Reposting all of it since it's been a few threads

It's been five months since the 53rd killing game happened. The first few weeks, the trio had to constantly look over their shoulder, spending their days fleeing from TDR and civilization in general. It wasn't until recently that they found an abandoned cottage in a secluded forest, after months of living off collecting berries and hunting small game. The survivors swore to always stick together in this world, not like they had any other choice. They were basically fictional characters stuck in the real world, not to mention the huge target on their back for disrupting the peace of today's society. Honestly, Maki was doing most of the work, she did all the hunting and most of the other chores requiring athletic ability, so it wasn't surprising for Himiko to find her lying in her bed at noon. The magician was about to close to the door to the dimmed room when she realized quiet noises coming from the supposedly sleeping assassin. Harukawa was emitting faint gasps while whispering a certain astronaut's name and squirming slightly in her sheets. Slightly startled, Himiko started to quietly walk away and leave the other girl to herself. Apparently, she wasn't quiet enough as Maki shot up and asked, "W-who's there?".

To quote two examples, Kaito knowing Hoshi even before this killing game as someone who used to play tennis and Shirogane commenting that nothing seems to have happened to her when the final Remembering Light is used may be important.

This is true as far as his previous two games and DR3 show, but isn't the truth something that can change over time? I don't actually expect him to go full 1984 at least where 'Big Brother' eventually wins, but considering that the new theme is truth and lies it's not impossible that a lot of psychological tricks will be used.

Honestly, I think there's a difference between saying Kiibo is underwhelming and saying he's not a good character. He is well-written and provides a balanced point of view that's sorely needed at tense moments such as when Kaito punched Ouma, but it's undeniable he just doesn't have too much of a presence until chapter 6.

Don't get me wrong, Kiibo's not so bad compared to the likes of Kaede "ITRUSTEVERYONEBUTTIMETOTHROWBALL" Akamatsu or Angie "Literally Most Shallow Character Ever In DR" Yonaga, but...he's like an observer and comic relief in trials.
He just feels REALLY underwhelming compared to the rest of the people in Chapter 5 (except Tsumugi, fuck her), and he feels like more of a plot device comparable to Amami even in Chapter 6. I feel it would have been more tolerable if he was given the observer spot instead of the Monokumaz.

He was a supportive friend and his desire to want to be seen as human was nice but he got treated as comic relief and suddenly became relevant at the end being revealed as a twitch bot and having no character development throughout the whole six chapters he's in. It can sour a lot of people's opinions on him. And yeah, I agree. He should have been an observer instead of a participant.

Toujou got the Peko 2.0. treatment.
Angie deserved it.
Tulpaman had the most satisfying death in the series.
Miu brought it upon herself.
Gonta was way too expected and I just didn't care for him.
Ouma's death was his redemption.
Tsumugi deserved it.
Kiibo for reasons stated above.

I still like the characters this time around but their deaths were either brought upon themselves or they weren't established enough to care for.

Yep. Even the deaths I did sympathise with were either redemption arcs or they brought it upon themselves. Kaito and Tenko were the only ones that did nothing wrong. I'd argue it makes me like some characters more but the point still stands.

At least Kaito knew that he was going to die and made it suitably awesome.
Meanwhile Tenko's was fucking cheap and a way to fill up the deaths of Chapter 3 while pushing Himiko's character development.
Then again people wouldn't have hated Korekiyo as much if she didn't die because he killed a admirable girl who JUST happened to be a cult leader.

Going further with the Umineko parallels, what seems like a convoluted mystery involving witches at first is actually fully solvable just from some out of the 8 games, but the magic part of the mystery isn't a lie either because if you don't get why those fantasies exist you won't understand the truth either.

In other words, Kodaka's tweet about going to replay the prologue should be his guarantee that you can certainly find solid proof towards your answer in there. Whether your conclusion is that it's all fiction or not fiction is one thing, but there's no such thing as saying none of it makes any sense.

This is the case for me for a lot of characters. Tenko, Angie, Kaede, Kaito, Kiibo and Gonta were the ones I felt bad for on first playthrough, mainly because translations were still unclear. It's not until I learnt more about Iruma, Hoshi, Ouma and Amami that I felt sympathy with their characters(despite three of those four bringing it upon themselves). Translations clearing up also made me feel much less sympathy for Angie and Kaede.

Wow, I feel bad for you. I'd probably go down the same hill since I loved Kirumi so much pre-release and once she died, I probably would have spent time with Tenko instead.
