Someone who has actually played xiv here. The game is a lot better than wow imo, i just still play wow because my friends do. If you don't mind the 2.5s gcd (there's a lot of abilties off gcd anyway) then the combat is much more fun then wow's, every job has way more spells than wow's classes also healers are expected to dps and not just healbot. The game can be intimidating at first since you don't just level with quests and dungeons like in wow, there are multiple ways of leveling but for your first job you just want to level using the story quest. Speaking of the story if you enjoyed the other final fantasy games then you might like xiv since the game is heavily story driven, the story is really interesting and has the usual twists and turns that ff games are known for. Raids are way better than wow, and thats saying something since legion has some great bosses, the bosses in xiv are much more movement intesive and are a lot faster than wows. The low playerbase is a meme btw, the latest advert for stormblood said that game has 5mil active players.

Im not going to pretend xiv is a perfect game though. It has its issues like a lot of places in the game are blocked off by invisible walls, its not as open world as wow is. Another issue is if you don't like the story quests then youre fucked since they have to be finished to unlock content, also the first 30 levels can be really dull but they go quick so don't worry about it too much.

The game has a free trial to level 20 so its worth giving a try. I still play the game when my friends are away and i can assure you the game just gets better with each expansion.

Oh and don't play the catgirl race, everyone plays the catgirl race.
