I mean 2 barely had anything to do with 1. Considering how Automata sold well and was critically acclaimed I have no doubt SE will ask Taro to do a third game. But I expect the third game to only be slightly related to the fist two.

Unless SE decides to remake the original instead. It would be cheaper, as a lot of the work is done already compared with making a game from scratch. Plus a Nier with better gameplay would be very well received critically, and it might even outsell Automata considering it's more tame in terms of fan service and the protagonist is a guy so it'll more easily appeal to normies. I think there are a lot of people who are now aware of the series but never got the opportunity to play the original and would jump on a remake.

The more I think about it, the more that the whole Ark stay/leave option strikes as bogus. The Ark couldn't have been built at the very last minute; it had to have been what N2 was building even as 9S attacked the resource collectors and the tower itself. The taunting announcer voice, all of the documents left behind, and the battles with the infected 21O and clone 2Bs were designed to inflict as much misery as possible on 9S. And, yet, at the very last minute, 9S gets a message "Haha, just kidding; we were planning on buggering off to another star all along. Peace out, Earth! PS: Yo, 9S, wanna come along for the ride? We <3 you, man!" and he's supposed to take that at face value?

In C-E he allows himself to be 100% corrupted. This fucks up his self-consciousness. They could restore his body, but there's no traces of his mind there anymore. There's also no mention of 153 backing up his data on that route, probably because he was already far too gone.

Now in D he dies from a sword stab before reaching 100% corruption just like 2B. And if she was brought back, same will happen with 9S. 153 also starts backup of his data right after he gets stabbed.

By the way I don't even think that story is about 9S and 2B, I think line one actually disproves that because we know from the memory cage that 2B and 9S didn't have strong feelings for each other at first, whereas line one suggests some kind of love at first sight. I do think the story has obvious correlations to 9S and 2B though as far as how it describes a conflicted and distanced relationship.

the bunker was a one time thing that was going to set a reason for androids to believe in, then vanish to cover up the evidence of its falsity. that way androids wouldn't kill themselves off out of depression and lack of reason to go on.

It's goes on in Nines' version anyway. After the bunker is destroyed, battle data is passed on to a new set of androids. We already knew that this was not a machine plot since documents from that version of the project ended up in their hands when they were supposed to be destroyed.

It's not limited to love. It's more general, it's about purpose, how people cope with having it, working towards it, being unable to fulfill it, and losing it.

This theme recurs again and again and again and again in the Nier games.

The major defining characteristic of the machines lies in that every special unit has (and was created with) a singular purpose. They will do everything they can in pursuit of this goal. But what's more interesting is that the individual machine lifeforms seem to be completely incapable of ever changing their purpose. If it fails, they'll just try it again and again. If their purpose is fulfilled, they just stop and if their purpose is denied, they go completely crazy.

Now think back about what Adam said about humans. They're interesting. Humans definitely have a base purpose, which lies in essentially wanting to continue themselves (in genetic makeup, but also ideas, actions etc.). But what's interesting in them to the machines really lies in how often they deviate from this purpose. They are irrational. Arbitrary. But above all, they often sought their own purpose.

Now the core purpose of the androids it's obvious. They were created to serve humanity. With this in mind, the reason behind the YoRHa plot are obvious. The androids were stuck in an conflict which didn't seem to have an end. To prevent desperation from setting in, they needed to have some kind of visible purpose. Something much more concrete than the odds of being able to restore humanity from some genetic data left behind from the gestalt project. As the commander said, nobody fights without a god to die for.

However the androids seem to be far more variable in their sense of purpose compared to, the machines. They love, they fight even after the original reason is gone. They are capable of moving past their original purpose.

So what does this result in? A complete deadlock where neither side can actually achieve their purpose even if they win, with the only way out completely dependent on the malfunctioning of either side. From both sides it's essentially a macro-scale coping mechanism for their lack of reachable purpose. As the pods say, the only option left is to find purpose in the struggle within this cycle. Purpose shouldn't be something that put onto you, it's something you have to find for yourself.

it was entirely on machine side. the androids weren't trying to malfunction or purposefully weaken themselves. check out the timeline where it shows some excerpts from their war. they were losing badly. they had no illusion that they were winning or keeping up to try weakening themselves.

entire bomb squad annihilated. most teams wiped out immediately. 10 minutes after remaining ones engage the enemy all communications are lost. over 4500 units lost.

both yorha descents, a2's and 2b's end with extremely heavy losses. a2's team loses most, just 4 survive, and they weren't even expected to survive. in the end, a2 was the sole survivor. 2b's entire team is annihilated, only she survives.

the androids were fighting desperately just to not go extinct, which was possible only because machines were allowing them to stay.

and on top of that, rumors that humans may not even exist anymore were spreading, which absolutely killed morale. imagine, you're fighting a losing war you're absolutely outmatched in, dying for a goal that's probably not even real anymore.

n2 was the only one stuck because of a logic error, dragging everything around it behind. once it figured out that having an enemy to destroy is unneeded, went past its programming and left, it's possible the whole war will end, since all remaining machines were connected to it, so that change likely affected them too.
