I'm playing angband for the first time after playing lots of dcss.

How does line or sight work in this game? Are there certain rooms which are lit, else I only reveal tiles adjacent to me? Also enemies are popping out of nowhere. I assume this is because I need more detection or some way to beat their stealth.

You have the gist of the light situation. Also, note that the Angband stealth checks determine your distance from a monster by checking for the shortest line between you and it, while ignoring walls.

If you have enhanced infravision, you can see pretty far, but otherwise, you can only see a little bit past your light source if you're playing a non-human.

Certain rooms are lit upon entrance (usually in the first few floors). Other areas are "rooms" and can be lit up with an ___ of Light (rod, scroll, wand, magic, etc.). And then there are open areas that can't be lit up, except via Enlightenment.

You have a Stealth level (check it on your character sheet with "C"). At least for the first dozen or so floors, it shouldn't matter too much: you can just walk away from most things.

I was looking into genres of RPGs on Wikipedia, and I saw roguelikes listed, which I never heard of before.

I played a little bit of DCSS, never getting very far, for about a few hours and then forgot about it for a year.

I did the same thing again (looking for new RPGs to play after being burnt out on the series I was playing before) and, once again, tried my hand at DCSS. Looked more spoilers and tried to seriously get deeper into the game: I was also more aware that /vg/ had a general for almost every genre, so I found /rlg/ too. Played it a bit more, got a couple of wins, and expanded my horizons.

Oh that...

One of the features of Elona is that players can share levels they've made online, and this includes originally made content like monster species (that could also be used as player pets). You use player properties in game, like your castle or your basement or your storage house, and put stuff in it, and then upload it and then other people can enter moon rune gates and try to beat the little dungeon you made or the little quest or whatever or get splattered by your unkillable super boss and her two little sister sidekicks who throw 8000 badpotions for every turn you get.

This person made a mass monster, which is a monster which makes copies of itself when you hit it, and programmed it to retaliate with Wish when it's attacked, which usually also kills the monster itself with mana overcasting.

I've been to that room myself, you can probably still go there too, if you're connected to the internet and can figure out which string of incomprehensible broken text corresponds to that room when you use the moon rune gate.

It's interesting to try just to figure out the game's artefact generation or what things you should wish for if you get a wish, but as you might imagine it also completely ruins the game.

Just get your wishes from wands and wishing wells and good old fashioned magic studying and you'll appreciate it a lot more when you do.

Body armour (and shields) encumber you. Encumbrance rating has an exponential effect on spell rates, so you really can't wear more a ring mail if you want your success rates to be manageable.

You can always learn memorize spells, even if they're in the red like on your screen. But *casting* the spell is a different story, and with high failure rates, you're very likely to cause some seriously bad things to happen to you.

My last run was something like 18 hours and there were a bunch of times where I left it on while I was doing other shit. I think I spent almost an hour in the desolation of salt just not knowing what my strategy should even be there and having to improvise it out.

If you're good, I'd imagine you could clear a floor in 5-15 minutes on average, generally clearing everything faster the farther you get in the game.

The biggest amount of time spent will be staring at your character screen/skill screen/ctrl+F to check whats in shops/reading monster descriptions/sweating while wondering whether to read ?blink or quaff !healwounds.

enormous amounts of time are saved by keying up macros, using ctrl+g, shift+x(>)/(<), already knowing what to do, and of course, tabbing.

if one game takes you 20 hours to finish this way, I'd expect every game you play after that to take less and less time until you're mainly only spending a lot of time at the exact places where you'd have to stop and think when using auto-explore

the danger of course, is that auto-explore stops automatically when sigmund comes into view, while your fingers don't

Additionally, its not really an interaction that comes up all that often. Fog blocking clouds isn't exactly as clear as it should be, and definitely not something I'd think of if I was like 5 hours into MuMo. I have faith that Basil knew of it, but its pretty up there as far as weird interactions in crawl go. It gets even blurrier as you go back if you've played more recent versions too, since they've been trying to cut down on stuff like that.

Stealth + Heavy ranged damage with bow/xbow is a sustainable way to go through pan/hell. While you do need some of those checkmarks, its usually down to regen (it really isn't hard to stack the spell + 1 regen item) and holy/stealth. The rest comes with LoS management, wands of digging and tele scrolls, and having REALLY high damage output to kill stuff quickly (and preferably quietly). Stealth is probably the most important part of the whole equation if you aren't shattering the dungeon, or glowing like the sun.

I actually think it's pretty good and enjoyed it when I solved it a few versions ago. It's a good puzzle for sure. It's just not good way to waste your life as a NEET like PCB or DCSS or Elona. You can get like one win out of it before you feel pretty satisfied and put it down for like 3 years.

Last time I went through with a TSO charms build. Holy bardiche + Sharnga, use spectral weapon + haste to essentially triple damage output for big targets and Pprojectile the tormentors/mutators. Even with that massive firepower, the most important part was that I'd often dig a killhole and radiate my exploration from that point. Killholes may lose value in actually being a killhole with cacodemons about, but with stealth and regen, you can rest to full safely. Many times my first action was to read teleport, since its essentially a free option when you drop in on a bad situation, while most players would fight. Its obviously very different in trunk right now, but I'm very loathe to touch extended trunk with a 10 foot pole due to mutations and evocation changes. If you're playing anything before wands of tele/haste were removed, you'll have an easy time if you take it safe.

However, I will report back when I do eventually do some trunk extended within the month. I guarantee there will be gnashing of teeth and suffering involved on my part, but maybe I can find something cute. My guess is that it will devolve into heavier LoS play, with even more digging and spectral weapon to body block shit.

People use windows-based compilers in some roguelikes (PCB is a good example) which create .dll files that are made only for windows 8/10 because that's what people use nowadays
old versions of windows aren't supported anymore, so things like that happen

Luckily there's a quick fix, you have to grab a really old version of that same .dll from the same dude (probably the archive for URW has some versions from some years ago, I'm sure?) and just substitute it to this one
there are no other drawbacks, it's just a system quirk
worked with PCB for me

Also I really suggest you switch to linux if you have a shit pc

you can pretend you're a human with better regen when you're alive, only because of holy wrath and dispel undead you're basically somehow a more fragile spriggan without the MR or Movefast, or when you're dried out you can be a shit version of lich form that doesn't regenerate or get any of the other bonuses other than rN and rTor. if spriggans can go lich and you only need rTor in extended just seriously why even be a vamp ever
