Don't listen to that guy, 10pt bmp-1 is great. BMP-2 is questionable but works for inner forests.

Personally I wouldn't bring any of those two tanks. Charioteers lack an MG so their suppression in forests is shit. T-55A has decent suppression but is a bit too expensive to spam in forests and a bit too shitty outside them. But if you wanna try for yourself, start with t-55a.

The reason everyone bitches about earlygame importance in SD is that the combat triangle is one-dimensional, once you fall behind in points you can't sidestep the enemy's advantage by investing in something completely different, because all the damn game has is tank and antitank.

Dump the rifles in phase A and get more rangers. Seriously, for trading in a measly two(1 from each card) squads of crap rookie infantry with no armed transport, you get six squads of the best infantry in the game with vet 2(And vet 3 if you have a leader with them, which you definitely should if you're playing 2nd ID at all.

Not him but I would definitely recommend having a card of bazookas. Marauders are more about backline infiltration and popping vehicles coming down reinforcement roads. Bazookas are a bit more throwaway and are more suitable for frontline fighting and moving with your rangers.

Having both allows you to keep your bases covered.

Looks like the infantry's the issue here for my deck?

The Bazookas have been useful so I'm keeping them, my Marauders are never with my infantry while I can have cheap Bazookas pushing up with the line.

I've actually run out of infantry to call in twice in a row in the most recent games I've played. This was after I dropped the Phase C Rifles and replaced my rifles with pure Phase A rangers, after lurking in the previous thread.

I really want to like M7 DDs, and I see a lot of people using them, but I think they're overpriced. I'd rather just buy an M4A1 for 10 less points, almost twice the armor and AP rounds. For those slots I like taking T30s, they do infantry support almost as well and can actually fight vehicles for 50 less points, plus 2 stars so they can win against light tanks often.

I'd also try to fit in a phase B P-47 bomber so you have some ground attack before C, but that's debatable depending on what you ditch for it.

Soft targets, mostly AT guns and infantry. You usually won't kill armor unless it's really light and/or open-topped, but you can use them for morale damage if you really need to scare away a panther or whatever.

By light bombers, I hope you don't mean the P-38's with rockets, but the P-38's with actual bombs.

Never get the P-38's with rockets. They're complete and total ass for anything other than suppression.

You won't be able to counter A Phase arty that's too far out to engage, you're going to have a hard time killing Panzers in B Phase, nothing's going to run out of ammo in Phase A.

2nd ID is meant to push really hard during Phase A, and then bunker down by Phase B using long range arty and Anti tank weapons along with reinforcing occupied towns and forests with multi-purpose Rifle Leaders. If you fail to push the Germans back during Phase A, you're going to have a shit time for the rest of the game.

Rockets have faster and (generally) more accurate delivery, while bombs typically require your plane to fly a bit deeper into enemy lines. The planes that typically carry bombs are also pretty slow about evacuating so keep in mind that air superiority, or at the very least a strong AA-net is mandatory unless you want to get your shit shot down.

I think so, yeah, but I'm pretty sure HE is still the most important thing; big bombs still do better against vehicles than light/medium rockets. P-38 bomber seems to do a better job killing vehicles than the rocket P-47, anyway.

It's nitpicky, but the 100mm mortar isn't a ranger mortar. It has no veterancy. I'd say they are always a solid choice, but not really mandatory. ranger mortars get their effect in quickly, and allow you to keep moving because of it. counter battery isn't the biggest concern if you're staying thirsty, IMO.

I'm trying to find a good way for 17th to deal with wolverines, but yeah, doesn't look like they have one. I'd say just play defensively with AT guns (and don't try attacking with stugs, use them defensively too) until you can get some good air and artillery strikes in, since wolverines' thin armor and open top make them relatively easy to kill with rockets/bombs.

seems likely though that dealing with early wolverines just isn't 17th's role, since their niche seems to be narfleburglaring infantry-based decks in towns and forests.

I read the tutorialand started up Busan campaign. The first battle was in Daegu. I had a tank, a helicopter, a truck, an armored car, a rocket truck and plane pawns there.

This was clearly a sort of defensive battle, and the central region had a big 4 on it, so I spent most my points on infantry and positioned it in buildings in it and around it. I know they were in buildings, because the outlines were blue. I spent the rest on some tanks for support, helicopters to cover the rightmost region, because there weren't much cover there and it was far, and all available recon.

I launched the battle and prepared to hold the line.

Then a fucking massive APC blob rolls straight to the central region, effortlesly mows down all my recon and infantry without giving a single fuck about cover, one-shots my tanks with some rockets, destroys my helicopters before they even get in missile range, and rushes to my command vehicle which is also destroyed.

What the fuck.

Massive blobs of destruction can only somewhat work in naval since that's the way to play it. On the ground you're bound to get rekt if you try that against anyone barely competent.

That said, campaigns can prove to be more of a challenge than what looks on paper because you have to work with what you've got instead of having decks tailored how you want. I find that one of the worst things about campaigns is having little to no recon. On top of that, sometimes you have to fight superior enemies with crappy stuff, or on the contrary you have quality but you have to deal with massive quantity. All in all not a great way to learn anything besides controls and basic stuff but still a good source of fun.

This depends entirely on what game mode you're in.

Personally I think 21st is just a 10v10 meme deck that has little viability in 1v1 or even 2v2 unless you're getting carried. Having your shitty pak36's be mobile can be either really good or really bad depending on circumstances, to be honest. I think Luftlande is one of the only non-meme battlegroups, with maybe 17th SS behind it, on the Axis side. You can spam out a bunch of french tanks in phase A, but really, the deck is designed with later phases in mind, and phase A is so god damn important that you're really gimping yourself by playing a deck that has almost no phase A presence regardless of what's in your deck.

1. Stug is a tank destroyer or a self-propelled gun, not a tank. It was, as a matter of fact, constructed for the same reason as M10, just according to a different doctrine.

The fact that Stug is at range disadvantage is obviously an artificially crated situation that has nothing to do with realism, but even if it wasn't I was just merely noting the fact that a previously good unit that fills almost all of the tanks slots of a 17. has become rather awful, dragging the whole division down. I liked 17. for flexibility but now it becomes another heavily defensive division which is not so much to my liking.

An aversion to learning metas, an aversion to competition, there's dozens of little reasons that all amalgamate together to make an experience that, while it's fine that people enjoy it, they also aren't learning how to play the base game in the least because of it, and trying to return to vanilla, or even just mods that carry the original game's intended gameplay, gets their shit kicked in.

I'm not that guy, but I've actually used it like a mortar, as well. It's spammy enough and carries enough ammo that you can just send 20 rockets at an AT gun when it pops up, or use it to soften infantry during a city fight, that sort of thing. Both the phase A and B ones are pretty good.

Tube arty is also obviously good, but rockets fit well into the way I play, and they're worth considering.

Now this was an intense match. He took the advantage for A and B phase, even built up a 1,000 point lead, but then right at then end of B and all into C phase I engineered a breakout on his left flank and then once he try to re-enforce there I crushed his lines on the entire map. If I was just a bit more efficient/proficient I could have turned it into a win. A couple more minutes would have done it.

There's nothing better than just swarming the battle with fighters. Strafing infantry, strafing AT guns and AA. Then your opponent gets pissed and buys like one or two fighters which just get shot down. Then once you're done with that, the HS-129s come out and start orbiting likes AC-130s panicking and killing everything they look at while bombers are decimating entire infantry squads two at a times.

Ok, is it just me or this game is unbalanced as fuck?

Allies have superior light vehicles and tanks up to C phase, more numerous/faster fighters and dirt cheap infantry,

The only thing where germans shine is arty section, C Phase tanks and aerial tank destroyers (which cannot be used safely until late B/C)

But how the fuck are you gonna survive that when allies pushed up and wait for you on fortified positions? not to mention that therir A/B domination is someties so strong the game ends few minutes after C hits.

nigga half the german divisions so far have Pak 40 in phase A, all divisions have Pak 38 in phase A.

You've got MG42s, Panzershreks, half your infantry carries panzerfausts, pretty good recon inf carrying vehicles (222, 223), Cromwell + Firefly that outranges all phase A AT.
STUGs (especially since they're all vet) are sufficient if you're not a dumbass.
17th SS have god tier stormtroopers, use smoke to guide them up to allied inf and watch them shred,

The only problem is having the weak AA, everything else is literally a matter of git gud
Infantry is more expensive because they're better, with standard pz grenadiers carrying two MG42s and some with Panzerfausts

They are my favorite since I'm a ruskie, but damn they are so much harder to play than something like Entente. I was even having more success with Eastern Block.

USSR really is all about its expensive but good as fuck snowflake units and learning how to use them to max effectiveness. Also learning to use cheaper spammier units mixed in for testing the waters and then fucking them with the good shit.

Side note, I did not realize how good the BMP-3 was. Those ATGM's are god like.
Also I finally understand why people say USSR tanks are good. Those ATGM can bring other super heavies down a health or two before you actually engage and that is all the difference. Only helps at max range.

Anyway this is all stuff you guys probably have known for ever but its fun for me to get better and learn.

That particular game he was left flank on Mt. Ormel, and slaughtered the entire Luftland division plus some Panzergrenadier infantry in the valley, while I dealt with the Panzergrenadier armor plus the 12th SS mid and did the actual pushing for territory.

Though really, in the scope of Steel Division, there's no real functional difference between a bolt action and semi-auto rifle. The game doesn't model every individual soldier firing. Every time a unit fires a weapon, it's a 'volley', and while it may look like multiple shots, it's really just one. When it comes to infantry weapons, or really any unit that has something like '8x ____', that doesn't really mean they have 8 rifles, it's just a title for that weapon that is really singular. That's why you'll see weird inconsistences with stuff like Scotts where there are vehicles that have a 'Bren', and then a '2x Bren' next to each other listed as different weapon slots, with the single Bren doing 2HE while the double deals only 3 instead of what you would have assumed to be 4.

It's dumb and gamey, but probably done for performance reasons given the scale. There's no 'ballistics' in SD or Wargame.

I keep on going back and forth on how useful the off-map is. On one hand, you can pin an entire area for an extended period. On the other, it's a full 130 points, which is very expensive in phase A. Meanwhile, mortars are more flexible, very cheap, and also bring smoke, so I can use them to advance over open ground.

I've started leaning towards the idea that off-map is too expensive for Phase A in a 1v1.

yeah, I don't think the off-map is very good in 1v1s. it really shines in team games, where you're covering some narrow lane of city/forest. the guy you're up against is almost forced to bunch up in a relatively small area, and you can just shit on him with it.

This is the part I don't understand about so many gamers. I hear a lot of rumbling about lack of historical accuracy or more realistic simulation, but people also are super hesitant to dive into the games that have that granularity. I picked up Steel Batallian recently, and jesus fuck how the shit do I play this game.

Me and a friend are practicing 2v2 against medium AI and losing every time. It's easy enough to hold a town with infantry, but I have no idea how to hold or push the line anywhere else, and the AI always slips through the gaps and takes 3/4 of the map. I am in desperate need of some basic tips.

The AI cheats like mad.

They don't have impossible decks or anything of that sort, but they definitely react to things they shouldn't be able to see and are way too precise at micro, able to keep a unit pretty much exactly out of range or sight of a threatening unit in a way no human player would be able to do for every unit.

If you want to practice, practice against pubs, most of them are godawful wankers anyway but at least they play like humans.

I play Luft all the time. I think they are good. Hard to know for certain since opponents skills varies wildly. Everything in my deck that isn't my air units are dirt cheap and that's the way I like it.

Curious about the lack of armor in Phase A, only 50mm ATGs and Schrecks in the AT, and no ground-attack in air, just air superiority.

yea, obvious drawback, but with that amount of vetted vehicles you should actually have very cost efficient trades. Looks like they will be high skill celling division, since every lost vehicle will be hard to replenish.

Seems pretty good. Still better than anything Allies can field. Don't really know why it's 280 points, though, the same price as a command panther. Only legitemate threat to it are Jumbos and maybe a lucky wolverine, as far as tanks go. For a command tank, it's really god damn good.

Most of their target audience bought CMANO way before the Steam release, as it launched on Matrix's website some time before that. The thing is France was badly equipped thanks to the army composition and doctrine for blitz war.. Even if we forget about that for a moment, frogs were so PTSD'd after WWI my joke about morale is kinda true, most of their shit should have dishearted modifier.

All in all, it was a very one-sided war and Eugen will have to balance it out, so I will trigger werhaboos and /his/tards because they won't be able to blitzkrieg and rotfl-stomp french every single time.
