My only advice would be is to actively look through chapters to find any and all secrets. Some characters get personal weapons/learn skills if you complete certain tasks in chapters.
There will be a chapter where you get a Wyvern Rider who looks like shit, but if you get him to a village, he will get his own personal weapon that makes him really good.
Also if you see an enemy with a Sleep weapon, prioritize getting those items. Sleep can turn a threatening boss enemy with good items into free items.

Eliwood is a one-trick pony. He is a glass cannon that nukes things that don't resist him. Mostly mages/backline units. On a cav meme team built around him, he can kill a good portion of the roster.
With that being said, he can never take attacks, and without meme magic, loses straight-up fights to most non-green units, and even loses to Taco and certain Hectors.
Xander on the other hand isn't great to build a Cav meme team around because he doesn't have Durandal to buff his one-shot capability to insane levels. He can function on a meme-team as a support/tank or on a ward team quite well.
Regardless, he can't take magical hits for shit and isn't great against mages. Unlike Eliwood however, without buffs he still wins straight up fights with most non-blue units, and can even survive hits from blue spears. Most importantly, he dominates most red infantry as well as archers and ninjas like Kags, Klien and Taco.
Conclusion: as a stand-alone unit, Xander is better. He has more durability, great damage, and great bait potential with DC to round it out. Inside of a meme built around him. Eliwood is stronger, but one-dimensional.
If you are looking for a red melee to round out a non-meme team, Xander is an excellent fit. If you want to build a team for utilizing a Glass cannon red, Eliwood is your man.

You can always run both at the same time, but since you have two Ephs you can split the roles.
Fury is good for either since he's defensive, but it won't stop him from getting doubled, nor will it save you from potent mages. I say give him something more simple like Spd +3 or Armored Blow.
I prefer Death Blow 2 over TA on +Atk since with Threaten Def Ephraim can actually put a huge dent on Hector if he really needs to ever face him.

I've been thinking over it a bit more and there's no way Nintendo would would take the time and effort to do something this nuanced but I'd like to see;
An armor with Mov +1 that moves the standard one tile maintains Wary Fighter. If they move two tiles, they are considering sprinting and therefore can't be Wary, allowing any unit with the required speed to double them.

Most of game references are from Shadow dragon, Not awakening, or other games, mostly from marth games. There is some elibe and tellius there and there but not that much. SD was fresh but not much as Awakening.
The biggest draw from the game is the entertainment industry jerking by Avex, The game got really good VA cast, even VAs from the old ass OVA, It got songs, concerts etc. Those kind of things aren't easier to market in west as Japan.
It's a good game and much as NoA is retarded, isn't something easy to market, #FE did bad on japan because it was on WiiU out of all thing.

They're pretty interchangeable, not exactly great IVs but it's nothing terrible like -ATK or -SPD. I would say use the 5* one. You can also check the IVs of the 4* one by going to the unlock potential screen and checking his base stats as a level 1 5*. The 4* one unfortunately isn't very valuable skill inheritance wise, as he doesn't get spur speed 3 at that rarity
