Each monster rolls this chance every turn while you are ninja-stealthed. Monsters will only do shit like trying to attack or cast spells on turns that they actually pass the check, otherwise they just move randomly as if confused. And unlike with normal stealth, failing the check one turn doesn't mean the monster still knows where you are on the next turn.

Someone mentioned that SteelNeuron (the Wu Jian dev) regretted ever contributing to Crawl. Did he post this somewhere or what?

But in this game I have a few questions for anyone who's played it:

1. what chests on the first floor do you open? blue and up? green and up? Do you just destroy brown chests usually?

2. What's the best thing to purchase at the shop? Keys? Weapons? Items?

3. Is it better to kill the boss with your starting pistol, do you get a better weapon out of it than you could in chests/shops on the first floor?

4.If you don't flawless the first boss, is it better to just restart?

Short answer: it's much more complicated than that.

Longer answer: it depends on their XL, their spell set, whether they're wielding an item, the AC/EV/HP they had at death, their movement speed, and some other small things.

Really, their "difficulty" is a good indicator of how much XP they give.

I could really use a better weapon

If you find a ghost on a floor and then leave it and die later on on a different floor, does that ghost get deleted?
Say I find a ghost in D:3 and die in D:6. Will the D:3 ghost ever reappear on another run?

Also if a new guy dies to a ghost, will the level keep the old ghost or will it substitute it with the recently deceased character?

Speaking of D:3 to D:9 where only one ghost may reside.

Basically Thieves->Wargs for the first ~10 levels or so.

Then you either grind some experience off of Hounds to the north and/or Hydras. CARRY TELEPORT SCROLLS. You do not have to kill shit to get experience. Simply shoot at it or cast whatever to get a bit, then teleport once things look dangerous.

At some point move on to Dragons which are more dangerous but give more experience obviously.

Once you are ~25 or so go finish Stronghold, and then ~30 go do Orc/Labyrinth. You do Lab because it gives Rod of Recall. After that you can do whatever based on your class, and how good your loot is.

Also, don't forget to check the black market for shit. After level 30 or whatever (pulling it out of my ass) you can get really, really good shit awfully cheap there, such as potions of Healing/*Healing*/Life, or useful rods like Detection, Staffs of Healing etc. Quadruply so for PCBR which has retarded shit like Rods of Angelic Healing.

Personally, once I am comfortable doing Arena I just kill a few shits, loot every {excellent} thing I find, and then port back and sell everything and check the black market. You level slowly but you end up getting ridiculous shit from the Black Market.

OWH is a roguelike, we just don't talk about it here since it barely has any depth/too shallow like Sil so there's nothing to discuss. OWH is only very difficult using self-imposed challenges which are usually defined by classes but otherwise it's way easier than Crawl to the point that it's a coffee break roguelike even in very hard maniac mode.

PCB is really just for a particular type of roguelike player. You have to like the general concept of *bands, and then you have to like a shitton of bloat that exists for the sake of making the game "refreshing", even though the genre was historically fine with just procedural generation, RNG, and different character setups.

Even if you ignore that second part (bloat for refreshment), getting used to *bands takes time. They're more straightforward than hacklike games, but that leads to uneventful stretches of the game being exceedingly boring.

So, you're not at fault for not liking PCB.

In the early-mid game, there isn't a clearcut thing to do or to avoid. Skilling correctly and using your items intelligently will probably keep you alive 99% of the time, along with learning when to just run away and never return.
