Because genuine self improvement and change is too much for 99% of Japanese. They like characters who just work really hard to achieve goals. You know like almost every single shounen and shoujo character, they might be older, harder and wiser but they're fundamentally the same person that thinks in the same way.

I think the best example I can think of is there's this manga called Mx0. It wasn't anything too amazing or special, it's about a guy who's a normie, but ends up getting sent to a school where everyone is a magician. So rather than outdo his fellow classmates with magic spells or anything, he uses tricks and shit like that to do what they do and in some cases better than they can.

At the same time, manga like Naruto was printing and was super popular. As you know, Naruto's about a ninja born with a fox tail demon inside him and his dreams to lead his village despite that curse. Unlike Mx0 guy, Naruto is a chosen one/is special.

So as should be obvious, Mx0 got axed despite it being more interesting. Because people(read: teenage boys) like it when characters are special/super natural in some way rather than a guy who can be like anyone else, even if he did out do everyone by working hard.

A big reason for why the characters that are popular in DR is because of this shit. Togami, Makoto, Komaeda, Hajime, etc. are all examples of character who are predetermined to be special be it for one reason or another without having to do anything, so that puts them above other characters in Japanese mindsets.

Meanwhile characters like Momota, Hoshi, Oowada and Nekomaru who are characters who work hard, make self sacrifices, make human mistakes, etc. just aren't popular because to most Japanese they come off as characters who are try hards. It's really shitty but that's how it honestly is.

Yeah but people don't read Kaiji to see Kaiji succeed or win in Japan, they read it because they want to see Kaiji suffer. They wanna see just how much of a fuck up he can be. That's probably why Yasuhiro is popular, because he's pretty capable of ending up in a Kaiji-esque situation and being completely and utterly pathetic, much to the reader's enjoyment.

It's quite rare for diamonds to get created in Japanese media, if you want more of that kind of thing, read or watch stuff from the 60's, 70's or 80's because that kind of stuff was more popular. I don't even think the chosen one shit became really rampant until Dragonball shifted from a manga about a monkey boy getting stronger over time to one about it turning out the monkey boy was part of some legend.

Ashita no Joe is a good example of a manga that's actually about a character going through multiple ups and downs being popular for reasons that aren't chosen one bullshit.

Gintama's characters are based on people who existed(Shinsegumi or whatever) but reimagined in this world where it's futuristic yet swords are banned somehow. It's popular because it takes old ideas and reimagines them in a funny and entertaining way.

That's literally all it takes for it to be appealing to people in Japan though, and end of the day he doesn't change. You're right, he doesn't want to be the chosen one, yet he still gets up off his lazy ass to get the job done when it really counts only to go back to being a bum. Perhaps the idealism and the strength to face against odds even though you are completely fucked is now old news and in the decline. Akagi's flaw is that he a sociopath, has no regards for morality and ethics. And only truly lives when his life is on the line. That itself is a character flaw, that he will never have any human connections or experiences outside of his gambles. So you're just going to ignore that the Crazy Diamonds were a thing that existed, that Chihiro was responsible for both the neo world program and Monokuma's AI(before DR3 retconned the former), that Ishimaru's grandfather was prime minister of the country and is a great example of HPA being flawed since despite going there and graduating, he became one of the biggest failures in the country? There's also plenty about Oogami to consider.

There's plenty of world building in DR1, or at the very least a lot of unresolved plots concerning the students and DRAE sets things up to have those questions answered by having their family members show up, but in the end they got shafted in favor of having Nagito and Izuru show up.

Either way, with the way DR1 concludes, it leaves things up to the player to determine what happened. It's a purposely vague ending because it's clear Kodaka didn't want to give up on those characters so easy, he wanted an open ended thing. Although, it makes me fear that it would be the short end of the stick either way, if they were to receive the same treatment, it would have to be justified in some way in order for the narrative to coincide, while the DR2 kids had a seemingly unfair fate, it isn't really coinciding with the narrative and therefore has an element of fanfiction like happy ending in the mix. Leaving their fates to look akin to cameo characters. If the DR1 kids were to be alive, it would be completely unrealistic and cause DR1 to be worthless just like SDR2.

Certainly true and I agree with your point on the family members. But again, we are basing this on what we see happen in Hope arc. I feel like they should deserve more, especially characters who didn't have a deeper look into their backstories instead of a shitty crummy anime writing ending. Sakura and her relationship with Kenshiro, Ishi and his dad, Celes and her cat, etc etc. Family members were introduced for the sole purpose of spite. Well, I prefer Saihara and Maki to be just friends and nothing more, their relationship in the canon story pretty much points out to this. Plus, I feel it would ruined the dynamic of three survivors if two of them are a thing.
