But truth actually is that 9S is dead, A2 is dead, and 2B is in torpor, and all life is pointless death trip.

I mean I almost just have to laugh. The end of the game now is literally life is meaningful, companionship is great, NO IT'S NOT. Who writes like this? This is like ending a coming of age story with the previously angsty protagonist coming to terms with the facts of life and finding purpose, and then hanging themselves 10 minutes later, because fuck you.

Something to keep in mind is that there is no such thing as "what-if" in regards to Taro's game's as they don't abide by a single timeline. A good case is Drakengard 3, which had sequel stories to Ending A, and Drakengard 1 as we know it is a sequel to an ending not even seen in the game itself.

Been mentioned already here, but Yoko Taro absolutely loves parallel timelines and supplemental material. There are some rather large distinctions between C/E and D/E, such as if the machine network fucked off to space or if 9S gets impaled by his own sword or not.

C/E appears to conclude in a bad end with everyone fucking dying and nothing having any meaning or significance. Thing is, we won't know which version of E is "canon" until the next installment in the series. Nier1's storyline came from an ending in Drakenguard that was largely considered a joke ending.

As far as we know, "Nier3", or whatever they want to call it, can stem from a yet to be released side story or whatever other fuckery Taro cooks up. The ride never ends.

Can we ask Taro vía twitter if 2B9S is canon? Just to settle this shit down

Even assuming that's true, you still have an ending that explicitly asks you to negate the games nihilism just to throw it back in your face. It would be absurd to give the player such a major fuck you simply for choosing C instead of D.

And it still makes the ending biased towards nihilism by giving so much detail and extra content to that ending, while the happy ending gets nothing. This is one of the primary things that pissed people off about LiS, is that the endings were obviously biased towards what the devs wanted.

The happy ending gets "nothing" because that's the fucking point. We remove the authors and ourselves from the equation, the androids are free from destiny and are given an opportunity to make a better future. The bad ending doesn't follow this and thus they are still locked into the cycle of misery.

What you are saying actually really would have made sense if E was only a continuation of D in the game. Even the names somewhat make sense since C is meaningless, and D implies growing up. You're placing a lot of importance on it being a cohesive experience when that's not what the game's trying to do. This is a game that tells you half of its story, then tells you the same half over again with a few new wrinkles thrown in, then tells you the second half of the story up until a point where you are forced to pick between one of two fairly different endings, and then makes you view the other ending, only to then offer you the opportunity to see the final ending. And that's not to mention the side stories not part of the actual game, or stuff like the Anemone or Devola/Popola novellas that can be viewed at any time or ignored altogether. The narrative is disjointed by design, like it is in many of Taro's games. It gives you the pieces and its up to you to put them together.

And I admit I worded it poorly, but when I posted >>175227608 I didn't mean to imply that the C ending couldn't lead into unlocking and playing the credits minigame. I meant the the narrative of C doesn't lead into the game's version of E. You can still unlock E directly from C but E is unrelated to it story-wise. I've watched people on twitch do ending D first and then do C -> E. While the transition between D and E makes perfect sense, the transition between C and E is quite jarring in comparison. You see A2 saving 9S, but then the credits start and the pods tell you he (along with all yorha) died anyway. How 9S managed to die offscreen was never explained, which made the whole C -> E experience quite confusing. Mothefucker isn't being "edgy". He's literally having a fucking emotional breakdown for the entire later half as everything he knew and loved is destroyed and/or used against him. At that point 9S wants nothing more than to avenge 2B and then kill himself.

Nah that's pretty damn edgy, just like A2 killing baby forest king. But as I said A2 redeems herself later while 9S never does. I could sympathize with him at first but eventually he just became unlikeable and, yes, edgy. And he stays that way for the rest of the game.

Same happened to me. I think it's due to already having the items needed during one of Devola and Popola's quests, so you end up not needing to travel and end up confronting it.

On my next playthrough, I intend to discard one of the necessary items so I have to go on the fetch quest.

Most of the average players who completed D then C are still gonna see the hopeful yet ambiguous E. Players who completed C then D will see the same thing.

Both parties will arrive at the same optimistic conclusion. That's all that really matters.

I thought I was finally free of this depressing feeling but apparently it wants to haunt my dreams. I haven't actually fought Emil yet, but I have read up a bit on it and something about letting him self-destruct. The dream felt strangely like it would be an actual portion of the game. My dream was just about an Emil head at the top of a tall, tall tower that slowly crumbled to the ground as he said sad things.
