The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

>>
>>175504053
I really liked C:SL at first but then I realized that it's extremely thin mechanically, even compared to SC2013, and anything further you might add is autism with no payoff. What a next-gen city building game would really need to explore is demographic simulation, landscape concerns like the effect of daylight and views on land values, land management shit like soil quality and water tables, and a proper dichotomy between pedestrian focused design and parking lot cul-de-sac hellholes.

You should be able to give all the fucks or none at all. Build a low-sprawling suburban yuppie paradise, or research the technology to stack buildings on top of each other and Kowloon Walled City that shit while mudslides close down your roads and Wal-Martia sinks into the ground. Sadly, it's almost impossible for a single company to implement this in $CURRENT_YEAR without bringing an ideological grudge into it.

What really killed skylines for me was the ignorance and/or malice of the devs towards how roads work.

I don't remember that part, but I do remember the dynamic airports that made no sense at all. Still a cool game, but SC4 was my childhood.

What's the problem besides it being space inefficient? Are the frequency doublers not working?
>>
>>175842662
It's taking up (over) 20000 engine power, and It's not as impressive as I would've hoped. It has trouble cutting through armour, so I added a lot of frequency doublers.

Maybe I'm just doubting myself because I've not used lasers before.
>>
>>175843735
For offense you want 4 Q-switches on all the couplers. Small setups without any storage aren't that impressive. Storage is how you get the blow-a-hole-through-an-eerie lasers without needing a continuous gorillion horsepower
>>
>>175844341
So lots of storage and q-switches?

I tried q-switches on this one but it didn't do much, and storages just caused the damage to drop off significantly after about a second of firing.

Don't know if I tried both at once, but I'll try it now, thanks.

That's strange, this laser takes 32,000 power to run continuously and it's still pretty good after the initial storage burst.

That's... not a bad idea. I might give that a shot.

I'll use a laser based eye which scans ahead of it. Soft-body outer layer and mouth, with the rigid internals in a few different segments to provide flexibility. The eye will scan a cone ahead of it since it will wriggle for movement.

Cheers anon

Decided against the fully segmented approach. Too fiddly, and too many geoms wasted transferring information down the segments.

Instead I'm going for a more compartmentalised build. 2 segments, head and body. The head is purely for sensing and eating, I'm going to use lasers to detect geoms, where input will be filtered in the head and passed down to the body, where the main mechanisms are. The head can be moved either side for food scanning via pistons in the body, connected with super-rigid springs (tendons, I guess?).

Using multiple lasers for the eyes will let me hopefully line the worm up perfectly for an attack approach. For instance, if the leftmost laser is triggered, the worm ceases moving and slowly moves its head left until the centre laser lines up perfectly, where it then thrusts forward. The pressure on the mouthparts of the worm colliding with the food pellet will trigger the eating response, and all that needs is for the food to be shuttled down to the "throat", where it is then pulled into the body.

May need to add a separate tail segment for using air-friction steering. Preliminary experiments not promising, I may have to make it purely thruster-based.

All thought-building right now but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

Alife is cool as all hell.

Have you ever heard of the Braitenberg vehicles? They manage to display avoidance and chasing behaviours by connecting analog light sensors directly I realize they'd need a driver to the motors, no state or memory involved. Seems kind of similar to what you're doing with the lasers.
>>
>>175850361
Multiple Input Singular Operation aka mdsi mdso mdsp or whatever
a single flow through the arithmetic unit will yield 1 result per 1 input, but it can take many inputs parallely, try 4
basically you have 9 registers, 4 are input, 1 is modifier, 4 output registers (or you reuse the inputs)
example: 120+ (a,b,c,d) = (a+120, b+120, c+120, d+120), done in 1 passthrough of the calculating thingy (I don't want to use "1 clock cycle" since it's not only addition we are talking about)

about mul and div commands? div is scary since you have more fringe cases, mul however: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiplication_algorithm#Shift_and_add

>>175850465
>connecting analog light sensors directly

You have just given me a fantastic idea, holy fuck.

Instead of the bot's lasers being its "eyes", I can instead cover the food particles in lasers shining in all directions (simulating reflected light).
The bots "skin" would be made up of photosensitive plates, which would each move a geom while a laser was shining on it. So if a laser hit it on its left hand side, I can directly hook the reaction to rotate the bot to the left towards the light source, and if the laser was then shining directly on its mouth it will simply go forward.

Is this problem existing with or without trying those traffic improvement+intersection fine tuning mods on the workshop? I remember one called something along the lines of "Traffic President Edition" and there was some other big one.

I remember being able to remove traffic lights and fully change turn/straight road markings. That intersection also looks like it might work better if you used 1-way roads to merge the roads together at the left, and split the right side apart since the game wouldn't see it as 1 big blob intersection anymore.

I like that you can clip buildings together for monolithic commieblocks now, but the traffic customization ones look way too time consuming and badly integrated, unless there is a way of repeating Traffic President settings to other intersections somehow.
>>
>>175852765

Yeah. The antenna is attached to springs so it remains semi-rigid when extended, otherwise it would think it hit a food particle just from the force of the bot rotating. So when it hits a particle it rebounds, which throws the bot off centre when it thrusts forwards, potentially missing the food. The wings flare out, which increases the air friction on that side of the bot which angles it back towards the food.

Plus it looks cool

Got light sensing working for the shell of the bot. Sensors are clustered more closely together at the front to help on homing in.

Each shell segment has a simple tiny script which changes the collision group depending on if it's hit by a laser or not. Since there's a rod with a nub overlapping an extrusion on each shell segment, if it's hit by a laser it's all like "oh shit we're both collision group J get out of here" and pushes the rod inward.

That's the only scripting I'm using (it makes me feel dirty). I'm going to amplify those tiny mechanical movements into rotation of the bot to face directly towards the light source.

Third stab at making a sub that isn't shit. Still some seabed crashing issues when I set depths bellow 70 and some issues with it firing weapons before it's in range, luckily those don't require alteration to the hull. By using modular weapons, CnC, and engine systems I've almost completely eliminated wasted space and as such this sub is 20-30% smaller than the first one.
Armament:
4 missile modules each housing six 5m radar guided missiles. Total of 24.
2 torpedo modules each housing 4 6m sonar guided torpedoes. Total of 8.
Shields pending while I install and configure them.

Current cost 22900+
Expected cost on completion 23500-24500

If you wanna save space it's a good idea to structure your craft around its various systems.

> how do you guys avoid spaghetti?
Discipline. If you realise you laid something out wrong, tear it up and re-do it.

Leave plenty of space between sections so that you can re-build parts of the factory rather than having to go back to an empty field and start completely from scratch.

I usually end up substantially re-building the factory a few times. The one used for red-only science is very temporary. Mk2 usually lasts until research is done (but that was before 0.15).

Most of it gets torn down to place the roboports, which are on an exact grid; I'll move half the factory rather than put a port one cell off from where it should be.

Leave space beside (and within) the main bus for roboports, large electric poles, and pipes (you may want to pipe sulphuric acid and/or lubricant around; although with 0.15, you can transport barrels with logistic bots, assuming that you don't consider any and all use of logistic bots to be cheating).

You don't need kits to sign up, you'll need them by the export deadline on the 25th.
I've also noticed that there's a website linked on the new managers' guide from the signups page that makes kits automatically.

The interest we have now is probably enough, by looking at some of the other signups. Just go for it, you never know if the general could just lose interest altogether for the next time.

The Factorio 0.15 alpha is dank, boys. Biters are much more vicious as well. Belting out stone and coal is also a good bit of fun.

Just did my first train, ferrying iron from like a 230k patch overlapped by a 300k coal patch (fuel in situ as I call it!). Damn it's satisfying to watch a 4-to-4 dribble it out as the train comes in. My unloading setup is basically six fast inserters lined up on a stretch of yellow belt, times three, fed into said 4-to-4; so it's saturating at most half a belt. Gotta read up more on this stuff.

Anyway. Thank you based Kovarex.

Ok, so besides the cool factor, lets look at this from a resource perspective. (in not marathon mode at least
Big poles cost 5 steel(25 iron) and 5 copper, for an ore value of 30
Steam turbines cost 120 iron, plus 50 copper, plus a Storage tank of 20 iron and 5 steel, and a fluid wagon of 88 iron, 31 steel for a total ore value of 458, so the process would need to save you putting down 15.266 Big poles in order to be more or less worth it. Which actually isn't much and seems like it'd be worth it easy enough, but also consider the space between two Big Poles, you need to fill with 15 rails(worth 2.75 ore each or 41.25 for the whole distance)

You can also run it on Steam Engines instead of Turbines: lower upfront cost(only 30 iron compared to 120+50 copper) and you don't need nuclear power, but each one can only run about 10 miners(not including inserters, my tests show a max draw to be about 100kw per wagon trying to be loaded), compared to 64 miners for a steam turbine.

One last thing to consider is a single storage tank holds 25k steam, Turbines consume 60/s and Engines 30/s. So a full tank of Steam would run a Turbine for just under 7 minuets, or a single Engine for just under 14 minuets. Considering I've seen most people set their trains up to always leave a station after 30-60 seconds, I doubt this would be a problem to many. But its worth considering.

Any other thoughts on this?

>>175983210

>>
>>175983210
You're not taking into account the fact that I'm mainly using the fluid wagon to bring sulphuric acid to this mine. Since this specific train makes roundtrips to my nuclear plant to unload the uranium, there will always be some surplus steam ready for pickup. I'm killing two birds with one stone.
>>
>>175983762
>>175983210
both of you are mad, wooden electric poles are the only way to go
>>
>>175983581
Well yeah, steam does break the suspension of disbelief, you cannot store hot 500c steam in a tank and expect it to sit there for ever, accumulators on the other hand can store electricity for prolonged periods of time, Steam and electrons are not the same thing, steam will always lose heat there is no such thing as a perfectly isolated container that does not lose heat/ energy, same goes for accumulators, but for steam it takes a couple of hours to run out, for accumulators it could take years to discharge.

Sorry man steam in a tank just doesn't work for me, it's ok if they put it in the game i'm fine with it, but the use it's just silly
>>
>>175977021
Using a nuclear plant to generate 500 degree steam that you train out to outposts, power lines BEGONE

Good stuff.
>>
>>175952017
Noice.
I've been trying to keep mine in the 25K range but now that I know what I'm doing I think I'll start working on a 50k range model, then 75K, then 100K.
>>
>>175983210
>consider the space between big poles you have to fill with rails
Wat? That's not a factor at all unless you're planning on carrying all your outpost products back by hand.
>>
>>175983210
Add to that the advantage that biters aren't gonna render your outposts useless by breaking the poles. They don't attack rails as far as I know.
>>
>>175983581
>quick reminder that engine can handle only up to 160 or 180 deg. any steam over that temperature is underutilized
That's why I also mentioned that one of the good bits of using a steam engine would be that you can do it BEFORE you have nuclear power
>>175985049
well, its more of pointing out "You're already spending this many resources to make an outpost that far out there, why spend all this on more turbines to save just a bit per distance?"
>>175985491
That's actually somewhat tricky, because they will attack miners, so you need either gun turrets, which makes doing all this to save iron resources kind of odd, or laser turrets which you couldn't run off lone turbines. Flame-thrower turrets would probably be ok though.
The general rule for biter attacks is they're attracted to stuff that makes pollution, then will spread out to attack anything in the area. They'll also attack turrets, roboports, and radars, but they won't seek them out.

The dummy I play with did this to fix science production after the update
>>
>>175986840

we already have a perfect solar layout, there's no need to create your abomination.

>>175987112

sort of. you can design your entire factory so that it can be turned off with a single switch, then toggle that power switch when the attack occurs, but as far as i can tell there's no way to tell the circuit network that you're under attack.

i think you could theoretically do it with an accumulator charge percent signal, so that when it drops below a certain threshhold it disconnects the rest of the factory. you'd need an accumulator connected to the laser turrets and it's own solar panels and nothing else, and the laser turrets to be dis-connected from the rest of the grid via a power switch. when the accumulator gets low, that switch toggles on and the other switch toggles off so that the only things on the grid are your turrets & accumulator. then when the accumulator hits 100% you can toggle them back.
>>
>>175987112
Not directly, but you could do some rigging with the circuit network to shut off your factory.

Really though if you're that tight on power just build more accumulators.

the only acceptable setup is a substation in the middle with 3 accumulators in a plus shape and 16 solar panels filling in the corners. infinitely tileable in every direction, close enough to the 0.84/1 ratio, nothing else needed.

honestly with the nuclear shit you can just use tremendous amounts of accumulators as your 'green' energy, solar panels not required. i imagine the investment of raw materials for solar vs nuclear is vastly in nuclear's favor anyway.

>>
>>175988130

>>
>>175987112
Really the easiest answer is have two accumulators for each laser turret you have. But you can 'break apart' your power grid like this. Have a row of accumulators that are attached to two poles and have those poles not attached to each other(you can use copper wire to trim pole connections). One one side have your power source and all your essential buildings, like lasers and the stuff required to keep your power source going. On the other side have your non-essential stuff, like the majority of your factory. So if that non-essential stuff wants to be powered, it needs to run through the accumulators first, which won't happen if your lasers are taking all your juice. Just be warned that accumulators have a limited charge/discharge rate, so you need about 3.3 for every MW of power your base needs.

no, it's awful, 88 solar panels to 86 accumulators is the wrong ratio. the big power poles on the corners are a pointless waste of space and resources, you can slap down two more accumulators to get to 1:1 but since the ideal ratio is 21:25 or 0.84:1 there's not much point.

also it looks ugly and is asymmetrical. nothing wrong with functional asymmetrical designs, if you can make that tileable and at exactly 0.84 it's perfect, otherwise just use the existing plus format.

I'm trying to mix things up a bit from my usual main bus that does EVERYTHING fed by forges fed by trains, instead splitting things up a bit and wondering if anyone has any tips/suggestions
My basic plan is two parts, A) modular train blueprints based on the length between two large power poles, even if it'd be more space efficient/sane to do otherwise, everything will be based on the grid and all train tracks will match the modules
B)Splitting up the main bus into a construction/misc. bus, science bus, oil/oil products bus, and rocket bus with separate sites to create things like green/red/blue circuits and steel, iron, copper, and bricks made on the mining site

My only question is, how many lanes of each material should I feed the buses?
Oil, rocket, and science buses will probably be running constantly and I'd like construction bus to do so as well but once I fill up the supply chests I don't foresee needing to again. In my old mega bus I've been using 4 lanes of iron, 4 copper, 4 green, 2 red, 2 steel, 2 blue, 1 battery and 1 for whatever and 1 pipe for every liquid, but that bus did EVERYTHING and I'm wondering how to split it up now that I'm using 4 buses instead of 1

Also behold, my shitty, partially constructed new base and the remains of the one I used to beeline electric forges

Regarding the new map-and-radars thing in Factorio 0.15: given that blueprints can be made and laid down for constructor bots to construct, and that the radar vision and logistics network can be extended (with powerlines and roboports) using this mechanism, does this enable hands-off expansion at some point? I.e. not having to drive around and lay track by hand, instead just commanding robots to lay down a "track plus power plus roboport" patterns ad infinitum?

Because if so, I think I'm about to cream myself in anticipation.
>>
>>175997916

Yes. Get roboports, construction robots and materials for them to lay down.
You can't fiddle with wires or set assembler production, so you might have to rely very heavily on blueprints.

Okay this is ridiculous. How should I be using splitters? I have a long pipeline of iron with a splitter splitting off a line everywhere I need iron, one for gears one for conveyors and arms etc, but I didn't really think about the fact that I'm just splitting it in half over and over.

Is there a way to tell a splitter to only split off at a 1:4 rate instead of 1:1? Or do I need to have ALL my splitters at the start and then send out the 10+ lines of iron so each area gets the same?

Been playing this map, vanilla default everything, for two nights now. Just setting up my first perimeter, wondering if the naïve first stab at belt-loaded turrets is going to go awry in a bad bad way... like the first one grabbing 100 mags before letting the next one have a pop, that's gonna cost me half the map's iron in steel.

If you're running on coal, this sort of setup can run into the issue where your coal miners (or inserters, for that matter) lose all power and the boilers eventually run dry.

I'd argue it's better to have laser turrets on the outside, and just keep up with your need for accumulators. Put a wall up, and it'll help cushion the hurt from starving lasers. But the wall shouldn't ever be completely destroyed, and if you're getting wall damage alerts, you'll know to look into your laser power system.

It wouldn't necessarily have to use 3D blocks, but that's understandable anyway.

If you ask me, the red is a bit overbearing. Could you darken it a bit? It is supposed to be background, after all.

No.
Assuming identical crafting speeds, one furnace produces enough iron to feed one furnace producing steel.

>>176010159
To produce 40 items per second, each item having a base crafting time of 3.5 seconds, you'll need a total of 140 crafting speed.
This is a equivalent to 70 electric furnaces (or 35 per side).
Check your smelting setup, I bet there's at least ten idle smelters per belt.

Not him but while steam tanks store potential energy, they can't actually release it, they can only redistribute it to turines/engines, that can then only convert it to energy at their pace. While accumulators can and will release the energy directly, which makes them much more reliable than turbines when a biter attack occurs on your laser turret front.

I don't think this statement extends past the comparison against accumulators.
One railtanker holds 75k steam, which can keep a 5.8 MW turbine running for 1250 s (a total of 9.25 GJ).
By comparison, one cargo wagon can hold 400 rocket fuel, totaling 90 GJ fuel value (boiler inefficiency reduces this to 45 GJ usable power).
Unfortunately, using rocket fuel requires that the outpost has a water supply. Solid fuel works too, each wagon carrying 50 GJ fuel value.

Ok, so after some thought the easiest way to 1:4 would probably be a chest with a stack inserter feeding it and a stack inserter set to 4 items removing it from one side and a fast inserter with stack set to 1 unloading from another. Wire them both to the chest to only work if chest > 10 or 20 to ensure the split. This uses a total size of 4 tiles, which is way smaller than any sort of splitter only shenanigans you'd need to get an exact 1:4.

Post some defenses.

I've got all the bugs in the world funneled to this narrow stretch. They attack in a steady constant stream, but for now the 8 lasers are keeping them off the wall, with one backup fire that just barely reaches outside the wall. The gun turrets are extra backup in case they breach two parts of the wall. I've build two little side stretches and prepped them for fire turrets once I'm holding off an endless wave of behemoth biters. God help us.

Question, does it matter what fuel I use for them? They're currently running off pure crude since I'm close to my pumps but miles from my refineries. Is there any benefit to using other fuel, enough to build a refinery out here?

Their motivation was that at that point you're probably going to use mining drills more than assembly machines, so you've already started the auto crafting of those.
They changed the purple (production) pack recipe as well, instead of a pumping jack it uses an assembly machine.

Thinking about it now I'm considering moving all my smelting away from the main base and just bringing in plates by train, is this a good idea?

>>176096543
In my defense, I normally use electric miners for everything, but someone already had a bunch of burner drills feeding into smelting and I didn't want to just toss them all out if they could be used. In hindsight, I can see why some people would have issue with that.

Yes.
Plates have a max stack at 100, ore has a max stack at 50.
If you smelt off-site chances are you're going to have a LOT of space to place enough furnaces to fill 8 blue transports, and when you transport to your base you're going to be able to transport double the amount.
Personally I usually build the furnaces at the mining sites, right next to the miners.

I mean, I guess so? I suppose didn't think of that due to the fact that I always prioritize assembly machines over drills knowing that I'll need far more of them overall.
Also just now noticed that mining drills are also 2 seconds to craft rather than 0.5, so that was me being a little bit physician there in saying that 1 iron was the only change

I never liked that cuz it's a lot harder to identify problems when they occur. Not enough green cards? Could be not enough green card assemblers, not enough iron/copper plates getting to those assemblers, or not enough iron/copper ore getting to the smelters. I think Nuclear Power looks retarded and I have no intention of using it, but Uranium Rounds are fucking amazing. Gun Turrets have always been better than Laser Turrets, and now with Uranium Rounds, a Gun Turret can hit 4000 DPS before infinite research.
>>
>>176134141
I figured productivity modules couldn't be used for that, just like they can't be used for the barreling/unbarreling processes.
It's probably an oversight, considering the massive increase in yield of enriched uranium.

Unmodified, the enrichment process turns 3 'poor' U into 1 'rich' U.
With an 8% productivity bonus, the net conversion is instead 2.84 'poor' U into 4.28 'rich' U.
The ratio of rich to poor increases by more than 300%!

>>176133725
I find it odd that the author makes no note on rocket fuel.
Going by the provided numbers, it seems like the worst possible option for productivity modules.
However, with a productivity bonus at or above 12%, you're creating more fuel value than you're using.
>>
>>176137550
Rocket fuel is at the very bottom, because there's no reason to make it other than for trains and rockets, and the productivity modules cost way too much to make it worth it.

Even without productivity modules, you'll get a few extra percent of fuel value.
If using T2 productivity modules or better, you can again turn it into rocket fuel and receive even larger gains.

>Even without [...] modules
Ehhh, did some of the math last week:

Coal liquefaction:
1 C = 8 MJ ==> 1 HO + 1.5 LO + 2 PG = 1.25 MJ + 3.75 MJ + 2.5 MJ = 7.5 MJ

Heavy oil cracking:
1 HO = 1.25 MJ ==> 0.75 LO = 1.875 MJ

Coal liquefaction with cracked HO:
1 C = 8 MJ ==> 2.25 LO + 2 PG = 5.625 MJ + 2.5 MJ = 8.125 MJ

That is, however, without taking into account the energy spent in liquefying coal, cracking heavy oil and turning both light oil and petroleum gas into solid fuel: For each piece of coal you've liquified, that's 210kJ lost in the process. I've gotta finish that math.
>>
>>176150805
The math gets really messy when you include modules and beacons and shit. When in doubt stick with the least painful solution.
>>
>>176144119

This is cool, although the video should be shorter. The problem I have with it is that the trains he's showing are moving very slowly. They're just starting on their way to a place, they're not blazing through at 220km/h like the ones at my depot are. Also, if you're just walking across you can still get splattered if you're caught within the gates as they go up, though that does seem pretty unlikely.

I think I can adapt his setup and read off a signal much farther away so that the gates close a few seconds before the train would pass through.

>>176152691

I agree, I found it easier to just liquify coal because it was easier to pipe the resulting heavy oil to plants next to the boilers than it was to run a gigantic belt across the length of the factory to get coal from my depot to the boilers.
>>
>>176154576
You can toggle rail signals using combinators, right? Make a staggered stop sign so the train is forced to go slow.
>>
>>176154968

I could do that but since every arriving train from the north has to go through that stretch and all departing trains take that stretch it'd be inefficient to have that running unless I was nearby. I'm going to set up the long-distance signal for advance warning and just rely on that, seems like the easiest and most effective way to do this without relying on gates.

Fucking excel, those formulas became unreadable pretty damn fast
I might have even fucked up at some point, the HO+LO->PG cracking routes seem way more drastic a loss than I thought

Anyway, all units in megajoules: raw coal is unsurprisingly the most efficient fuel route, since it had to go through less steps than anyone else to be produced.

Close second is coal liquefaction, unless you find insanely good oil deposits, which makes advanced oil processing (aka oil 2) the best option

Weirdest thing on all this though is how apparently turning heavy oil into light oil only becomes efficient as your oil patches start to dry up

Not him, but 10 coal + 25 HO -> 35 HO, 15 LO and 20 PG,

For solid fuel it's 20 HO, 10 LO and 20 PG

20C + 50 HO -> 70 HO + 30 LO + 40 PG
20C + 2.5 SF -> 3.5 SF + 3SF + 2 SF
Net gain of 6 SF = 150 MJ

The problem is, the coal is 160 MJ by itself so you're losing 10 MJ not including energy to run the machines (if it's not solar powered)
>>
>>176174759

NPC crews in yet? Did they do that total rework on the energy system yet?
>>
>>176175617
Right, I doubled the recipe so 20 coal = 160 MJ. Solid fuel is 25 MJ each so doing the math you're losing energy through conversion
>>
>>176175463
>>176175701

Derp I'm dumb.
The products are such a tight squeeze. would efficiency or productivity work better? Can the recursive cracking recipe even use productivity?
>>
>>176175807
It probably helps, but I get the feeling the devs specifically balanced this to not allow lossless conversion. After all, in real life if we could turn coal into oil easily we wouldn't depend on oil as much (in the US anyways)
>>
>>176174595
>Is this right?
No.
40 coal turns into 40 Heavy Oil (HO), 60 Light Oil (LO) and 80 Petroleum Gas (PG).
Once HO is cracked, you're left with 90 LO and 80 PG - which turns into 13 fuel blocks worth 325 MJ (versus the 320 MJ of coal you started with).

>>176173234
>Weirdest thing on all this though is how apparently turning heavy oil into light oil only becomes efficient as your oil patches start to dry up
This sounds like you've fucked up badly.
120 HO can be turned directly into six solid fuel blocks (150 MJ) or cracked into 90 LO which in turn can be made into nine fuel blocks (225 MJ).
Why would it EVER make sense not to crack heavy oil (when using it for fuel)?

>>176175807
>would efficiency or productivity work better?
You're losing perhaps one MJ to power the buildings, whereas you're producing several hundred - the choice should be obvious.
For a simpler example, do the math on the conversion of raw wood into regular wood.
Even though the process doesn't allow the use of productivity modules, they'd theoretically allow for a gain of fuel value.
>>
>>176175807
New anon here that was just wondering that, did some calucations to see if productivity would be worth it.

Basic electricity cost for turning LO into solid fuel: 210KW base drain * 3 second crafting time * (1/1.25) crafting speed = 504 KW
LO to Solid fuel with 3 Prod 3 modules: 714KW * 3 * (1/0.6875) = 3115.63 KW

Basic net output = (25MW-504KW) = 24.496 MW
Prod 3 Net Output = ((25mw*1.3)-3.115) = 29.385 MW

Also, I did the calucations for a prod 3 filled chem plant surrounded by 8 beacons filled with speed 3 modules and come out with 2975 per cycle, pretty much the same, but a lot faster
>>
>all this work regarding energy consumption
In the end it just doesn't matter. When has energy ever been the bottleneck for expanding your factory?

Also, not including nuclear in there is kind of silly, since the only time you'd care about energy efficiency is when dealing with literal thousands of assembling machines, at which point you're either nuclear or you've covered a few hectares in solar/accumulator arrays.

It'd be more useful to know the exact ratios of input to output for every product and permutations of speed vs productivity modules, since that's useful on a large scale.
>>
>>176178268
>In the end it just doesn't matter. When has energy ever been the bottleneck for expanding your factory?
It's more about if turning coal into rocket fuel then putting it into boilers will net you more energy or is more or less just a really big version of a circle of burner inserters passing around wood.
>>
>>176178268
Doesn't matter if your autismal minmax is with respect to energy efficiency or building uptime.
Neither is particularly "useful" in the sense that any lapse in efficiency can be easily patched up by simply adding more raw material.

>not including nuclear in there is kind of silly
You're dropping into a discussion without reading what sparked it, and then talking of silliness.
Nuclear was never an option. Besides, nuclear is even more of a nobrainer than solar, what's to discuss about it?

> exact ratios of input to output for every product and permutations of speed vs productivity modules
An excel sheet capable of answering some of the previous questions about coal liquefaction will necessarily also be able to cover the effects of modules.
It's basically just a matter of extending the function to more processes.

It was a specialized bomb meant to be launched off the front of landing crafts.

Those wheels are 10ft in diameter. It was supposed to come flying off the front end of the boat, make it to the beach, roll up the beach crushing anything in its way, and detonate with 1000lbs of explosives to breach solid walls.

But it failed spectacularly basically every time they tested it.

>The day of the test was described in detail by Brian Johnson, for the 1977 BBC documentary The Secret War:

>At first all went well. Panjandrum rolled into the sea and began to head for the shore, the Brass Hats watching through binoculars from the top of a pebble ridge. Then a clamp gave: first one, then two more rockets broke free: Panjandrum began to lurch ominously. It hit a line of small craters in the sand and began to turn to starboard, careering towards Klemantaski, who, viewing events through a telescopic lens, misjudged the distance and continued filming. Hearing the approaching roar he looked up from his viewfinder to see Panjandrum, shedding live rockets in all directions, heading straight for him. As he ran for his life, he glimpsed the assembled admirals and generals diving for cover behind the pebble ridge into barbed-wire entanglements. Panjandrum was now heading back to the sea but crashed on to the sand where it disintegrated in violent explosions, rockets tearing across the beach at great speed.

>Given the results of the trial, it is perhaps not surprising that the project was scrapped almost immediately over safety concerns. However, it has since been suggested that the entire project was a hoax devised as part of Operation Fortitude, to convince the Germans that plans were being developed to attack the heavily fortified defences surrounding the Pas-de-Calais rather than the less-defended Normandy coastline.

fill a bunch of storage chests, then set some stack inserters to take from requester chests

if you don't feel like filling each chest yourself, use the console to create a player character, set the item to auto-trash and have the bots take it from you and into storage

of course it'd all fall apart when you need more than one item, and on a constant basis...
