Speaking of of activation timing, a killer weapon and the QP seal allow you to activate Galeforce or store a charged AoE attack after a single skirmish where both sides attack and either party doubles. If there's a 100 units on a banner, 99 blues and 1 red, opening red stone gives you a 0,03% chance to pull that focus red. Every single special with more than 3 charge is trash, unless you're running a killer weapon or quickened pulse. They take far too long to charge.

Draconic Aura is great, but trash on Bladetomes because of the +1 cooldown.

I guess you're comparing them because they both have the Nihil skill (innate or from Marita's sword)? I can't find much use of that skill throughout the game, there's only a couple enemies with prayer and it's rarely needed against them. I guess the one use would be for killing Elf in the final chapter.
As far as general combat goes both Trewd and Marita aren't so great in my opinion. Trewd lacks PCC so he can't reliably crit and kill stuff and Marita has terrible durability and requires some training before her strength becomes decent.

Arena's matching system is weird
When I was in the beginning ranks with teams of entirely 4* units, none of whom were level 40 yet, I exclusively got sets of opponents all tier 17+ with Ryoma/Hector/Blademage/dancer teams.

Now that I'm up in those tiers myself, I get selections of 3 teams in the beginner tiers with level 20-something units.

She's not hard to train but I'd rather level up someone else if I wanted to be efficient. Yes, she can do a lot of cool stuff but the payoff for training her is minimal. By the time you get her you could have Shiva ready for promotion already and at equal levels he has much better durability than she does. Also I think Shiva is immensely overrated as well but that's another story
It's not too hard to kill enemies in FE5 and skill activations are unreliable so Mareeta's offense isn't a big deal. She's limited in what she can attack because enemies with master weapons might ORKO her and she doesn't have good 2-range attacks.

I still use her because she's cute.

If you have a ranged unit strong enough to OHKO things, just let them walk onto the tree and shoot whatever is guarding it. If the tree guard is melee and you can't OHKO it, just pullback. You get 3 player phases to kill it before it can actually hit you back this way.

If it's a ranged unit, reposition your ranged unit into the tree and hope you can OHKO it or else you're fucked.

Tree map is only a problem if you're cavmemes or if they spawn a dagger next to the tree (since the tempest dagger units have such bullshit impossible stats.)

I agree that Shiva's better than Mareeta, in particular he's useful in the chapters before you get her.

Also Machua is quite viable, she'll have a level lead on Shiva because of her Manster contributions and 3PCC is enough to crit with the killing edge.

I just don't think swordmasters are ideal to use later on, like you I focus on magic users and I also have Othin, Dagda, Fergus, etc.

Honestly though, there are plenty of characters that are 'solid enough' in thracia. It's quite lenient in what characters are viable; just about anyone can be trained into a useful unit.
