I really wish this game could at least support 100 dwarves for more than 20 years before fps death. Kinda sucks you always have to play with baby fortresses.

Also, check this awesome fortress;

Are sieges based on population or just wealth? I know you need to change the pop cap for titan attacks. Can you change everything for a lower population? Or is barony locked to 100 dwarves?

1:23 AM PST here. I'm wondering why its so hard to find these fucking packs for older DF versions. Like all the forum links are broken. I'm looking for the modest mod pack for 34.11. I found it on my other computer but I think I had to manually look for it on the file repo.
>>
>>179883140
It's also morning in Europe, so people with duties are in work/school and NEETs, being nocturnal creatures, are still asleep.

Modanon here, still busy with life but soon i'll get back to modding DF again.

Any modding requests? I'll do anything that you guys would like me to do. (as long as its possible to make)
>>
>>179884148
Should be worth mentioning that i'll work on the stuff that was requested in earlier threads first before moving on to current stuff so fulfilling your request might take a while.

>(Toady One) Things are still a little rough and square-ish in parts, but we're calling it for kobold caves. The new entity animal framework is set up, though I've only used it for kobolds. It's pretty basic -- you can compel an entity to use creatures that either belong to a list of classes (classes can also be excluded), or by their token, and you can set them to either use matching animals from the environment or to get a free environment-independent starting population as with the current domestic creatures. You can optionally override the mount/wagon puller/etc. roles defined in the creature definition, setting them to always or never be used for those roles. Kobolds use their new entity animal definition to keep as pets any creatures in the surrounding environment that are in the new poisonous class which do not have the new mammal class. In my test cave, this led to a scary pit room filled with giant cave spiders and rattlesnakes.

Does this mean mounts soon?

I just play 34.11 all day because I'm obsessed with FPS death avoidance. Its kind of serine knowing that df-hack is always available, moddest mod is updated, and everything functions the same as always. I'm released from the suffering of waiting for updates. Since Toady doesn't give a fuck about performance updates things will never get better with new updates I fear. Hell single core processing is getting worse recently in favor of having like 16-20 core cpu's.

Fear not, soon you will be worried about making them NOT do this.
Anyway, put them in one pasture. To reap extra benefits, train them as war dogs and put them at the entrance. Soon you will have anti-thief platoon of war dogs.

Thanks guys

Just started this game about 5 days ago. Been following the quickstart guide so far.

The hardest thing so far has been understanding how the trading works. I got a bud of mine that helps me out a bunch, though he's sleeping right now.

Another big struggle I've had is losing people to fey moods (I think this is their path to become legendary craftdwarves or somethin like that).

I've only restarted my game once so far. Losing was fun
>>
>>179888253
Also, my dwarves aren't using the training weapons I made for them I think, all my recruits became Wrestlers... Not that I mind, I find that entertaining hah
>>
>>179887820
check Therapist and make sure your dog isn't gay. If it's straight then just pasture it in the same place/room with the females and wait.

>>179888253
Just make sure you buy one bin of each type of cloth and thread from the first caravan and a couple of metal bars and you're good for moods. If there's bones in the mood and he's stuck just slaughter a few more cats, sometimes they want more bones than you have.
>>
>>179888325
dont waste your time with training weapons, if you're unlucky they'll get attached to them and you wont be able to stop them from using them later. just make a few wood/bone crossbows from a Bowyer's workshop at the start and work on a metal industry once you have bedrooms for ~100 dwarves, dining room, nobles, hospital set up.
>>
Why are the silly humans attacking my fortress? I've never done anything wrong to them. They also arrived with the "vile force of darkness" message. The hell?
>>
>>179888253
Oh, and one more thing - keep in mind that pregnancies last a while. If you have 20 dogs, 10 males and 10 females, and then decide to geld males, don't be surprised if a few months later you will have 40 dogs. This might become quite a problem, unless you're a heartless monster willing to butcher cute and cuddly puppers.
>>
>>179888458
Is it the actual human civ, or goblins with captured humans in their ranks?

Check your civilizations screen (i forget the hotkey, c maybe?) and see if you're at war with them. Maybe your civ was at war with them before you embarked, or you pissed off one of their caravans.

>>
>>179891326
It took them some time to get everything ready, also my dumb marksdwarf thought he had to charge at them directly, but was caught in the line of fire of the ballistas.
It was pretty devestating when they did hit them, some arrows went straight through their ranks, killing multiple humans. It's really hard to get the timing correctly though. If you wait too long for example your siege operators will get thirsty quickly and only fire one volley, before fucking off to your dining hall, while the entrance gets overrun.
>>

Anyone up for some magma challenge?

1. Stairway to hell
Embark on volcano. Make the entrance to your fort a staircase in the middle of volcano pipe filled with magma. Bonus points for using windows.

2. Warm welcome
Implement a defensive system that uses only magma and flow control.

3. Magma city
Variant a: Build your fortress directly on top of the magma sea. Bonus points for using magma channels instead of walls to separate rooms.
Variant b: Build an aboveground Venice-like city, but with magma instead of water.
Variant c: Build a fortress completely submerged in magma, from sides, below and above. Bonus points for using windows.

4. Magma calendar
Build a device that utilizes magma to show current month. Bonus points for showing days.

5. Onsen episode
Replace every single body of water with magma. Bonus points for making magma rivers actually flow. Bonus points for making whole thing as inconspicuous as possible.

Don't know why this meme won't die. Weapon attachment doesn't prevent you from assigning different weapons. Dwarves will use whatever their uniform tells them too, as specific or as general as you make it, irrespective of any gear attachment.

That's been a thing for as long necromancers have. When you butcher an animal it makes a hair product with as many parts as the animal had with hair on them, which can be raised by a necromancer. Toady has said that he doesn't consider reanimated hair to be a bug even though it wasn't explicitly intended.
>>
>>179898563
It isn't much weirder than a reanimated skeleton if you think about it.

Oh, yeah. That bug. It's supposed to be fixed, although I occasionally see people posting about unkillable body parts, hair included, so it seems that it's only partially fixed.
>>
>>179900980
I had a seemingly-unkillable undead echidna in this fort, although I think that was less the hair bug and more to do with its rolling into a ball ability
>>
>>179900980
It's for the better. Also armed necro zombies are a lot more manageable now. 3 dwarfs in full iron managed to deal with 30 zombies in a few raids. You just have to manage their stamina, as they get exhausted.
>>
>>179900980
The hair and skin being invincible is fixed... unless it's just a severed HEAD hair or HEAD skin, which IS invincible. At least, that's my experience from my reanimating evil mountain fortress.
>>
>>179901564
Zombies don't use abilities, all they do is bum rush fucking livies.

>oh we have galena thats silver and copper I'm pretty sure!

I don't understand how people can be wrong about ores/alloys literally whenever they bring them up. Like you think you'd get lucky a few times, but nope! Whenever someone says something in the lets play they're just super fucking wrong.

It really grinds my granite.
>>
>>179901713

Not one that shows up in my nobles screen. He already shares his royal bedroom and dining room with the queen, so I just gave him a second chair that partially overlaps my queen's overkill throne room. Two artifact pieces of furniture counteracts the penalty for overlapping rooms, and since the king consort's is much smaller and doesn't encompass the second artifact in the room it shouldn't cause jealousy in my duke or queen.

Hey you, yes you good stunty

Come over here and take a look on these new fantastic scratching sticks, cutting edge straight out of the dungeons of Towertech.

The shaft is top quality pinewood and comes in a wide selection of leather grips, such as zebra stripes.
We take pride in knowing our products will deliver and MORE.
The scratching device comes in different types such as the heavy duty skeleton gorilla hand for those with an entire jungle of hair on their back or the lighter and more nimble Elf hand for getting to those special spots.
The entire device is started by pushing the button on the shaft that will inject a heavy dose of our special laboratory brew, bringing the scratching device vigorously to life and scratching.

The special brew container is inserted into the grip from below and will last up til 15 times before needing a replacement.
The device will make for a great stress relief and is guaranteed to give you a hair raising experience.

>Due to necrotic energy and residue in the scratching device please keep i t away from necks and other vital body parts.

Well I actually made the mod I wanted for DF, which is a mod that adds a few more races to the game, but just in general I would like it if more mod authors had compatibility in mind, and made it so their files didn't override the vanilla ones so you could mix and match mods much easier. I honestly don't understand why more people don't do that.

Whatever I catch or the elves bring in breeding pairs. Large and/or predators are always nice, elk birds and cave crocs are cavern mvps.

Tiger men used to have a pet value and [PET_EXOTIC] so elves would bring them to sell sometimes. The would act like sapient citizens, eating and drinking and running for mayor. If they came with a profession they would do work, but you couldn't assign them labors. Never got a breeding pair, sadly.

R8 my above ground fort. Not from aesthetics side, I am talking about practicality. There are more impressive structures out there, I know. I focused on something practical while keeping blocky-dwarfy style. If it works, melee fighters will brawl in the middle with support from above. Blue is where gate is, whole thing is 5 tile high.

When I enable my dwarves to train so they spar or demonstrate should I give the squad all the same weapon? Do they cross-weapon train for both sparring and demonstrations? I only have a small squad but I wanted their weapons varied a little bit.

1 tile corridors aren't practical at all, traffic-wise. If you're going to make dwarves fight 5 blocks up in the air, make sure they won't bug themselves out through the walls.

There's a long-running bug where dwarves warp through a 1-tile thick wall when sparring. You'll be safe as long as you don't make them spar right next to the outer walls. And even if they do fall, you still won't be as unlucky as the guy who built his barracks next to a volcano.

nothing for android, as far as I know.

if you want an open world game that feels kinda like DF, then I recommend Unreal World or Cataclysm.

there's also URR, but it's in very early development, and in my opinion, the dev is a prick who ruined his dev blog when he started blogging about his personal life there.

That's a dead givaway that he hasn't written a word about the development.

Instead, he has probably written some more pretentious essays about Dark Souls or postmodern gambling theory.

If it had really been about his game, a simple "this is what I accomplished this week" text would do. Nothing to polish for a month before finally deciding that it's fit for publishing.

Did anyone see a fell mood? Can someone actually fight back against mad artist?
>>
>>180004813
I've never had one, but unless I'm mistaken, the mood type is decided by personality. like, you get morbid moods if altruism is low. if you mod the base personality of the dorfs, you might get more likely to get certain moods.

you're best off checking the wiki, though.
>>
You can only get fell and macabre moods from highly stressed dwarves. Which are basically impossible to end up with without intending it.
>>
>>180005946
I love the idea of a fell mood, although the idea that it's just craftsdwarf shit that results is disappointing. hopefully someday in the distant future its products/origins can be a little darker and more special

URR has an extremely primitive form of history generation.

basically, it's just a seemingly random bunch of events that happens to each civ. as far as I know, none of these events have an impact on the actual world. you can read headstones on graveyards, and occationally it says that someone died in battle a certain year, but these battles never coincide with the "real" historical battles of that world.

4. Make a lifetime supply of soap out of lye and tallow that has been laying for years in your food stockpile after you had to specially butcher your favorite alpaca because some dorf demanded bones and refused to use of all those goblin corpses laying around.
5. Dismantle the soap maker's workshop.

>>

I think, while cool and all to have thousands of dorfs, the game is not designed to handle the management of so many at the same time, so you'd have an awful amount of idlers constantly
>>
So, thinking of picking up the game again after a few years of not playing, is it worth it? What I mean, is the game stable? Do sieges work? From reading a comment here and there it seems to me that the fps death problem has become worse, anything else I should worry about?
>>
>>180067651
You can't do it through pre-defined raws, you need to modify your save file with needed raws.
>>
>>180068692
>is the game stable?
In the last two releases, if a weapon in a weapon trap breaks, so does the game, because no one told Toady about shared pointers.
So, about this stable.
>>
>>180068973
it's fixed in the coming update tho famalam
>>
>>180068692
It's a good point to start playing again, since there will be a big update in about a month. The current version is quite stable with very few unavoidable crashes Sieges still aren't as frequent as in 34.11 but contrary to 40.24's drought they actually do happen. The next update is likely to improve this with dwarven diplomacy and being able to provoke attacks by launching your own.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4IECphJ2RM

Every fortress needs to have a lever like this.
>>
>>180068582
I have so many recreation areas in my fort, it would delight me to have enough dwarves that they all got traffic. I have statue gardens that have never seen an idler.
I get what you're saying, though. I think Toady would probably scale up the labor management aspects of fort mode accommodate large scale industry if computing power ever allowed it before DF was complete. If you look at worldgen settlements he clearly intends for the world economy to be heavier on both the supply and demand sides that is possible to simulate in fort mode. Not that we should be banking on a tech that's decades away from consumers' desktops to get us there.
>>
>>180068882
I thought you are talking about taking control over worldgen demon by bodyswap.

Thanks. I think I was infact playing version 34.10-34.11 and I mainly used the lazy newb starter pack just because how "comfortable" it made playing the game. Has it been updated to 43.05 or anything after 40.24? I've checked above but I can only seem to find 40.24

If you have enough flux and coal (you will still need it even if you use magma forges), steel is always preferable. Keep in mind however that steel bars are far more tedious to produce than other metals - you need five smelting jobs to create 4 steel bars as opposed to just one with most metals. Equipping your entire military with steel armor will take some time, so you should consider forging temporary equipment from bronze, or - if you have abundance of it - iron.

>>180089519
judging by the list on the development page, unless he runs into major bugs or dreams up something new he has to include, it's likely
>>
>>180089572
If you didn't touch the pop triggers, then you won't get any sieges at all. In vanilla, you need to reach a population of 80 before you start getting goblin sieges.

If you want to change it, go into the entity raws. From there, scroll down to the goblins. Now, look for a token that says [PROGRESS_TRIGGER_POP_SIEGE:3]. The "3" here means that you'll get sieges at 80 dorfs. If you change it to "2", you'll get the sieges at 50 instead.

I can't guarantee that it's possible to change this on an already generated world, but it's a good thing to have in mind if you plan on playing with a low population.

So, a bunch of crundles appeared in the caverns and spooked my dorfs. The idiots ran up trees and the crundles fell on top of the trees from a hole above and have slowly been killing them since. The non-trapped dorfs who have tried to help the trapped ones have continuously canceled their jobs because of those crundles on top of the trees. Because of that, they too have became stuck near the trees, waiting to execute their jobs without getting canceled and slowly dying from dehydration in the process. This has been going on for two seasons.

Since then, this has become quite a miserable fortress. I'm looking for ideas on how to quickly end their misery. I have done the following: released 3 tame giant cave spiders and disabled animal traning (one is already semi-wild), removed traps from all entrances in case of a siege or forgotten beast attack.

It seems kinda boring to just pierce an adamantine vein and let the demons clean up, especially because I've done that already to a couple fortresses.

It's pretty common in old worlds.

As history progresses, entire populations of animal people join the civs en masse. This seems to be especially common for elf civs, but I might be wrong about that.

I guess savagery has a part in it, since animal people only appear in regions with high savagery.

Bones are great for density of fire. Very few things can survive the winnowing fire of 50 marksdwarves firing at them with their machine gun like crossbows. Even humans and goblins with iron armor still have a few gaps that will kill them.

Pretty much the only thing that can survive is Bronze Colossi, demons, angels, and forgotten beasts/titans.

Do cage traps and the ground count as melee only?

Making a fort on a glacier covered with blue roofie juice that regularly finds itself under siege from various necromancer towers and has a hard pop cap of 30 for the first 15 years is not well suited to let the dorfs go up to the surface much.

Does the starter pack launcher not work anymore?

I had a fatal HDD crash yesterday and had to download all my shit, including DF, thought I might as well get the starter pack.

I remember you had to run the starter pack launcher to get an easy access to various options and tilesets, yet no matter how I open the launcher, as administrator or whatever, it dosn't start.

DF itself plays fine, some weird tileset I dunno, I think its phoebus?

If your fort is the mountainhome, and your queen dies, but a relative who isn't currently at your fort takes the throne, will they immigrate?

Not sure where you've been for the past 3 years, but marksdwarves' rate of fire was drastically reduced in .40, and the strength of most bolts was nerfed. Bone bolts aren't even useful for hunting anymore, much less real combat. They're pretty much only useful for practice, creatures made from water/fire/soot/etc, and making invaders dodge into whatever you want to actually kill them. What you say is still mostly true for most metal bolts, although silver and copper ones will still only rarely penetrate armor.

So where does the actual entering happen? I don't see an opening.
>>
>>180142732
It's 4x4, the default. I'm not showing all of it, just enough to show off the entrance.

the plan is to get a magma reservoir on top of the entrance proper, and hook it up so I can flood the flat part of the bridge when the elves siege. Which will probably not be until the next version, when I can send out raiding parties of legendary military dwarves to subjugate them, considering how my immense abuse have just convinced them to stop showing up altogether. Sad, but against the unstoppable onslaught of the goblins we needed a new home.
>>

>>
>>180142889
The entrance is at the top of the mountain, in the granite building. It slopes into a depot just below the surface, which was important before I had the building completed because the mountain occasionally has deadly paralytic vapor.

If you look really closely just below the granite, you can see the windows of my tavern.

Mountains do not tremble at the sweeping sun or dancing stars. They do not groan for the fires of hell, but only take those streams of magma to grow.

The seas, they stay; they do not care for the bridges and dams of men, for the rain will come. The rain will come, and no man will be there to stop the flood, keep the river from its path.

And what fool could challenge the skies? For the dragon falls easy to the blade--yet black and blue remain, siblings keeping vigil, never to tire.

Here I am. Here I am.

Alone again.

Great beasts have fallen around me, and great friends too. I wonder, if I speak those words of power, could they rise?--

Ah, but you are shades, pale beyond pale, shadow beyond dark shadow. I am sorry, dear souls, I will burn you and leave you to your dreams.

I burned her too, a few years ago now. Near this place, in fact. Or one like it. The mind blurs such shapes together, you see. She died to such foul dogs as these, like you, my friends. But I will weave for you a bladed tapestry--a poem or so. Wherever I do see them, they shall die. Though a mighty roc left me with but a hand for a blade for two, they will fall. One for two--if I had two as one again, oh, if I had one, one...

The one who killed her still roams.

Off again, off again it is. Back across the sand, the grass, the snow. I wonder who I shall find, who may aid me to vanquish these creatures? Perhaps nobody, or everybody all at once.

Alone, alone together.

Permit me, if you will, to dream as I go, and recall names of days past, companions and monsters slain…

After my love was killed, I drifted. I sought out dark fortresses and assailed their inhabitants. I thought of all the people I knew who had died at the hands of goblins, saw all the mangled corpses and relived the ashen stench. They drove my blade through the green-skinned crowds.

But today I see the goblins. See their faces. Their terror.

What were they, but men? What was I, but they? Their soldiers, their raiders, did they see my victims? Did their brains conjure my visage as they loosed arrows and cleaved bone?

I was a wheel for a violent caravan, turning in my place to face the ground--and driving the wagon forward to death’s market.

So I shattered my spokes and crawled through the dens of fell beasts, plying my sword’s art through their flesh and wings.

Rifa Wanderleap. Fifty lives the roc stole, and six more were given in taking his. Mercenaries and adventurers from the elven and dwarven conclaves, who came with me to defend their homes from such a devil.
Poor brave souls.

For such a giant, he flowed. Though an ocean wave might be more forgiving to the shore, and a cliffside might be less battered by the water than my friends by his claws.

When at last they had all fallen or fled, it was just us. Two.

He landed and settled twenty paces away. For a little while we just strafed each other in circles, staring.
In his eyes I found the strangest kinship. An animal, I know. An animal…?

Then, up in the air. A hurricane dive. I wait with blade turned upwards, wait, wait, wait roll bring the edge across and a good cut along his left leg, a shriek from he and a grunt from I.

Up again, strafe, circle, he goes up again, down. Same thing, other side. He staggers as the earth crunches beneath him, a little space left between us.

Bladepoint in the dirt, left arm outstretched, a beckoning for a duel.

This time, no altitude. He flies straight for me, fast, almost by surprise but just in time I am on his side and the sword drives through the wing sweeping over.

Wise now from his suffering, we are on the ground together, spinning around each other. He goes in to bite, but he thinks too much--smart creature, I lament his wits--and I stay still, the two hander flies into his throat.

Counter circle with straight, straight with circle.

A titanic thief, and not above choking on the blood I took from his throat as payment. Justice had its way.

But as he struggled. As his beak ran red. As his eyes flickered, flickered with the light of life, torchlight snubbed--had I not killed a thief, and someone else besides?

Enore The Radiant, who took thirty-three--and another. Her name, what was it? What was it, her name, beautiful elf, beautiful fighter, clawed to pieces, her eyes, her eyes, green and gone--

Pili.

Enore killed Pili, and I cut her wings and her legs and her head for it--

But I was alone. Alone on the field. And too slow. Enore was faster than her brother, or was he her mate?

Who did I kill…

Speed, speed, speed. In came the beak, too sharp for iron. Sharp, sharp knife pain in the wrist, I still remember how my throat uttered for relief in that moment, but my arm still moved, the blade still moved, and off came the neck of a second roc.

--and smashed her eggs, her children, the potential, the future, I crushed. I even thought about keeping them, guarding them.

But I killed.

Enore took my hand.

Who did I kill?

My right hand, severed clean by her beak. Blood, and I was whiter than the shades, but I did not die. Did not die, but why not? Why not die and be? I did not know then that I could.

So I did not die, for lack of knowing. And now I know the secret, and cannot die.

Cannot be...

But I did not leave my blade at this juncture. Give up my quest, no. I returned home, to Ocgiithrek, and trained. A new style for an old fighter. And drilled, and the days and years and weeks and minutes and hours and months surged into one, one hand for a blade for two.

Didn't know that which I would know, but I had my sword.

All I ever needed, really.

How the hell did he destroy floor, why is he just strolling around aimlessly instead of going for other buildings and last but not the least, HOW THE FUCK DID HE EVEN GET HERE.

Also it's kind of amusing how everyone seems to be perfectly fine with new mascot of the fort. I think I'm going to keep him.

I made a stockpile for armor and weapons in the barrack's room. And they placed two bins within the stockpile. One of them is empty and the other has 2 copper shields in it.
My dwarves are leaving maces and other weapons around in random places on the floor of my fortress. What's the problem?

Thy won't necessarily put their shit back on the stockpile, they'll just drop it when they go off duty and then someone will haul it back.

Have them hang onto their uniforms when off duty.
>>
How do I get my marksdwarf to carry a crossbow+quiver with him at all times, without having him always set as active?
I want him to haul shit etc but be able to pull him away to shoot an elk man at a moment's notice, and this fucker loves to go out without his crossbow.

I'm going to jump in again and try to learn this darn game for the 6th time now, I plan on only using the wiki tutorial this time instead of having to deal with outdated video tutorials.
Are startepack things like better looking tilesets and Dwarf Therapist essential or just crutches in the long term I can do without?

>>
>>180201441
you can still use video tutorials for some of the more basic stuff, and if you want you can check the wiki if something has changed.
tilesets aren't a necessity, but you can use some if you want a more intuitive-looking game. you can switch back to ascii at any time.
as for the therapist, it makes things a helluva lot easier. it is also a convinient tool to learn what each labor does. it's just a great tool for faster and easier micromanagement. of course, you can switch it off anytime and play the game raw.

Is it true that "simply" multithreading it would speed it up alot?
>>
My merchants won't leave my fortress. Their wagon went missing mysteriously, as if it despawned while they were in the depot.
Now they stand in the middle of my hallway near the exit, and they're creating miasma and yet none of them are dead.

Help it's been ingame months.
>>
>>180204358
I don't know much about programming but I heard that the biggest problem is that multithreading simply is almost impossible/an incredibly tedious and time intensive task because the game wasn't build from the ground up to support it.

It probably would help though if it was made possible.
>>
>>180204358
Yes.
>>
>>180204613
so, what did 64-bit update actually do? did it just boost world generation and not gameplay?

>>
>>180204596
are they elves? they're probably just bumming around like the hippies they are. the miasma is their natural smell
>>
>>180204358
Yeah a huge amount. Even just putting temperature in it's own thread would speed up the game quite a bit. I'm sure the community would suck Toady's dick for the chance to work on it for him too.
>>
>>180205209
It helped gameplay, its kind of hard to tell how much because of feature creep eating performance while performance is being improved.
>>
>>180208510
Temperature can be turned off completely though. What would really benefit from that - pathfinding.
>>
>>180205209
All the 64-bit update did was allow for the game to use more than 4 gigs of RAM. Essentially allowing you to generate fuckhuge words with loooong histories and embark on fuckhuge sites, which isn't really of much use when you're still better off with small to medium worlds and 4x4 embarks b/c of how poorly DF runs.
>>
>>180204613
If the game could literally be re-written to support multithreading, not just "multi-threaded support guys", but like the actual job systems, pathfinding, etc being re-written to utilize multithreading it would exponentially help performance especially with the new processors getting released.

I can't even imagine was playing DF would be like with an 18 core 3.2 Ghz i-9 processor with like 32 gigs of 3200 DDR4 ram and an m2 SSD. You could legit have forts with like 500+ dwarves on like 8x8 embarks probably.

Modest Mod to boost FPS. There used to be some awesome mods in .34 I used to use Fortress Defense, Dwarf Chocolate and Fear the Night sometimes but I haven't bothered seeing if they're updated for the current version.
>>
>>180208920
Which would require redesigning and rewriting entire game, while strictly adhering to modern programming standards to keep this shit from falling apart. And this is something Toady is neither willing nor able to do, so we have to wait for sources and hope some genius will be able to comprehend what the hell is going on. I don't even want to think about jumping straight into 15+ years worth of autistic basement code.

Drop every dorf but one into magma and play as lone survivor.
>>
>>180204596
This is what happened:
The wagon saw something that spooked it (like a buzzard or a goblin's toenail) and imploded. This interrupted their attempt to trade and they forgot how to leave (known bug). The shit that was in the wagon was forbidden, including the now rotting foodstuffs, which are spewing miasma.
d b c over the depot to unforbid all the stuff the wagon dropped. If you have a refuse pile your dwarves will carry the rotting food to it. If the merchants aren't dwarves, kill them. If they are dwarves, wait for them to go insane. Deal with whatever scared them or it will happen again.
