I managed to clean up my equipment code a lot. Before when I posted it I kind of cheated just as a proof of concept. Now it properly selects the mesh and texture based on the entry in the item database.

Additionally, got my rotation issues fixed!

That would only be the case if most work you do must happen in sequence, which is rarely the case. If you're using a game engine that does everything except the logic for you, you have a point, but the game engine likely does the useful threading for you already (or at least it should).

We are talking about working on a game, not your engine, you are already within 2 words deliberately missing the point

Traditional roguelikes randomize items, enemies and the dungeon but not character skills (spellbooks aside). I'm thinking of making a roguelike where the skills available to the player are randomized. For example there could be 4 level 2 warrior skills and each run the player could pick between 2 of them upon hitting level 2. What do you think of this idea?

i will also not hesitate to point out that attempting to enginedev when you're just getting started with gamedev is a terrible idea that will only cause you to refactor the same code way too many times
attempting to "get it right" the first time with enginedev will require years of experience from you
using an engine is not a perfect solution to make a game might require using workaround solutions in some cases, but your game will get done much faster and you will not have to bother with reinventing the wheel to do the mundane stuff
these few frames might not be worth months or even years of additional work
>>
>>180195591
>it's superior
See, this is the problem people have with engies. They claim their method is "objectively superior" in any way, shape or form, yet they never post progress. How is it so superior, then, if you don't make games with it?

It's not a matter of people disliking engies doing enginedev, but rather disliking how they cannot shut up about their high horse and generally have very little to show for it.
>>
>>180196161
If you think learning the skills required is a bad use of your time then that's your opinion. This is amateur game development, we don't have budgets or deadlines.

>>180196175
The only time enginedevs ever "cannot shut up about their high horse" is when you faggots shitpost about it in the first place. Live and let live.
>>
>>180195950

>>
>>180196264
>If you think learning the skills required is a bad use of your time then that's your opinion.
that's the point - these skills are not required to make a game
if you are not into it and just want to achieve the very specific goal of making a game, you will be wasting time
this is amateur game development, our time resources are limited due to the fact we are not working on this stuff full-time
>>
>>180196264
People shitpost about it because engies will come and say "Y-yeah, I'm totes making progress" and never have anything to show for it.

Then engies autistically screech defensively about how their method is superior to using engines.

They keep not posting progress, so the cycle continues.

I actually like roguelikes where you don't pick predefined classes, you have to build the class as you go through the dungeon. Based on the items you get and the skills you unlock you have to decide what kind of character to build.

Kek this is a good one. You are so assblasted you need to accuse anyone not agreeing of being inferior, either by lolengines or lolreddit. Let me take a wild guess: You got openGL to render a teapot on an empty background a few weeks ago, and haven't touched your "game" since.

Nah, he's actually schizophrenic and believes that it's still 2015 when his boogeymen rotatedev and sourcefam were still posting. He continues posting source images to maintain the illusion.

As someone who has suffered a psychotic break in the past, this behaviour isn't surprising.

Is there a way in C# (or any language, really), to inherit and extend a function in a way that it does stuff from the base fucntion AND from the inheriting one, instead of just doing A or B? Something like this:

function dothis(){
//do something here
}
function dothis2 extends dothis(){
//do stuff from dothis()
//do something here
}

Is something like that possible without using base.dothis() in every inheriting function?

>>
>>180198297
I want it to be invoked all the time, on every inheriting member.
I just realized that i could just extend a whole different class, but that's too much for a little thing that i'm trying to do.
>>
>>180198497
It's good that we have a second class of citizens to make fun of to pass the time.
>>
>>180198212
You have to do what you said, or you could do something wacky like have a list of functions you run through and you add more functions to that list. The built in way to have a list of functions in one object in C# is called "events".
>>
>>180198758
I understand that, anon. But different things could happen if the inherited behaviour happened before the derived behaviour, after it, in the middle, etc. If there was such a feature, it would have to emulate the capabilities of just writing base.method() and it would probably involve more writing.

Added some placeholder furniture so I could test a few new features:

• bigger than 1x1 furniture support (and the collision checks for that)

• rotation checks for bigger than 1x1 pieces

• outline on furniture that’s active (aka you’re controlling it)

These are not going to be in the final game. They’re only here for testing purposes. But it goes to show how even those simple models make even an empty room look better. Hope I find an artist soon!

I think that’s the interior stuff for now. Already works pretty well. Going to work on some other important base features now!

Programming progress: Made an item, inventory and equipment system. The data per item is loaded from json files and paired with a unity prefab of the same name. This is then stored in a dictionary "database" where items can be instantiated and loaded with data on the fly, contaning simple variables like base damage or more complex ones like attack animation sets. Inactive game objects represent equipment in the inventory and active gameobjects parented to a transform is used for equipped items. So now I can do some neat stuff like
sword = loaditem("sword");
pickup(sword);
equip(sword);
Which would also unequip any item in the item's used socket (right hand in this case). Maybe I can show this once there is some UI lol. Also still gotta figure out how to equip skinned meshes like clothes.

The original game was never fun in the first place, why would you clone it? And worst of all, why would you make a 1:1 clone?

Throw it away and do something that is not tutorial tier. At least you know how to move things around the screen, how to perform basic collisions and some other stuff from it.

In my case it's just future-proofing which I don't really need yet but I figured it would be easier to set up while I was already doing the other surrounding systems. Basically you do this because it makes it easier to edit items down the line, and it makes it a lot easier/more lightweight to patch the game.

instead of asking this, ask what are the effects of a small character or a large character. then decide which one your game needs. to start you off:
1. you have more time to react to new information with a small character

3. repeated assets stand out more with a larger screen size

>I always begin by just typing out exactly what I want to happen in each specific case, without any regard to “correctness” or “abstraction” or any other buzzword, and I get that working. Then, when I find myself doing the same thing a second time somewhere else, that is when I pull out the reusable portion and share it, effectively “compressing” the code. I like “compress” better as an analogy, because it means something useful, as opposed to the often-used “abstracting”, which doesn’t really imply anything useful. Who cares if code is abstract?
>Waiting until there are (at least) two examples of a piece of code means I not only save time thinking about how to reuse it until I know I really need to, but it also means I always have at least two different real examples of what the code has to do before I try to make it reusable. This is crucial for efficiency, because if you only have one example, or worse, no examples (in the case of code written preemptively), then you are very likely to make mistakes in the way you write it and end up with code that isn’t conveniently reusable. This leads to even more wasted time once you go to use it, because either it will be cumbersome, or you will have to redo it to make it work the way you need it to. So I try very hard to never make code “prematurely reusable”, to evoke Knuth.
It truly baffles me that more people don't do this.

Yeah, I think I read this a couple years ago when I first started gamedev, and I always tried to follow it. It seems to work well too, I don't waste time making reusable code when I only end up using it once, and when I do make reusable code it always turns out nicely.

>>
>>180232872
Fug. i cant. Im on my phone atm.
>>
>>180233508
just remember what basic functions have the right characteristics, then go to desmos and fiddle around with numbers

-e^-x has the asymtote anon wants. Multiplying the whole equation is effectively multiplying the height (since your height is just Y), so you multiply it by a. Then you solve for the X intercept and then add that solution onto your equation to move the graph that far over to the side, thus fixing the start point at 0,0.
>>
>>180231783
I hadn't thought about it, but if I have something workable by then, sure.

>>180233514
I have noticed that; I think the issue is that I don't check every frame to see if the player is landing on a platform. Should be an easy fix.
>>
>>180227639
Assuming you add the blue tint with a shader, you could just make one tile set that has an additional detail with a color that's very similar to the rest of the tile. At day it will look invisible, at night you can use the shader to make that extra color visible

Blue tint is basically a semi transparent rectangle applied over the screen with a multiply blend mode. It's a project that I'm working on mainly to learn programming in a way that keeps me interested and teaches me effectively. That's why I'm reinventing the wheel as much as I can (C++ without stdlib), which is why progress is pretty slow.

The game itself is going to be an RPG, with inspiration taken from roguelites and WRPGs.

A lot of people get confused by the hearts, but they're just the debug visualization for hitboxes. Lets me detect bugs like the one in the webm much easier. If you pay extremely close attention, the rapid attack is hitting the wrong hitbox zone. It's hitting the top-right instead of the bottom-left and bottom-right. Hard to spot because the hitreg flashes are only 1 frame, but it's there.

Honestly, not a fan of jester-looking characters, but I like the fact that the player uses the sword as a sort of pogo stick and different elements let him do different stuff. Now to think of it, local device time would work as well. I wanted to prevent people tempering with their date, but who would go to those lengths. Also I can put a warning code, that doesn't explicitely refer to the problem.

Keep the time of previous tap stored somewhere. Then when you tap, just check current time+delay > previous time

>>180248860
but that's what a double tap literally means. It implies that the second tap is within a certain time.
>>
>>180249084
Shaders would be good if you want more control, but if you're already drawing something with shaders then they won't work.

Easiest is probably to just set draw_set_alpha to some low number, like 0.25, and draw a black rectangle over the whole view
