I thought Hard mode was actually easier than Normal mode, at least so far. I don't know if it's because the enemy count is higher, encounter rates are up, or enemies are stronger, but all my characters are higher levels going through it than they were on normal. I've got the impresssion that Echoes wasn't done with a high replay value in mind. At best you can give Cliff, Faye or both to Celica, recruit Deen instead of Sonia or vise versa and give your villagers different classes. There aren't 50+ units so you could choose different characters to train and all but one support could be casually unlocked during one walkthrough. Seems to be closer to you average jRPG that doesn't bother with NG+ than more recent FE.

Actually the reason NM is so popular is mainly down to one thing - the MU. Kris was really well received and took the story in a very interesting direction compared to the original boring story of the Hero King. I keep all units until I have a dupe, but if you REALLY want to put a blade tome on something mobile like Leo or a one hit nuker like +Atk Lilina/Sanaki, then go ahead. I enjoyed the supports, but I do have to agree that there was a lack in rather obvious ones, some sort of patched each other up, such as Kliff and Tobin's support basically saying that they feel inferior to Gray, which could have lead Kliff to not want to talk to Gray about it, but that's just speculation.

On the Kamui thing I feel like it was a missed opportunity into why Valbar decided to hire Kamui of all mercenaries.
