There is a pretty heavy split here between both games. I think SoI is easier and more shallow game, but SoI-A does have it's problems as well. It's pretty much a coin flip. If it was me, I'd say SoI-A, but if you can find SoI for cheap somewhere, it's not bad either

Ambition mode in it's current state was badly implemented but there is potential.
If uch a thing were to be implemented again I would take full advantage of the open world idea, have your character decide where your kingdom will be built, decide what buildings go in what location in an almost sim city like way. Entice people to come into your kingdom by increasing fame by traveling around the world and killing enemies etc Actually training people who live in your village to be soldiers you can bring to battle with you. Raid and raze other characters villages etc All implemented in a much better and more fluid way.

Let's wind back the time a little bit. After countless hopeless battle against the Yuan, Sun Ce army got subjugated some times in the 211.

In a strange ironic turn of event, Sun Ce fled to seek his father's killer, Liu Biao, to continue resisting.

Our hero, Zhang Lang, not wanting to admit Yuan Tan as the superior conqueror, fled southward, into the land of the Shanyue. There, he patiently gathered troops, in hope of some day being able to take revenge against his wife's killer.

Though, after a while, his hatred died down and he grew tired of the plauging chaos, Zhang Lang disbanded his private troops to become an executioner, executing evil doers.

With most of the land under his thumb, abundance of supplies and officers, Yuan Tan proceeded to depose of Emperor Xian, putting an end to the 400 years of the Han Empire and gave birth to the Dynasty of Shen.

Also, I find this funny but Zhang Lang has 4 wives, the first one isn't listed during the end sequence while the other 3 do. The wife who was killed by Yuan Shang and pushed Zhang Lang to the edge of sanity is the first one on this picture, not Xiaoqiao, The last two still stay together with him until the end, while the first one went missing. I was thinking of getting my feet wet with an EAGG game for the PS4. I adore Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis - would Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires or Samurai Warriors 4 Empire be a good place to start? Or Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Hack & Slash top threes are Samurai Warriors 4, Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends, and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate. You can probably buy all three for $60.
Samurai Warriors 4 is my personal favorite, but all three are just great games with a TON of content, especially Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate since it's a crossover game between the two games.

As for Strategy, They just released the PUK for Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but it may be a bit pricey still, so I'd recommend picking up Nobunaga's Ambition: SoI or SoI-Ascension.

I haven't played Europa Universalis, but the easiest comparison I can make is that Nobunaga's Ambition puts a lot of the game in managing domestic affairs (building up towns, roads, etc) and has simpler battles where you move an entire officer's unit at once than a series like Total War, which has a heavy focus on bringing the right unit types and putting them in the right formations.

I'll be honest, all the wanking of 8XL makes me sick. Dumbed the gameplay down with rock paper scissors mechanics. Railroads you to the objective more than ever, treating you like a complete retard "BIG GREEN BOX GO HERE NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW". So many systems in place to lock away content that was easier to obtain or unlocked at the start in previous games. Like 5 different in game currencies you have to grind for. The game is more grindy than an mmo. I've been playing these games since 3 and this is the least fun I've ever had with a musou. Even 6 was a more enjoyable time if you only count Empires, and especially if you include Strikeforce.

SW2 and WO were good. DW7 was only slightly better than 5 because it borrowed WO and Strikeforce stuff but forgot to add weapon strengths/weaknesses from SF making switching a completely optional feature. Also fuck swimming.

Empires games suck.
The best you can get right now with mainline titles is DW8XLCE, although it's pretty dated (it was originally on PS3 and ported as an Asian launch game for PS4).
NA and RTK have very little in common with Crusader Kings and Europa Universalis.
As most Koei strategy games they have a rather simple cities management part and battle system and they are more focused on the historical officers.
It's kinda more like Football Manager than a western strategy games (also, there's an heavy focus on actual historical events).
RTK13PK (the "Expansion Pack Bundle" n the west) is your best choice to roleplay as a single officer.
It's more about having fun and creating your own story than "beating the game".
NA:SoI is a more traditional strategy game.

Pretty good. It feels like a proper action rpg. It was kind of like how Toukiden 1 and 2 was. In Toukiden 1/DQH1, you just had a central hub and you just click through a menu to go on different missions, where in Toukiden 2/DQH2, you have a central hub, but there's a world to explore that's split into several zones.

So far, maps are less an arena where you have to defend something and take out portals, and more proper map that you'd expect from a musou game. Maps are still small and not as complex, but as less you travel through them. There are still portals, but it's placed to make you advance through the map.

Plus you can change classes which gives you access to different weapons. You can level up proficiency in weapons to gain new skills.

If you want to play Dragon Quest Heroes, 2 is the one you should definitely play.
