Depends on whether you want to be able to take your target anywhere or at their house. You could make the game free roam and let players choose their targets, but a more reasonable scope would be to assign a target with a randomly generated home (ranging from paranoid gun nut in a shitty part of town to a rich guy who could deploy the hounds on you) and to force the player to work with what they're given to earn their kill.

Scripts are hardcoded. A generic scripts.h file can be accessed by any dialogue tree, and that will have general stuff like changing levels or adding party members

More specific scripts, like ones that effect a unique behavior in a specific entity in a level, will be stored in that level's blueprint .h file. The dialogue trees just contain function pointers so it doesn't matter a ton where the script functions are, but I think this will be the best solution

It's definitely not convenient or flexible to hardcode your "scripts" that way, since you have to recompile every time.

Changing the generic scripts could cause some long compile times, but I think once I have them working I won't need to change them much

Changing level-specific scripts, which I'll definitely be doing much more often, would be done in the blueprint files, and changing a level blueprint file only requires a level factory .cc file to be recompiled, so I think I should be fine there

Finished re-adding the rest of the physical attack states and put in hitboxes for moves that were missing them. Also put in the basic ice attack and made the MP bar functional. The attack functions similarly to before, where the damage increases as the string goes on, but now after the 2nd hit it will always do its max potential damage and can be continued until you stop attacking for any reason, or you run out of MP.

Going to need to figure out a low/none MP indicator and a new ice hit effect. I forgot how old some of these animations were.

Using my new sword swing animation system, I decided to try a simple sort of unsheathing attack. I think it turned out looking cool, if a little weird when facing certain directions. That said, it's highlighting problems with my collision detection, which I need to deal with.

How do I implement a proper buff/debuff system? Simple stat buffs are easy enough, but what if I had a debuff that (just as an example) stopped the player from opening their inventory, or using items? These kinds of debuffs I'd feel would encourage me to add extremely hacky code to let me access whatever systems I want. For example to stop the player from opening their inventory I'd need to make an int canOpenInventory in the inventory class which the debuff would decrement at the start and increment at the end (simple bool wouldn't work because what if you had multiple debuffs that did this? they'd overwrite each other). Similar story for the using item debuff.

At this point though I can see a problem where I'd have so many of these "canX" variables all over my classes that any change I might want to make will break everything. Not to mention the fact that my buffs and debuffs will need to have access to pretty much every system in my game which doesn't seem good.

What's a better way of doing this? Are there any open source examples?

Simplest systemy would be make a buff/debuff class and handle your logic there, then have a buff/debuff collection on your character, and when your character gets buffed/debuffed, you push the stuff to the collection to work there.

VR is fun.

Starting to dev is easy thanks to Unreal and Unity. It's a completely new medium though so lots of old rules do not apply and new ones appear which is why making something good is hard. I would say that deving for VR is a lot harder because users get to feel a lot more presence and more ways to interact with your world which in turn makes it so much easier for you to break this magical experience.

After owning the device for almost a year I would say that roomscale is very limiting and makes you feel like you are in a cage. It is much more suited to arcades where you can have real-world rooms filled with props that you can interact with in your game which is probably HTC is pushing the device in that direction. Nonetheless, it is an amazing experience and I urge you to try it if you haven't done yet. can't wait for nervegear

It's okay to be skeptical of VR as it stands right now because the boundries haven't really been pushed yet.

It's difficult to develop a good game for the VR glasses without making people nautious as shit, and without making a gimmick at the same time.

Teleportation worked in the first few months but then every one started to use it. It doesn't really encourage you to look around and discover what the VR platform has to offer.

They've released Viewport Arcade platform that allows an easy way for developers to distribute their games and arcades to run the content legally as (if I understand it correctly) you need a different kind of license to run games in an arcade so technically you can't just buy a game on steam and run your arcade with that account (I've seen people do this). I am not too interested in arcades so you might want to google this yourself for more details.

Newbie here. Don't expect a complete spoonfeed but could anyone tell me what they think would be a better tool for me? I was looking at both Godot and Unity, for a 3D game in the same vein as the Shadowrun series, though not turn based. Probably not isometric but fixed camera perspective.

I don't mind if its complicated and I fail a lot, it'll be a learning experience. Just don't want to have a glass ceiling.

I'm making a prototype of a market for my harvest moon game.
My idea is each item that can be sold has a quantity. The "normal" quantity is 100, each day a random number between -15 and 15 is added to the quantity. The number then lerps back to 100 a little bit, so it doesn't go too far off. The quantity is used to create a ratio and it's multiplied by the base price of the item to determine the price.
If the player sells a whole bunch of one item, it will lower the price for a while, and the lerp will bring it back to a normal price eventually.
I can also add events that happen, either adding or subtracting from the quantity.

For starters your "Loaded" and "Ammo" have large boxes which they don't really need and clutter the lower half of the screen. You can easily put them together as x.loaded/x.ammo in a combined box underneath the currently equiped weapon.

You can also lose the names, you already made symbols. The art of the boxes is nice but they are simply too big. Placing the Health and Armor boxes underneath the portraits makes them less distracting and lets the player see their weapon in more detail.

Not trying to nitpick, I actually really like your visual style and hope to see more updates from you.

Common abilities (ward, rush, double strike, etc) all are stored as flags on the card itself, and whenever the ability could activate (start of turn, on play, on death, etc) the game checks if the ability is "on" and then does its thing. Custom abilities or super specific ones get their own small script.
