>>176221258
Also wormhole can actually be pretty bad for this in the wrong situation.
Wormhole scales badly with bigger and bigger fleets, sure, small fleets will jump fast, but jump fleets can move freely and have a fixed jump time.
Rushing construction ships into enemy territory works pretty well against retarded AI, but against human players you will have a lot of trouble if they have even a slight fleet advantage because they'll be smart and simply wipe your wormhole stations
>>176221447
If you pick a pacifist xenophobe (spiritualist works well with this) you can combine agrarian idyll and inward perfection.
It's COMPLETELY fucking broken and makes tall empires insanely powerful because you can complete 4-5 Unity trees before a normal human player has 1-2 full at least.

He's saying it's too OP for him to consider using it against the AI.
>>176222365
> You need like 2-4 farms for a single temple
The biggest effect is the early game boost.
Instead of having like, 1-2 unity a turn, you start off with 6 early on.
When playing with human players, by the time my friends have about 10 unity a turn I have upwards of 40-50 and usually am limiting my expansion just a little bit more than usual.
Putting the unity into Discovery, the first perk of Economics and the Exploration tree, you have much higher science output and reduced unity cost from additional pops.
>>176222365
>Why? +5 happiness and +30% unity sounds pretty sweet.
I don't choose it because I find it too good. It requires pacifist which is already like 20% unity. 50% unity gain is just far too much. There's another civic that's just 15% unity but it's kinda bad compared to inwards. IP is getting nerfed tomorrow though. Also

Hardly a cost though really. Xenophobe's really good due to the border range and pacifist grants more unity. All you really lose is a little bit if diplomatic clout and the ability to cede planets. You can still liberate and vassalize people through war.

Pacifism in Stellaris doesn't mean the state doesn't have any kind of monopoly on force. Pacifist empires still have armies and navies.
It more refers to using violence to achieve goals, but it's quite easy to rationalise pacifism by calling those who resist the actual violent ones and any violence used in response is just rightful self defense.
Ethics in Stellaris are allowed to be hypocritical because we know from humans that hypocrisy is pretty important/central to most societies.

Correction: almost nobody can make good strategy AI.
Making AI seem intelligent or lifelike (or just simply 'fair') is quite possible in games that involve characters running around in an environment.
FEAR, GTAV, MGSV and Half Life did that very well for their respective eras, but even they have weird bugs that seem to be almost unavoidable.
That's accomplished by giving pawns routines to make decisions and putting node maps in the environment with weighting. That way you can have enemies that make logical decisions, but most importantly, fast and less predictable decisions.
In strategy, it's a lot more abstract and long term. It's easy for me to point out the flaws, that AI doesn't make long term plans, that the AI doesn't set goals for itself and then try to accomplish specific goals (potentially making diplomatic/economic decisions based on those arbitrary goals), but unless you have complex routines and decision making built with that in mind, it's a hell of a lot of work.
How the AI in Stellaris SHOULD be designed if you want more roleplay capability, is for the different personalities to have heavily weighted, arbitrary goals.
When an AI finds a really fantastic system close to an empire they're hostile with, they don't do what a human player might do, send a fleet to contest that system, potentially declaring war if an enemy colony ship attempts to colonize, they just send a colony ship over.
It's rare for war in Stellaris to break out over any particular incident, as we see in actual human players (and real life), it just ends up being an algorithmic decision based on diplomacy numbers and relative power combined with their ethics.
>>176226353
Stellaris tried doing that with Ruler personalities in EU4. Didn't change much from what I saw except sometimes countries could act retarded on purpose and get a continent-spanning coalition to form against them.
>>176226632
>except sometimes countries could act retarded on purpose and get a continent-spanning coalition to form against them.
Countries do sometimes act retarded in real life though, it just seems a good idea at the time.
The bigger problem is just a fundamental inability for the AI to recognise when it's being set up for something (i.e being blocked off or being surrounded), and I won't pretend I know how to fix that.
>>176226632
>Stellaris tried doing that
Meant Paradox. What the fuck am I doing
>>176226353
I have never seen a good AI in a strategy game.
They all have their own flaws, and the problem with strategy is that if you get used to the AI, you are unable to play against humans opponents, because you'll get used to exploit flaws in the AI.
For Starcraft, it's harassment and simultaneous deep strikes, for Supreme Commander, it's turret push...
You get used to abusing AI flaws and it makes you unable to fight humans, and that's a shame.
Some games embrace it (like AI War, who fully expect you to abuse the AI to win), and Stellaris does so, but only partially. Wiz did say that the AI never tried to win and that they only tried to stop you, they should've developped that aspect further by making it clear it's not going to win.
Also
>Half-Life
>good AI
I distinctly remember backpedaling and killing the enemies one by one when they tried to flush me out. The soldiers had grenades, but the ayyys were completely stupid.
>>176226896
It's not just you that's getting used to the AI, it's the whole playerbase.
The devs should periodically update the AI to make it more resilient against the most popular exploitative strategies.
How does shield regen work? If you have 2 shield regen and 100 shields, is that 2%, or a flat 2? How often does it occur, daily or monthly like hull regen?
>>176227014
But then it would just become a race between the players and the devs to develop a meta to beat the AI.
>>176226896
>I distinctly remember backpedaling and killing the enemies one by one when they tried to flush me out. The soldiers had grenades, but the ayyys were completely stupid.
Consider it for the time, simply AI doing anything resembling flanking was more than most games were trying at the time.
I'm not trying to fanboy HL1 though, wasn't the only game to be playing around with AI more complex than drones. In fact one of the biggest issues with AI in shooters is the balance between godlike and retarded. Devs don't want to make AI opponents too quick or effective to stop the game from becoming bullshit, but sometimes they cripple them too much (slow reactions/bad aim) and they become easy.
FEAR managed to pull it off better, but was limited to very simple blocky environments with heavy nodemapping.
>>176227239
>a race between the players and the devs to develop a meta to beat the AI.Welcome to Xcom: Long War
>>176227134
This one?
So the flying porchmonkey empire I'm practially allied with had themselves a little rebellion on their original home planet due to a single Hive Mind Hollow worm inexplicably finding his way as a citizen on said planet. Don't fucking ask me how (Probably: Paradox favorite pet xenophiles dindu nuffins XD XD XD OPEN BORDERS). Anyway they rebelled and broke free from the main empire and as soon as they did I declare war on them for not being tolerant and peaceful enough. So now I have a planet full of angry porchmonkeys. Obviously I can't purge them, because I play as an egalitarian simply because I wanted the civic "Corporate Dominion" and it goes without saying that I can not let these uppity negroes live side by side with my cute little geckos. Wat do?
>>176227406

>>176227334
>Consider it for the time
Sorry, I'm unable to do that. Half-Life is the second FPS I ever played. Unreal was the first one.
I guess that compared to Doom, yeah, they're pretty intelligent. I don't even remember if the monsters in Doom followed you or if they just moved randomly once you were detected.

So i have these space ekves confined in their bubble and soon i can get diplomacy traditions for federations
Are these guys worth a Federation?
Are Federations worth at all? First time playing this game basically
>>176227534
>Sorry, I'm unable to do that. Half-Life is the second FPS I ever played. Unreal was the first one.
Understandable.
Admittedly even the better AI, all it really does is make different decisions based on how you play and the maps have good nodemaps so AI can find better 'paths'. It's a step above the standard, which is call of duty tier moving turrets that do little else than randomly move around and shoot.
AI for games can be pretty interesting considering just how awkward and difficult it can be to code, especially considering the limitations of the mid 90's.
>I hated it to be honest.
Certainly isn't for everyone.
>>176227881
Yeah. The AI is the reason why old games age usually very poorly.
Empire Earth comes to my mind due to personal trauma over the many, many, MANY B-52 it used.
Supreme Commander comes to mind too, albeit there's an Anon who keeps saying that the AI in FA is actually very good.
>3-way AI war ends with 3 new liberated factions being created
>10 fucking years of NAPs, independence guarantees, independence guarantees being cancelled months later, defensive pacts, rivalries, rivalries cancelled, vassalization etc etc etc
>>176228096
Honestly i'd say a large part of 'fun' AI isn't even 'effective' AI, but AI that seem like they make unique decisions.
If you can give the illusion of lifelike AI, it doesn't even really matter from the player's perspective.
>>176228240
True.
If it wasn't for the AI reacting and communicating, FEAR and Unreal Tournament 2004 wouldn't be that fun.
>>176228112
Welcome to the space balkans
>>176228096
>the AI in FA is actually very good.
You can do pretty well in Supcom if you just liek build stuff. The AI doesn't need to be very clever to spam things but it still has no idea on what's GOOD to build or anything like that. Anything above normal still cheats out the ass for free money and you can actually grab that cheat income by having cheat AI allies.
Most of the "good AI" meme is just UEFags building layered shields, playing tower defense and calling it good AI.
The AI engine remains the most horribly programmed thing ever and the AI can kill sim speed by just building engi bots. No it doesn't have to make sense.

I meant the time zones would be impractical since these games tend to take long to finish. For me it would only be possible to play with people from other time zones during the weekends.
A question for Fanatic Purifiers.
If I have the required ethos and adopt the civic in the mid-game to take on a threat like, say, the Unbidden or an Awakened Ascendancy, but then I remove the civic and replace it with something else, is the diplomatic penalty removed with it or am I going to be at -1000 with everyone forever?

Am I retarded or is there literally no reason but to spam default Corvettes over the force cap limit in Stellaris?
they're so cheap cost, maintenance, and time wise that i see no reason to not just build a shit ton of them, it's no issue to go over 3 to even 4 times over the force limit with them because they're so cheap it doesn't matter.
I've tested this with a friend and whenever our doomstacks of similar cost Mineral wise went at it, his being tier 5 Battleship cruiser stack while mine was just a fucking shit ton of corvettes, i would always win and only lose half of my forces, but i could build it back so fast that losing even 80% of it didn't fucking matter.
i didn't properly optimize my corvette stack with stuff like fleet academy or stuff that would drive the maintenance cost down even more to allow myself to build maybe as high as 5 times over the force limit, but it's seems as if it's not only cheaper than fully teched out fleets but able to consistently beat them as well.
i can only imagination with the Devouring Swarm civic that's coming in 1.6 or with the Fanatic Purifiers that this is gonna go full retard, as you increase the power of each corvette without increasing cost.

>>176234329
You realize that corvettes are supposed to counter Battleships, right?
>>176234519
the Cruisers had a ton of medium and small weapon as to try and replicate a balance fleet you'd expect from most players.
>>176234483
That English works fine, anon is just retarded.
Anyway, corvettes will always kill cruisers and battleships unless they are outfitted with flak due to the evasion chance being >80% most of the time.
>>176234329
>tier 5 Battleship cruiser stack
Skewed results, your friend is a retard. First off you shouldn't stack battleships at all and cruisers should never be over 30% of your fleet. If most of his stack was L and M weapons, no wonder he got demolished by corvettes.
Second, in the early game, yes. However the corvette locust swarm strat doesn't let you mix in any specialized craft because they suddenly have maintenance up the bunghole.

>>176237684

Probably because having a powerful species that doesn't cost food being able to grow with like +166% speed would be a tad OP.
>>176238164
Well we need SOMETHING because building them takes for-fucking EVER.
It's actually worse to upgrade your own species beyond Cybernetic, because then you lose the ability to produce two pops on a planet at once.
>>176238164
That's what I want though.
>>176238035
Hyperlane forces you to travel on pre-determined paths that can be very easily blocked if you're unlucky, not to mention you could very easily need to take a circuitous route to a nearby system when with Warp or Wormhole you could just jump directly there. There's no reason to use Hyperlane unless you're playing a Hyperlane only game.
Warp has a long wind-up/wind-down period, which in itself wouldn't be so bad if it didn't also have a relatively small starter range and a slow transit time. Wind-up + transit + wind-down adds up, making Warp very slow. But it's still loads better than Hyperlane because it gives you freedom of movement.
Wormhole is boss because its two major drawbacks (needing a wormhole station to jump/taking longer to jump with larger fleets) are easily handled. If you can deal with sending your construction ships to develop the infrasctructure you can easily cover a major portion of the galaxy without even leaving your empire's borders. And the increasing wind-up speed due to fleet size can be dealt with by splitting up your fleets instead of trying to drab the deathball through the galaxy all at once.
>>176238289
This. Maybe I'm just bad but synthetic evolution feels terrible unless 99% of your planets are managed by sectors, since you have to build every single pop and it takes forever to do. I really liked the idea of synthetic evolution but I typically stop at cyborgs or go one of the other two paths.
synthetic evolution isnt worth a permanent civic imo

>>176238457
Thanks, dude.
>>176239441
Didn't they say in a stream that both related ascendance perks will increase the construction rate of robots/droids/synths, as well as making them less expensive?
I'm hoping for a pretty significant bonus, like a +25% increase each time, so that by the time you're fully synthetic it only takes you half as long to construct new synths.
>>176239664
tbqh I don't watch the streams. If it isn't in print somewhere, I haven't heard about it. That would be very nice though, if that's the case.

They will , i had two big vassal revolt wars in my last game that ended with a domination victory
once their catch up with research and IF you loose most of your fleet the negative " relative power of empires " will reach 100 or more
then they'll declare war as a coalition , I had to put 3 fortresses over each spaceport of all my vassals to win them
this happened many times as with ISB mod fallen empires start with multiple 100k + fleets and I was doing suicidal attempts every 10 years to wear them down , the revolt wars happened in between

I think they're just adding Displace Purge option to Hive Minds. You know, the normal purge options:
>Extermination (kill everyone ASAP)
>Neutering (species slowly dies out due to natural causes)
>Forced Labor (worked to death while producing extra food and minerals)
>Processing (the species are eaten for massive food bonus)
>Displacement (species is forced to migrate to other empires)
Hive Minds as of now can only Process (eat) foreign species, incurring heavy diplomatic malus from genocide. The new patch is giving Displacement option to them as well.
As for "Abandon Planet" type of wargoal, I think all xenophobes get access to Cleanse Planet wargoal. It depopulates the planet and takes it out of the target empire's control. It's kind of shit though as they can just instantly recolonize it without any sort of penalty (and you can't retake it due to 10 year truce), meaning you have to have colony ship at the ready to take it ASAP + you have to make sure the decolonized planet doesn't still fall under the target empire's borders due to other planets or frontier outposts.

Is there actually any 4X game that comes even remotely close to the story-telling, atmosphere and world building of SMAC?

Endless Legend has actual quests. Each faction has their own longer main quest that unlocks new unique tech or other stuff that enhances their specific playstyle even more and there's also side quests that trigger from searching ruins, random global events or stuff like integrating a certain minor faction into your empire. Finishing the faction quest makes victory Wonder buildable, and also unlocks the common Quest victory type and finishing it can win you the game as well. ES2 supposedly continues EL's style and also has both faction and side quests.
If you really want to get all the lore, the series forms one chronological story continuity:
Dungeon of the Endless (roguelite tower defense) > Endless Legend (grid-based 4X) > Endless Space 2 (turn-based space 4X)
Endless Space 1 is getting retconned by ES2.
>>176250779
They should also allow you to genemod cybernetics onto a species, if you've gone the cyborg route tbqh.
>>176250278
I just some more engagement, it seems all we get is nowadays is walls of text for stuff that doesn't try to engage the player to think about it accompanied by some generic piece of concept art that they had lying around.
At best we get sometimes forgettable quotes spoken by a single unmotivated person for technologies.
Where are sound bits that accompany you through your advancements at every step?
Where are the movies for large projects? At least for the end of the game.
It seems it all got thrown out the window in the early 2000s.

I'm not sure about causing exclusively certain factions to spawn; but, you can force spawn custom factions, so I can't imagine something like what you're saying is impossible. My empires are almost always human and there's pretty often another human empire in game.
I'm relatively new to the game though and don't deal with any non-cosmetic mods.

They didn't, because the portal is interdimensional by nature. It connects to an alternate dimension, not an alternate galaxy. Also the Unbidden are already waging their own war against the Abberant and the Vehement, and the Prethoryn have been battling the Hunters for 'eons'.

>thrifty, talented, quick learners (if not conservative / earthbound), erudite
hopefully mixing the scientist and energy pops will mean that they are the dominant race. i'm not sure if thats the big question the game asks before arranging the species leader pool. worst case scenario i'll just nerve staple the labourers and limit leader rights.
>>176280631

tl;dr: Unbidden portals are like gigantic wormhole stations through other dimensions
>>176280680

You're saying it yourself, the Unbidden portals don't connect galaxies, they connect dimensions. The portal itself is created using Jump Drives, which send ships through other dimensions. Just clear out the systems one by one, killing off their individual fleets. Then when it comes time to charge the portal they'll have no reinforcements left to swarm you with.

Alphamod adds several layers of autsim and twreaking to the game, so the answer to your question requires a lot of reflection and self awareness. It makes up for the midgame by breaking things up into more incremental stages as far as tech and development go. so, if you think that's what the game is missing , more stuff to fiddle with, then that mod will give you a lot of mileage.
It doesn't fix the core issues with stellaris. But it gives you a lot more switches and buttons to flick and toggle.
It's me playing federation wrong or it's a very boring way to play stellaris?

Doesn't seem likely because the Unbidden themselves act as if this is their first time breaching into our universe, with their whole "At last, new feeding grounds" schtick.
It wouldn't be new if it was the same dimension they'd invaded previously (And they likely wouldn't need to chase the Prethoryn across the void between galaxies, either, as they're only consuming our dimension to fuel their war at home for the Eternal Throne).
The Hunters are something else, fampai. Probably another End Game crisis they may introduce in DLC.
>>176287367

"New feeding grounds" could just as easily refer to a fresh galaxy as a fresh universe tho.
I'm with Occam's Razor on this one. If you've got a bunch of galaxy consuming hunters (the Unbidden) and someone third party starts talking to you about a bunch of galaxy-consumijg hunters, it's probably the same thing.

* (UTOPIA) It is now possible to find and repair ruined Megastructures in the galaxy
###################
# Features
###################
* Possible to repair ruined Ringworlds with the Mega-Engineering technology
* Reworked the empire diplomacy rooms into a set of 16 different rooms themed around AI personalities that can be freely chosen between when designing an empire
* Replaced Growth Time modifier effect with Growth Speed and rebalanced related values
* Added the ability to drain sector resource stockpiles, giving you 75% of their stockpiled resources at the cost of 100 influence. The cost is reduced to 25 influence during defensive wars
* It is now possible to terraform inhabited planets if you have researched the new Ecological Adaptation tech
* You can now set taxes for Energy Credits and Minerals on sectors separately
* Ironman autosaving is now quarterly instead of monthly
>>176293385
It's not bottom of the barrel, but it's not very good either.
Is there a better mod to make Sol bigger/better than Sol System Expanded?
>* Properly completing the Enigmatic Fortress event chain now yields a random Enigmatic technology rather than all of them
>* Symbol of Unity building and related technology have been removed from the game
>* Paradise Dome building effect on happiness reduced from +10% to +5%
>* Extradimensionals now turn planets barren after destroying colonies

They're the previous generation of empires.
Started like you do, small, grew large and strong, waged war and diplomacy, etc.
Then some unspecified disaster happened, some kind of crisis bad enough that almost all empires got wiped out, and the survivors were so shell shocked that they just stopped.
But yeah, they were big once, and then weren't. A fallen empire.
If you want you can speculate what happened to them.
Maybe the keepers of knowledge had an AI rebellion and barely survived it.
Maybe the holy guardians know some terrible piece of history about those Gaia worlds that they'll fight anyone trying to touch them.
Did they save them from some calamity? Reclaim them from the tomb worlds that were their former friends? Built them after the crisis to clean up something?
And the militant isolationists, they probably saw the entire galaxy go up in flames through the ignorance or stupidity of other races. Saw stuff that put them off expanding or talking with others forever.

I'm re-building my fleet, since half of it got destroyed in the first battle.
I have a few thousands of minerals and make +250 per month, but I don't think that will be enough.
I'm ok with energy thou, I have 16 k in the bank. So at least I can build robot armies without much problem.
The real problem is that I have 7 planets. With one of them being recently colonized and another one full of research stations. He has 19 fucking planets.
So yeah, fucked beyond salvation.

Have you tried spinning?
That's a good trick.

Just minerals.
>start as UNE
>reform it into a Dictatorship
>eventually go full Imperial
Is there a better feel turning democratic xenophiles into a Galactic Empire? Starting as an Empire is boring.

Thanks, most of mine are more silly then serious.

i added this line in
should this work?

guess so

Go defensive, wait for him to attack one of your planets that has a station and then warp in to intercept his fleet once the battle begins. If you have around the same fleet power you'll slaughter him.

Actually, why the fuck is minerals?
Why not change food to "goods" and use that?

Living in the stone age, grandpa?
Is the Deviant trait worth taking now? -15% Governing Ethics attraction doesn't seem to be that bad.
Likewise, Fleeting seems pretty good as well, given that the -10 years for leaders gets undone with the first gene therapy tech.

Theres plenty of techs and an ascension perk that increase your border range.
But your can get supremacy anyways, because spamming unity is easy, with hypercom forums, energy hubs and your main building.

Wew, thank you anon. It worked.
I gathered my forces, waited, and when he tried to attack my weakest planet I managed to kick his ass.
We then played cat and mouse around my control zone, which sucks, but I managed to defeat the remnants of his armies.
He then asked for peace, without demanding anything.
Have to say, I'm really surprised. I ''won'', although at a big cost. A new faction emerged, demanding peace, which is nice, is what I want too, but they also want isolationism, which is a big no-no.
I wanted to make a pacifist empire, but I guess I'll have to focus on war now.

maybe they sold something,
