I'm a new player be nice.
I normally embark with very low history, high beasts and high savagery and I try to embark on savannas and by oceans.
But what should I do if I want plenty of various wild creatures and visitors?

Rimworld felt uncomplete in my opinion, I played it for a day and when the last tech of the tree was done I felt like I had completed the game. There was nothing more to do in it, all the random shit had already spawned and now I was just dragging it out before leaving the planet.

Note that there is a reason why it has the crappy little edge oceans: it forces the elevation grid to plop the mountains in the middle together and cut them up with erosion/rivers/lakes instead of trying to spread them out more.

Haven't touched this for a couple years now, because various things got too frustrating, namely UI, controls and hacks too buggy.
Have there been any improvements to those since then?

Fun game but too wimpy to get used to the ascii art, shit gets so confusing when you don't know what the majority of it represents and always feels obnoxious having to look it up etc. The art is a design choice and it's perfectly valid, the controls on the other hand felt completely arbitrary and made no sense. The problem there, similar to the art in that it's confusing and creates a lot of overhead in the learning curve but what really makes it annoying is that the design of the controls don't really feel like they contribute to anything unlike the art does, like it's made purely to be a pain in the ass to use.
Then comes the hacks to sooth those issues and of course they make the game unstable and buggy as all hell. Swear I'd use the most minimal setup and lightweight components and the game would still shit itself with memory leaks, random freezes and what not.

Oh well I digress, carry on my dorf bros
>>
>>174572719
They controls are that way because they are being used to control systems that were implemented at different points over a long period of time. Like 15 years in fact.

And FPS death is representative of the heat death of the universe. Or so I tell myself.

use macros, my guy. they're built right into the game, no external applications needed

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Macros_and_Keymaps

i typically make a few circle macros and a 3x3 bedroom w/ doorway macro, and some workshop layout macros as well

the trick of course is not letting your macros control you instead of you controlling your macros

Next update is going to really make the game more interesting by adding in quests on the world map with randomly generated assets and map pieces. Maybe it's a big pile of weapons with a horde of wild animals? Perhaps you're saving some colonists trapped behind a line of abandoned but functional turrets? At least, that's what they are promising. I feel like the game is surviving on the mod community like Skyrim did, though the simple graphics make it much easier to mod.

But they cut you off from the outside, prevent diplomats and visitors from leaving causing sour relations, and, if it is trading season, will stop the traders coming.

It is in your best interest to try and engage them, kill a few, and possibly rout them.

You just need some clever traps and siege engines.

Fortress planning was more than a cosmetic thing. Dwarves couldn't just travel a few tiles to get all their work done. The map restricted your defensive options (outside of gimmicky stuff like magma cannons). It was harder to train up good soldiers. You were guaranteed a cave river, chasm, and magma river, all of which were difficult to utilize without exposing the middle of your fort to danger. Random floods. Cave ins restricting room size. Farming was less productive by a lot. More nobles to support, many of which did no work at all.

I think that about covers it.

Oh, there was also the economy. Dwarves eventually needed to pay for things so you couldn't just give them all awesome stuff to keep them distracted from their rotting relatives. But IIRC it was easy to short circuit by just never minting any coins.
>>

I can't wait for the return of economy. I want my dwarves to earn the nice houses I make, not just get them by being there first.

>Fortress planning was more than a cosmetic thing
It still is.
>Dwarves couldn't just travel a few tiles to get all their work done.
You have to design your fort in a very specific way for that to be the case.
>Map restricted your defensive options.
Still does. The most effective defensive strategy now was also the most effective defensive strategy then.
>harder to train up good soldiers
It wasn't. You just had to use training weapons, which was a trivial limitation.
>...all of which were difficult to utilize without exposing...
Walls and bridges were as perfectly effective then as they are now. The chasm was kind of hard to incorporate into your fort, but there wasn't any use for it anyway except garbage disposal. The river and magma were easier than the equivalent features in 3d.
>Caveins restricted room size
Having to leave support every 15 or so tiles is hardly a restriction. Most people who post structures that big do it anyway just for aesthetics.
>Random floods.
They weren't random. They happened at the same time and place annually.
>Farming was less productive
It wasn't. Underground plants had the same yields they do now. You had to irrigate annually, which was easy after the first time. Especially if you used the annual flood to do it.
>More nobles
I'll give you that one.

DF has always been easy. This "remember when DF was hard" meme is just romanticism. We were all new once, and the game looked harder to us then. But fact is, the hardest things in DF now are way harder than the hardest things that existed before they were implemented. i.e. demons, angels, FBs and titans are all more potentially dangerous than anything 2d could throw at you. And while the biggest noob issue then was getting dirt wet once a year, now it's having your fort explode into a cascading werebeast massacre, or actually catastrophic floods. Of course if you're good at DF all that is trivial, just like the supposed difficulty of 2d was trivial if you were good then.

2d didn't have training weapons.

You couldn't wall off the bridges the way you could now. I don't think there was even a construction menu like we have now.

>Having to leave support every 15 or so tiles is hardly a restriction.
10.

>They weren't random. They happened at the same time and place annually.
Semi random.

>It wasn't. Underground plants had the same yields they do now.
More seasonal restrictions.

>Especially if you used the annual flood to do it.
Easy way to get a bunch of dwarfs killed.

DF was harder in 2d, albeit the difference is less now than it was immediately after the shift to 3d when you could farm whatever in any season and the cavern update and medical stuff hadn't happened. Hopefully these are signs that Toady is going to continue add more challenges because the initial 3d update was pretty damn boring. It took a long time to get to where we are now.

Now shut up about stuff you didn't play.

There are still four unresolved expedition issues, but then hopefully we can get started on fort artifact diplomacy!

Ok, wooden weapons. That's splitting hairs. Avoiding sparring injuries was really easy, and strong soldiers were even more OP then than they are now thanks to uncapped attrubutes.

>bridges
Bridges formed an impassable barrier then as well.

>more seasonal restrictions
There weren't.

>Easy way to get dwarves killed.
Irrigating now is an easy way to get dwarves killed if you're bad. Same as it ever was.

>>174611002
Didn't say constructed walls. You don't have to dig out every single wall between you and whatever you want to keep out of your fort.
The adamantine mining end was just an arbitrary game over screen, that's not the same thing as difficulty. You could avoid it indefinitely by not mining adamantine.
>>
>>174612542
>Ok, wooden weapons.
Anon...
>>
>>174612542
>Damn, I'm stuck in this hole. I better dig deeper to get out.

No wooden weapons. Bridges were only impassable if raised up, like now. But relying on that meant living in a single layer or being content to periodically cut your fort in two. Interesting strategic compromises, in my DF?! And you're just flat out wrong about the crops, dude. Still haven't addressed the economy, the lack of pressure plates, less trap variety, greater wood scarcity....etc. Of course there were things to offset some of this. Cheesy stuff like killing all nobles just like now, or some things we don't have now, like the magma gun or just not minting coins to avoid the economy. And crossbows were basically uzis back then. But it still adds up to being more difficult than the game is now.

>Irrigating now is an easy way to get dwarves killed if you're bad. Same as it ever was.
>It's not an easy game guys, I'm just awesome at it

2d DF had INFINITE flooding. That's almost impossible to do now, especially by accident.

So what's your DF wishlist?

Mine:
>mounts for dwarves
>implement wagons as something usable for your fortress
>BOATS
>fuel powered minecart trains
>MULTIPLE TILE MINECARTS, like wagons but on tracks
>multiple tile beasts if they're above a certain size

Basically I just want more BIG things that actually look big on-screen. Also, I think more things should span z - levels - raising a bridge underground should require you to dig out the area above it, mounted people + wagons should take up 2-3 z levels depending on the size of the mount, etc

Also
> the glorious return of the economy
>more challenging stress system so that unhappy dwarves create a risk of becoming rioters/revolutionaries
>creatures that are also capable of mining / destroying tiles so that you can't just wall yourself in a dirt hole with some wood and a farm plot and be ok (like a giant underground worm beast) and stronger materials take longer for him to mine through, giving you incentive to build STRONG fortifications

Upright spikes are the only trap type that wasn't present then, and it requires dwarf power or engineered automation and proper timing. All of the set it and forget traps were in 2d.

Sure, there was that. Easy magma access at literally every site was a thing, though.

It's easy to get that accidentally now. Any aquifer, river, brook, stream can do it. The unending flood is the classic "how I lost my 3rd fort" story, it's practically a meme at this point.

From devlist and eternal suggestions:
>Adventure role Treasure Hunter (finding ruins etc)
>Adventurer Role: Explorer
>Improved Farming
>Improved Mechanics
>making the menus more consistent, adding graphs to the stocks screen, improving a few other screens
Having a dynamically simulated world economy would also be very nice.

Not on dev list or not planned as far as I know:
>improved worldgen (plate tectonics, better mountains)
>longer history simulating the rise and fall of several civilizations (doesn't matter if it's more abstract) - see also above: "finding ruins"
Basically, instead of
>Myth generation>world generation>500 years history
Something like:
>Myth generation>better world gen>100 000 years abstract history with less detail> 500 years history

Conversely, I really don't care about Boats, magic, astral planes, and actively going to war (i.e. invading other sites).
Although the boats and war have very important implications that I do care about: economy and diplomacy - more contact with the world.

In short, I want to do more independent (without quest) exploring in Adventure mode, and more engineering in fortress mode - all in the frame of a very active world.

there's a fairly massive mountain in the middle of the otherwise perfectly flat lands which goes up with the steepest possible slopes everywhere, but the volcano itself is not located on the mountain but rather in the middle of the flat snowy desert so at the very least I won't have to worry about accidental magma floods

Whining about about no going-back-into-worldgen is childish.

Toady has explained very clearly why it's impossible. Worldgen simply uses a completely different level of abstraction than any other game mode. Once you start playing in a world, it becomes too complex to send back into worldgen.
>>
>>174637770

AKA it's possible but toady the godly programmer never planned it for it so it would require a rewrite

Didn't he already implement calendar progressing when he did the "Activate the World" update?
All he needs to do is give us the control over how long we want to simulate the world (in main menu and adventure mode) instead of the two weeks it does now.
Would be 100x slower than normal worldgen ofc, but still faster than progressing it by overseeing a fortress.
>>
>>174637593
The only way I know of is with linked stockpiles or restricting access via locked doors or burrows or forbidding (and I don't generally use burrows so I'm not sure if they work).
>>
>>174638664
Some of the worldgen exclusive events wouldn't happen, but otherwise it's perfectly valid.
You can already control the length of calendar progressing with DFHack.

If you really tested it in the arena then your tests were flawed in some way. The combat formulae are known, and increasing weapon weight only increases attack momentum. The time it takes to make an attack is defined in the raws by weapon and doesn't check material at all. The only thing it can slow down is the wielder's movement speed.

No, the first guy was right. The game doesn't operate on restrictions, but allowances. The ability to do just about anything has to be explicitly defined in the entity raws. The items they can make, workshops they can build, professions they can have, materials they can use, and reactions they know are all set forth in entity_default. If you were to just add the tag to make them playable in fort mode you wouldn't even be able to chop down a tree.

It's not that hard to suss out. Look at the dwarf and kobold entities side by side, copypaste as necessary. The wiki has really good documentation on entity tokens, so you can look things up that you're unsure about. Even going in with no raw modding knowledge you'll probably have an acceptably fort modeable kobold entity inside an hour.
>>
>>174662982
Alright, I guess it can't be that bad. I'll make an attempt when my human fort fails.
>>
>>174661878
Raw editing can be fun, anon. I for one play vanilla mostly but I have another modded df in a separate folder. I've added a few races and several weapons but, every now and then I'll Crack open the modded toys raw and one or two toys to the list. There's nothing quite as satisfying as throwing a lead die through the skull of an enemy.

A friend and I were discussing making dorf fort in the SS13 engine and how it would be the most horrible game ever made.

I can just imaging the quartermaster trading away everything but the booze for a microline studded, slade spiked steel anvil.

The planter getting beaten to death with a bucket because he gelded all the caretaker's animals after the caretaker used his pig tail seeds for pig feed.

The miners and engineers built a magma piston and started a cult because they thought they were going to get to fuck mother earth and started engraving dicks on it.

The metalsmith managed to set himself on fire while using the magma forge and decided to walk into the stores to get a drink.

The cheesemaker got bored, bribed the expedition leader with a barrel of cheese for a pick and then snuck down and activated the HFS so he could come back as something more interesting next round. The admin punishes him by bringing him back as an elf liason and the moment the E word is uttered in the fortress, everyone drops tools and runs out to bash him to death.

Sounds like !!FUN!! to me.

Magical materials>Steel>Bronze=Iron>Copper>silver>the rest

There are 3 types of weapons, bashy, slashy, and stabby

Stabby weapons are great at puncturing creatures and causing wounds, BUT they have a likelihood of getting stuck in your opponents. Pulling out a weapon costs a turn. This can mean death.

Slashy weapons lop off limbs and are ok against most opponents. Weak against armor, though.

Bashy weapons are great against armored opponents but suffer against big motherfuckers like Megabeasts.

I don't think anon meant what you think he meant by magical. There are metals that have material properties that don't exist in the real world, which is presumably the ones he was referring to.
As far as "stabby" and "slashy" go, that's more a question of the weapon than the material, and they're really the same thing anyway. Weapons will either do blunt or edge damage, and the edge weapons all have an armor penetration value to account for. Some people make a distinction between piercing and cutting weapons, buts its really just a question of the attack's contact area and penetration value. There aren't any weapons that are just "slashy" or "stabby". The weapons page linked before has more info on the subject, but if you're using modded weapons you'll want to look at the raws for them.

Even if you do they still react that way. Rumor/reputation system is kind of broken right now. NPCs know that they want you to kill a dude, but don't have any personal negative feelings about them, so they see you as a murderer when you do it. They know the king was a vampire and they know that you killed him, but those two pieces of information don't connect in a meaningful way when they decide how they feel about you.

How much meaning do the attributes (in adventure mode) have when you're a werebeast?
Because I saved the game at a holy statue hours before full moon. So I'm currently toppling to find out in what cool werebeasts I can become.

I'm currently a were bear and it seems to hit pretty hard (crushing spines&skulls. also proppeling an anaconda away with the force), but the attributes seem pretty shit. I normally have "Supergoblin strength". Do I now have average strength for a goblin or for a giant fucking bear.

(I think I had high strength as a werezebra)
>>
>>174713396
Nice, my militia of unskilled workers should have some really high skill after machine gunning these invaders, considering everything either misses or gets blocked.

I also assume distance to target reduces accuracy.

It's something like 10 tiles. At max range highly skilled archers are more likely to miss than shitty ones because their shots are perfectly accurate and the target gets to move before the bolt gets to them. It depends on the speed of the creature, but 10-12 tiles is usually enough for skilled archers to get a couple of shots off without the target getting a chance to move out of the way.

>>
>>174731701
>leap away from a tileset,
Everyone uses a tileset (unless you set the init to TEXT MODE), even the default graphics are a tileset.

Also, the True Type font is entirely independent from the tileset you use (and so is the color scheme by the way).

Are you using TWBT? Did you install DF through some starter pack variant?
As others have mentioned, it also might be that you want to disable some features from TWBT if you use that.

Really, I would suggest to drop TWBT, or at least read about the features it provides, so you understand where to look when you encounter unintended phenomena.

I think 3 levels is the minimum for anything to grow. But you also have to wait (3? I think thats trees, maybe mushrooms are better) years for anything to grow. And you shouldn't let dwarf or animals walk over it, since they trample the mushrooms

It means it can be used as part of a multiattack without a severe accuracy hit, figured it fit the zangetsu style, light, sharp, good at grab/slash or dodge/slash or slash/tackle type of fighting vs the buster sword SMASH ALL THE THINGS stats.

Think the buster weighed like 96 urists like that, zangetsu was like 28, but that was with modded metals, forget which one was closest to normal steel actually.

Here's the min-mod wrought iron/mild steel/spring steel/dwarven steel+reactions/etc stuff I posted a couple threads back which is where the metals came from: https://pastebin.com/DBF0uyFd

Does anyone know if seiges take into account the direction from which invaders will come?
All the goblins are in the southern end of the map, and the other races are in the north, so I wanted to build a wall to keep them out, but I don't know if it'll just random teleport goblins to the other side.

you could build an enormously long wall all the way around, with a draw bridge so you could pick and choose who comes into you fort

I mean, kinda, but if there are enough units when they load onto the screen they'll just kinda pile up on the edge anyways.

I used to make use of that when I'd send out my buffed-adventurer-solo-military-dorf against the yearly zombie mashup. I depleted the western tower fast so after that I only got sieges from the towers to the east and southeast.

They'll get bored and leave eventually, though zombie sieges are assholes, it's why I ended up with the zokunokab there in that gif. First year at the fort they showed up with like 20 dorfs so far. I sealed the gate and started training/preparing for them to leave, but they just ran around kicking wildlife for a year until I finally grabbed the most skilled dorf and took control of them as an adventurer, then climbed outside and bashed skulls before heading off to get famous and buffed up.

Dropped her back off at the fort later and when the zombies showed up I sent her out to dive into the pile of undead and start bashing away, which was nerve-wracking at first. I can literally kill thousands of foes when I'm controlling a buffed up adventurer, np, but I was a bit scared of letting the AI try it with just a hundred zombies.

She did great though, started looking forward to watching the heads flying across the screen after that.

Dealing with a goblin siege that's a little too large for comfort at the moment. All dwarves are safely tucked away behind a drawbridge and a moat, but I have some questions:

>Will ignoring sieges (i.e., refusing to interact with goblins at all until they run away) cause the goblins to siege less and less? I'm still somewhat dependent on goblinite.

>Are "chokepoints" particularly useful in dwarf fortress? Most of my soldiers are probably far superior to goblin soldiers, both in equipment and skill, but I'm wondering if my dwarves are smart enough to be able to switch out lines upon becoming injured. I ask because I could let the goblins in a single file line into the fortress, but I'm worried I'd still get overrun.
>>
>>174766818
>if my dwarves are smart enough to be able to switch out lines upon becoming injured
m8 dwarfs are 1 neuron above using their own limbs as weapons.
Strict combat positioning would be amazing however it would also mean either making the game even more easier or meaning Goblins would also use actual it.
>>
>>174767043
actually i feel kind of dumb as i posted that because obviously i could just reposition them myself. they'll probably move slowly / dumbly but it should work, as long as I don't have to be too precise (which I shouldn't)
>>
>>174767179
It won't work. They take the position as a vague suggestion and run off in berserk mode regardless as soon as they see an enemy.
>>
>>174767179
Here's how I position dwarfs
1. Build several towers in front of the entrance that are 4z level high with roofs connected via underground tunnels
2. Have 50-70 marksmen & 30-40 melee
3. Send in melee in only once the enemy in between the entrance and the closest tower
Make sure your towers have roofs or your dwarfs will literally torpedo themselves into groups of enemies.
>>
>>174767238
i suppose it's a good thing that i'm a coward then. steel is a fine material, but 20 steel equipped dwarves would probably succumb eventually to 110 goblins and trolls, even if they did have the choke point to help them make it one-on-one
>>
>>174767652
>but 20 steel equipped dwarves would probably succumb eventually to 110 goblins and trolls, even if they did have the choke point to help them make it one-on-one
If they're healthy and well skilled and the choke point is pretty narrow, they'll go through them liike ab lender. Especially if chopped up by traps and marksmen first. Keep in mind the goblins will run if a bunch of them die.

How to quickly train so you don't die in your first actual combat encounter
>set up a macro to continually wrestle (grab and release while maintaining at least one grip) a target
>grab some food and water to last you a bit
>find armor and a shield and weapon in a hamlet or fortress
>find some lone goblin, naked faggot in a cave, or stray village animal
>sneak up on it
>strangle unconscious
>release the grip on the neck (very important)
>proceed to cripple or remove any body part that is capable of an attack (like teeth and legs)
>do it slowly and carefully, you don't want your new friend to bleed out
>once you feel sufficiently safe, engage your wrestle macro
>stop macro every now and then to drink, eat, or rest
>alternatively you could shit talk your new friend while you hold his hand
>when you feel you've trained enough in your combat skills, feel free to kill him or leave him to his fate.

Anything past 40.xx is majorly fucked up, and 43.03 itself has the lag spikes issue. All in all, Masterwork is pretty fun, though only the 34.11 version is interesting to me, and I can't fault it for its ambitiousness.

Material is a lot more important than quality. Any metal weapon at all will still kill someone on a headshot through a bone helm. Say

You was suddenly transported into a room in the DF universe

And in this room there were a dwarf that was grand master biter, that really wanted to murder you

Would you survive? i mean how dangerous can a dude get with his teethes
>>
>>174808524
I'd be dead in a few minutes. Dwarves are dangerous, yo.
>>
>>174808524
Dwarves are on average stronger and sturdier than humans in df, so there's a very good chance that, even if you do win, by the time you manage to kill them you're bleeding out from dozens of gashes and bites.
>>
>>174808524

He bites me over and over until I die(Or punches me over and over, Don't dwarves pick moves randomly?). If he's grand master he's at least Proficient in fighting ability and Above average/superior in strength or agility.
>>
>>174808524

A little known fact about hominid in general is that their muscle jaws are among the strongest in the entire body, like if it wasn't from the teeth root nerves going crazy when there is too much pressure, you could easily bite into something until your teeth splinter and/or explode, and that is also considering the fact that the teeth enamel is way stronger than the average bone.

So yeah, a biting dwarf would have no problem killing me, unless I suddenly became acrobatic enough as to drop kick it right in the face as to knock him out, well if he doesn't just bite my feet off before I land the hit.

It never needed to get confirmed. It was obvious even apriori that it was fake.

>herself
"King consort" is a profession title for males married to queens (or kings).

Also, those conversation strings don't exist in the game. The announcement "pulping it" never occurs in the game.

The context behind the story was the much anticipated 0.40 release back in 2014. The story was published a few days before the actual game release, and its purpose was to ruse people into thinking that the actual game update was already out.

Even though the text strings and described mechanics make the story obviously fake, it's grounded in what Toady had said that the release would add. That is, pulping mechanics and rumours.

You'll need magma or fire to melt ice walls. If you melt an ice boulder you'll just get an unusable glob of water that someone might clean up someday. I've seen reference to a method of using cave ins to convert ice walls to water, but I've never looked into it.

not sure, but probably. I was building a wall around a pasture for the livestock, and then the siege came, so everyone had to run inside (one poor bastard didn't make it due to his insistence on carrying his stone back)

bad news: goblins got inside the pasture and are slaughtering my livestock.

good news: the perimeter of the wall is secure so they have to cross the bridge to get in and out of the pasture, so I can repeatedly open and close the bridge to slowly beat them to death, trap them in inside the pasture, etc.

unfortunate about the loss of livestock, but the way this is going I might not have to even to send my military out to break this siege.

how much of a benefit is there to putting, say, 10 menacing iron spikes in a weapon trap instead of 1? Am I really getting 10x the damage?

Even then, it doesn't quite seem worth it since it's more important to give traps time to reset, so spacing 10 spikes on different tiles seems like a better idea then 10 spikes on 1 tile.
