Anything that targets MR and isn't single target.

Even with Antimagic (which they're quite sure to have) they'll fail their checks most of the time even for easily resists stuff, if you have any pene boosters. Curse of Stones already should give you a lot of time to hack them to pieces, as long as you have enough shit that won't just explode on the BV.
(Wind of Death / Beast Mastery is obv better but I take it you don't have that)

For getting to their mages, Howl can be great. Though it doesn't do too much against the piggies in itself.

It does, but N9 isn't a good bless for either ozelotl or jags. They don't have the survivability to make good use of the regen N9 gives.

F9 has a number of qualities which make it a lot more desirable for Mictlan than it typically is.

First, their sacreds are very disposable. Most nations like to invest into defenses for their sacreds at least a bit, because losing limited cap-only sacreds in every fight means you run out quick. Mictlan has no such trouble, and can build full blender bless on their jaguars.

Second, F9 is quite a strong bless earlygame. It falls off later into the game quite heavily, but at midgame you'll be moving primarily into Tlahuelpuchi (which don't need a bless to work great). Your bless should be primarily geared for coming out of earlygame in a good position.

Third, jaguars have a large number of low-damage attacks. Many weak attacks is the ideal situation to take a F9 bless. Flagellants like a similar bless, at least in summod where you can mass them.

Magic 3 means you hit those vital research goals faster, and means your research isn't hurt as much by having tons of mages out blood hunting.

In terms of numbers, Magic 3 gives 43% more RP compared to 15% more gold from Order 3. RP is obviously less valuable than gold, but that's a massive increase you're missing out on.

Ulm's 'fix' is actually a pretty significant buff, as it not only doubles the chance of any given path off the 10% but gives a chance at 2 10% proccing
Tnn/eriu is shit because of the gem types and the terrible power/gem you're getting, other than that it isn't bad
That's way to much of a nerf on ozzies and bats need siege strength reduced not just hp

Ulm buff does next to nothing to fix the nation, it only slightly buffs their cap only mage.

Elf buff is pure meme. Tuathas arent even very good.

The combat nerf to Xib/Mic demons isnt a real issue for those nations too.

Overall very slight and cosmetic changes not changing the power balance at all.

This is bullshit. At temp scale 2, you're going to spend almost half a year at cold/heat3 anyway. The difference in income between temp1 and temp2 is actually larger than between temp2 and temp3, since the latter can't go higher than the maximum of temp3 in any season.

Hey Admin any luck on that Machaka sub? Looks like everyone else has their turn in so we could go ahead and just set them AI if there aren't any takers.

And for anyone interested in subbing, Machaka is in a disadvantaged position but by certainly no means dead. They got elfed by yours truly and started to stale, but they still have 3 forts and their capital (3/4 are being sieged by me however). But I'm now fighting 3 other nations off so you'd be fighting a skeleton crew on my part and have allies.

Also you'd have a Neteret of Many Names awake in your capital, which I'm assuming is Rainbow'd/SC paths out judging by the fact that he wasn't bothering to bless his sacreds. I'm also guessing that the pretender has some paths to be a ready made SC by the fact that he's been focusing his research in alteration. He had alt 5 before he staled so i'm guessing he hit alt 6. So even if he went full rainbow you have a turn 30 titan that can cast Body ethereal/mistform/temper flesh/liquid body/stone skin or iron skin and possibly soul vortex with a death gem.

i had partially-anonymous game where the admin sperged out turn 1 and told everyone he was going to sub out or turn AI anyone at the second stale.
After i staled once for IRL reasons i tought it was going to be bad. and it was bad, i even had nightmares and woke up at 5 AM because i wasn't sure if i had done my turn, but in the end we finished the game with an average of less than 24 h/turn and no chainstaler/AI giving a free capital to anyone.

the next game, with a different admin, i started near a chainstaler and a guy who went AI as soon as he lost his expander god at turn 15.

There's actually nothing wrong with having 25 provs per head. At least if it isn't a 15-player game.

People try the most ridiculous game settings, mods and build all the time, but somehow have the set in stone idea that you always must do it with 15 provs a head no matter what.

All it means is that it'll be a tad harder / rarer to rush people dead right out the gate.

However, I think there's another problem: it makes early expansion disproportionately stronger. Depending on map architecture, EA Vanheim, EA/MA Pangaea and EA Xibalba for example can in principle expand 50 provinces on an empty map during the first year. In standard games they hit other expanding players and are limited in size that way, but in 25 provinces per player game they might take 25 of their provinces and 10 provinces from each of their neighbours natural territory (15 provinces during the first year is respectable enough) and I don't think that degree of asymmetry is good for the game.

Hard to say on Aurora, but I'm tentatively gonna give it to Aurora on that one. I don't remember Distant Worlds being all that autistic. RTW's another iffy one. That's extreme theorycrafting, try in practice to reach that kind of province count after expansion. Even if you could get there with a Awake Monster Xibalba, you wouldn't have enough troops to defend all that when all your neighbors see you've taken "their" lands that fast.

Certainly the early game's different and you should put more emphasis into good expansion. But it's not intrinsically imbalanced any more than someone getting an easy 2nd cap in another game can be.

Bless isn't that useful if you don't have great sacreds. In fact, I'd even say bless is a cheesy tactic, focusing on getting a very good expansion phase and then becoming useless quickly. On the other hand, mages are everything in this game. Scales = money and money = mages. Therefore, in doubt, always choose scales over bless.

The latter part is still correct, that you can get an unpunished early advantage in any game.

And really only Xibalba is capable of really reaching monster expansion on a bigger map, others can't expand too much faster than usual since their troops must walk from the cap to a border first before taking provinces, Xib can just recruit out of woods & fly to wherever.

And Xib being strong is obviously a constant regardless of game type.

Best way to test hypotheses about what's good on a bigger (per player) map is to play a few games. And can't take a single game as definitive proof of much.

N9 is usually going to be better than equivalent scales in lategame. W9 is usually not going to be better.

I would argue that dominions is a different level of autism than DF. In DF, having mechanical knowledge of the building design is challenging, thus forcing the player to either stay a stupid norme or achieve new levels of autism. Erathia seems pretty weak. You expand well and raid well because you have 35g 1r, 40+ HP, 13 Attack, flying, 16 Str. griffins, but griffins are bad in normal armies because they're size 5. So you have to use your resource heavy humans instead, but most of them are merely average, even the summons that also have upkeep (except the griffins but they're still size 5). This wouldn't be an issue if you had good mages, but your battlemages are a 3-random elementalist, an S1H2, an S2H3, and an A2H1, and your only reliable source of A3 is a 265g cap-only.

You end up playing like a combination of MA Man and MA Marignon; heavy armor, powerful but limited sacreds, and cap-dependent evocations.

OK them my review.

Cap only mage is trash. 4 path mage as a cap only is laughable. It gets A3 tho so theres that. Not StR either but still.

Initiates are your generic S1 for 90g, not best deal but they're also priests. Masters seem too expensive to use most of the time but their H3 and inquisitor can come in handy.

Elementalists and zealots seem like your bread and butter mages. Sacred A2 for 150g is a great deal for t-strikers, being priests on top is a waste tho. Still thats a better deal than elves and birds get upkeep wise. Elementalists open up loads of magic combinations and grant you elemental mastery with magma, acid and RoS. Also a decent enough mage, comparable to Ulm smiths but more random. Anyway the nation has really solid combat mages.

Cap only sacred looks like a massive tank and a great damage dealer. Would rape giants. Since you have a lot of sacred mages N9Ex seems like an obvious bless. With that bless those guys will shred indies. They lack mobility tho.

55g berserker griffins are quite awesome too. Can be buffed with your native magic AND they are disciplined AND they have three attacks each. Sure, the attack density is so-so but its still a great unit. You will likely end up using the cheaper version, but thats also fine.

Cavalier is trash, not even a hoof attack. Crusader is an elite super heavy infantry with reasonable gold cost and huge res cost. But again, how many units have 21 prot in MA? You also get cheap xbows, pikes and halberds, those are usually LA nation troops. I'd say very solid troop line with guaranteed raiding, flaming/guided xbows and super heavies.

Summoned battle griffins are zhayedan-mount tier. 5+ for E2 and 8E gems, thats very massable. Ardent Crusaders are an easy way of conversion from S gems into elite heavy infantry. Certainly usable.

Summoned angels are only ok because their magic is meh. Not really worth the cost since you are covered for flying troops already.

no, I mean, the game doesn't roll good and bad events separately. You have a chance of an event, then there's a sliding scale from uncommon bad to uncommon good that determines what kind of event you get. Luck shifts it one way or the other, so misfortune 3 means that all of your events are worse (in your dom).

If you care only about income and not the missing gem events and sosuch, it's still better to run less luck and less order, since misfortune gives you -income events regularly,which are permanent and stack.

I guess for free meatshields they're practically interchangeable with longdead, but the spell itself is severely limited: you need to be casting it instead of Astral spells, it only works if there are already dead people around(if there aren't any the priest casts something else), and you need to communion or recruit the 215g S2H3s for it. It might be nice as a little trick at the end of the script, but it will never equal true skelespam.

Elemental cross paths are good even at 1. F1W1 gets the acid party started (though you need a booster or gems in combat), E1F1 gets magma bolts which are ok, maybe EWA would be less good but you can shoot for rain of stones or rust mist. E boots are a pretty accessible booster, which helps. W bracelet is deep in Const, F takes F4 or FD, A takes A4, but E is not that bad. And you can use Fire in a Jar to phoenix power up every battle.

There's no way to counter him without getting your expansion screwed.

Best bet, imo, is to recruit indie commanders from adjacent provinces and have them patrol on cap with cheap units.

Asshole batman doesn't go very well in a direct fight, and he can only assassinate one commander per turn.

If I had managed to get my R'lyeh pretender in, it was going to be a dom10, E4 snake with actually half-decent scales. The strat was to spam grandmothers out of the cap and regular mothers if I could claim the one or two empty water provinces and straight up dom kill the other W nations. If I started coastal, I'd also expand onto land and build a merman priest to put temples down. The swarms of freespawn would ensure that my cap can't be breached if anyone tries to stop the domkill, and also makes sieging down domkilled enemy forts that much quicker. Since the scales are decent, I'd actually be able to leverage the extra caps to catch up on research.

Imps are underpriced: 13 gold for a size 2 with above average HP, MR, Str. and AP, with fire resistance, two melee attacks, and a magical ranged attack. Maybe being banishable mitigates it somewhat, but I doubt it. Then again, Revelers are 13 gold too.

Hell Razers are way overpriced: you're paying 7 gold extra for an objectively worse Imp.

Pain Elementals are overpriced; they need to spend 84 turns in battle before they break even for Lost Souls/bloodslaves, and Lost Souls aren't even good so spawning one per battle-turn is nothing.

Call Lost Souls is garbage; you get Summon Imps at the same research level, and while you get 2 fewer Imps than Lost Souls, Imps are much, much better.

The multiheros are weird; they can't thug any better than what you can recruit, and they don't have any other special qualities except 0 upkeep.

Maybe it's because they cost bloodslaves, but the summons are surprisingly good. National summons for your mods tend to not be worth the gems, but this time they're great; Cacodemons, Vulgars, Revenants, etc. are all worth summoning.

Any reason the undead and demons have such high encumbrance? There are a total of 8 vanilla undead units that have >0 encumbrance, and demons tend to have 1-2 encumbrance. Even the exceptions share commonalities: they have a terrestrial origin (for example, Lanka) as opposed to crawling out of Hell, the Underworld, or some alternate plane.

As for the spellcosts, they are extremely comparable to similar vanilla spells, so I think they're fine.

Really offensive troops, say Revelers, may also be able to manage to munch through hordes before the death mages regain their consciousness and and summon another bunch. Same deal with flyers who might be able to get next to mages in the alpha strike and reduce the number of skeleton spammers (in addition to getting full surround -> a lot of attacks going to the skeletons and possibility of killing them faster than they are summoned).

Obviously this isn't something you'd ever want to do, but if your hand is forced, I have anecdotal evidence showing that elite troops with high attack density can deal with 15 something D2s. And naturally, unless you have access to something like earthquake that can deal with all the skeletons wholesale, troop choices do matter for mopping up and what you usually want are offensive troops that can get through skeletons instead of being bogged down. Lineholders usually aren't a good choice unless they are backed up by battlefield clear.

You get about 13-15 provinces in a test game with ranger spam and proper scripting. You can get a few more if you luck into more tribals and barbs, but those also tend to be lower value provinces. An awake gets you 25-30 in a test game, and more importantly you get many of those provinces sooner. An awake lets you lay down your labs sooner and start the illuminati spam sooner. An awake lets you hit a level 5 research (thaum 1 evo 5 or thaum 5) by turn 14 while also building a second or even third fort in that time frame. This early magic spike makes you very, very difficult to rush. A pure scales build can't do that. I've seen three Ulmish vamp queens, and they all wound up being too small to hold off their neighbors.

Take N9E4 or N9 mono.

Go Conj 5 first for air ele spam against most opponents. Go Conj 2/Evo 5 first against Abysia or Therodos. Once you have one primary battlemagic online, you often want to get the other (to either get smushers for smaller engagements or to have a less gem reliant strat for larger engagements, depending on which you got first). Then you can go Alt/Cons for thugging. Thugs are good for letting you spend nature and water gems on taking provinces. They are not viable against armies without a lot more research, and you want battlefield clear first.

Lategame fomoria has the largest toolkit of any nation except maybe Berytos, with national access to RoS, Wrathful Skies, SCs, and Dance of the Morrigans. It's basically a matter of picking the right spells to beat your enemy's army, and there's essentially nothing that Fomoria can't beat if it has the research and casters available. Fomoria loses when it gets outspread by raiders (which is where having access to N9 thugs helps - it lets you spend your off gem types to retake provinces and trapeze on enemies) and when it wastes resources by using the wrong answer against the enemy's army.

Well, I should honestly get my ass to write a proper guide, but yes I think that imprisoned scales+bless is the easiest Fomoria to play. The other two options are scales+awake (also relatively straightforward) and awake+bless which is harder, because Fomoria's bless is mostly for opening options later on rather than making your sacreds super strong. N9 Unmarked expand well mixed with any size 2 dudes (Fir bolgs are cheapest nationals and have okay stats, Nemedians are nice because then you have more nemedians after expansion to kill other players with, but indies work fine too).

guys, I'm 1000% burned out on Dominions

I've got 2 great sub positions though!

The first: EAChineseNewYears as Pangea. I took an awake W9 dragon and expanded to like 30 provinces and was the biggest nation. I'm in a...sort of 4 way war. Agartha is down to his cap, a fort and one province that he's protecting with some mercs. He's 2 candles away from being domkilled and I've got mondo preachers on his cap. TC tried to SC raid me, but fucked up and he's not done anything since. Fomoria has been doing the best against me, but has taken a rainbow bless. He's been spending a ridiculous amount of gems on Sea Kings. Caelum is AI and is best ally. Sauromatia took a few provinces and is doing nothing. R'lyeh is just sitting in his pond and doing nothing. Income is great, both gold and gems.

The second is JobbingToXibalba: A noob game as Vanheim. Hella bored of this game, since I wasn't able to win with my first few wars so now I'm just building up my forces ad infinitium. I got the soulstone of the wolves from an arena battle that no one else joined in with, so I've got so many fucking wolves. At war with AI Caelum and AI Arco, arco is about to die. Caelum is a bit of a bigger problem, but it IS AI. Abysia is in a pretty good position to win so I'd suggest attacking him at the earliest opportunity. Therodos has been annoying me, but thus far has done nothing aside from blaming his D related shit on me in a poor attempt at diplomancing. Xibalba is around I guess?

Well the game is finally over. This is actually the first game I ever won and to be honest I didn't think I would win this game, a brief thought on the game

Marg: started blank turning was easy food

Man/Bandor log/Johentheim/Man: basically did nothing all game or went AI early. Bandor going AI early meant I was able to take a level 3 throne easily off him

Nazca doesn't really do reverse communions so much as double communions.

Units with Innate Spellcasters will continue casting spells when they are a communion slave. This means that they can be both masters and slaves. This lets them share fatigue and means that each buff spell affects all members of the communion. So 4 S1D2E1H2 mallqui priests become 4 S3D4E3H4 mallqiu priests when communioned up. When one casts Power of the Spheres, all of them become S4D5E4H5. This gets more fun when you add other casters in like Royal Mallqui or just put master matrices on other mages.

Communions boost all paths on all slaves, which was intended to improve their ability to absorb fatigue. Memers figured out pretty quick that you could use communions to mass-boost a swarm of cheap mages to shit budget evocations all over the battlefield with very little investment.

Buffs are also shared across all members of a communion so you can use three or four masters to buff up a goon squad of thuggish slaves and send them into melee.

I was then bordered on all sides by Man and with one province bordering Marignon, then C'tis, and then TC I had no will to fight them. When Man went AI I fought him, which is why I put Mech Militia up, the AI doesn't know how to deal with it, but I got bored of raiding.

So I started doing SP things. Like empowering my rainbow forge lord pretender until he could summon tarts, forge near any booster or artifact, I had geared wraithlords, plenty of wights, a B6 indie Commander with a brazen skull, blood thorn and armour of souls. I had the Djinn that I was using as a RoS SC against Man, which was !!FUN!!. I had fun until I stopped having fun so I went AI, GG Lukas

Dominions actually has extremely thematic mechanics (say, Heart Companions inspired by Sacred Band of Thebes really are gay in-game, seeing as that they are immune to seduction by women), top-notch lore and seeing as that it's based on historical nations and mythology, there's a wealth of source material you might reference in RP.

As far actually playing the game goes in MP, it's not uncommon for people to write diplomatic messages in-character at least from time to time but most players don't limit themselves exclusively thematic choices or anything of the sort. There has been actual RP house rule games too and they've turned out fine, the game is very well-suited for such a thing, but they are rare.
