If you ever want a lot of non-okawaru finesse with your tabbing, become a follower of the Wutang sword style. Sil combat in crawl is incredibly potent, and all of the council's piety abilities are extremely strong. Most notably, the 2 instant turns let me snipe a curse toe from in the middle of a mob of draconians with a leap attack, into some walk cleaving and a thrust. Really nuts. My only regret is that I couldn't find dragon form, for kung fun dragon fists.

I forget the exact words but the gist of it was that if it takes longer to move diagonally than orthogonally, then there is one quickest path from point A to point B. If moving diagonally is just as quick as moving orthogonally, there are multiple quickest paths, which means a little bit more thinking about how to evade monsters and suchlike.

You can do it so long as the spell selection is 'fluid,' which is the ""problem"" most often seen with roguelikes that use something like the Bresenham line algorithm to calculate ranged effect targetting.

@ is you, . is floor, W is wall, D is a great hell wyrm, X is the most effective place to target (more or less). If you try to aim at the wyrm directly, the targetter will be blocked by the wall and your spells will not hit the wyrm. Farthest I've ever gotten, though I never play melee dudes (I'm a gladiator, just found a book of battle). This is actually pretty fun. Chei is neat. My biggest two concerns now are getting a nice weapon, and keeping my hubris in check.
