EVADING HOSTILE FLEET
>>
>>174818046
>"When an AI-piloted, human colonist ship from the United Nations of Earth malfunctioned before reaching its destination, the emergency override systems activated and awoke the crew from their cryosleep modules. The ship crash-landed on an uncharted world with no casualties and few injuries, given the courageous efforts from the commander and pilots who took over. Since all communication functions aboard were irreparably damaged in the accident, these humans were completely isolated from Earth. The ship's AI - which held in its archives vast information about humanity and its accumulated knowledge - was salvaged however, which made it the perfect teacher for new generations of people born on the new world, the Alarians. The mentoring and guidance from this AI was vital for these humans to prosper on their new home, bootstrapping a scientifically oriented society in a matter of a few centuries."
>>
Reminder to report and ignore shitposting.
>>
>>174810190
I'm thinking
>Simple Naval Doctrine
Default Early game doctrine, little coordination between ship captains
>Strategic Defense Doctrine
Early defensive doctrine, ALL stations are more durable/deal more damage, ships have combat bonuses within your borders
>Attrition Warfare doctrine
Ships have bonuses vs mining and research stations, better FTL retreat, faster ship build speed to replace losses better than the enemy
>Indirect Approach doctrine
Faster ships, cruisers and corvettes have significant combat/evasion bonuses, better damage vs stations, much better FTL retreats. hit and run mixed with attritional warfare.
>Battlespace Destruction Doctrine
Destroy the enemy's fleets in pitched battles. PD/flak does better against craft/missles, ships have longer ranges, better armor. Admirals can command more ships in a fleet.
>Carrier Supremacy Doctrine
Fleets revolve around carriers ala IRL carrier task forces. Strike craft have much more evasion, speed, and damage; Carriers replace strike craft losses much faster. Carrier support aura (within this strike craft get even more bonuses) is larger. this doctrine is coupled with an overhaul of how strike craft work: they can launch as soon as the fleet enters an enemy system and engage targets on the other side of the solar sytem.
>>174811376
yeah and the AI could act based on what fleet doctrine it chooses. if it took the indirect approach it would focus on taking out your economic stations before engaging one of your fleets for example.

Couldn't PD be defeated with Swarmer Missiles if employed in big enough numbers?

I think biggest problem with missiles was that they all target one ship causing overkill and wasted dps as spare missiles disappear instead of seeking new targets
>>
>>174819585
Regular PD is actually decently balanced honestly, missiles and strike craft still need buffing but its not as bad as people make it out to be. Flak on the other hand is OP as shit and needs a fucking huge nerf or just straight up removal honestly.
>>
>>174820078
If you need to waste large amounts of slots to counter something you're better off just going for the other thing.

That and the overkill.

I modded it so they take half the time to build and produce 1k energy at completion. It feels a tad OP now but I mean come on its a mega structure it should have a point to being built rather then just cause I can. And yes I know in real life the dyson sphere is pointless since the energy to make one would take more then you would get out.
>>
>>174820743

Who cares if it's OP, for 4 trait points and 200k minerals it better fuckin be.

Aaaw...

>>174821026
Doomstack is the best way to play. Here's combat 101 for every single encounter in the game
>play cat and mouse with enemy doomstack until catching and killing them
>have transport doomstack follow your main fleet doomstack
>capture planets one by one (no need to leave occupation force or micro separate transport fleets as the AI is too slow and stupid to recapture them)
Remember to stick an admiral to your main fleet and general to transport fleet. They provide massive bonuses.

Also, when are they going to allow sticking transport fleets into main fleets directly? It's boring to micro them separately, but if you have them on auto-follow they'll always jump slightly behind and it's easy for them to get locked into battle and get fucked in less than a second. Or better yet, improve shipbuilding and allow sticking transport modules on proper ships akin to Distant Worlds.

>>
>>174822023
Because in early game everyone has at least 1 defensive alliance. Fanatical purifiers never conduct meaningful diplomacy. So the poor AI bastard is forced to have no allies if anyone attacks them and if they attack the AI has to fight 2v1 and of course the AI is to dumb to pull that off.
>>
>>174822141
Fleeting is a trap.
>>
>>174822023
I tried played Purifiers once myself. Their biggest issue is permanent -1000 relationship with every other empire, meaning instead of being warmongers themselves, the contrary happens and every single one of their neighbors declares war on them simultaneously. You'll be getting shitton of defensive wars from the start.

As a player you can easily work around this, but the AI can't handle being fucked from all angles.
>>
>>174822141
You're quite unlucky, my species has that trait but scientists rarely ever died.

They either need to somehow buff the AI for fanatical purifiers (maybe give them advanced starts by default) or fucking nerf the amount of Defensive pacts the AI make with each other.

Probably the latter since the AI is sooo damn eager to make defensive pacts that it literally brings the entire game to an almost permanent standstill

I would replace the L section on the cruiser with an M section, and have a Flak and a Kinetic instead. Cruisers being relatively forward, the flak will shred all fighters and missiles, and it together with the kinetic will help against enemy corvettes.

Sectors are absolutely fucking retarded and the cap in the first place feels like nothing more than a fun cap, I'd rather not be limited to 5 planets for a century while everybody else expands to every planet they can colonize and even then only moving it up 1 planet at a time just does not work for me. So is there a mod that just gets rid of it or puts it so ridiculously high you could never reach it?

When does "endgame" start? Is there a fixed date or does it depend on factions' technological progress?

Also, does the game just end when you reach the victory condition or does the crisis start when someone reaches the victory condition? Because there's this federation that's aligned with my ethos and are friendly towards me that controls a bunch of the galaxy, and I'm pretty sure if I join them it might be insta-GG from the territory controlled by all.

It wouldn't even be egalitarian of me to give my own species Utopian standards and have everyone else live in slums.

Mid- endgame is just term for slog once all the available space gets used and you just hole up if Pacifist, or otherwise expand through military.
Victory conditions are also completely separate from actual gameplay. Fulfilling one just results into receiving "YOU WIN" message and the game asks whether you want to continue playing or quit to main menu. That's it.

Crisis stuff I think depends on time / overall empire development / how big fleets normal empires start to field. Possible stuff is
>Fallen Empires Awakening: they start subjugating other empires in different ways depending on their ethos, if there's more than one and they have opposing ethos to each other it's likely they start a War in Heaven, forcing the rest of the galaxy to choose a side or try to stay independent
>3 mutually exclusive crises: AI rebellion (someone researched AI and uses synths) / Unbidden (someone researched and uses Jump Drive) / Prethoryn (no requirements); which one you get is random
>End of the Cycle: Special crisis if you take Psionic Ascendancy path, contact the Shroud, get a very small chance RNG event where you're offered MASSIVE bonuses to everything and have to pay the price after 50 years. Very rare and extremely difficult.

>>174828745
Authoritarian is better anyway, caste system is great and not needing to allow migration makes things a lot easier.
>>
>>174826792
There's no real hard definitions, but there's definite shifts in gameplay. Mid game is what people call the big slow down that happens after you explore all the nearby worlds and complete all the major event chains, encounter most of the factions and alien monsters etc. Basically when there's nothing left to do but gradually wait for your planets to fill up with pops and for research to complete. During the mid game, your only real actions are going to be occasionally building/upgrading something on a planet tile or waging wars against your neighbors. At this point you will control enough systems and have high enough resource income that you no longer have to focus on managing your resources and can just queue up mining/research stations and planetary buildings without much worry.

Late game is after a lot of the big research finishes, you have T4 and T5 techs, probably at least 1 or 2 steps down one of the major ascension paths if you opted for one. You will probably have jump drives at this point, and maybe have taken out a few of the leviathans.

Thank you for the replies

Three other questions

1. For Leviathan events such as the Dreadnought, should I wait to kill them until I have Jump Drives so that the recovered Dreadnought also has jump drives, or does that not matter?

2. Until how long can you play after the victory screen? Is it infinite?

3. Is 40 planets too wide for a science-focused empire? Should I gift/vassalize stuff? For my first Ascencion perk I went for +5 Core Systems because the sectors were fucking me over super bad and not doing anything right

I wish that the AI rebellion would get a buff. Terminator and the Matrix are some of my favorite movies. I still have the future war from the second renaissance from the animatrix burned into my head. The AI revolt is hyped up to be the worst crisis that could possibly happen given that fallen empires will wreck your shit for pursuing it. It's disappointing that is a minor annoyance at best. The worst thing about it is just no robotic workers but they hardly pose a threat to any empire. The second they appear they just get gangbanged by every surrounding empire. I dunno, I just wish they were more of a challenge b/c of all the hype leading up to them. Anyone else feel this way?

The AI revolt in SotS was good. You couldn't just block it by giving them rights. You needed a special tech to head off the rebellion. But if you didn't get it then the rebellion happens and you're fucked. They keep all your tech, take some of your ships and planets and are really fucking tough.

And nearly all of it to shields, barely anything actually damaged his ships' hulls. It doesn't matter if Corvettes can pump out damage if it can't penetrate shields and destroy enemy ships. That's why corvettes lose against cruisers and battleships, the big ships can just weather their tiny little guns easily and even if their weapons are slower and less accurate and there are fewer of them, they will eventually kill all the corvettes because their attack power will only grow weaker and weaker as more of them die while the strong ships will remain at full power.

Habitats are good too if you're including them with the rest of the megastructures.
>>
>>174848143
Yes, all the time. You shouldn't spam weak disposable ships against fleets full of powerful ships. Corvettes are meant to be support, they're not the core of your fleet. Destroyers can actually be the bulk of your fleet because they're so versatile, but they should be adapted to enemy fleet composition. Cruisers on the other hand you only need 1 or maybe 2 different designs for, they are the solid core of your fleet. Make them tanky, load them with your strongest weapons. They will melt down the enemy's big ships and shit all over their smaller ones too, but their strength is all-purpose and not really tooled to any specific strategy. That's what destroyers are for. If enemy is heavy on shields, design some destroyers to fight shields. If they have a lot of strike craft or missiles, design some picket destroyers. And so on. Destroyers are basically the escort for your cruisers. Battleships are a luxury, if you have the time to actually build up a good number of them they can be extremely formidable, but if you find yourself in need of more power very quickly, then cruisers are better. They are cheaper and build faster and still provide you with adequate muscle for taking on powerful fleets.

The only way I had any success against an AE was using multiple fleets to lock down as many of their planets at once as I could, dropping shitloads of clones onto each one to make it as difficult as possible for them to reclaim their production centers.

Even then, we're talking about 3/4 of the galaxy versus their 'empire' of about 12 systems. Fleet-to-fleet, I got rekt, I was basically just pumping out endless corvette fleets to keep their main fleets busy whilst others got behind them to target their infrastructure.

So, I plan to do an overhaul of my entire empire.

Ruul III isn't colonized yet, will likely be my mining planet once I kick out every fucking droid out of the habitable planets.

Thinking of making Alyvrra Prime my energy planet, since I need energy a lot, and it's empty.

Thinking of turning Mardom Prime and Pyrenus into research planets, since they are two ones with the most research tiles

Not sure what to do with Padjitauron Prime, it's a cornucopia but food is worthless, so don't know what to do.

Reagg Prime has no modifiers other than build cost, again don't know what to specialize it in.

As a fanatic materialist, is it worth it to turn your race into cyborgs?

I'm just about at that point.

Also later on you can quite literally transfer your minds into robot bodies right?
>>
>>174820546
Do people not realize how bad the AI in this game is? You can just build a defense station on top of your space port. The AI will suicide into it every time. You don't even need a fleet to win early wars.

Well I went for gene modding this run and holy shit is it the worst of the 3. Then again I went tall maybe it would had been better as a slaver super nation but if I did that I dont think I could practically afford the cost to change everyone.

But yeah, usually I get nothing in my home system and almost always surrounded by empires who hate me because they have the complete opposite ethics to me
Like for example I decided to try to do a materialist run with the intention of going full synth, Literally every other AI empire was Spiritualists, I was the only non-spiritualist in the entire galaxy not counting the fallen empires

God damn it. That was a meticulous scientist. I'd trade that for the crews of 10 science ships.
>>
>>174853167
>why 3-2-1 instead of 2-2-2
Because you need to produce more energy than your buildings and ships consume.
Mining and science planets are worthless if you can't power them and you still need to be producing an energy surplus.
Since you only have six planets you don't get as much of a result penalty so one science planet will do.
>>
>>174853305
Yeah, all your leaders get a neat little bonus from having a bunch of wires in their head.

I think it upsets spiritualists though, so if you've got biblebashing cosmic neighbours, take into account they might get pissed at you.

It'll be even harder for them to fix it now that synthetic ascension exists.

>buff the rebellion to be as terrifying as it should be

>players (rightly) start asking respectfully disagree-tier questions about why the AI revolt is fucking powerful and synthetic ascension is so shit

>eventually cave and buff synthetic ascension, only to have lads ask why biological ascension is so shit compared to synthetic/psionic ascension

>everything gets buffed to where every empire eventually turns into a walking end-game crisis, which makes the War in Heaven and actual crises pathetically easy to deal with

Best if they just redesigned it make the ai more numerous at the start.
>>

>>174847187
>The AI revolt in SotS was good. You couldn't just block it by giving them rights. You needed a special tech to head off the rebellion. But if you didn't get it then the rebellion happens and you're fucked.
This desu; it was always a huge decision whether you should pursue AI research or not because you could get fucked and get neither the AI virus or AI slaves.

You could mitigate the damage by not using any AI fire control on your ships (meaning they couldn't turn on you), but the AI would still get a fair few of your planets when the rebellion popped.

No, because that's not even remotely the same as comparing ascended synthetics to event-triggered ascended synthetics.

You can't. You need to completely depopulate it to 0 to abandon it. Then you can terraform it.

Otherwise get a mod that allows terraforming colonized planets.
>>
>>174855326
Why?
They have better bonuses to their leaders than cyborgs / Synths and they get to play in the shroud which gives them access to the best FTL method in the game, an alternative to the sentient combat AI ship computer which is better for certain roles, access to psi Shields with the same stats as enigmatic shields which may not be available if the enigmatic fortress did not spawn or is unreachable and the ability to spawn Shroud Avatars which are either 15K power ships or the most powerful ground army in the game.

There's also the various boons and covenants.

Psionics are really great.
>>
>>174855742
>I own 4 planets and 3 habitats
You own 7 planets, thats not tall.

5 or less is tall. Hell the tallest would be 1 planet and you could get away with it too if you used enough border range and frontier outposts.

If you cant afford the bio trait modifications due to all your pops, you're not playing tall or you've got absolutely rubbish research rate.

A lot of the ships have design problems
Molluscoid gunboat hull has a couple turrets that are flat useless.
>>
>>174862447
Ships need to be overhauled from the top down. First order of business is putting turrets in logical places where they won't shoot into each-other. Second order is to make turrets actually change depending on what they are.
>>
>>174862447
I don't play Stellaris, what's the problem here?

>>
>>174862580
>>174862593
Agreed. They need to go back to the old system without having specialist slots for PD and Torpedoes as well.

Small slots for PD, Medium for Torps, ezpz.
Or, better yet, make PD and Torpedoes into "auxiliary" weapons that can be slotted into the Auxiliary slots.

They should also just put in every combination of slot size there can be for that segment; I'm sure their modelers need the work.

There should be civics for starting as cyborgs, latent psychics or having access to the bio ascension techs.
I mean the game starts in 2200, the technology for a society of cyborgs or the means of playing god with biology aren't too far fetched for the year and there's tonnes of settings and stories where those technologies are available before FTL travel.
Psionics is a natural ability so the year shouldn't matter.

Obviously there would need to be some way to balance it but it would be fun.

Anyone use 50% habitable worlds or lower in their Stellaris games? More fun? Less fun? More difficult? Less difficult?

I'm suspecting that it makes the start and finish more difficult, but easier in the middle. Early game because AI is good at rushing for planets and expanding, and late game because less ships for crisis. Compared to a somewhat easier time in the interim because the AI will hit a wall where they can't expand anymore.

Would that be about right?

I mean, that fleet has been almost completely obliterated, but still. They were attacking planets, but I was hoping they'd be more proactive about the anchors so it'd take a while to uproot them.

Worst part is that I'd already built about a hundred ships with the anti-Unbidden designs and those are all going to suck ass against conventional empires.

Honestly, at this point I think is better to drop the pretense AI Rebelion is at the same level as the Unbidden or the Scourge.
Make it a Empire crisis instead of a galactic one. With massive revolts in you Empire, the machines create their own Empire. Can actually have relations with other Empires and just want to liberate all the machines in the galaxy instead of "PURGE ORGANICS".

With what to remplace them as a endgame crisis? Thats up in the air, but may as well copypaste The Reapers/Necrons and have them create more fleets by consuming Pops from worlds.

Clearly when their ships get into orbit they purge bomb it from orbit. It'd make them 10 times deadlier than other AIs that take 50 years to conquer a world because Charlie forgot to bring drop pods

So your options are to become the green vassal and fight black, fight green and lose all but one world (TALL mode), pray for memetoads, or die.

It goes without saying that both ur quan factions are fanatic xenophobes. Partially because of their solitary nature, but mostly due to a bad history with other species.

So how do we fix megastructres? I just did a full game were I made making them the focus. Habitats were good maybe even so far as OP but the rest are novel at best. The main problem is they take far to much time and resources to get going and by the time you do its after the end game crisis. On the flip being able to make a dyson sphere in 2250 would be broken. Im actually stumped they are cool but functional worthless. One cool thing that could be done is after making one or two set you down an event trail to becoming a future Ancient empire maybe even make it a potential victory condition. Imagine that a victory that isnt purely based on conquest but on leaving your mark on the galaxy.

I'm currently experimenting with some mods to buff them. Current one seems a little obscene and reduces build time, but not cost, by about 40% and ups the yields from dyson spheres to 1.2k and the science nexus to 500.

So far I feel like the build time part is busted although they could do with being a little shorter than vanilla and the nexus gives way to much science holy shit. But the idea is alright, they mostly just need a fuck huge numbers buff to make them actually mega. Fuck I've had a planet with assist research on it that game more research than a nexus.

Thats paradox for you every patch they ever release brakes the game and you have to wait a month for them to work it out And even then they never do. My favorite of them all was the art of war DLC for EU4. When it came out if you conquered practically any land you would get a revolt after 2 or 3 years. Sounds reasonable right? Well early game you can within reason field an army no more then 15-20k. The rebels would spawn in doomstacks of 40k+ and would be as good if not better then your units. Fun times fun times.
>>174876875
>>174876895

You guys suck at balance. All you need for megastructures is a way to make the first handful really cheap and easy to get (such as the galaxy is already littered with half built ruins). That makes the tech worthwhile.
