Not guides, I just saw two let's plays of it when it came out. I didn't even use any strategy, I just rolled a lot and hit it.

I'm doing an arcane build and I've just created ailing loran. The first layer was not to bad: my +9 fire saw spear (327 pure fire AR) could easily handle beasts, the bell maiden takes to many hits to kill, though. What damage should I use to get them out of the way quickly? The real problem was the boss, beast-possesed soul: it took barely any damage from my weapons and my tools (I've yet to beat story Rom, so I only have augur and gloves). Should I continue the dungeon or proceed through the main game?

After several playthroughs, I still find every DaS game easier except SoTFS. If only for the chalice dungeons, or potential for enemies to punish you much harder.
Like any of the games though, people complaining about lack of difficulty on their first run tend to be overleveled or have experience with other FROM games.

I don't think so, the beasts in Nightmare Frontier can drop shitty crescent bolt gems though, just for if you need to change damage types.
I think the similar enemies in Chalice Dungeons, as well as BpS can be farmed for elemental gems, but I'm not too sure on that.
Just get the DLC if you don't have it, it's worth the price.

No. Livign Failures are weak to fire damage. Maria Resists it slightly, but it doesn't matter at all when the whole fight is pushing her over and occasionally getting a visceral in.

Yes, he is pretty quick to get too. literaly just 1 small room, from the Layer Lantern.
But thats about it.
My biggest gripes with him are:

Instead of jamming your hand into her after a parry, you hit her with with charged R2s (or R1 + Transform Attack depending on what weapon you use)
This will do more damage whit low SKL, as being hit by other attacks while being in a visceral state has crazy counter-damage multipliers.
