Read through the pastebin, but I'm not really looking for the best "game", just looking for a game that can make me laugh at the weird shit that happens through series of randomized events.
Have only played Ivan so far and that had many fun moments, until It started getting sort of predictable.

Tried a bunch of those, but I had way more fun with Ivan or DF.
Really just want something with text based combat where anything can happen, or with as many options as possible. Ivan was especially fun with the gods, mutations etc.

MfBe is easy, just any melee Merfolk will be easy.

Shields are unnecessary -- at a +4 aptitude, you'll be able to use the best two handed polearms very early (I got 27 Polearms skill by my first rune, for instance), so there's no point investing in shields.

Light armour will probably be all you're able to use, and that's relatively good, since it'll allow your Dodging aptitude to shine, too.

But really, it's easy. Invest in Polearms until mindelay or so; invest in Dodging and Fighting; invest in a teensy bit of Armour; and rinse and repeat.

Kinda. Based on hazy recollections of what PCB-R dev posted a while back, they get a chance to "reroute enemy reinforcements" based on their char-level and how many adjacent squares are empty. I think at max power it's ~90% chance. Don't remember if it stacks with anti-summoning amulets or not.

One change is reworking curses/cursed items, so that they're a bit more like curses that you'd normally think of IRL (gypsy curses, pirate curses, etc. etc.). So, it's not just "shitty weapon/armour stuck on your body" but more like a combo of mutation/Hell effects from Crawl, for instance.

The curses still suck balls to have, but it's a bit more interesting than old versions of curses.

I haven't played too much PCB, but I think it's the same (i.e. you know the item is cursed beforehand). A much higher percentage of items generate with curses in Angband trunk than before, so it's occasionally the only way to get good stuff without too much grinding.

1. Bring back monsters that were removed just to be removed (hill giants, hippogriffs, anubis guards, Norris, Maud, Wiglaf etc.). Don't bring back ballistomysomethings, various beetles and water monsters though.
2. Stop having HA HA GOTCHA shit in early D by making kobolds, goblins and orcs with blowguns/wands separate monsters so you know they are dangerous and don't have to tip toe around a fucking kobold because there's a 0.00000000000000000000000000001% chance it has curare.
3. Revert Ogre changes, make an actual Ogre Mage species for the current Ogre apts, reduce their HP and Fighting apt by 1-2 ticks probably, in turn give them slightly better magic aptitudes/attributes. Those fuckers cast LCS in monster version after all.
4. Bring back a Priest background but make it so you choose your starting god. Remove Berserkers, Abyssal Knights and Chaos Knights. You can't switch gods as a Priest.
5. Merge Monks into Wanderers - give the latter the Monk piety bonus.
6. Remove Warpers. There's nothing fun about them.
7. Bring back Stalkers and their spells as well as potions.
8. Remove identification. Everything is now identified on sight. Ash would need some buff to compensate, dunno what though.
9. Remove or rework the *Drain brand, including amulets of harm.
10. Rename Deep Elves to Elves.
11. Remove Beogh. It's basically Yred for Hill Orcs. Possibly remove Hill Orcs as well, not sure about that though.
12. Make Passage of Golubria work in Zot again, but nerf it so that you can't use it if there's any portal still remaining on the level. To compensate for the nerf, make the destination portal appear exactly where you want it; the entrance would be still placed semi-randomly.
13. Remove chopping off hydra heads mechanic.
14. Give slings and sling bullets to some monsters in Dungeon or Vaults so that you don't have to pray for Shoals or go Oka/Trog for sufficient amount of ammo. Rename fustishit back to greatslings.

15. Significantly reduce the amount of random levels in Pandemonium, make them slightly smaller in size as well. Once you encounter all for unique pan lord levels and still haven't gotten demonic rune yet, you find a holy pan which is your last chance to get the rune; afterwards you're transported out of Pan and can't enter back.
16. Unique pan and hell lords can now come after you during the orb run, though it's a rare occurence.
17. Reveal the spellset of random pan lords immediately. Add one non-trivial spell to the set to compensate.
18. Make Nemelex decks of the same type take only one slot - if you find more of the same, you get more uses. God abilities need some reworking to accomodate that but I'd have to think about it a bit more. Also nerf decks of summoning.

What's the point of it? So that you have to carry a dire flail/morningstar on your meleedude to switch for one type of a monster? Because it's crosstrained by axes anyway. It only makes long blades even worse than they already are due to their relative rarity.

Ogre magi in D&D were not ogres who happened to also be magi, they actually were a different species of monster from the common ogre, inspired by the Japanese oni (hence the horns) and often featured in oriental settings like Kara-Tur/the weeaboo eastern parts of the Forgotten Realms.

Ogres and ogre-magi in Crawl were fused in part as a buff for regular ogres, which were shit, but also probably because the dev team weren't very well-read in nerd lore.

You crush everything the same anon because your action delay gets increased as well. You get some resistances including rTorment, but you get slower reactions to things and inability to walk away, you also lose 3 armor slots. I tried it in extended, it works somewhat but like I said, isn't nearly as good as unarmed statue, where you have 12+UC base damage (so typically 30 or more) and a fucking shield on top of that.

It really isn't a fault at all. For races that have a harder time getting high weapon skill, a good rule of thumb is to get 1-1.5 levels in fighting for every 2 in your weapon. For Ds and Mu, I like to go as far as get my weapon delay to .9-1 (like 6 weapon skill) and then focus fighting up to 5 as my first skill goals. It'll increase your accuracy and damage faster than just focusing weapon skill, and the HP actually does matter in the early dungeon. The returns will be small, but having an extra 5 HP can only help you. Its on that weird crawl paradigm of "enough is far better than overkill."

Spider>Shoals if you have a shield. Spider if effectively trivialized by using a shield, the only tough monsters are emperor scorpions. Then again Shoals has a chance to spawn shops and it's easy if you have a shield AND MR. Both branches really benefit from having Sinv because of ghost moths and Ilsuiw. You can abuse stairs in shoals really easily because they all use polearms.

Snake> Swamp

Snake can be all sorts of awful with the whole shock serpents thing, but it's a guaranteed source of shields. It has really nasty monsters but they're all slow and you can abuse stairs really easily. The only real threats (considering you're near the stairs and you should always be) are anacondas, salamanders and shock serpents.

Meanwhile It is impossible to do swamp without a shiel. Swamp is usually a third rune, after you clear some of vaults to grab some shields from guards. Hydras don't fuck around, they just bite.

Swamp is also an extremely good source of swampies and big swampies, which can tear through annoying non-posion-resistant uniques with their confusion and poison breath.

So you can't really say hardest or easiest. What you can know is that they all need shields except for snake, which has shields by default. Snake is actually the most forgiving branch.

Band melee has multiple blows to average things out and spells are mostly fixed damage or lots of dice, so the only really random bit is the whole "could cast slow, could cast mana storm" part. Which crawl also has, and it interacts with all the other highly random parts to make it even more random.

Regen rings, Slaying rings, Bucklers, and Boots of Running are all verboten, but a regen large shield, or slaying gloves are pure and virtuous.

The reason slaying and regen rings are banned is because they can crutch you through all of D and probably L and O too, but if you find artefact gloves or shields with regen/slay and you can actually use them you've already earned them and are probably worried more about instant death than anything else. If Regen and Slay are forbidden at that point you might as well ban Reflection too.

Boots of Running are never not absurdly strong though.

A. Mare Internum seems okay so far. I don't like this artstyle, it doesn't mesh with the feeling he's trying to capture but I'm going to keep reading and see if it picks up.

I'm veroni and I don't use bucklers tho, but I'll totally use gloves of slaying if I find them.

I haven't died in PCB in a while so I haven't done the dozen or so MuMo runs I usually do in between splats.
