Exactly. They all could swap persona and had affinities that could be dealbreakers considering how they influenced SP costs, or at worst compatibility, be unable to use at all/only be able to use its support skill but not be able to actually equip them in battle.

Besides, they didn't completely rely in persona stats as in neo persona, back then characters had their own human stats that then were averaged with the stats of the equipped persona. They still favored certain builds so its not like all characters were the same if they equipped X persona as if would happen if they entirely relied in persona for stats.

Anyways, the biggest excuse I've heard from neo persona babbies about party wide persona swap systems is that the characters would be too overpowered, as if they had never played the original trilogy. I mean, it's not like you can create ultimate persona at early or midgame, inheritance limitations is a thing and in their ideal overpowered scenario, skill cards are super plentiful or the game shits repels and drain cards at you.

It's not like neo persona really lets enemies take advantage of it that easily. Just remove the one character most susceptible to get weakness hit and that's all, and I doubt it would kill not using let's say skull or panther in a single dungeon where their weakness is spammed.

So yeah, even in the current format enemy use of one more is trivialized to the point it is a non issue considering the game gives you a shitton of pointless character that are that numerous only due you cannot do anything about their weaknesses, and a bit later in the game, you can swap them on the fly with the same ease you could swap persona in previous game in the unlikely case you fucked up and brought somebody weak to the main element of the dungeon

I would honestly say the Victory Cry Kaiwan trick in Persona 4 Golden is a bit more broken.

I don't really think the ability to restore SP in of itself is a huge gamebreaker to begin with...It mostly just sort of acts to extend the days you have to go into the dungeon instead of blowing through it all at once. I guess it can help a little with bosses in battle, but you still need to be prepared.

For me a bigger gamebreaker is whipping out Siegfried in P3. Vorpal Blade + strength boosts + great status = GG to almost anything. I once oneshot a fucking boss with it.

And forget about challenge on any difficulty if you do unlock Monad, just run from anything you can't knock down, kill what you can, easy level 99. Hell, Nyx on Hard is piss easy way before that, it's kind of a shame.

Mood whiplash is a problem in persona but I don't think it's genuinely a bad as an issue as you make it out to be. In fact, I can't even really think of one example where this happens - maybe P4, since that game has atrocious writing, but even then it feels like you're exaggerating. It also helps that the situations in persona are a lot less high stakes, at least until the last 80% of the game for nu-persona, whereas in SMT the characters are constantly surrounded by death and fear.

There's nothing to reason about it. If a game is just constantly dreary and depressing it's not going to be fun. Teens doing dumb stuff or girls acting cute or whatever is not out of place if it's put in the right areas, I think we can both agree on that.

For me the thing that really drew me into SMT was the gameplay, fusing demons and customizing my party. Persona just doesn't offer that much customization, and to me the Persona stories tend to drag out and some of the social links are cool, but a lot of them I could do without. When I'm playing a mainline SMT game what I'm excited about is what skills I can get to next, or what new demons I can fuse, the story is of secondary importance.

Mainline games put gameplay first, Persona games put the story first.
