It just didn't know where it was going in Y1. Every expansion after has added a little bit here and there, but besides the Grimoire (which is not viewable in-game REEEEEEEEEEEEEE) the story is still pretty vague.

It wasn't just you. The drops were abyssmal when CD first came out. So much so that people started complaining. Some guy livestreamed like 12 or 24 hours straight of CD and didn't even get one shell.
