i recommend not touching the older versions of my mods and the necromorph one as they can be buggy.

Also my dwarf fortress crashed after i had gone trough over 100 books (probably more) from a necromancer tower to get the ones that actually have the secrets of life and death to bring to my fort(s).

I recommend starting out in /tg/station if you ever decide to try out the game. /vg/station is full of elitist namefags (the other people there are cool though) and the server has less people maintaining the codebase whereas /tg/station keeps getting updates almost daily by multiple people.

Please explain this. I'd expect all the little corner-y bits to be wasted space, whereas rectanglular rooms can interlock nicely
>>
>>176171618
Underground pools of water exist, but nothing like the flowing aboveground rivers. Chasms are gone, but occasionally you'll have vertical passages that cut through multiple cavern levels, or magma pipes as high as the first cavern level stretching all the way down to the magma sea, regardless of volcanoes in the area.

So make regular kobolds more deadly and larger? Got it. I wonder what kind of effect this will have when kobold populations can defend themselves against something bigger than a cat.

Speaking of kobolds i saw my very first kobold necromancer. I have no idea how thats even possible but the thought of such a small thing commanding huge armies of undead amuses me.

A couple of questions.
Context:I built the floodgates during winter. I channeled through two layers of ice and built it on the edge of where i thought the water was flowing off of.
I thought this was a waterfall, but there is no mist. So is it just running down a slope into the two other smaller streams?

I have queued up several times to link the floodgates to the lever. My dwarves respond with cannot access site. They built the floors fine and the lever, only thing that changed during that time are the merchants arriving.

Are floodgates constructed closed? If so there seems to be water still flowing through my floodgates. Shouldn't the water eventually drain off the map?

If you saw them on embark then they're there, you can't really change entity_default after making a world, and the gobs will show up on the civs screen after they attack once.

Thanks for taking on my big kobolds idea. I've tried modding in the past but it seems like the layers of RAWs knowledge required can get pretty complex very quickly, even with other peoples' work for reference.

Toady is going to have to really start working on performance. So much shit is getting added that adds depth to the game that pretty soon you're not going to be able to experience everything before your fortress simply shits itself from fps death.

>>
>>176183473
What texture pack?
>>
>>176184662
yes, they're constructed closed.
also, in order to link gates to a lever you need to have walkable space adjacent on the same z-level.

dig or build a staircase, and then put any walkable surface in front of the floodgates

or wait until winter and then excavate ice and connect them again.
>>
I really hope Toady implements some really unique and powerful magical artifacts. I'd love to have a large shield artifact in the middle of my fortress which can be projected around an area for defense, or even a holy artifact for use in evil areas to keep various evil creatures and syndromes at bay.

Whats the big difference between shields and bucklers defensively?

Are shields just better or is it situational
>>
>>176194817
Shields block better. Bucklers are lighter. Almost never a reason to use bucklers except for flavor.
>>
>>176194817
Huh, I never checked much beyond the block rate tag being lower and bashworthiness being lower for bucklers.
>>
>>176195213
There was a science thread on bay12 some years ago. The conclusion was that shields had a small but significant block chance over bucklers (can't remember the %) and that adding shields increased block chance slightly for each additional shield, with sharply diminishing returns (can't remember those numbers either). I would find the thread for you but I don't want to.

All I want in dwarf fort is an bug race with four castes that plays like dwarves in fortmod.
Castes of corse would be queen only female that can breed gives live birth she would be big and slow with some starting skill in nobility abilitys.
Drone starting skills in labor tasks and they would be fast but weak and the most common non breeding females
Soldier caste would be the males second most common they would have natural armor and scorpion tails that paralize.
Last would be scouts non breeding fliers that are basically drones with wings.
>>
>>176197836
desu the scouts should be the ones that go out and start colonies
for example look at termites.
they send out so many winged scouts to try and find suitable ground for a queen to start a new colony.
>>
You know, now that I think of it, if you take the size of a tile in DF into consideration, a 2x1 tiles room is pretty fucking spacious.

While I agree with the main sentiment in your post, you seem to have gotten the dimensions wrong.

Each square is 2x2 meters wide (and 3 meters high). So your noble rooms would be 10x10 meters.

Still larger than the average flat, though.

Nope, I'm pretty sure if you just disable the mining labour (woodcutter is also fucky) then they can equip picks just as easily as any other weapon.
So just train them up carving out your halls and once they hit legendary have them be constantly in your military.

Hey guys, new to /dfg/!
Though I've played dwarf fortress for a year or so.

Wanted to ask a few questions:

--
Favorite part of dwarf fortress?

Average time spent playing in a session?

Best memory?

Worst mistake?

--

Thanks!
>>

>Favorite part of dwarf fortress?
It is the comfiest game in the whole wide world. Even when fps slows down, I listen to music, open a /dfg/ tab, and mess around with other projects while checking on my dorfs every 10 minutes and make sure everything is running smoothly.
>Average time spent playing in a session?
I don't have df sessions that often, but they always last hours and hours until I force myself to get off.
>Best memory?
Running the 2nd tourney
>Worst mistake?
Flooded an early fort with magma and water simultaneously.
>>
>>176170250
implement shitting? (designated shitting streets)
if your dwarves poo in the water they drink or the water is contaminated in some other way. dwarves can get Cholera if they drink from it.

having half your population die to a Cholera outbreak would be epic (diseases in general would be cool)
>>
>>176212332

It doesn't happen as often as it used to, but it was a minor meme for a while to have random livestock save the fort from megabeasts or whatever. The Fortress Chasmserpent has begun construction. The goal is to build a huge fortress over a volcano with an open-sky colosseum right at the bottom. There are absolutely no overground water sources so im a little worried about how we are going to treat our injured but perhaps we can find some in the underground caverns?
Going to have to build a small wooden bridge for now to get to the other side of the chasm, later there will be a beautiful bridge that can be retracted to fling any possible siegers to their deaths.

Yeah, it was a cave-in, that's my magma piston's collection reservoir. The dust is always fire clay + layer stone, though, and the piston doesn't pass through any obsidian layers. There are a few z of obsidian at the top from repairs which is probably the origin, but I haven't seen persistent cave-in dust as a magma contaminant before this drop.

It's the natural effect if you have a lot of wood/stones, as well as a lot of stockpile space.

If you want them to haul less, you should just make smaller stockpiles. Or you could deactivate the hauling labour for some dorfs, but that would just increase the load on the others.

there is no "cheating" in DF, since the game isn't performance based.

there are however, practices that can make the game less enjoyable, i.e. pussying out of sieges using drawbridges and traps.

it's all about how you want to get yor enjoyment out of the game. most people in the general probably start out as demigods. even then, you'll start out weaker than most civilised enemies.

Then I went in there, took Teme from the coffin and put the body in my backpack. Obviously the defenses will need to be improved.

Let's talk about fortress design.

Do you build your fortress with some bigger plan in mind since the very beginning, or just let it grow naturally?
Performance optimal, or aesthetic?
Flat designs or 3D designs?
What do you think about neat, regular rooms and corridors? Do you let your OCD autism flow or do you keep fortress irregular and organic?
Do you spend a lot of time and resources on decorating the fortress, or just care about it being functional?
Do you build aboveground structures?
Are your designs ridiculously gigantomaniac? Like 7 tiles wide corridor with columns when two tiles are more than enough?
Do you let terrain features decide the shape of your fortress, or force your own vision?
Do you separate industries or keep everything mixed?
Do you keep your resources separated and organized (e.g. separate stockpiles for various metals) or just use few huge stockpiles for everything?
Are there some things you absolutely refuse to do in your fortress or do every single time?
Do you use "reveal" and "prospect" commands?

1/2
>Do you build your fortress with some bigger plan in mind since the very beginning, or just let it grow naturally?
A healthy combination of both. I usually start out with a plan, but depending on changing circumstances, I can make adjustments. OR, I'll just abandon part of the fort and let it become part of the caverns, as I continue building somewhere else on the embark.
>Performance optimal, or aesthetic?
Aesthetic
>Flat designs or 3D designs?
3D all the way.
>What do you think about neat, regular rooms and corridors? Do you let your OCD autism flow or do you keep fortress irregular and organic?
Depends on the circumstances. Sometimes I go for rectangular designs, sometimes circular ones.
>Do you spend a lot of time and resources on decorating the fortress, or just care about it being functional?
The former.
>Do you build aboveground structures?
Yes. Whether or not the bulk of the fort is underground or not depends on the individual fort, though.
>Are your designs ridiculously gigantomaniac? Like 7 tiles wide corridor with columns when two tiles are more than enough?
The over-arching plan is usually gigantic, with wide streets and huge halls lined with tall pillars. The individual rooms are pretty humble, though. I never give ordinary dorfs more than 2x2 for their bedrooms.
>Do you let terrain features decide the shape of your fortress, or force your own vision?
A combination of both.
>Do you separate industries or keep everything mixed?
The former.
>Do you keep your resources separated and organized (e.g. separate stockpiles for various metals) or just use few huge stockpiles for everything?
Neither. I usually have rather small stockpiles for everything. Most goods stay in their respective workshop. I usually place related workshops close to one another, so this is a good way to eliminate unnecessary hauling labour.
>>
>>176292093
>Do you build your fortress with some bigger plan in mind since the very beginning, or just let it grow naturally?
Before embarking I already have the fort more or less planned out, possibly done a few throwaway test forts to try out some designs.
The construction usually takes a while, and in the meantime the dwarves live in a temporary fort, which might be used later on.
>Flat or 3D?
>regular OCD or irregular and organic?\
>aboveground structures?
>gigantomaniac?
>terrain decides the shape or force your own vision?
all depends on the design of the fortress, I'm not excluding anything on princple.

>Do you spend a lot of time and resources on decorating the fortress, or just care about it being functional?
decorating as in engraving? Not really, but using specific material/colors to create patterns, definitely.

>Do you separate industries or keep everything mixed?
>Do you keep your resources separated and organized (e.g. separate stockpiles for various metals) or just use few huge stockpiles for everything?
I take great pleasure in optimizing industry layout and planning shit out.

>Are there some things you absolutely refuse to do in your fortress or do every single time?
>Do you use "reveal" and "prospect" commands?
Haven't used them in a looong time. but I do sometimes scout out locations with adventurers, or decide "this is a great spot for a fortress" while I'm adventuring.
>>
>>176292860
2/2
>Are there some things you absolutely refuse to do in your fortress or do every single time?
Drawbridges that isolate me from the surface. I'm okay with using drawbridges to close and open certain paths into the fort, but not hiding behind drawbridges entirely.
>Do you use "reveal" and "prospect" commands?
No. Never. They're part of a min-maxing playstyle that removes all fun in my book. I prefer having to adjust to new circumstances. That makes for more unique and interesting forts.
>>
Keas are so cool.
They don't steal things at all, cause they're such nice guys.
All they do is fly around and be badass.
They're much cooler than those stupid other birds.

>>
>>176295727
>All they do is fly around and be badass.
badass enough to scare away dozens of dwarves and prevent them from doing their job for weeks
>>
>>176295802
That's because of the fact that dwarves have been indoctrinated to think that keas are a bad omen, when clearly they should be letting us- I mean them near their anvils.
>>
>>176292093
>What do you think about neat, regular rooms and corridors? Do you let your OCD autism flow or do you keep fortress irregular and organic?

I'm actually making myself stick to a strict grid as a way of keeping my 'tism in check. Otherwise I'd be endlessly agonizing over whether or not each individual tile of stone to be dug out were absolutely optimal.

>Do you build your fortress with some bigger plan in mind since the very beginning, or just let it grow naturally?
Since I prefer savage embarks, friendly neighborhood usually forces me to get my shit together quickly. If terrain is flat and forested, I just quickly build an improvised wooden castle. Otherwise, I dig out a cheap, purely functional fort.
Once I have a secured, self-sufficient lodgment, I start building the main fortress, that usually follows some grand design.
>Performance optimal, or aesthetic?
Mix of both. Working areas are kept optimal, while living areas are eye-candy.
>Flat designs or 3D designs?
3D.
>What do you think about neat, regular rooms and corridors? Do you let your OCD autism flow or do you keep fortress irregular and organic?
Usually I end up with regular ones.
>Do you spend a lot of time and resources on decorating the fortress, or just care about it being functional?
You could buy a kingdom with my average fortress. Statues, golden/silver/steel furniture, engravings. In old forts even pleb dorfs have engraved 3x3 rooms with high-quality metal furniture.
>Do you build aboveground structures?
Almost always I end up with castles and paved roads. Surprisingly, even more so if terrain is uneven. I love forts sticking out of the mountains and viaducts crossing valleys.
>Are your designs ridiculously gigantomaniac? Like 7 tiles wide corridor with columns when two tiles are more than enough?
They often end up that way.
>Do you let terrain features decide the shape of your fortress, or force your own vision?
Above ground I usually adjust to the terrain. Below I'm the boss.
A few times I turned an entire water-filled cave into obsidian because it was in my way.
>>
>>176298236
>Do you separate industries or keep everything mixed?
Neatly separated. When I'm in mood, I create even separate living areas for workers.
>Do you keep your resources separated and organized (e.g. separate stockpiles for various metals) or just use few huge stockpiles for everything?
Stockpile autism. Every intermediate product gets a separate one. Various metals, stones, finished goods separated. I tend to even build a separate mini-industry for every metal I process, with dedicated smelters and forges. Stone is organized by color and properties, and each stockpile is linked to a separate mason's workshop.
>Are there some things you absolutely refuse to do in your fortress or do every single time?
Well, some design patters keep repeating in various fortresses, like double sluice trade depot or main stairwell. I also never build rooms in soil unless it's a farm or pasture and avoid stuff like supporting entire tower with a single soap bar.
>Do you use "reveal" and "prospect" commands?
Sometimes. Depends on a goal I have in mind.

Tantrum spirals are gone for good, though? Dwarf feelings are not that important anymore. I've had a few gatherers driven to melancholy and starving themselves to death by a corpse pit they passed by regularly over a span of several years, their significant others were sad about that, but nothing beyond that. Big fucking deal.

He's a bay12 guy who "made" Masterwork df, a popular modpack. He essentially compiled all the most popular mods, added a few minor tweaks and a launcher, and then started a patreon in order to be rewarded by the community for his hard work.

Some people dislike him because he's already set for life thanks to his parents giving him a set of flats to rent out, and he's sponsored to ride all over the world on his bicycle and do stuff.

He also posts on reddit!

>*Something has collapsed*

Long time ago I decided to make use of my flat terrain and deep soil to create an underground tree farm. I extended my main stairwell upwards and dug out three huge squares (much bigger than in pic rel) one above the other. It wasn't the smartest approach, since now I had to deal with channeling two gigantic floors while keeping my miners from committing a suicide.
Then I had an absolutely ingenious idea - why not just collapse all that shit?

A few frames later my entire fortress was a 15 z-levels tall cross-shaped pit full of dust and corpses. This was by far the fastest accidental genocide of entire fortress I have ever achieved.

It's not like there's a piece of code that says
>if volcano then no iron
but iron is usually found in sedimentary layers (except hematite which you can also find in igneous extrusive layers), but never in metamorphic layers.

So you would need an embark that has a volcano but ALSO contains another biome or layer or whatever where you can find iron.

Who said it's sophisticated? The current depth and the potential of the DF combat system far exceeds the Rimworld combat.

Another one! And this one has six supports.

It appears that the supports appear in pairs, and always have five tiles between each other (the pairs, that is). The pairs, in turn, are so far always nine tiles away from one another.

I guess the width of each of those pairs of supports (seven tiles) means that the river must have a certain width for them to become relevant.

Interestingly, in Toady's screenshots, it was four spacs between the supports in each pair, and five tiles between the pairs themselves. I guess he decided to tweak it.

And the third bridge with supports follow the same pattern (five tiles between the supports in each pair, nine tiles between the pairs).

But damn, these bridges are kinda neat. I wish they were more common.

This one is different.

The supports here don't appear in pairs. There are seven of them, and they all have four tiles between them.

It's worth mentioning that while the earlier bridges were in towns and hamlets, this one's in the wilderness, whcih means it's a worldgen bridge.

Zoomed out to show more of it.

Could someone here look over my raws? I made a new civilization and species and whenever I generate a new world where they are supposed to spawn in, they just don't. Like the game runs fine and finishes worldgen and everything without any crashes, but my civ/species doesn't show up as a civ or in adventure mode. I have no idea what could possibly be causing this.

If I remember correctly, every 2x2 embark square has one adamantine vein placed somewhere randomly. Which means that if your embark is at least 3x3, you are guaranteed to have at least one vein, but smaller embarks might have no veins if you are unlucky.

As for finding the veins themselves on the embark site, just dig as deep as you can. They're usually kinda hard to miss.

Modanon here, found the source of your problem.
one of the following tags in your entity file caused the problem.

[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:SUBORDINATE]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:EVIL]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:FLOWERY]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:NEGATIVE]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:UGLY]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:NATURE]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:HOLY]
[CULL_SYMBOL:ALL:PEACE]

Im super tired and accidentally removed the entire entity file as i was testing out which one it was and cant be bothered to download the file again but you can probably do some testing on your own to see which one is causing the crashes. Good luck!

Thanks. I really think DF has a lot of cool stuff like that. Its the same with the Blendecs. Like, they have all the traits of an undead, but aren't mechanically undead, you know? That's really weird and I wanted to expand on it more. And of course Night Trolls are by far one of the most fucked up things in DF so I definitely needed to include them somehow.

Note that the attack there was supposed to represent shit like what 10 Meti does: http://killsixbilliondemons.com/comic/wielder-of-names-6-112/ while also representing the anime style flurry attacks, so it's way overpowered for the vast majority of purposes, but it will sever limbs like a motherfucker.

>>176378826
In 0.34, vampires in positions of power (nobles in keeps) would start their own cults. The keeps would be full of civilians with ordinary jobs. When you accused the vampire, the civilians would all pull out their knives, and it would be a huge deathmatch between you + the guards, vs the vampire + the cultists.

The hearthsperson system in 0.40 fucked that up entirely, though. I really miss those cults.

Also, back then, the keeps were divided into several rooms (using the same generation code as the other dungeons), so the combat would be split up over several floors and rooms. You'd fight your way through the entire keep, while seeing dozens of cultists with knives overpower the guards. Even for an experienced adventurer, getting out of the keep alive would be a bit of achallenge.

The weird thing is, these are ALL normal houses.

Usually, hamlets are 90% cottages, which differ from ordinary houses in that they have gardens and don't have any furniture. Usually, I only see one or two ordinary houses in hamlets.

Another difference between cottages and houses is that houses can have multiple rooms, while cottages always have a single room.

If this actually bothers you, maybe you're just not a DF kinda person.

Plus, if you've got your burrows properly designated, your civilians should avoid combat, meaning that the amount of viable bite victims should be minimal.

yeah base skill aptitude is based on attributes.
>>
>>176395118
>Is there any skill crossover?
No skill affects the use of any other skill.

Every skill has attributes associated with them that are used and trained when the skill is used, so a legendary dwarf will likely (but not necessarily) have some high attributes associated with their legendary skill.
