MrSpeedrun has a better mindset than any of the older SM64 runners. He's clearly bad at games, but he's got the idea of practice down.

Every SM64 runner was shit when they started. Puncay, Cheese, Toast, they were all dogshit, and they didn't have anyone better than them talking down on them all the time just because they are not as skilled as the players who have been playing for years.

The SM64 community is cancerous.

Yes they did, especially cheese. You should've seen the shit Siglemic said about him early on.

The difference is that Cheese got a 1:41 in under a year, and mrspeedrun has been playing since 2013 and doesn't even have a 1:49.
>>
>>174600835
As I said, he's clearly just shit at games, but people are taking this opportunity to look like the all-knowing gods of practice. It's really quite pathetic.

No one should talk down to anyone in life, especially not if you're wanting to help them with a speedgame. It only makes you loook like a dick. It's not hard to offer advice and let it sit with the player instead of acting like a pompus faggot.
>>
>>174600620
>MrSpeedrun has a better mindset than any of the older SM64 runners.
MrSpeedrun has been around longer than cheese and toast, so I'm not sure which "older" runners you're referring to. do you just mean Puncay?
>>
>>174600937
stick to obsessing
>>
>>174600919
>people are taking this opportunity to look like the all-knowing gods of practice
you don't need to be all knowing or a god to practice effectively. cheese is half retarded and he manages to do it.
>No one should talk down to anyone in life, especially not if you're wanting to help them with a speedgame. It only makes you loook like a dick. It's not hard to offer advice and let it sit with the player instead of acting like a pompus faggot.
MrSpeedrun acts like a pompous faggot. do you even pay attention to the shit he says?
>>
>>174601113
No one is an all-knowing god of practice, but people act like it when they feel like they can talk down to a worse player.
>>
>>174601147
>No one is an all-knowing god of practice
right, but a lot of people still have extremely ineffective practice habits. practicing the right way isn't a complicated task, but plenty of people still manage to be lazy about it. ask any music teacher.
>>
>>174601270
You are not an all-knowing god of practice or a music teacher. You are an obsessed stream monster on /srg/ who doesn't even speedrun or know anything about practice first hand.

People improve at different rates, some people are stupid and don't correctly look up how to do something or forget how to do it properly and fill in the blanks with slower movement, it isn't some bizarre thing, it's normal. People are only human. The all-knowing god of practice meme ends here.
>>
>>174600919
>he's clearly just shit at games
Being shit at something like speedrunning just means you haven't worked hard or smart enough to get good at it. There's no such thing as natural ability when it comes to mindless muscle memory based execution.
>>
>mrspeedrun has a good mindset
>some people are stupid and don't correctly look up how to do something or forget how to do it properly and fill in the blanks with slower movement.

>You are not an all-knowing god of practice or a music teacher.
There is good science behind effective practice that you don't need to be a God or music teacher to understand. I used music teacher as an example of someone who would frequently encounter people who are too lazy to practice effectively. Feel free to do your own research on the topic, there is plenty of information available.
>People improve at different rates
This is correct. People who practice ineffectively improve more slowly, and people who practice effectively improve more quickly. The former will find themselves walled almost all the time, while the latter will find themselves seeing regular improvement.
>>
https://twitter.com/MSRQuotes

lmao
>>
>>174601448
This is absolutely false.
>>
>>174602041
Every speedrunner reaches a wall all the time. Every PB is a wall. There is no set consistency rate for a new PB, especially when they get harder as time goes on.

Don't comment on speedrunning when you don't speedrun yourself.
>>
>>174602301
No, it's absolutely true. Do some research on how physical mastery works.
>>
>>174602393
It is false, there is a talent for playing video games well, and no matter what if you got two people and they did the same practice routine, one would come out a lot better.

As I said before (this should be common sense really), don't comment on speedrunning when you do not speedrun yourself.
>>
>>174602681
The "natural talent" meme has been debunked time and time again. You're literally just making shit up. Try looking at actual scientific evidence pertaining skill mastery and muscle memory instead of just trusting your feelings.

>>174602813
>from a non speedrunner

These pastebins are always epic.

It's very easy to assume constant improvement with PBs flow in when you don't experience the grind yourself. Void.
>>
>>174602921
>Re-read the last part of my post. Everything you say is automatically void.
1. I am a speedrunner. Nothing you delude yourself into believing will ever change that.

2. You don't need to be a speedrunner to understand how practice works. None of the people who did actual independently verifiable science on effective practice are speedrunners. Muscle memory is a well understood physiological process that works the same across every skill that involves its utilization.
>>
>>174603128
Ask yourself, what are you even arguing? No-one is denying practice helps, but everyone IS different, including video game skill, hand to eye coordination and such. You are straight up incorrect and do not speedrun. Void.

Next.

>>
>>174604190
>You saying that every human peforms the same is what is incorrect.
The variances are extremely negligible outside of actual mental disabilities or brain damage.
>>
Toastrider is absolutely incapable of putting together a decent 120 run.

Grinding single stars is piss.
>>
>>174604252
That is also incorrect. It varies greatly from person to person. If what you were saying was true then why do so few people have good times?
>>
Imagine someone who isn't good at something telling you how to get good at something while constantly spouting 'm-muh music teacher theory'.
>>
>>174604373
>That is also incorrect.
The overwhelming scientific consensus is that it is correct.
>If what you were saying was true then why do so few people have good times?
Because most people don't put as much concentrated effort into it as runners with optimal times. Pretty obvious.
>>
>>174604671
What scientific consensus? Show me the results that prove every human peforms exactly the same bar the brain damaged. I'll be waiting.
>>
>>174601448
>There's no such thing as natural ability when it comes to mindless muscle memory based execution.
[citation needed]
>>
>>174606140
The physiology of myelin in the brain doesn't change from person to person. Obviously there are minute variances, in the same way food is metabolized within a 200 calorie variance from person to person, but the difference is so slight as to be negligible. Things like "natural ability" and "low metabolism" are excuses and myths people put forth.

Ultimately it boils down to your work ethic and past experience.
>>
>>174606448
>past experience.
An example of this would be if you've spent a large part of your life playing games at an ambitious level. You might then appear to have a "natural" edge over speedrunners who only ever played games casually or lazily, when really you've been conditioned over many years to have an improved muscle memory and understanding of gaming.

This is why it's easier for a musician to learn a second instrument than it was to learn their first. Or why a kid who played hockey all his life is better at golf than someone who takes up golf as their first sport.
>>
>>174606448
Still citation needed. You're not some total genetics denier and think everyone could be a mathematician or a world level sprinter if he practiced efficiently enough, are you?

>>174606863
It's not only that. If you don't start practicing something at a very early age, you will never be as good as someone who did. No adult has ever developed perfect hearing without already having a background in music since childhood for example.

>You're not some total genetics denier and think everyone could be a mathematician or a world level sprinter if he practiced efficiently enough, are you?
Intellectualism and athleticism are skillsets that lend themselves better to natural ability.

Speedrunning is just muscle memory; it doesn't require a high IQ or a specific bodytype.

>If you don't start practicing something at a very early age, you will never be as good as someone who did. No adult has ever developed perfect hearing without already having a background in music since childhood for example.
False. There are countless examples of adults mastering music at a university level without having begun as a child. It's more difficult, maybe, but far from impossible.

>Speedrunning is just muscle memory; it doesn't require a high IQ or a specific bodytype.
What about reaction time and mashing ability to only name 2 things where it's immediately obvious?

>False.
Then show me an adult who learned absolute pitch.
>It's more difficult, maybe, but far from impossible.
Ok, so you at least admit it is more difficult, which means you need more practice than someone who had early life experience. Now that means that if both practice the same way, the latecomer will always stay worse.
>>

>What about reaction time and mashing ability to only name 2 things where it's immediately obvious?
Both of these things can be improved with practice. Your natural body type can't really be changed.
>Ok, so you at least admit it is more difficult, which means you need more practice than someone who had early life experience. Now that means that if both practice the same way, the latecomer will always stay worse.
Yes, but what does having practiced something earlier in life have to do with natural ability?

The key to building good muscle memories is to focus on the quality of the quantity. We've often heard, probably from Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, that 10,000 hours is the magic number to make someone an expert. It's likely that this is the case when you practice well, but if you carelessly build procedural memory over and over again you can just end up being really good at repeating your mistakes. When you practice, take it slow at first. Going back to learning to play a song on the piano, don't rush to learn the entire thing. Break the song up into parts and concentrate on learning one part really well. Practice that section slowly until you've got it down, then speed it up little by little until you can play at full speed. More broadly, when you want to learn to do something well, break it into small parts and take each part slowly until you're able to do it very well. Take breaks. Be patient. The more you rush the big picture, the more likely you'll be to develop muscle memories that are difficult to reverse.

I really like this, because it accurately describes so many bad speedrunners.

Literally what is the point of this general?

There is absolutely no discussion of video games in any way, shape, or form. Every single poster in this general is a shitposter that still hasn't been banned despite shitting up /vg/ and 4chan as a whole. Even if the general itself remained on-topic, it would

1. Not have enough discussion to even warrant it's existence
2. Have no justification to exist because speedruns are NOT vidya
3. Would quickly fall off the 10th page and die because there is literally nothing to talk about.

Speedrunning is shit in general. The entire speedrun community revolves some stream whore exploiting a game in ways that it was never intended to be played. It promotes unhealthy practices regarding vidya; specifically the practice of beating games as quickly as possible instead of enjoying the games thoroughly. By encouraging speedrunning, you are literally encouraging the big corporations to make shorter and shorter games for a higher price, thus dumbing down all of vidya in the process. You are literally all goyim to the happy merchant.

Speedrunning is the cancer that is ruining gaming.

>>
>>174612480
>Just let the cancer concentrate

Hasn't that been proven to make things worse every time?
>>
Why has the source for the scientific consesus for every humans brain being able to peform at the same ability not been posted after about two hours and multiple prompts?

>>174612480
This is a stupid post. When the thread is dead, people don't take it anywhere else, they just don't bother.

The thread is only populated by an obsessed freak who makes false claims and is unable to provide source on anything and some parrots. It's the most worthless general I have ever witnessed.

Actual speedrunners are out there speedrunning and discussing with other runners. This is a cesspit of shit.

First you have to prove the existence of a speedrunning gene.

>Why would I prove something that you randomly came up with?
If being good at speedrunning is a natural ability, then there is a genetic factor.

There is plenty of evidence that speedrunning is a learned skill. You don't need a source for that. Now in order to counter that argument, we would need evidence of a speedrunning gene.
