Decided last night to change my game somewhat again to ease up the workload. Previously I was going to have dungeons and an open world akin to OoT, but it's just too much for one person if I want to get it out within the next few years. I mean, I originally wanted to have the game done by last may, but I'm not even close to being anywhere near done. Rather than big dungeons I'm going to have several small floating island stages, kind of like Toads Treasure Tracker, except the camera will still be 3rd person, so I don't have to worry about restricting the island to a cube. This way I can re-use a lot of the same assets despite there being different puzzles for each stage. I think I might even be able to pump out 2 or 3 different stages before demo day doing this.

>does he seem like someone who would have high self esteem?
I was here for his nightly breakdowns of crying to agdg about how his friends didn't like his garry's mod map and shit. He did that for a couple months before fully giving up and becoming a shitposter (or "sourceposter"). No he has never had high self esteem. I just get the feeling he's physically ugly as a gypsy turd on asphalt. He seems that kind of upset. Goes beyond gamedev.

>he thinks sourcefam can be banned
lol
Every once in a while he has to wash dishes at his part-time job or he has to suck penises and steal things to make some money to afford more alcohol but besides that sourcefam can't be removed from agdg. His shitposting is so frequent and steady and he's been doing it for so many months (almost 9 now) that surely mods would have permabanned him if they could. He has without a doubt racked up the most reports for his shitposts than anyone in agdg. He might even be a top ten all-time 4chan shitposter across all boards. He's that dedicated.

All because he wanted to bully yesdevs and couldn't handle being bullied back last summer.
>>
>>180412806
Possibly, depends on what exactly you're recording and how it's going to be used in-game. It will NOT be good enough for very detailed sounds like voice acting, but might work okay for more ambient sounds like background noises or footsteps.

I'm trying to figure out what this paragraph
>All you do in a jitter buffer is hold packets before delivering them to the application at the correct time as indicated by the sequence number (frame number) in the packet.
>The delay you need to hold packets for in this buffer is a much smaller amount of time relative to interpolation delay for snapshot interpolation but it’s the same basic idea.
>You just need to delay packets just enough (say 4-5 frames @ 60HZ) so that they come out of the buffer properly spaced apart.
is supposed to mean. I get storing packets, and then applying them in order after a delay but what is the delay relative to? the timestamps on the packets is from the server clock, which isn't synced to the client clock in any way. Do we apply a packet when we receive a packet that's five frames ahead of it? that just means if the connection drops no packets get applied. Do we try to keep a second clock that's in sync with the server clock? That seems prone to breaking.
>>
Does anyone else remember when rotate was posting videos of himself like he was a big deal here? In one video he was literally telling another dev to fuck off.
>fuck off nobody wants you here
Like he was the president of agdg. That person was c-kun and rotate still talks shit about and tries to bully him whenever he imagines he's around.
He has always been a bully and that's why so many polls prove that people hated him.
Now he's still up to the same shit with people who never liked him.
There are 1 o 2 other bullies and genuinely psychotic people who enjoy playing along with this. They bullied Aviary Attorney dev. They bullied Arikado until he left. And now they spam "danny" in these threads to bully another dev who they want gone.
They're just plain bad people and will amount to nothing in their life, let alone in game dev. Not this year or the next.
Rotate will always be remembered for being a bully and a spoiled little brat who tried splitting agdg up into his own private website. He will always hate the fact that people here remember that and don't like him and he will always try to climb the back of other devs like Arikado or anyone else to get back in the spotlight. But he will never be a success. He'll never have a game. And that's the truth.

Licensing being free to use without any royalties, so long as you released on steam and "don't hold your breath" were the last things I heard about it. Valve wrote their own physics to get out of that cancerous license old havok and that was the biggest hurdle for licensing in terms for third party devs.

The recap was posted like 4 or 5 threads ago in early monday.
>>
>>180414890
Yes. The middle portion of a game is always the hardest. When you first start you have a lot of fun because you're making a bunch of new mechanics and getting everything to work together. But the middle part is when you start putting together tedious things and cleaning things up. So there's less exciting new stuff.
Keep going, it gets better again.
>>
>>180415667
weekly recaps exist to keep you honest with yourself, not to showcase progress. That's what demodays are for and they are already bimonthly

It was a mmo beat em up
Character creation screen had a lot of stencil based costumization options (think of APB reloaded) or the option to upload your own texture file, since there was a big emphasis on war paint (the name of the game)
Then you got thrown into a huge colosseum like arena where you had to fight with a shit ton of other people. There was a won fights ranking and a respect points ranking. Respect points were given based on the melee weapons you used (heavier weapons got less respect points) and the way you fight (you got negative points when you attacked people from the back or people stunned by someone else's attack)
Feel free to steal

the music sounds like it can be improved if you quieted down the kick or clap in it, basically focus on the main beat and use the bass or kick to support it, that way it is a catchy tune. think of how the older zelda games had a simple and slow tune and try to emulate that.

It's truly free, you can use it however you want. It doesn't hold your hand like Gamemaker does, so it's more flexible. A lot of the differences are more personal preference though. Like the language, GDScript, and the whole node/scene structure of the engine.

For 2D games, Godot is a solid engine that's worth checking out. For 3D it's currently not that great (still better than Gamemaker). Godot 3.0 has a lot of 3D improvements, so we'll have to wait and see how good that is. But I think UE4 will still usually be the best choice for complex 3D games.

It's something really simple actually, Think of early arcade or NES games.
Their AI is not radiant, they are very dumb, they wander around the village and run away from you into the house when they see you. But I plan to improve on it, at least for some NPCs.
They will keep spawning no matter how many of them you kill, so I guess they are repopulating to some degree, but their spawn rate lowers a little on higher levels.
You can check an older demo here: https://jcs.itch.io/vampires-bit-demo
>>
>>180418235
>FOSS
>2D/3D capabilites
>Uses its own scripting language called GDScript. You can also program your games directly in C++, but there's not much documentation on how to
>Uses a Node+Scene system instead of an Entity+Component system like Unity. You can think of scenes as Unity Prefabs
>Has an animation tool built right into the editor
>Pretty stronk for 2D, especially tile-based, but pretty mediocre at 3D
>3.0 will bring better 3D capabilities like PBR. It's also bringing a way to allow you to script in just about any language you like. It's in Pre-pre Alpha right now, though, so hurry up and wait
>The documentation should be good enough that you can make a simple 2D game pretty easily.

It's got potential. I'm waiting to see if suddenly Godot jobs start popping up instead of Unity ones, eventually.

Reminder that many, MANY people attempt to make games and of the few who actually make something, the tiniest sliver of these people have something that achieves some sort of "success."

the very basics can be learned in like a few hours by reading the manual, gamedev is a constant learning experience though so you will always run into new problems find out new shit, the usual recommendation is to start by cloning old games like pong and tetris before working on your real game
-
depends on the kind of game but you will most likely redo shit as you build up the gameplay, things never go according to plan and won't know the technical specifications of the assets until you build the framework of the game and find out what looks best

when starting out the best process is to simply do it in the most direct manner, don't get too distracted by coding patterns and abstractions and development best practices bla bla bla, just learn as you go and google often

for general tutorials on godot I recommend the videos from KidsCanCode and GDQuest on YouTube

so what i gather from the general aesthetic is that your dead, this is some apartment complex in limbo, and you have to do oddjobs and loansharking for the landlord of this place?

Try the demo. I think its just sprite or object limited like the old one. I'm loving it, but still need time to get used to the zoom/pan of the workspace. You'll find they've tweaked a ton of things to improve the workflow, little things you wont notice at first, but they make a big difference to usability. I've been tooling around in both today, and its pretty jarring to go back. The room/layer editor shits on GMS. Shits on it. Some GML changes will mess with you for a bit, just read the help for obsolete functions. Or just buy it. I work. $50-$70 is nothing for a basic licence. I've bought bottles of grog that cost more than that and didn't last as long.

You disgust me.

You are everything that is wrong with the independent games industry. You just make shit because you are can't be fucked to put the effort in. All you shit is shovelware with no creativity, originality or polish. All you are doing is clogging up the market with shit products that turns people off independent games developers who actually do make an effort.

Just stop. You don't have the skills, experience or knowledge to make games. Get a job and spend some years working hard for a change. Build up your skills and come back to games development in 10 years.

Everybody loathes you. Nobody likes your games. You are so pathetic it's sad. You didn't make. You will never make it at this rate. You don't have what it takes (at this stage). Your character is corrupt and poorly developed.

It comes through in your games how immature and poorly developed you are. You are a hack. What's worse is you are making an industry look bad.

Go out into the real world. Do a real job and make real friends. Temper your character through real experience.

I hope you take my words to heart. You need tough love, because you didn't get it growing up.

If any programmers want to get their feet in the door on a legitimate product, there's Fiona Frightening and the Wicked Wardrobe, which has been languishing in development hell for years. They have real voice actors, (Team Four Star, the guy who won the Mass Effect Andromeda contest, and a bunch of Youtube VAs) writers, and art. They only need programmers. I'm not sure who you'd get in contact with for it, but you could try contacting Alex Tansley (The guy who does thumbnails for Linkara.) or Kyle Land, the Mass Effect VA.

the definition is i make enough money to live on from my games, it is so.

yes.
>and said verbatim that you don't make enough money with games to live on?
but i literally never said that, i said the opposite, did you even listen to the video all the way through? all i say is i would like to NOT paywall games to make my living, as in i'd rather give away things for free. i would like to never fucking touch steam or any other piece of shit 30% fuckboi rentier webstore ever again, that would be fantastic. if my patreon ever takes off that is what's happening. if it's zero forever that sucks but i'll be fine.

Put some effort into designing your template.
Don't clutter it with reblogs of other games.
Don't reblog irrelevant subjects.(no-game related)
Don't follow every single person that follows you. It makes you look desperate.
Don't talk about politics.
Don't talk about your personal feels.
People only reblog art tier progress, so make it juicy.
Art in general is more likely to get notes.
Use proper game related hashtags, but not too many.
Try to be the first one to reblog someone's progress who is popular. Your name will appear at the top and you'll be more likely to get noticed.
Don't ignore messages.
Smile.

Generally it's a good idea to avoid big asset frameworks like that, especially if it's compiled as a .dll. This means you cannot tweak it(unless you like reading obfuscated code by de compiling it). Even if it's open source, rarely do large assets work nicely out of the box. If you're good at reading other people's code, then it might not be a problem to work around it.

You could always just use it as a reference as you build your own AI.

I am readying up for a portfolio building project.
I was gonna post a recruitment post for collab here when I have details worked out.

I have not yet set up a github project or anything like that. But I probably will in 10h time.

The project is intended to be for practice and also to put something into collaborator's portfolio. I have yet to figure out the copyright licence of the project(probably some free licence). I don't want this project to be a huge commitment for other collaborators who might want to join, so the Estimated Length of this project is gonna be 1 month from when we start developing it. We could extend this length if there is demand for it, but it will be no longer than 2 months.

There is no dev team's central communication hub yet, so here is my email alias: [email protected]

>>
>>180443820
I see. Well unfortunately this isn't going to work for me but good luck!
>>
>>180443603
I have intentionally not chosen an engine.

We will choose an engine or a framework during pre-production week. (According to my current plan, each week will be one production stage.

1.Concept Stage - people pitch their ideas(if they want), we settle for an engine, we settle for artstyle, we make a design document
2.Boot up project - programming the base game to make it ready enough that people other than programmers can start developing it. at the same time, artists and designers make and plan content that they would be able to do within the development stage
3.Development - we try to get as much of our planned content in. We will have to make a priority list for that in Concept Stage.
4.Polish - we rough out the sharp edges and get the game ready for deployment
5.Deployment

------

However, the game(whatever it is gonna be) is going to be a 2D game. I would prefer to use a 2D graphics API rather than an engine. Thus, the 2D graphics API remains as the fallback(Plan B) option.

I did talk about that subject and I figured out a solution. I'm just wondering if it would be best to put it on by default or not.

If I put it off by default a lot of people will miss it and complain about a solved issue.

If I put it on by default I worry that a few won't figure out how to close the game without being able to press 'X'.
>>
>>180445668
>It makes sense for large AAA productions

Honestly, most AAAs use in-house engines anyway, so they're using and extending a pre-existing engine as well. Honestly, the only people starting from scratch to make an engine are probably startups not wanting to adhere to licensing issues, or hope to also lease their engines out to others willing to pay for it.

Enginedevs are cool guys, though. My guess is these kind are pining more for helping create the already known engines, making an actual salary, instead of just like making game for (hopefully) minimum wage at the end of the year.

i don't really play games but most games just cost too much like $60 + paid dlc and microtransactions wtf is that shit. or $20 for a very low effort/quality indie game lol wtf
>How do you feel about pirating as a developer?
don't care, most pirates wouldn't pay for the game anyway and if your game is genuinely good you should be able to monetize it quite well and if you have a fanbase you can get that patreon/indiegogo monay too

How strange that some of you make games but don't like playing them. I get it that you could have gotten bored of them and prefer creating something of your own now, but still. Have you ever heard of a composer who doesn't like to listen to music, or a fimmaker who never watches movies?

>>
>>180447696
>dampen it for each subsequent enemy that it hits

that and/or enforce a global max cap on the freeze so it never gets too long even if you hit a lot of enemies

this might mean you have to put a cooldown until freeze is allowed again (even if it's a ridiculously small value, I think it'll help)

This one is for me. Another dude did it as well and added a fox character, but it still didn't feel quite right. Regardless, a simple asset swap and boom. Spiritual successor. The problem is people use OOP and ONLY OOP all the time, even when another way would be better. It's okay to use a mixture of paradigms throughout a game. Learn different ways of making things and you can then always decide on the better way when you make something.

updatefunc[obj["type"]](obj)

I know some Java but have never tried to gamedev.

My goal by the end of July is to make all of the following with some basic art:

Pong
Rock, Paper, Scissors
Slot Machine
Calculator
Analogue clocks (multiple timezones)
Snake
Space Invaders

Not looking to start a meme argument, but what software would be good to make these?

I've downloaded GameMaker 2 (trial) and Unity but am yet to try them out, can anybody recommend an art program for making basic models/sprites and backgrounds?

When I have completed everything on my list I will begin making my first proper game.

Graphics Gale just went completely freeware a couple of days ago. It's a pretty decent pixel art program. There's always GIMP for a photoshop replacement. Some people like to make pixel art in Krita.

>what software would be good to make these?
Well, none of those are very hard. Since you know some Java, you can maybe consider giving libGDX a shot. You can probably make all of those in Unity in maybe 4 days if you just keep at it constantly and don't really care about art quality. Just follow the tutorials on the site and google any problems. There's probably a Unity Answers for everything.

Godot is another good game engine.

For pixel art Aseprite is probably the best. For non-pixel art Krita is good for painting, and paint dot net is good for simple image manipulation. I don't really like GIMP at all, but it also exists.

For 3D Blender.
>>
>>180453521
>Java
Might as well give up already.

Use the engine that suits what you want to end up making in the long run. Learning gamemaker won't help you much if you eventually want to make 3D games.

People hate Unity but it's unironically not that bad. The only alternative for 3D is Unreal engine which is quite a bit more overwhelming unless you want to to visual scripting cancer.

For 2D gamemaker is pretty much your only option unless you want to use a meme engine like Godot.

First I separate things by their file type, than what object or level they are being used for, for example the material of the player will go to textures/player/player.png or the sound of a slime sounds/slime/boop.wav

Games are about the illusion that more than just math is happening. Not even picking a choice will go against the idea that you're playing, it will make the player think his fate was pre-ordained.

I was working alone for 2 months and burned out.

Then I got a team together and I'm still going strong after 3 months of working 24/7.

If you are the manager/project leader, you feel an obligation and duty to the people working under you. As project manager, I haven't touched a recreational activity (gaming) for 3 months, because someone always needs something.

As a team member, you always got the manager/leader supervising your work. A good leader will also motivate team members who are in a slump.

Our team is getting a huge amount of stuff done and nobody has burned out yet.

Need some help.
My code checks the square of the character's vector, to check that it isn't bigger than 1.This prevents the character from going faster diagonally.

The problem I'm having is that when the character jumps, it stutters each time it reaches >1f, obviously because it's taking into account the Y value too.
What would be a fix for this?
