My biggest gripe with Gaiden was always the terribly slow system speed (which to be fair plagued FE1 as well) and Echoes remedied that very nicely.

The plot is pretty good, generic, but better than the standard FE. As for the gameplay, I think it's fantastic. The maps are shit, but the strategy on Hard mode is real. Enemy summoners in the late game are relentless, and the monsters they summon are tough as nails and come in hoards of 6-8 at a time. Mages will nuke your Armors without a second thought. It's a blast.
