Depends on what you like. Some characters are harder to use and much harder to learn, but if you don't mind losing a lot at first (which is going to happen with new players anyway) you can basically choose anyone, but if you're new and don't know who to play, just try Sol, Ky, Faust, or maybe Sin as your beginner character. If there's a certain style of play you really like, though, choose that character regardless. For example, I love rushdown characters with lots of mobility and speed, even if they die fast, so I play Chipp. Died A LOT with him for several hours, but about 40 hours in, I could actually start doing some stuff with him. Probably even faster if I bothered reading through guides more carefully.

I can't speak for you, but for me I think after watching some replays that I have gaps in my defence. My techning and anti airing needs work and I don't know all my frame data as well as I should.

This means that in the beginning when they respect me I can play fairly well because my spacing isn't awful and my offense in decent. However once they notice my defence isn't great they just kind of go nuts.

If we play long enough I learn their habits and my defence improves and we go back to fairly even usually.

One way is to jab, plink all punches with mk, lk hp. The parry starts up because of the lpmphp and mk plink, but the game counts it as the second lp towards demon. You appear to be able to cancel vskill into demon at any point, so done right it can be difficult to see the parry whiff begin.

You literally cannot excuse this behavior. Other games that restrict you from playing competitive or ranked modes only make you play for like a week to a month before you're ready, and that time is spent playing non-ranked modes against other player, they don't force you to study each character's frame data for moves like an autist trying to find a new moon on a system thousands of light years away. Anyone should be able to play any game the way they want to. And I know this isn't strictly a problem with Tekken, most if not all fighting games have the same learning curve. By the time a new player is done with learning a game, it will be obsolete knowledge, and he will have to learn the next game, but at least he will begin at 20% instead of 0%, if it's the same kind of game. I have some experience with other games but Tekken would be my first 3D game.

Anyway, you realize that some games simply have higher skill ceilings than others and require more practice. This is not exclusive to fighting games. Have you never played Quake 3? That game takes a lot of practice to play at a decent level as well. Jumping in and just shooting at guys without understanding movement mechanics is the equivalent of picking up Tekken and just mashing out hellsweeps and lows.

Also, your point about games making you wait before you can play is kind of untrue. If anything, other genres have that problem more. You need to be a certain level before you can go to ranked in Overwatch or DotA 2, but you can jump in and start playing ranked in Street Fighter V, Tekken, KoF, et cetera as soon as you want. In fact, these games even have lobby systems where you can fight people far outside of your rank. I got a chance to get bodied by another really good player in Guilty Gear that I never would have outside of maybe going to a tournament via the lobby system. (granted, no one really plays ranked in GG anyway)

When you speak of non-ranked modes, I assume you're talking about training mode. Yes, you need to train against certain situations, but again, what game doesn't have this? You don't think that FPS players even in casual FPS like TF2 automatically know every property of every weapon in every situation, right? No, they have to play scrims to figure that kind of thing out. Public servers are basically the equivalent of practice mode, much like how SFV has casual mode for you to test out stupid tech that you're not sure of.

Does the game take a long time to learn? Of course. Is it worth it? That's up to you. Every other 3d fighting game (most of which are easier than Tekken) is pretty inactive right now, so it's not like you have much of a choice.

The distinction here is that in fighting games you can lose 100 games in a row and not ruin anybody's fun except yours.
In team games the restriction is there to ensure a minimum amount of cooperation from your teammates when you go into a ranked game.
