The limitation is the characters. You get a free character in a rotation and can unlock Jago by finishing the shadow lords tutorial and another character by playing that mode more.
When you have access to a character you have access to everything with that character from arcade story to online and practice. You even can train against characters you don't own/don't have free access to.

Red instant kills have a lot of startup, they also have some invincibility frames later into their startup so they can get you if you aren't being smart about your buttons. They don't have invincibility from frame 1, so you can stuff them. A person in instant kill mode will also bleed life if they run out of meter, they also can't FD anymore so if they are ever in the air, they are completely vulnerable to grounded attacks.

That sounds like you are messing up your meaty. You also don't want to be up close next to someone when they are waking up since throws are 1F. You want to be outside of their throw range and throw out an attack so the active frames are over them. If they hit buttons or try to throw, you will get a counter hit.

throws are 1f so if you get too close you'll eat a throw and lost momentum. you also have to respect their wakeup options like in every other game (wakeup super, dp, throw, or just mashing jab). if you're not confident or don't have a read, just backdash and/or meaty them. backdash is always a good go to idea

If people activate instant kill, you can just run away and play safe because their hp will deplete automatically after the bar run out until they use the instant kill. Instant kill is slow as fuck and blockable so you have no excuse to get hit by it unless you push stupid button

If they can combo you after getting knock down, you simply not doing it right timing wise. You either set up too late, not throwing out that meaty with the right timing, or you get too close and get grabbed. Note that when the opponent is getting up, they will be able to grab you before the get up animation finish so if you are in their grab range, you will always lose to their grab even if you try to throw a meaty or trying to grab. Some characters have grab invincible moves but that's a different story. There is also a chance that you are not timing your combo right and ending up hitting your last hit too late, turning it into an OTG hit that have them get up instantly

An attack with decent active frame. This is the basic of every fighting game. The idea is that you throw out a move with a timing so that the opponent has an active attack right on top of them and any button they push other than block or an invincible reversal will get them hit.

You should really play the tutorial. GG has the absolute best tutorial in a fighting game and you are just hurting yourself not using it if this is your first fighting game. If you play through the tutorial/challenge and be able to apply everything in it, you can straight up beat any new players in the game.
