as the adc you generally have 1 target you can safely dps at a time at most, especially since you're playing one without dashes. trying to actually maximize "muh passive!" in any way but trying to bounce your Q to targets that are farther back will get you killed 90% of the time.

There's no way I could say "Ok, I'm only going to play these three champs top" when I know that there's a top laner I can play that is strictly better for this team comp and against theirs

What do you do if you get like five onetricks of like Zed, Riven, Lee, Lucian, and fucking Janna or something?

You could have a terrible comp and still win with Riven if you're good enough to crush your lane and just splitpush. You don't need to be an OTP, but 43 is seriously too many (for purposes of climbing). Limiting your pool extends the amounts of times you can capitalize on finding or increasing your lead.
