It's hard to gauge how long because I had a decent vocabulary learned by ear before learning to read Japanese, but I'd say one year, one and half at most. And that was taking it slowly, I was doing Japanese class twice a week. A lot of people just crash course and get decent enough in like 6 months, but that just isn't my speed.

Depends if you prefer reading furigana or listening to the words.
To me it's listening because I just know if I had furigana on I'd just get lazy and read just the furigana, despite being impractical. So a TTS reading unvoiced lines while I follow along is good.
Some people find the robotic voice reading stuff ear grating and off-putting, and aren't as fucking lazy as I am, so they just go reading furigana, or using a Kanji dictionary.

About the applications, just a matter of preference really. Both use ITH to hook text. I usually play stuff on fullscreen and I think VNR is better for that kind of environment, but each to their own.

Honorifics are a complicated issue. I really have a problem with how official translations completely remove honorifics and politeness/speech pattern without making the relationships and manners clear in the translated language, which makes a lot of subtler character relations or personality traits being completely lost in translation.
This bothers me even more in written media because there isn't an original audio to listen to and get at least some of that, granted you know at least how honorifics work.

Basically I think honorifics are an acceptable compromise if the alternative is eliminating an entire layer of characterization because the translator can't be assed to make the characters talk accordingly to their relationship or the situation around them. The goal in translation is to convey the intended Japanese meaning in English. Maintaining 1:1 with Japanese isn't feasible with that. You end up with shitty TLs if you are obsessed with keeping every bit of Japanese culture in. Putting aside honorifics, do you want translations to keep in Japanese expressions not in English like "asameshimae" and then have a TL note for what it means, to ensure maximum culture is retained? Do you vacuum fellatio faces to be referred to as "hyottoko" like in Japan? At some point abandoning 1:1 culture for clarity is important for conveying meaning nd the author's intended idea.

It's true that trying to work around honorifics is hard and makes it very easy to end up with awkward text. But it's also hard to work around ALL the Japanese culture not present in English. Honorifics isn't the only hard thing to translate, and leaving them in won't save a text from being awkward or having to work around things. I wouldn't criticize anyone for leaving honorifics in, but I also disagree with the idea honorifics are a meaningful focal point of translation quality, and that leaving them is a clearly better choice. It's more complicated.

Abandoning 1:1 culture accuracy isn't the same as abandoning it all. You talk about conveying the intended meaning but talked about removing an important milestone in the characters growing closer.
Japanese people treat people not close to them by last name shouldn't be a bit of culture you sacrifice, keeping it isn't being 1:1. Especially because to work around that and convey the same meaning, the rewriting of those two characters before and the whole point of the conversation would be far too excessive. There has to be a balance somewhere.

I didn't talk about "removing an important milestone", I talked about expressing it in another way. I wouldn't say that concept is far too excessive, because that kind of thing happens all the time whether you keep honorifics in or not. Easy example - dropping Keigo and going to Tameguchi is really meaningful, but what do you suggest translators do about that? It can only be written around. Expressing the use of keigo in different English, and then expressing tameguchi in different English. It's not excessive to say honorifics can be written around when so much important stuff is already being written around just like that.

Also, I originally said I'm fine compromising with having honorifics over having the translation bare of that entire layer, meaning I'm assuming it's not a very good translator. Let's not pretend most anime and manga (or even videogames) is well translated. Everything in this discussion would be rendered moot in a quality translation. Honorifics, which indicate character relation, should be treated like the Keigo and Tameguchi in this example. Now answer me honestly, you see that happen often?
My original argument was more "well, if nothing else, I'd rather keep the honorifics" than the honorifics being vital.

It's not about retardation, it's about simply being born in different cultures. If I tell you the Japanese see blue and green as a very similar color, would you be retarded for not starting to call green blue? No, because you were born in a different culture.
That said, I do agree that keeping honorifics is a safe choice for poor - or even mediocre - translators, as it lessens the intense burden of translating somewhat. I think we can settle this amicably with that.
