Slow nioh player here, I just started the 5th zone and I notice I seem to be falling behind with the levels (I'm 90 and the next mission is 96 and levels are starting to take copious amounts of amrita). Am I supposed to grind by now or something?

I fucking loathed The Night Falls Again on NG+.

I find that one pretty alright. The bolts have little health and get stunlocked fairly easily. Bolts also fly all over the place so it isn't too hard to separate the two of them.

Yeah, two tengus at once is pretty hard. On WotS they add in like 6 cannon skeletons at every corner of the map that are a pain to take down. Haven't played it on WotD though.

I was mainly talking about bosses though. An Gasha is such a long fight that is just boring. Smashing its head in twice should have been enough the first time you face him, instead of wasting time trying to bait out his dumb fucking hands.

Fuck for a bit I was thinking this would be impossible but managed to eke it out. The bear spirit summon with the talisman is pretty great if you can land it (though the range is shit).

Gonna try leveling the turtle spirit later. It's magic, so useless, but has the highest damage reduction and I want to see how it goes once upgraded. Would be nice to find a way to stack shitloads of passive defense on this character.

Also, overall is it better to just steamroll through way of the strong to try and get to WotD to get the higher level equipment? I'm surviving fine in WotS so far with lvl 140-150 equipment (and few divines, only +0 and +1 so far), but not on the second half of zones yet.

It's mainly because they punish a single mistake with what can often result in a ko from full health. Other enemies that can also do that on low difficulties like the ninja yokis have long windups. So while they're pretty easy if you take your time getting killed for a single mistake is more brutal than what most enemies will do.
Also they're a pain if they're teamed up with more enemies.

I think I just play differently/better? than most people. I just reduce enemies down to a set pattern and never have any issues with them because their ai will always follow the pattern.

Things like the wheel are extremely easy to deal with because they have a very shallow set of patterns. Something like a set of tengu are tougher because of their speed, range or skills, and short openings.

However, they're still pretty predictive, can't ohko most builds and give you time to heal back up, and also doesn't appear until way later compared to the wheelmonks.

Getting started in WoTD isn't really that bad. Hell the +10 weapon people recommend you have is something you can get by doing one of the non-combat run to objective quest or bullying the always available always easy Naomasa. Also depending on your build there should be at least one boss in the first three provinces that should be a cakewalk. In my case with a lvl140 spirit build with a +5 2kat and righteous strategist set it was Onryoki, Hino-emma, and the spider lady.

The problem with Tengu is they are way more dangerous at at range when you are tying to focus on killing something else.

Wheels are only dangerous up close, and as long as you wait for the fire breath to run behind them and attack them, the are a 100% non-threat. The are locked into the breath attack, and hitting them in the back instantly downs them.

Regarding multiple enemies at once in closed off areas then I would say that wheels are pretty dangerous from across the room and such. If they're far away when you deal with other enemies they will often wind up and do a quick spin from afar, which deal much more damage than tengu wind slices, and travel only slightly slower than the projectiles.

While he is crawling towards you block his mandibles. He won't keep going but will raise his body and fire a projectile at you. After you have evaded. After he has fired you should go in for some hits. Drop the lock on since it focuses on his head which makes it hard to hit him when he is raised.
Rinse and repeat. Equip some antidotes or anti-poison pills in case you can't manage to kill the stray rock before it settles down.

So I use 2 Kat. I keep them in sight, their spin up is obvious and linear, so when I see it can easily dodge. Then go completely defensive now that they are close.

From their one of two things happens. The spin off into the distance, and I repeat what I was doing. Or, they do their fire breath, I run behind them and land one attack from low stance, and they collapse out of ki. Then I just swap to high stance and toss out two whirl winds before backing off.

The problem is wheels can damage you (and do a lot of ki damage) by just... moving at you. Yes its obviously easy to beat them if you get them in a fire breath loop, but even at the right range they seem to sometime just bolt at you regardless, and there's really no solution to them just constantly rolling at you. Normal roll they don't bounce off walls, you can't really interrupt it, and they can start or stop at will. That right there is the main issue. Not the super dash or the fire breath. That shit's easy.

One on one I find tengu's much easier (axe user) as they are super predictable and you can get them into a tatsu loop with 100% guarantee, and their other shit is easy to deal with.

I just hate wheelmonks due to their absurd unpredictability. Also too simple a monster for how much damage it can do.

How is that not true for tengus? Everything they do from a distance is obvious and linear, both their projectiles and the swoop are just as easily avoided as the super spin but deal less damage.

I have basically never seen a wheel spin off into the distance, so I'm interested in knowing what you do to trigger that move. If they're close to you and you're not within the fire breath trigger they will generally try to casually roll you over, not run away, which can be annoying when other mobs are close by.

Well obviously, and I usually play defensively, but the fact of the matter is for a "basic" enemy they are very annoying to fight. If they just "walk" at you they can do very noticable ki damage, and as far as I can tell there's no real limit to it. They can just keep rolling into you until you are ki broken. It's pretty easy to stay a certain distance but you need to be semi-close to trigger the fire breath.

No one thinks they are super difficult like a boss, but they are way more annoying than they should be and far too punishing (or at least random). If there was an actual startup animation/sound for their normal rolling you could at least expect it and react, but if you are right near them you get caught instantly.

Literally untrue. All they're long range attacks are extremely telegraphed. They raise their hands long before the projectile is fired. The other projectile and the swoop have incredibly long animations with them first flying into the air. Also all these attack do less damage than a wheelmonks that guardbreaks you.
I still don't know how you manage too keep wheels far away, because they move much faster than tengus and I have never witnessed the behavior where they just run the fuck off like you said they often do.

Unfortunately I have zero ranged options. Every fight is a melee only fight for me. So I have to hit wheelmonks with a slow weapon, and I have very limited options to stagger the nue (though he's still an easy fight anyway). Hitting wheelmonks in the back sounds good and all, but at any second they can just start rolling at me and hit me out of my attack. It's basically just a frustrating encounter all around. Never fun fighting one.

Tengu on the other hand you can stand to the slight behind of them and they do a spinning kick you can punish then move to the same general position. So basically I just have to deal with a claw slash and tatsu (both will always miss), then hit them and dash and repeat. Sometimes they follow up the tatsu or my attack with the staff attack, which is easily blocked.

What's a good setup to use with the nodachi?

Should I invest in the Odachi? I really love axes what with the damage and destroying ki and the moveset is simple but varied enough to not bore me. I just can't stand Intensity and having to burn all my ki for those big numbers.

Don't attack the tengu if there are other enemies around. They have huge health bars, and their attacks have long recovery time. Deal with the other enemies instead.

The only time you should kill a Tengu before the other enemies is during Tea-Time Entertainment, and that's just because the other enemy has even more health and is even slower.

Oh I know, but I prefer not to be right in front of them (usually on the side) so there generally isn't a lot of time to re-adjust and hit them. I just smack their sides and sometimes you catch their glowey bits regardless just with the axe's size.

Hate using low stance with axes in general though. Love midstance for main usage due to its wide attack, and high stance due to single hit damage.

Wish I could use odachi's but focusing on the Obsidian Samurai set right now which requires all 7 slots.

And as for the tengu, yeah most of this discussion is one enemy at a time. Shit gets messy in larger groups.

Do points in magic increase elemental damage from guardian spirits? I made a mage with 99 points and now I dont know what guardian to use. I went with the turtle because onmyo power and onmyo leech but the healing is very low and living weapons does jack shit damage.

I used to be afraid of wheels but they're so genuinely designed seriously. The charge up roll where they come at you at lightning speed can be dodged with a backdash. It reminded me of Maneaters in demon's souls, they have an attack that can easily be dodged by rolling back because it tracks to your last placement when the move started up.

Regarding startup information i think Nioh has much better signs than Dark Souls when it comes to grapple effects. Most have their eyes or hands light up with the yokai realm smoke effect. The bird yoaki are the only ones that are a pain in the ass to me with their pole/spear ???swing standard attack that comes out ultra fast. All their other attacks have startup, like the claw spin, green beam swoop and grab etc.

In one segment of the third main mission and in I think three full side missions you're basically escorting an NPC that will fight together with you. Most enemies get somewhat confused and easily overwhelmed when there are two of you.

Has anyone tried a 3kat wind build with Ishida and Masamune's sets yet? They both give some crazy wind damage boosts on top of the Blue Dragon Guardian with Aya sub slot. I think if you get a good 50% wind damage roll on your weapons and leave everything else combat, then just use wind talismans the damage would be insane.

I was thinking of doing that but instead of using Mitsunari's armor I would use 3 Masamune (weapon and two armor), 1 Sanada, 1 Kingo, 1 Fanatic, and Tengu Visor. Blue dragon (for wind damage and talisman) and Paired Raiken (personal choice) for spirits.

I have bonus damage for consecutive attacks on my Odachi and being able to chain into other stances piles on the damage. One of its mystic arts does more Ki damage from the front to enemies that are attacking. Which doesn't sound amazing but its midstance heavy is a long range poke which just fucking obliterates their Ki if you time it right. That and one of its passives upgrades grapple damage.

Personally, I love it and will continue to love it
