Wormholes are fine on smaller galaxies because you can micromanage the building of wormhole stations so it doesn't fuck your early exploration so hard.

On larger galaxies it's just not possible without some form of autism for micromanagement.

Be xenophile and a charismatic species so your conquered ayys are actually happy about the whole thing.

Don't build battleships they're not cost effective for what they do, bulk of your fleet should be cruisers with M slots full of plasma and one L slot with kinetic artillery, backed up by some cruisers with flak guns if you're against frigate/strikecraft spammers.

Adjust your tank to either mainly shields or mainly armor depending on your enemy's prefered weapons.

Only early game. Late game, high-level shield regen and high armor/HP means that corvettes just can't take or dish out enough punishment to tangle with massed cruisers/battleships with all the flak/strikecraft and accurate M slot fire that it involves.

I consoled myself a fleet of about 800 top-tier corvettes to see if I could take an FE fleet that was 10k strength below it, and it just got shredded, took out about four of their battlecruisers.

Yeah, but you don't need multiple flak guns. It's so deadly against strikecraft, one per cruiser is fine. Anything over that and you'll just massively overkill the strikecraft, then be left with mediocre dps against the rest of the fleet.

Welp im bored so im gonna call the game here. Its 2400 the Unbidden havent done jack shit all game just sitting there chillin. Humans are the largest species in the galaxy by a massive margin with 2nd place having about 150 pops. I conquered one ancient empire and took all of their ring worlds but the real prize was the salvage which gave me like 6 techs free. A fun fact of my game I found funny was the planet mojave when I colonized it was a desert planet then right after I got an event that terraformed it into a gaia world. Anyone else wanna see anything about my game before I close it and study for the next 3 days straight?

hull regen becomes godly late-game when you can stack multiple repeating hull HP techs. Then the hp-regen becomes noticable and you end up with essentially free shields.

That said, plasma is very common amongst the AI so going without shields completely is still a bad idea.

tl;dr it can be useful late-late-game, particularly with living metal, but not so much the rest of the time given your limited A slots.

X slots are great, but you can only mount them on battleships, which means you'll lose battleships to return X fire.

Everything else doesn't tend to suffer to much, X turrets struggle to hit even cruisers once their engines are upgraded enough.

If you haven't brought battleships, a lot of your enemy's X slot damage will be wasted and likewise, a lot of your X slot damage will get wasted unless your opponent is spamming battleships.

Battleships are really expensive and slow to build too, more so than the equivilent strength in cruisers, which doesn't help.

They spawned like 2260ish they annexed the nation they spawned in then did nothing the rest of the game. I shit my pants the first genocide I committed and knocked everyone down to -200 relations thinking they were all gonna gang up on me all they did was close borders. Like really there is an empire that enslaves or genocides sentient life and conquers a quarter of the galaxy and all you do is close borders. Same thing with the unbiddened I was nervous they would snowball out of control and would eat me. Never did. I could conquer the galaxy but I feel that would be beyond boring I could also wait 15 years for mega structures tech to finish then wait another 20 to build a Dyson sphere but meh. At this point speed is like 4 days a second so im losing my mind. This was my first real game and I gotta say the best part was the end of early game. When I was in small scale wars and still exploring. Next game I do im gonna try and federate I guess I have a feeling this game may become samey after awile.

I've been using this mod https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/776095610 it seems like such a minor little thing, but the extra power this gives ships gives battleships a significantly larger boost than other ship classes and makes them veritable juggernauts of tank, enough to make them actually worth using since they get a proportionally larger boost from freeing up utility slots since they're all L slots. It's a pretty good mod, would recommend. They're still a fair bit more expensive than cruisers but their combat capability has gone up relative to cruisers too so it kinda balances out.

RNG damage, balances out over time but even on average their damage is pretty meh taking a month to kill a corvette more often than not. XL mounts also suck since they have a limited firing arc unlike regular turret slots so they become more vulnerable to swarms and being attacked from behind by a fleet warping in.

I'm kinda new to 4x games, so fair warning...

How much should I be concentrating on creating new colonies, and is there such a thing as overextending yourself? I'm on a small map, and it seems like there are 2/3 planets a few jumps from my homeworld and a maybe 3/4 more that are further away - is it better to focus on far away colonies so my empire covers more ground, even though the growth is "spotty" and not contiguous, or am I setting myself up to be chaos dunked if I do that for being stretched too thin?

Also, what's the deal with the number of planets? I've seen screenshots of this game, with tons and tons of colonies and uncolonized planets, all forming a big blob, but in my game there seem to only be these very few planets.

I tested for you and other memers.

Numbers might look odd but allow for explain;

Once enemy fleet was down to roughly 50% of starting numbers, slightly over 150 basic corvettes, it lost the ability to penetrate the shield tank on the surviving cruisers, even though they were using kinetics. The cruiser's shields blocked all incoming damage and it simply became a mop-up operation resulting in the enemy's loss 150+ corvettes (costing about 65 minerals each so about 9,800 minerals) with not a single cruiser destroyed in return. This despite cruisers be generic and no specialise for corvette removal.

One cruiser was lost prior to the corvette fleet losing a critical number of ships, and cruisers likely would have lost many more, you can't see from the pic but around the time the corvette fleet's dps started to drop off and was rendered unable to penetrate cruiser shields anymore, over half of cruisers were into 20% health or lower. Corvettes may have achieved victory if they had another 50-75 corvettes, but that was not test.

The problem with the corvettes is they started losing ships at a rate of 2 or more per second (on high speed) from the very beginning of the fight, and each ship loss decreased their DPS, until eventually they didn't have enough to hurt the cruisers.

By comparison, the cruisers absorbed a huge amount of damage on their regenerating shields, and would have only started to lose DPS significantly very late in the battle, but by that point, their undiminished DPS had destroyed enough of the enemy fleet to render them ineffective and essentially a firepower kill, followed by a k-kill (due to me removing the corvette's FTL capability so they coudn't withdraw)

I removed the corvette fleet's FTL because they kept performing an emergency FTL as soon as engaged, even though their fleet strength was higher than the cruiser fleet's intially.

Even AI does not fall for 'Basic Cruiser Spam > Everything' meme.

If it is 100% NOT a holy world, then you might get the "that planet is too close to our borders" but telling them to fuck off won't always lead to an immediate war.

I took a non-holy world right next to a FE Guardian empire in my last game, colonised it, got the "please remove this colony it's too close to us", I told them no and they just went :< down to -90, but they never declared war on me.

It let me take another 6 or so planets with the borders but they never said anything else.

But as I said, also non-optimised for the fleet it was facing. In reality, AI cannot produce 300+ corvettes quicker than you can refit cruisers, so you're never going to deploy cruisers with a wasted kinetic artillery in a real scenario.

Against an actually fleet, with destroyers and strikecraft, the results would be even worse.

Sure, if you're only goal is to create a fleet-in-being to ward off attack, it's marginally cheaper to maintain (but swallows a massive amount of fleetcap, 300 to the cruiser fleet's 80) but then the problem is that if your bluff is ever called, you have a bunch of nearly-useless corvettes hogging all your fleet cap, so you either need to delete or go massively over-fleet cap, which makes maintenance costs ruinously expensive.

Plus it's far quicker to mass produce a bunch of corvettes to bulk out an existing fleet of battleships and cruisers, rather than the other way around.

Best choices for someone NOT going for a specific ascendance path are imo:

1) Mastery Of Nature
2) Border Range
3) Research Boost
4) Damage to FE's.

With the Border Range Tradition, plus the Supremacy Starting Bonus and the Galactic Ambition Technology you can end up with +65% Border Range. It is fucking crazy, you will end up pushing opposing empires right back.

Some games if I can tell I'm about to lose an early war I stop because I know I'll have no hope of a comeback. I'll lose the war, which will annex or liberate most of what few planets I have left, and 10 years later that empire will come back to finish the job if someone else hasn't.

I have won a few "domination" victories with the 40% win condition, mostly as extremely adaptive races that can just balloon into massive empires.

I however only stop playing once I've killed whatever end game crisis has shown up and beaten the fallen empires. By that time whatever regular empires are left have no chance to defeat me.

I CBF painting the whole galaxy my colour as doing so will just be boring busywork of sending my fleets & armies over and over again with no challenge until I've annexed them all.

Your boarders expand faster than you can survey them so you always have a frontier to discover and settle without having to fight a war for it. Yeah that's pretty agreeable. If I get dec'd within the first 10 years by a superior power and their war goals are my total annihilation I call it once my fleet is trashed. I can't come back from that and even if I won a white peace some other empire would dec me right afterward. To be fair about the map painting though, you could use the expansion planner to just queue up a bunch of ships and not have to actually move fleets around yourself, as far as colonizing goes. War is a huge bitch though with a lack of ability to make patrols.

The other empire offered you the chance to join in on the war, and the "carrot" for you to join is the wargoal.
