getting drowned in calls to download every single starter pack (TM) there is.

>This kind of mentality would have prevented me from ever discovering useful DFhack plugins.
lol wut
dfhack has nothing to do with starter packs whatsoever. you can use dfhack without starter packs. in fact, this is the best way to use it, since the starter packs always take a while to include the latest dfhack version whenever it gets updated.

Well, I guess the forgotten beast that appeared two years ago and fucked off didn't actually fuck off at all and decided to ambush my legendary miner, who also happened to be the expedition leader. This quite short fight was witnessed by an unfortunate hauler, who probably started to regret not paying more attention during smithing classes in the dorf school.
The elite squads were dispatched to deal with the uninvited guest, however the first soldier to confront the forgotten beast was a recruit marksdorf. I guess she took veterans' stories about wrestling giant cage spiders while only wearing socks a bit too seriously and decided to be the next champion of the fortress, since she had absolutely no business in the caverns. Seriously, why the flying fuck was she there? Anyway, this act of bravery resulted in the increased number of corpses and unfortunately, the forgotten beast wasn't on that steadily growing list.
Finally, the squad of swordsmasters arrived and the militia commander swiftly demonstrated results of her training, effortlessly neutralizing the intruder. I think I know who will get a candy sword first.

Alright guys, it's been long enough since the last tourney, and I've got some time on my hands in the upcoming weeks. If everyone is down with the idea, I'm thinking of hosting another tournament, seeing as the general is so dead at the moment and the next update doesn't really change anything about combat anyway.
There were a few concerns last time, mostly along the lines of a short registration period, balancing certain races/weapons and the pacing of fights. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions about fixes they'd like implemented for this tourney, please suggest whatever you got.

Currently, the schedule will probably go as follows:
>1st week for registration period and possible balancing
>2nd week for the first round of eliminations
>3rd week for the second round and semifinals
>4th week for the battle royale and finals

I'll open the registrations tomorrow if this goes through, in the meantime I'm open to feedback.

They all carry crossbows and quivers, have single type of bolts assigned for both training and combat, archery targets are aplenty and properly placed, each with proper squad assignments. Scheduled orders for each month are "Train, 1 minimum", repeated several times.

How can I conquer a site in adventure mode such that it will recognize it as no longer belonging to the civilization which founded it? I killed all the inhabitants I could find and declared myself lord and made one of my companions a hearthperson, and we were from a different civilization, but it's still listed as belonging to the civilization which founded it, with a population consisting entirely of domesticated animals which don't actually show up.

My last fort was entirely in the miltiary but it had a problem that dwarves would be distracted because they couldnt pray, even though I set them on inactive and kept going to single man combat drills
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Any ideas for my next fort? Want to all military again, get them to competent and let them roam with axes
>>

>>
>>180892042
Are they set to Active/Training?
>>
>>180890960
Dwarves won't seek to fulfill their needs if it takes them out of their way. If you have military dwarves that need to pray, take them off duty, station them in your temple with squad orders, and then once they've arrived cancel the order. You can do the same thing for tavern or library jobs that they've neglected. Something I like to do it have stockpiles and/or workshops in those locations, so that dwarves are often completing jobs there and have more opportunities to take care of themselves without me forcing it.
>>
>>180892197

well i activated the squad and they are just sitting there with their mittens and shit but no crossbows or anything
>>
>>180892284

is praying a new thing that dwarves need to do? i havent played in 2-3 years.
>>
>>180890624
>>I should write a script to do that until then, gotta think about it first.

If you do, could you make it affect adventure sites too if you wanted? Imagine having migrants actually come to your site, forcing you to expand in order to accommodate them. When the new update rolls out you'd get visits from wandering adventurers and stuff as well.
>>
I have a lot of goblinite I want to smelt. Some of the goblinite is already being worn by my dorfs. They don't want to give them up for smelting.
How do I do this?
>>
>>180892458
Yes, dwarves need to pray. They need a temple to do it at, too.
>>
>>180892661

anything else they need to do i should be aware of?
>>
>>180892718
They actually do need clothes to wear (though I think it's been a LONG while since that wasn't true), and they really appreciate a tavern to socialize in and instruments to play in said tavern. Plus, if you attach rooms to your tavern, you can get visitors to stay in your fort.
>>
>>180892458
Need is a bit of an exaggeration, but they'll become distracted over time if they don't do that and certain other things based on their personality traits. If you look at you dwarves' thoughts and preferences pages you'll notice new entries toward the bottom, "is distracted after a lack of decent meals" "is unfettered after doing something creative" etc. Those needs contribute to a dwarf's focus (for positive values) or distraction (for negative values), which in turn grant bonuses or maluses to their skill checks.

Not really though because there are no tantrum spirals anymore. Taverns and temples just waste time they should be working imho

>>
>>180892356
>>180892197
>>180892042

p..please help
>>
>>180894236
There weren't tantrum spirals before the locations update either. They were fixed in 2014. That's not the reason for indulging your dwarves' needs. When their needs are unfulfilled and they become distracted they suffer a penalty to their skill rolls, so they produce lower quality objects, your military performs worse, your doctors and miners and detailers work slower, and so on. When your dwarves are focused they do every skilled labor better. It takes less dwarf time than the old break system and gives you tangible benefits.
>>
>>180895261
>>180894236

...they got rid of tantrum spirals?? wtf??
>>
>>180892515
That was the idea, having it pull up your parent entity and add in links for it with your declared entities and so forth.
>>
>>180890624
So are you saying there's no way to do it outside of dfhack? That's disappointing. I wanted to see what would happen if I killed a civilization.

>>
>>180895501
Eventually all "fun" features that don't adhere to logic or verisimilitude will be removed from the game. Tantrum spirals were never meant to last, they were just an incomplete feature/bug that persisted long enough that people forgot it wasn't part of the intended experience.

I suppose so, but was always intended to be an in-depth and fine-tuned fantasy simulator. The final product may well be entirely free of the exploits and wonky mechanics we know it for now.
>>
>>180898872

i don't think we'll have to worry about that for a good 10 years
>>
>>180898256
Tantrum spirals were akin to riots. How did they not adhere to logic?
>>
>>180899292
because they happened to frequently and were massive instances of collective insanity rather than proper riots, which will be added to the game at some point in the future and can be dealt with in any number of ways, including suppression via a military force as per usual, or even appeasing the mob by giving it what it demands, a system which is far more in-depth than what is more or less an infectious bad mood.
>>
>>180899292
I think it's still possible to have things go downhill fast if you have awful conditions, but the chain of people angry about things until everyone is going nuts because one guy had a bad day is gone.
>>
>>180899430

that's pretty neat.

question, at what point should i start considering making bedrooms for dwarves instead of a dorm?
>>
>>180746867
>thinking they melt adamantine
>not knowing they separate the adamantine thread and then cast those imbreakable threads into a baser metal.
Think of Adamantine as diamond. In industrial applications diamonds are just held in place with a matrix of other materials.

>>

>won't use
You mean aren't using? They're using other stone instead, or just won't use any stone at all? If it's the former, use linked stockpiles and give them enough jobs that use stone. If it's the latter, more information is required.
>>
>>180901208

it gives me some type of message about having no craftable stone type or something? i have plenty of stone just laying around though
>>
>>180901414
Most likely your fort is on a flux layer. Hit [Z] and go to the "Stone" menu, enable all economical stones for usage.
This is nice because flux stone is worth 2 times as much and allows you to create steel.
>>
>>180901501

how do i make sure they wont use stone that i can make metal out of? keep it red? it was already green by default
>>
>>180901689
Oh yeah you probably want to keep metal ores red, just enable the stone that you have lying around.
Flux stones are:
" • Calcite
░ • Chalk
` • Dolomite
▓ • Limestone
▓ • Marble
