>How do I stop my dorfs from eating raw food when I have a fuckton of lavish meals?

Are you certain they can actually reach the lavish meals? Are you certain they're not much farther away? How do you know?
>>
How can one game be so based?
>>
Lavish meals are only for export anyway.
>>
>>174886145

Really? They don't make the dwarves any more happy?
>>
>>174886323
Who cares? They have alcohol.
>>
>>174886145

>Sell all Lavish meal to the caravan

>Food expires-in 4 day, its a 5 days journey

Truly super villains in the making
>>
>>174886367

Bro, I've had fortresses spiral into stress and madness. I want them to live the most lavish lifestyle I can afford.
>>
>>174886437
The peasantry don't need more than plump cookies and crackers anyway, the finer food should be for the finer folks anyway

now back in the food lines shoo shoo
>>
>>174886323
I thought higher quality meals make dwarves happier too, but apparently there's a bug: it only makes them happier if the meal has at least one ingredient that they like.

Food/meal variety is important too. The only readily available food in my current fortress is tallow-only meals, and they're getting heartily sick of a constant meal of deep-fried fat-battered lard-covered lard balls.
>>
>see picture of dotsman last thread
>realize the fucker is sitting on his own tapestry
>his farts are more artistically talented than I am
fuck
>>
After reclaiming a fortress 2 of my dwarves do nothing except spam "cancel eat could not find path"
I have tried to burrow or forbid all food, but it still happens
>>
>>174887106

Mmm I dig. I usually grab food from caravans so I think I'm set on that.
>>
>>174888550

Sounds like a poor bastards are gonna glitch themselves to death.
>>
>>174888550
Only 2? Where are they? Are they separate from the others? Do they move? Do they take jobs? Try to isolate the problem. If the problem is indeed the dwarves themselves not moving for some reason, try digging the floor they stand on to "reset" them.
>>
>>174888550
The broken fog of war means that you can see some parts of the fortress without necessarily seeing the corridor leading there. Dorfs can't path through unknown areas, which causes what you describe.

The solution is simply to make a one man squad and move him around the fort until all known areas are connected.
>>
>>174889657
>[undiscovered parts of fortress]
Oh right, I completely forgot about that, disregard what I said in
>>174889597
>>
>>174888550
Have you fully rerevealed the entire pathable portion of the fort? Sounds like there's a path to something they want that's at least partially unrevealed. It's the same kind of error as the "cancels store in stockpile" spam that people get after breaching a cavern and not exploring it.
>>
>tower in the middle of the desert with 100z deep level moat full of undeads

>>174890393
You know what? Fuck this question.
I'm going to do this anyway.
>>
>>174890673

Now you're playing Dwarf Fortress
>>
>>174890393
Work how? Are you asking if it's possible to make a tower and a 100z deep moat? Aside from the question of whether or not a 100z deep anything could qualify as a moat, sure. It will probably cut into all three caverns, and possibly into the magma sea depending on the depth of your embark, in which case you couldn't fill it with undead unless they were also magma proof.
>>
>>174893034
Or he pumps the magma somewhere else, and walls it off.
>>
>>174893194
Yeah, it would be terrible if the magma actually worked as a defense.
>>
>>174893250
Well, if he really goes 100z then the magma at the bottom isn't going to defend him any more than 99z of open space above it do. Neither will undead at the bottom for that matter.
>>
>>174893034
I remember that undead were magma-proof in 34.11- inert corpses disappear, but zombies just keep burning for eternity. Has that changed in the newer versions?
>>
>>174893724
Yeah, it was fixed years ago. 2014, in .40.01 IIRC.
>>
>>174893486
It's obvious that he'd do it for cosmetic reasons, rather than functional ones.

Personally, I'd prefer a 10-something drop into a magma moat, BUT, there should be platforms with zombies on them over the magma. One floor above the platform, your necromancers can overlook the platform through a window (necros can animate through windows, no?).

This way, anyone who dies on the platform can be reanimated. Plus, the occational zombie falling into magma prevents overpopulation and the fps issues that come with it.
>>
>>174894003
Sure it'd obviously be for style points. I was just pointing out to >>174893250 that the magma wouldn't serve any defensive purpose.
And yes necros only need LoS to reanimate.
>>
What are good heights for moats and drop pits? I figure 2 z-levels won't do much but stop people climbing out, has anyone done dwarven research on how far you can drop a goblin to get x%probability of death or disability? The wiki suggests 20 deep but I feel that's probably to guarantee absolute splatter, using wounded gobbos as target practice could be more entertaining.

I am embarked right next to a river too, maybe I can set up floodgates next to the waterfall...
>>
My investigation has gone tits up and now I'm stuck about 5 floors underground with an injured foot, I managed to crawl away through a few empty rooms into a dead end, eat some food and drink some blood splatter. Is it possible at all to sleep inside a hostile building?
>>
>>174894216
Depends on whether they're armored or not. If yes, 10z+ isn't excessive for crippling injuries, and you'll kill some too. A while back I did drop tests with dwarves in the arena, and at 9z (the max for the default arena) dwarves in leather armor would often injure hands and feet, but only rarely would they get other injuries.

I wonder when he's gonna implement global lightning so he could rewamp old static color scheme for a fluid SDL RGBA control system. Imgaine how cool visual improvements could get, like so you could guess a dragon's age by the color of its scales or make some colorful magic explosions and stuff. I remember somewhere in devnotes he wanted to allow glass objects to change ambient lightning when the light goes through them.
Really moistens my dreams.

Most of them have the "no decent meals" thought and I see them carrying "prepared" food to the dining room and eat it. There are two stockpiles, one under the tavern with lavish meals and one under the kitchen with raw foodstuff.

Any other obscure games that I should know about?
Im sure there are more games like DF and aurora
>>
Beginner here, have a few questions:
- do I have to designate a drinking area next to the river for my dwarves?
- Where can i get seeds? my dwarves eat all the plump helmets very fast.
- Have made my dwarves dig a hall to create stockpiles of stone/jewel. But only one is moving the stone, i check they all have the job hauling stone enable.
- is there a stockpile for ore and metal?

thanks in advance

>>174906763
cataclyms is .. interesting. but not as good as df.

Some People around like elona..
>>
>>174906876
1.)No but if you want them to drink from a specfic area you should zone it as a water source.
2.)Gather Plants, Embark with them, or buy them from traders. You should know that cooking plants destroys the seeds but brewing them does not.
3.) Are the other dwarves engaged in another activity?
4.) You can create custom stockpiles with p-c-t
>>
>>174907180
thank you very much.

for the 2) how do i make sure they do not cook the plants? I just disable every cook labor every time?

3)the dwarves have finally moved their asses, dont why they were doing nothing for a while.

If you didn't order the cooking jobs then they're not being cooked. Eating them raw leaves seeds.

The more profit you give the caravan the more they bring next year. Anyway, you lose nothing by cooking your meat, it's just a straight value increase.

ok perfect, thanks a lot.

A trade caravan has arrived, in the 'g' command on the depot, i define the item i sell or the ones i want to buy?
Sorry for all the questions

>>
>>174907882
The items you want to sell. g is to move goods to the trade depot. When you have set what you want to trade, Dwarves will pick up the items and bring them to the Trade Depot. Make sure to press [r] to get your broker to the depot. If you have no broker, set him in the [n]obles menu.
Once all the items have moved you can [t]rade on the Depot

>>

No problem asking questions. You can wiki all the stuff you're asking, though, and will almost always get better answers faster that way. It's just by chance that there are a few people monitoring the thread who don't mind handholding.
>>
>>174908478
i read the wiki a lot, but you guys tends to give the extra advice which is often very helpful.
Also the answer tends to be more precise and you give the extra hints on future problems i might have.
>>
Do you actually engrave stuff with your engravers?
I think they look pretty stupid. So I just let my engravers (usually 2 or so) smooth everything in the fortress
>>
>>174909047
they = the engravings
>>
>>174909047
You can disable the weird looking part of the engravings but it will still be highlighted. You could alter your tileset to make them look exactly like smooth stone
>>
>>174909047
I smooth everything but I only put engravings in strategic locations. I also hide them so they have the generic (and much cleaner) engraved stone tile instead of showing whatever random shit Sibrek McStoneworker decided to make.
>>
>>174908065
So for example if they have a preference for plumps, and I only got raw fish and meat lavish meals, they won't go for the lavish meals over raw fish?
>>
>>174906245
>Most of them have the "no decent meals" thought
I know your pain. I cooked like 2000 masterfully prepared roasts, yet fuckers decide to eat dirt and raw mushrooms most of the time. Even raw meat though its not in their "preferred" food list".
I solved the problem by ordering 5000 roasts to be prepared and stockpiled, turning all my raw food into prepared meals, and stopping the raw food production completely.

My entire fortress is now happy as FUCK due to eating amazing meals, hell they are more ecstatic about food they eat than stressed about those children I atom-smashed a few weeks ago during my "fps boost yearly cleanup".

If you've played Rimworld, then you should already understand half of what makes Dwarf Fortress interesting: the potential for mayhem due to only having partial control over your little psychopathic pawns, and the player's ability to make them do whatever it takes to survive. It makes for some pretty good stories.

What sets DF apart is threefold: 1) you have the freedom to build whatever the hell kind of fortress you want, 2) there's a lot going on under the hood of the game, ranging from world events to dwarf personalities to the fact that combat tracks injuries down to individual teeth, and 3) a fort can have as many dwarves as your computer can handle. (Also, you can build up/down with Z-levels.)

Meanwhile, Gnomoria mimics Dwarf Fortress's game mechanics and slaps a fancy coat of paint on it, but stripped out everything that was remotely interesting.

It's just a list of what races can be encountered/played as in Masterwork and how they're categorized. He also gives clear credit to mod authors now, so I'd like to think he's learned or listened to critique.

Other than that, I'm baffled where all the hate's coming from, especially since no one on the forums (or all the other authors of the mods used) seems to be complaining.

I agree about the bloat, but only for the dwarves, since they got everything and the kitchen sink. Most of the other races are okay.

Nobody complains about anything on the forum that relates to the forum because they'd be Toadhammered for starting fights.

Did you miss the whole thing with the tileset?

Fucking dibujor shows up, talent just falling out of his ass, fixes a few sprites for the spacefox set, bats around the idea of a 32x32 tileset, posts some demo art, then had the notorious beast the real life of responsibilities show up, beware it's noxious bills!

So after a while meph comes sniffing around the corpse and grabs the various bits dibujor made, says "hey mind if I use these?" and later puts out "Meph's tileset" using creature graphics from another dead project, plus those various dibujor bits and such while noting that "eventually [he] intends to make their own" graphics?

Yeah, people thinking that guy and his shit are dwarf fortress is never going to be cool.

the way in which dwarves grab food to eat seems to follow the same rules that all the other jobs do.
at least i'm somewhat sure they would... not much science has been performed on the way which a dwarf selects a meal to eat (or if the meal selects the dwarf, like workshops do)

i believe it works as such:
- a dwarf becomes hungry and generates an "eat food" job
- (POSSIBLY) the nearest available, reachable food item is selected by the dwarf, whichever that is.
- that food is now tasked by the dwarf to be used in the "eat" job, which prevents it from being selected/used for other dwarves, just like a workshop-tasked item is
- if the tasked item is a stack, (POSSIBLY) the *entire stack* is claimed until the dwarf is finished grabbing their meal from the stack
- at some point the dwarf may decide which chair or chair+table they want to sit at to eat their meal on

it's not currently known if a dwarf with a preference will intentionally seek out that food item for their meal

Automated material control, efficiency, and quantum stockpiling. Pushed minecarts minimize the time dwarves move raw materials to stockpiles underneath some workshops, then half-finished products between workshops, and then finally to the trade depot. Extremely simple to setup really.

Fort entrance design. I think I've found the best solution.

>3 wide entrance for caravan
>5x5 trade depot

>U bend around a barracks

>Barracks exits into last third of the U bend
>U bend leads to up ramp on the other side of Depot
>1x3 bridge is raised behind the Depot to skip U bend when desired

No, I did it accidentally before while trying to set up a bodyswap script from scratch: if you take control of a non-histfig and don't save the game drops you into random units and animals until you end up stuck as close to the 0,0 coordinates as you can be. Usually this ends up being a cave creature like a giant bat but I've ended up a demon before too.

Why are my dwarves ignoring my fields?

I have 3 farm plots, all with plump helmets ripe to pick, and no one is picking them up. Most of them have seeds underneath them planted, but they still don't pick up the ripe ones.

I at first thought maybe my farmers were just busy, so cleared them of other labors, but that didn't work

Then I checked and set orders so that anyone can harvest

And double checked that I have a stockpile for plump helmets

I have like 6 idlers. Is there something I'm missing? This has been working fine for the last 3 seasons.

Start a fort, if its your first it will starve or dehydrate, watch it die. Then start another fort with the knowledge that you have to produce more food/drink. This fort will likely fall to a werebeast/forgotten beast/necromancer/ vampire. Now you know you have to build defenses and train a military. Start another fort and with all of this in place you will likely learn that elves dont take kindly to cutting wood or trading wood items with them. This is how your third fort falls.

The game really isnt as hard as people make it seem its just an unintuitive UI.

>unintuitive UI.
I'm not going to defend DF's UI, but I should point out that the UI in DF is kind of a necessary evil.

Most games have very limited functionality compared to DF, and they are usually already done when they get published. Thus, making a UI for them is pretty simple. They'll have a bunch of buttons for "base" functions (i.e. build, hire/upgrade units, move units, tech tree etc), maybe a few buttons for meta functions (pause, slow down/speed up time, etc), and maybe a few buttons to some gameplay gimmick (i.e. sacrifice soul of unit, etc).

DF, one the other hand, has a very high level of functionality. Furthermore, the functionality is evergrowing. It's hard for Toady to just sit down and re-arrange everything, because as soon as he adds something new, it will all be outdated again.

Even with its obvious flaws, I must say that Toady has handled the UI problem relatively well. For example, most keystrokes offer some sort of mnemonic hint because of the chosen letter.

Then, there are the inexcusable inconsistencies (i.e. different keystrokes when digging stairs and building stairs respectively).

Overall, the UI doesn't bother me that much. It's mostly a hurdle when you're new to the game. We can hope that Toady makes some minor improvements, like he has done in the past (like when he made esc back out of menus, rather than space).
>>
>>174959669
This game really is tough, don't feel bad if you're not getting it even with these guys telling you it's easy.

Take your time with it. Make sure you have your ui configured in a way that you can actually read all the menu settings (Default lnp leaves you with curses tileset that is crisp, but if you're playing in fullscreen, it's tough to read all the small font) and if anything isn't making sense, there's no harm in just watching someone do what you're trying to do on youtube.

But you get the most out of it when you just try it yourself and then look it up when it isn't working
>>
>>174961519
don't recommend lnp to new players.

I can understand and accept that a more experienced player uses it to make some basic stuff easier, but for a new player, it's just counterintuitive.

after all, the new players need to learn how to play the base game early on, so that they don't become left in the dark during the long periods where lnp isn't up to date.
>>
Are there any drawbacks to generating a large map on a rig with beefy specs and then using it for fort or adventure mode on a less robust rig?
>>
>>174961353
I agree. What people dont seem to understand is that new features were added over a period longer than a decade snd I dont think toady ever sat down a planned out how he was going to implement these features. To me it comes off as more "This is what I want to happen and be available to players" It is functional to older players because they saw each update added piece by piece instead of how new players come in and literally go "wtf is this"
>>
>>174961803
I don't even know what an lnp is. I have a dfhack and a tileset running

the flowchart is really helping me, I think its just a matter of sitting dumbfounded most of the time at first until I get used to whats going on.
>>
There are no s
>>
>>174961884
THere are no specs beefy enough to the average consumer. If youre looking at your build and how it will play DF you need to look at single core performance and FSB and RAM speed.
>>
>>174962183

I usually play it on the work mainframe. smooth sailing then
>>
>>174961983
Still, there are some UI improvements I REALLY want.

For example, Toady has said on multiple occations that he wants to integrate workshops into the zone system. Instead of building a generic 3x3 workshop, you assign a workshop area with asize of your choice, then the dwarves haul the necessary furniture there according to their needs. This also suggests that we can finally have multiple dwarves working in a workshop at once. Maybe on different tasks, or maybe co-operating doing the same tasks (like having one dorf, maybe an apprentice, operate the bellows while another does the actual smithing).

Also, it seems necessary to me to integrate the hospital system (and maybe the justice, bookeeping and management systems) into the new "location" system. Instead of appoint all these people as nobles, we give them a job at a very specific location in the game.

After that, the screens of those functions can be linked to the location system, effectively freeing up a lot of buttons.
>>
>>174962183
Maybe large map was the wrong term. I'll rephrase. Are there any drawbacks associated with generating a map on my desktop PC and then moving it to my Microsoft Surface?

Thankfully you can remap everything.

I mean, the default adventure mode layout sucks, largely it's kind of an outgrowth of how fort mode plays, but you don't find yourself with one hand constantly using the numpad directional keys in fort mode so keybinds in the jkl; side of the keyboard aren't annoying.

As is for 99% of the shit I do in adventure mode I keep my hands on numpad+asdf. I reach over and poke the far side for like, companion [l]ist, tal[k] history, [o]dor, tem[P]erature(+alt, time=shift, weather=alt, had p set for a dfhack key as I recall), [j]ump, [h]url(or s[H]oot), u[n]equip, gar[b]age, [m]ovement, and so forth so I can have [t]alk and [e]quip and [w]ander, [q]uests, re[a]ctions, statu[z], [c]heck inventory, [s]tance, [v]iew, d[r]aw weapon, [G]rab handhold, e[x]amine and use items, const[r]uction, consum[E], [g]et, insert into inventor[y], b[u]ilding actions, and so forth.

Sadly having my numpad set up for viewing above/below/etc and scrolling lists in adventurer mode means my fort mode keybinds have some weird shims to keep them working.

People think goblins abduct our children so they can eat or torture them. That's only half the truth. There are these interdimensional child molesting vampires, you might call them demons, that control the goblins and give them advanced off-world technology to feed on our childrens suffering. They are stealing their souls! In return for their service the demons give them immortality.
But that's not all. Elves! What do you think is up with those guys? Same height and size of a goblin. Same immortality of a goblin. They are working for THE FUCKING DEMONS! ELVES AND GOBLINS!!! ONE AND THE SAME!! ... Excuse me. Got conscripted last month. Every time I start training again my testosterone starts going up. Also ate a cave crocodile steak this morning. Full of hormones as well.
>>
>>174967761
So, anyway. Why do you think elves constantly complain about cutting down trees and stuff like that?! Maybe you think it doesn't matter. We're dwarves after all. What do we care about wood? But for humanity it's a far greater problem. Elves are gracious and peace loving and pacifistic. They are designed to subvert and infiltrate us, while the Goblins just wage direct war against the free people of this world. They don't care about hiding their demonic cruelty. Elves are designed to trick you. Don't let them foul you! They shape trees with their demonic powers! They brainwash animals! They forbid you to cut wood, expect you to buy their "grown wood" from them instead. They give you a nice animal once in a while so you keep trading with them. so you actually have to give a shit about their demands. These "grown" items, these "tame" animals... they are all infused with demonic magic. Eyes and ears for the demons in the goblin fortress. Their mere presence is slowly corrupting you and making you weak. Once the day comes and the demons attack all these animals will turn against you. A single "grown" hatch or floodgate for the water supply of your fortress will poison it all. A single grown barrel, reused for wine, ale, drink after drink. All demonic poison, slowly corrupting your soul. Ready for harvest.
Buy infodwarfs water filters today! Only certified non-eleven, non-goblin material. All stone in our water filter station is handcrafted out of pure, casted obsidian. The blood of the mountain solidified into pure dwarven rock. Order now.

sometimes, when sparring, two militia members can teleport through the wall of their barracks.

>Tarn Adams: We usually call it our fantasy world simulator, but it's really incomplete, so we can call it a spaghetti code bug hunting simulator. You take control of a group of dwarves and mine into the earth looking to avoid crashes and face buggy behavior. It's kind of like an RTS in many ways, but it goes into detail concerning each of the individual dwarves unintended behavior and crashes in due to the dynamic environment and so on. There's also the "adventure mode" RPG in which you can take a single character around to explore the world. But that is even more incomplete than the rest of the game.

>After this loss, a much lazier farmer got so nervous he stopped producing some kind of cave tuber, and my dwarves no longer had booze to drink. Eventually the thirst for alcohol weakened my guards, and a pack of large 'S'-characters (I think) tore through my delving.

>The next game this writer started using graphics packs created by the game's fans, which made things considerably easier. Old experience of ASCII graphics didn't help, not even an old Nethack veteran.

I have things like prickleberry seeds, almonds, gingko seeds, etc., all of which aren't useful to me to grow in my farm plots. Can I throw them outside and return them to the ecosystem, helping wild plants to grow again next spring?

Or are they just good for cooking / taking up space in a bag?

If you block the route out from the depot it doesn't matter what happens further out, did you put up a trap or have a tree grow in your wagon route?

whoops, that's probably it. I was having some kobold problems and tried to fix it by surrounding the damn depot with weapon traps. Christ, I'm retarded. I figured the merchants would just have trapavoid.

That being said, do trees really grow / reproduce at an appreciable rate in dwarf fortress? I figured for the muh immersion stuff trees were more or less stationary and wouldn't grow, but now that I look around I think the area around my fortress has become much more thickly wooded since I got here (and since the initial culling of a few trees for beds and the like).

More retarded than you suspected, the merchants don't have trapavoid, but the kobolds do. A dog on a chain will solve your problem.

It takes 3 years from a sapling's initial appearance for it to grow into a tree. The saplings present at embark may be anywhere in that 3 year interval.

So in designing my hospital, I neglected the fact that stagnant water apparently causes infection, since wells don't "clean" the water. Is there any way I can make the little one tile pond constantly flowing back and forth, by carving out an extra space or two and using a pump or something without flooding the hospital?
>>
>>175071874
I usually make a cistern connected to the outside of the map with a floodgate and pump water in there. A well is also connected to the cistern. Pumps desalinate water and I'm sure they clean it as well. You can periodically open the floodgate to drain the cistern or open it al the time to have it flowing. That hurts your framerate though.
>>
>>175071874
Water flow isn't what makes the water clean. Water from a stagnant source is stagnant. Water from a tile with a contaminant is contaminated. Pumps clean and desalinate water, and I've seen it written that passing through a grated u-bend will as well. The reservoir it feed needs to be at least 2z deep, at least on the tile the well draws from.

>>
>>175075034
She isn't sad.

She's simply stating the fact that you killed a creature, which objectively makes you a killer.

It's a bit confusing.

The same applies to "murderer", by the way. If you killed someone unprovokedly, then it will objectively count as a murder, and everyone who finds out about it will think of you as a murderer.

This doesn't necessarily mean that anyone thinks badly of you. Unless they're yelling at or spitting on you, they don't judge you for it.

Murderer links in to the portions of reputation that involve the identity of the histfig, nobody will ever call you a murderer for killing random space-filler npc merchants and whatnot, but if you kill thousands of them you will be known as a legendary killer.

Murderer also isn't a broadly applied label, two people can be standing beside each other, and know each other well in game, right?

You can tell them both that you just killed a bandit, one of them will thank you for it, and speak well of you.

The other will spit and call you a murderer, and say that your protection of the defenseless means nothing now.

Later you may investigate and learn that the one spitting was the grandmother of the bandit you killed, so she's like "yo, I wish it hadn't come to this, but with no other recourse available, all I can do is cry and spit at you" basically.
>>
>>175078337
From my experience anyone who ever calls you a murderer is using the term with a negative connotation. i.e., they always have a negative opinion of you if they think you're a murderer as opposed to just a killer. This even holds for people who themselves murder as a matter of course or culture; goblins, night trolls, bandits, intelligent semimegas and such.

>>175087518
I've never seen any two people react differently to the same death. Like, if one guy in a town is pissed at you for "murdering" a bandit, everyone else will be too. My working assumption was that individuals' interpretations of an event get baked into the data as the rumor system propagates it, so once one person finds out Urist McAdventuredude killed his cousin, the rumor he he spreads goes from being "Urist McAdventuredude killed some guy" to "Urist McAdventuredude murdered some guy", with all the reputation effects that go along with it.

As long as the cistern the well draws water from only has "a dusting of mud," it'll be good. No water flow necessary in the well tile.

So yeah, pumping water from a dirty source into a clean reservoir (a hollowed out chamber of whatever size you want), and drawing water from that reservoir, will work.

The cistern itself could have anything in it. Mud, blood, corpses, syndrome dust, etc. As long as the top tile of water directly under the well doesn't have any contaminants the water that comes up won't either. But water that comes from a stagnant source (murky pools) or a saline source remains stagnant or saline unless it's pumped or grate filtered.

It's good that people make effort to bring the game's mechanics to the light
The other day I was discussing with some friend irl about the game, telling him how deep the combat/tissue system was, and he told me
>yeah, such a shame you cant 'look' at the wounds man. not even complaining about graphics, apparently, the game makes calculations about hitting or not in a previously made wound when atacking, so there must be wounds actually defined in the body parts

He got me good, I hadnt even stopped to think about it
With music is the same. Toady spent a hell of a time making an actual coherent music system, and to the player it just seems random lines describing an invented song
But now you can hear it, you can say, 'man, the Toad made this possible'' and that's awesoem

>apparently, the game makes calculations about hitting or not in a previously made wound when atacking, so there must be wounds actually defined in the body parts
Not exactly. The body parts are defined by tissue layers, and each tissue layer tracks how much damage its taken. So if you stab someone's upper right arm three times it's not generating three different wounds in three different parts of the upper right arm, it's damaging the skin, fat, muscle and bone in that order, and determining how much damage each layer took based on the contact area/momentum of the attack vs the relative size of the tissue layer, all the way down until the attack runs out momentum. There aren't separate locations for wounds within the body part itself except where explicitly defined (like fingers on hands or tongues in mouths). It does, however, know how many times it was wounded and generates historical events for each of them, and a creature can have multiple scars on the same body part thanks to that.

>>
>>175107605
the toad said so in a recent interview where he talked about things that the fans havent found out yet
there's code for hitting in an already made wound, which causes extra/further damage
If you make a thin/small body part, make the skin adamantine, and the rest normal (muscle, bone, etc.) it will take lots of hits or even upgrading your weapon before you pierce the shallow layer of skin, after that, hitting in muscle is more frecuent, because of shit like this
>>
>>175108146
>Existence is something so weird
Can you really say so? There's not much else to compare it to. And a thing can't be weird except by comparison. Especially not everything.
Although I suppose it's weirder than nonexistence by default. A lot less likely, at the very least.
>>

Yeah, that's exactly what the known mechanics of the tissue layer system would predict. What you're describing doesn't need any additional mechanic to happen.

Obsidian casting is a hell of a drug.
So I've got a repairable magma piston with a magma chute dug into it. The design is imperfect, though, and sometimes the water that fixes the top layer leaks into the chute. I haven't found a solution yet, but I'm working on it.
Any way, at the bottom of the chute are some obsidian bridges for magma collection. When water leaks into the chute, obsidian walls get cast on top of them. Invisible obsidian walls. I've just discovered that these invisible walls can invisibly accept designations.
I discovered this as I was digging a new maintenance tunnel, thinking the old one was blocked off, when to my surprise a dwarf came along and dug an invisible ramp into the invisible wall, and other dwarves came and started to dig the channels on the visible floors above. I absentmindedly had the ramp removed, not thinking about the job cancellations that would follow when the path disappeared. One dwarf cancelled his job, and then the damnedest thing happened.
A dwarf climbed up the invisible obsidian wall beside where the ramp had once been, and did his fucking job. That's right, a dwarf. Climbed. On purpose. To work.
Not to chase a kea or a buzzard. Not to strand himself in a tree or on a ledge. He climbed an invisible wall after the invisible ramp was invisibly dug away and did a job.
I don't know what to think about this.

These days all you get is some fucking DLC code or coupon and a health and safety information sheet, unless you buy the deluxe edition of course.

I finally embarked on an ocean and my third migrant wave showed up at the same time as a werewombat. As they killed it they all ran directly down my wagon ramp to my fortress before I could close the 2x2 bridge I was using to seal my fort off from access. I had just finished a pump on the surface to desalinate the water and pumped in into a series of tunnels to muddy my farm and fill a cistern but hadnt gotten other bridges up to close the channels. I give them some time to have their final drinks before burrowing them all in my electrum statue garden and sending a lone pump operator to seal their fate. I abandoned him there (for the time being) to watch the tide come in. as they begin to drown amidst the memorials of promotions and battles I abandoned him there to live a life of solitude with his only remaining companions, a breeding pair of dogs and his pet cat.

He will live the rest of his days with the guilt of killing everyone he knew.

I hope he knows it was a death far preferable to becoming one of those horrid creatures of the night.

Say you were on a ledge with a 10z drop. If you built a 1x1 floor connected to that ledge you could or build a 10x10(or a 100x100 for that matte) floor area connecting to that 1x1 without it falling.
If you were on a flat area you could build 1 support and a staircase (to access the level your floor is going on) and make any size floor on top of that support and then remove the staircase if you're so inclined
>>

Connected means next to it? I had built floor that was next to bridge on one side and ramp on another. Ramps should support floor, right? But my dwarf fall 10z lvl down after attempting to build floor.

If you didn't have a cave-in then support has nothing to do with it. We're not playing your fort, there's not enough info provided to know what you're doing wrong.

>>175164934
They probably are and you're just not noticing it. Food hauling is a high priority job, and dwarves will grab up the eggs really fast. It's easy to miss if you aren't just watching the nest boxes all the time.
>>
>>175166906
But i don't seem to have many eggs with my 12 peahen, they already in use for 2 seasons. Sometimes they give eggs, sometimes just doing nothing. Just now they decided to start laying eggs. I had cave-in with 1x3 floor. If floor (at least one tile of it) just should be next to something then i don't understand what can i possibly do wrong.

The wiki explains in detail exactly how support works. It doesn't tell you that because that isn't a thing it could tell you. That's not an aspect of how support mechanics function.
I suppose english isn't your first language? I don't ask as a dig at you, I think perhaps you're just not understanding what you're reading. The wiki page on cave-ins is clear and precise.

no, it's an entirely appropriate response. We already know you don't want to play dwarf fortress, even if you don't yet.

>>175173546
so are your tiles connected to something on one of those axes? if so, it shouldn't cave-in. there is no other support mechanic.

How can they be not connected? I built floor just like walls, i guess dwarfs can't fly and build floor in the air. Maybe they can build it diagonally, but for this it should be at least 3x3.

>>175173546
The rest of the section your quote comes from gives you any special cases you should know about. Your quote itself gives the mechanic exactly as it functions.
The article on supports is about a building. It shouldn't exhaustively cover cave-ins because it's off topic for the article and already covered in the article about cave-ins.

There isn't a skill that makes constructions build faster. Architect (building designer) is for the first step in some buildings; trade depot, bridges, roads, forges, supports, archery targets, I think that's it. Those buildings have a hidden quality modifier that both the architect and worker that finishes the building (depends on the material) contribute to.

There's variation between how long the same job takes so I suppose I figured it was that, but from fucking around in the arena just now it looks like the variance is down to analytical ability/intuition/spatial sense/kinesthetic sense plus strength/toughness/endurance. Mostly strength/endurance/kinesthetic I think, as they raised the most.

I don't think it's sloppy linework, it looks like a pretty deliberate style (>>174962830, >>174907604, >>175032949) to me at least, the sketchy pencil work and visual noise come across like an interpretation of the gritty noisy look of vanilla ascii "feel" but I'm not an art expert, just a fan.

It's like "man, drew, if you would just clean up the linework so it doesn't look like you sketched it with a pencil that would rock, and since you're here, ninedots, think you could tone down on the hallucinatory vistas some?"

Incidentally, this one >>175032949

That picture doesn't have gritty linework at all. Compared to his other pics, it looks very clean, and still has just as much personality.

Wow.
I haven't done much with pressure plates and I ddint know you could set them to only be set off by certain amounts of water.

Now my next project is a goblin "juggler" where they are pitted and depending on their luck are with instantly atom smashed or flung back into to the air repeatedly until they die
>>
>>175204115
You can, you'd just need to be creative with powered rollers and pressure plates, or hatches and pressure plates. Bridge and hatch waving has a hard fps cost, though, even when they're not normally connected with the rest of your fort's pathable terrain, so it may not be worth it. I like to think of fps as a currency that you spend on cool shit, and automating a goblin smashing tunnel sounds pretty cool to me. I think you should do it.

The trick where you set it up so you have like four pressure plates in a sealed 1x4 room, all set to go off at 7/7 water and have it filled with pond orders until you get 6/7 6/7 6/7 7/7 with the 7/7 tile hopping around is a neat one.

Petrified/fossil wood is fascinating because it still has a wooden texture.

Why would you ruin that by cutting them, like in your pic?

Is there any easy way to find out where a dwarf's quarters are? Trying to rearrange the living quarters so dwarves can live nearer to their respective industries. The eventual goal is to have a proper burrow for every industry with only a few haulers moving all around the fortress to stave off the inevitable fps death.

I'd like to transition them all to different beds slowly and individually, as opposed to just freeing every bed and then dealing with the chaos of every damn dwarf having to run around and get their stuff to move it.
>>
>>175216187
Just assign them their bedrooms if youre already keeping track of that.
>>
>>175215513
Aesthetics. If you think that isn't a beautiful piece then you're a pleb. And if you think a bark texture is the most interesting thing about a fossilized tree then you're a dullard.
Anyway, the wood may have mineralized that way naturally. The bark is least likely element of the wood to survive fossilization, and the degree of preservation and rate of mineralization can vary wildly between species and environments.

>It's an advfort option, sorry, was just being thorough, it helps spam things like that for testing by just grabbing last job+suitable materials instead of waiting for confirmation.
This is the same advfort that you can get from http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=123944.msg5873164#msg5873164 right?
How do you use that option?
>>
>>175216435
Like I said, I'm trying to do it gradually, dwarf by dwarf, so I don't lose out on productivity / caravans for a year. Because of this, and because I also want to avoid a homeless dwarf problem, I'm trying to avoid accidentally giving any dwarf more than one bedroom, but I need to find their old bedroom and free it before I can do that.

Are there any shortcuts to do that or am I on my own?

Youre on your own.
Avoid assigning multiple rooms to one dwarf by just... keeping notes. And you dont need to find their old bedroom at all. They wont get a negative thought when you demolish the old housing districts, and that will clear up the assigns just fine.

>>175220289
I don't think so. Honey and royal jelly, while edible, have to be cooked in a meal with something else. You can make mead though, which is good.

You'd have to combine it with a real, solid food source (plump helmets, goat breeding, etc.)

This world was a success: I've been trying to get pockets of habitable space broken up with mountains and giant lakes, figured that out pretty well and though I had to use gm-editor to jack up the sites cap mid-gen, I finally got one of these with a highway/subway system linking up the civs.

does it ever hit you guys just how god damn great this game is?

I was just reading over the thoughts and preferences of some of my dwarves whomst i didn't know as well, and anyway one of them had killed a goblin in the year 257. and i just thought, holy shit, that's before this fortress was founded, but after my last fortress fell. She was just this person, who had lived a god damn life in this world that was unique to me, who had lived a life that would never be seen again, and she had had this one moment, of martial victory over a goblin in the year 257.

idk it just hits me now and again the god damn scale of this game and it blows my mind. i feel connected to the world and its struggles
