However, forcing your game to revolve around some arbitrary requirement that is complete bullshit, makes the game less about actually fighting people and more about lab ratting hard enough that it becomes a dick waving contest of who can do the most meme-y combos. There's a spectrum to this. Easy combos are nice, but braindead easy, mashable combos are boring and unsatisfying. There's no satisfaction at all in doing SFV combos but I recently got into Tekken with 7 and its combos are pretty lenient in execution but still loads of fun to do.

Mirror matches are NOT always even- again, if you read Japanese BBS you'd know. In Japan, difficulty of mirror match is based on how differently you need to play the character during the mirror, and whether you gain or lose your main tools. For example, as a Ragna player, I don't have to adjust my playstyle for the mirror (just space my 5b)- I actually get new tools to use specifically for the match (double berial variation, dp clashing gimmicks, etc). Because of these factors, it's generally accepted here that Ragna has a relatively easy mirror, which acts as a 6-4 matchup when it comes to character ranking. On the other hand, Arakune mirrors cause the player to play a completely different style plus he loses a lot of his options (where's your curse pressure when you're cursed yourself?). Last I read, the Japanese said he has the hardest mirror and ranked it at 3-7 in terms of character ranking, but I haven't checked recently. And then finally, a lot of chars like Bang/Tsubaki/Hakumen have relatively plain mirrors which get 5-5 in terms of character ranking.

Sorry, I see some people are still confused. My English has gotten rusty so I guess I didn't explain it well enough. Yes- in the end, with perfect play by both sides, every mirror match boils down to an even matchup. But in terms of ranking characters, the Japanese look at the difficulty of the mirror to help adjust the ranking among the individual tiers. Think about it this way, if a character has an easy mirror (what the Japanese label 5-5 in terms of character ranking) then he doesn't need to change his style- just play. In the end, you'll win if you are better. If a character (i.e Arakune) has a difficult matchup, then you'll have to play an almost entirely different character/playstyle in order to win the match. The Japanese give this kind of match a 7-3 purely in terms of character ranking. This is one of the reasons why Arakune tends to come out a little lower than he seems to deserve on tier lists- he has bad matchups against chars like Lambda, as well as a difficult mirror.

Obviously, with perfect play, every mirror match will boil down to 5-5. You really think the top Japanese players don't know this? I play at an arcade with Tsujikawa/Chou(SBO winners)/Mame/Uisora/ANG/Himajin/etc... These guys are playing on a completely different level from the rest of Japan (Americans aren't even playing the same game). I can't reiterate this enough, these players are literally Gods of Blazblue, and they each play at least 5 different characters. Everyday the arcade is busy; even if they aren't playing, they're sitting there watching matches and discussing the game. Tonight I'll let them know some netplayer from Illinois disproved everything they've been discussing for months.

I'll try explaining again for you and anyone else who's interested in advanced character analysis- you're saying a 5-5 matchup between two different characters is the same as any mirror match in the game. Japan is saying that for a "normal" mirror match, this holds true- just play your character, and the better player will win. For a difficult mirror (which you say is the same as any other matchup), you need to play very differently and you lose a lot of your tools which make up the foundation of your character- when this happens, luck becomes a much larger factor in the matchup compared to the "normal" 5-5 mirrors. And if you've played fighting games for a while, you know that gimmicky/lucky/dice-roll characters are always ranked lower due to lack of stability. (Fuerte, Satsuki, grapplers in general).

Characters with a bad mirror like Arakune have much less control over the match, are much more likely to get randomed out, and therefor the Japanese take that into consideration when ranking them overall. If you still don't believe me, come to Japan and watch the way the best players counter-pick each other- no one ever counter picks Mame's Ragna with Ragna, but people always lose to Hima Arakune and then counter with Arakune (and win way more than they should).

I'd say it's fairly easy to get into. You just need to really hunt for resources.
And you need to approach learning the characters from a different perspective, you need to start with the best moves and learn how you use them before diving deep into the move list.
Also learning the common stuff characters you play against do is way more important than learning all the gimmicks your character has.
