basically he set up his army in a sort of checker pike/shot formation, and had probably expected me to come towards him. He had his rangers hidden out along the sides of his army, and was probably expecting me to charge into his stuff w/o discovering them. Unfortunately for him I deployed my wolf riders right on top of one of his rangers, which exposed his whole plan. Then I sent the wolf archers/chariots out to deal with the rangers, and the only melee unit he sent was a group of slayers, which meant that I could actually do some damage with the chariots missile attack. Because he had no arty and I had the hammer of gork, he was forced to come to me - and since he had set up in a checkerboard formation, his units were in dense formations that allowed the hammer of gork to be very effective. By the time he got into melee w/ my army alot of his units were dead/routed, and my chariot was able to rear-charge his remaining ranged units, preventing them from firing.

The first time I played Empire, Nordland and Middenland declared war on my in turn 15, VCs killed Stirland shortly after, Wissenland fought a war against the Dwarves and lost all their armies before getting raped by Skarsnik, then Ostermark invaded and destroyed Talabecland.

I ended up with a vague feeling that the Empire campaign needed some serious work.

Purple sun is amazing when you get it on heavy mass tightly packed units. I.e. dwarf ironbreakers, chaos chosen, greatswords. but mostly dwarfs. it fucks them up. its not so great on lighter infantry because they get "tossed" clear. wind of death is good on everything and it actually can bounce off of objects. Vortex spells need to be used right but generally i find they cost too much magic and most of the time i'm using other cheaper spells.
