What's my goal from here, /gsg/? The original plan was to create Sicily but the Byzantines cockblocked me. Italy and East Francia are both super strong, I got independence from East Francia by allying Italy (but that alliance is broken now).

I'm considering trying to take Apulia from Italy but that will take a lot of super expensive wars.

I agree with him that I like some mechanics in the game and think they're better than previous games. Managing trade in HoI3 is a massive fucking chore for example, it's a lot easier in HoI4 without needing to just automate it. I also prefer focus trees to scripted events because focus trees ARE scripted events except you get to actually see what consequences the events will have down the line and where your country could go. Whereas with event chains it's either pray it's actually historical, read the fan-made wiki, or go in blind.

I also think the map looks a lot better, with the new overhaul it's even nicer. And of course the unit graphics and everything else are better.

However there are definitely some things that are sorely lacking like diplomacy and peace deals. I seriously, seriously miss the Declare Limited War option. I also don't understand why they cut out the log and the outliner from their other games. And fucking message settings, I don't get where those went.

Late reposting about the KR storyline changes. What do my fellow Longfags think?

I'd have it so the AUS doesn't form if Long is elected. Gamey? Sure, but MacArthur wouldn't coup a legally elected government if it isn't communist. MacArthur was an ambitious fucker and definitely wanted the Presidency but the guy sided with Roosevelt over his own soldiers at the end. More than likely he'd go with America First and subvert it from the inside, maybe an eventual event chain where if Kuhn (or Pelley now) radicals kill off Long once his side wins, there's an option for MacArthur to take over.

'Long wins election' should be the route to avoid the Second ACW, imo, then it can turn into a direct dictatorship or retain democracy via events.

Describe your first campaign playing that game that you actually played a significant way through (the first where you didn't just play for ten minutes, get confused, and quit.)

My first was EU3 with Death and Taxes. My first game was a Naples>Italy game like 5 years ago. I remember I spent a lot of the first few years wasting my manpower and sitting in a grinding stalemate with the other nations in southern and central Italy since I didn't know what I was doing. After I got the hang of things though I formed Italy around 1500 I think and was the first to the New World, defeating the Aztecs and Incas but staying out of North America. I also managed to take most of Greece, a bit of Dalmatia, and Constantinople, however despite forming Italy I couldn't expand past Florence. Milan, Savoy, Venice, and (if I remember correctly Sienna) had all become pretty powerful and were allied together (along with Switzerland) to ensure I couldn't expand North. One weird thing I remember happening during that game was that after I defeated the Papal states they somehow moved to two provinces in northern Germany and became part of the HRE.

Any war is unconditional surrender, no attempts to make separate peaces even though those were attempts and very frequent occurances in the World Wars. Some Balkan countries switched sides several times, Bulgaria was at war with Allies and Axis at very late WW2, etc.

In Vicky 2 and CK2 you have a lot of options on how you want to play. You can go isolationist, world police, you can try your hard at a more centralized or looser state. They're not perfect, especially not with the CK2 meme satanist DLC and memeset invasion DLC which bought ought to have been fantasy mods, not official parts of the game you pay for, but they're way, way better and more flexible than the EU and HoI series.

Also HoI4 has the worst amount of 'railroading' that HoI3 had. You're forced to fight WW2 exactly as it was, you can't go for other options that Hitler had, sooner or later you gotta fight that war. HoI4 has the same bland politics as HoI3 (so, none), at least in HoI4 you can change your government which I'll give it props for, but its so fucking dumb like changing Germany to a communist dictatorship in 1933 by just putting in some mana.

Meanwhile only things HoI3 has over HoI4 is better combat system and at least you can't (easily) conquer the world as fucking Luxembourg.

I don't remember the very first campaign. I know the game itself was EU3 HTTT (actually I think I downloaded HOI2 before that and watched it go before giving up before learning to play, only to go back to it later).

Oldest I can remember was, I think, Muscovy after the release of Divine Wind. I remember my first war against the Golden Horde was fucking cool as shit with the whole scorched earth stuff and a bunch of desperate fighting. Then it was pretty much blobbing into Russia/Poland/Scandinavia.

How many units are encircled in Moscow? Use nofog to check. I remember in my last Germany game I encircled over 1 million Soviet soldiers at Mozyr. The battle to defeat them lasted over a month and by the time they surrendered there were only ~150,000 men left. 850,000 Soviets and close to 100,000 Germans had DIED (not surrendered) in a single battle. I imagine that battles casualties look even worse.

Honestly, a grand strategy game could be improved by abstracting warfare a bit. Proper maneuvering of troops gives the player (assuming competence) a HUGE advantage over any AI, to the point where one punches way above their weight. It's the only way to win in some occasions, and obviously some degree of military leadership always played a role in wars, but some abstraction would probably make for a better concept of grand strategy.

I think the reason all of those things are how they are is because EU and HOI are war games while CK2 is more like an RPG and Vicky 2 is more like a country simulator.

Johan has literally called EU4 "a war game" and the whole point of HoI is World War II so obviously it's oriented around war. This means that you will eventually have to fight and military might, especially land military might, is by far the most important thing.

Although as far as being the most arbitrary goes I'd have to give that prize to CK2, it has so many lol so randum events and bullshit that can happen to your and other characters and two games rarely end up the same. And of course as you said, half the game is either semi-mythical made-up shit or literal fantasy garbage. That's not even including le ebin aztec invasion

EU3 with MEIOU as Flanders. I think I quit around 1600. By then I had conquered the netherleands and northern France. I inherited Aragon and Hungary. I don't know how HoI 4 handles it (I haven't played it), but to be fair, the Nazis didn't win the 1933 elections by a landslide. 33% of the vote against 20% for Social Democrats and almost 17% for Communists. These were AFTER Hitler was appointed chancellor and was already influencing the result of elections with brownshirts on the street - an election months before saw a few more votes for the Nazis and a lot more votes for SD/Commies.

They still have a way bigger population than mine, and their army buildup is scaring me.
