Audio files aren't vinyl records, they are encoded data that your computer must interpret at runtime.

.wav is the closest thing to "pure" audio, there's basically nothing to decode which makes it the best and fastest format.

I meant voxels limit aesthetic, not that other word i just learned.

Im going for cartoon style, since i dont have a full dev team to make realism.

Im more focused on mechanics than look. But i know kids will be impressed by smooth graphics in a sandbox.

use MSVC 2015 to develop all source code, and to compile and debug on windows

compile on linux with makefiles using gcc from the command line, debug with gdb from the command line

want to change the source code? alt-tab to windows and edit it and save it

dropbox / syncthing / network share to have the linux folder instantly update by the time you alt-tab back to it to remake and rerun it

I forgot why

Also, instead of UNUSED(var) I just go (void)var

But I do have to admit that I wrapped malloc to be like

#define ALLOC(TYPE,NUM) (TYPE*)calloc(sizeof(TYPE),NUM+1)

just to get rid of having to cast it manually all the fucking time

What're your compile times like? I'm always annoyed that I end up switching to my "fucking around" workspace if I need to wait even half a minute. Adding an annoying beep once compilation is done helps. Or have the game immediately launch so it winds up on top of whatever screen I was looking at.

Never get functionality mismatches with different compilers? I guess you're targeting pretty standard architecture. Is MSVC even 64bit?

Player becomes the ruler of a small settlement. Start of with manual resource gathering in the vein of Minecraft and Terraria, but the focus is on building housing and workshops for NPCs to live and work in with a needs system akin to the Anno series. The goal is to become emperor by gaining power on the overworld map through military conflict with troops created in the settlement.

No the MSVC IDE itself is still 32bit

MSVC compile times are pretty fast, and it only recompiles as needed, gcc isn't so quick but also the makefile I use puts the object as dependant on its direct source, not on the whole include-chain that it includes, so sometimes I have to make clean, make all

that can be improved but I don't try so hard

If I do a full rebuild, and get up to drink water, it is finished by the time that I am pouring water into my cup

Usually in MSVC you just press F5 or hit the green arrow, which will compile the game and then launch it in the debugger if the build was successful, in makefile I sometimes have launch the game as a final command of building it, but sometimes I remove that

could have a make run that is dependant on make all I suppose

And yes there is the same source files for all platforms, with minimal #ifdefs it is all bog standard SDL and C/C++

If any easily identifyable keys are in the layout (spacebar, return, WASD) just show key relative to them. Highlight one so the player presses it, and they see what happens.

Alternatively just show the whole keyboard with the relevant keys highlighted. I think Hyperlight Drifter did this?

I'm guessing this is just a basic platformer thing. If your controls are more complicated and need explanation I don't know how you ever expected to get away without text

Think of an animal that starts with the letter of the key

like a xenoraptor for x or a eskimo for e, etc

then create a contrived screen-sized level where there is literally nothing else you can do but that one game mechanic, and the animal is there on the level

so level one is a pit and you are in it, there is nowhere else to go but up, and there is a walrus sitting on the surface

if the player presses any key nothing happens as all are disabled, except for w which moves him up

then when you go up, the screen changes to the next level

you are in the dead-end of a hallway that leads to the right

and there is a duck waddling around

and you can't move in any direction except right, and only by pressing the d key

and so on, and you just keep on expanding until you have covered all the game mechanics

the initial ones (w,a,s,d) are obvious, people will know them on their own already, but they establish the animal name first letter = key to press to handle the new thing on this level

I posted one of his newest videos to show everyone he was still stealing progress posts here and it got like 400 views because I posted it every couple days for a week.
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVWAy2-1b_E
This was more promotion and visibility than gogem ever gets on his videos so he believes it is "marketing" when other people do it for him. Unfortunately he also got tanked with thumbs downs. Best to conveniently ignore that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlD9K5mY5n8

When you pull away flash in the pan moments of attention grabbing or someone giving him attention and leave him by himself and see there was absolutely no "marketing" achieved. He remains at ~70 viewers per video like he was a year ago. It's literally all in his head, all of it. The entire gogem empire is a 30 year old man playing make believe with himself for pity.

Hey, first time posting. I'm working on a top down game set in a high school.

Right now I'm working on the multiplayer, which I guesssss could be described as a multiplayer hotline miami. All the weapons work realistically. It's a last man standing type game.

You can only see the room you're in, but there are sound indicators for the rooms you can't see, and if you open a door you get vision that room.

The map is a realistic high school. Like the weight room allows you to pick up bars and use that as a melee weapon, for instance. All the weapons act realistically.

At the beginning, you choose a "faction" like jocks, nerds, etc. Then you start in their corresponding room and they all have unique abilities. Every faction has a "resource" exclusive to them that the other factions would want. This makes it so you can't turtle in your base and wait it out.

I'm hoping to do a single play aspect too, but I'm unsure how to approach. I also might wanna do an office building map, but I don't know how to do factions for that.

Should I shelve the multiplayer aspect and work on single player until I can figure out how to get it to work?

Gogem is an old dog laying down to die. All the signs are there.
- He knew his patreon would be laughed at but he still tried
- Let his site go into disrepair and redirected it to a patreon which he then broke and hasn't fixed
- He shit and pissed himself by posting links to a game in here that anons couldn't even post screens of without getting banned
- His latest youtube videos were last gasps of breath where he even antagonized agdg by putting shit in the description like "You can't really expect me to know whos games all these clips belong to so take your credit with a comment."

Time to bury the old boy he's starting to smell.

>>
>>174348357
Do you have anything to show or are you just ideaguying?

Also multi vs singleplayer depends a lot on what your goal is for the game, if it's a P2P kind of game where the player only needs a few friends to play then doing multiplayer seems fine.
If it's a MMO kind of thing with servers and shit then you might as well just drop the multiplayer since you're never going to get the userbase.

AI is very hard if the bots have the same capabilities as the player so you should work on multiplayer first since AI will be a huge fucking undertaking and you would have to rewrite it anyway when you change your game's design while developing it.

I've only worked on the map so far, I figured since the game is pretty much based around the map I should do that first.

I envisioned the game as a multiplayer experience, but I feel like since it's my first game it won't have the install base to make it viable so I should shift focus to a single player game

That's the gist of it, yeah. My goal is to create a simple GSG that puts the focus on economy and logistics, pushing back diplomacy and the finer aspects of warfare. Approaching it like it was a boardgame is a helpful mindset.
>3D
Theoretically, 3D art should be an afterthought. I don't know of any GSG that doesn't operate on 2D logic. Although I would really like to see an attempt at a truly 3D GSG.

Pathfinding and vision is the least of your worries, the hard part is building an AI that makes the right decisions at the right times and is fun to play against.
It's easy to do a simple Hotline Miami AI where the bots are simply objects that bumrush you but if you're trying to emulate a player with proper decision-making then it's not easy.

P&CAs during the last decade have learned to include a key to highlight all interactable things in a scene. Adopt that.
Do not base riddles based on puns, idioms, or metaphors, as these tend to be ethnic-/nationality-specific and don't translate well into other languages.
All puzzles must follow established rules that are comprehensibly made available to the player.
Have more than one hint at the solution to a puzzle. The hints and puzzle should be close to each other chronologically speaking. Nobody remembers what an unremarkable NPC said three hours ago.

>>
>>174353963
Mechanically speaking it's top-notch, it is set out to be a puzzle collection and achieves that wonderfully.
P&CAs however are superior narratively, as the puzzles are intertwined with the adventure's environment. It does not have the non-sequitur nature of "Oh, a shop for insects? That reminds me of a magic square math puzzle with insect sprites!".
The fact that you have an inventory to take parts of the scenery with you into other scenery and modify new scenery based on that alse strengthens the narrative, there is less seclusion of content.
Also, PL's hint system works for puzzle-collections, such as Puzzle Agent, but I would feel insulted were a P&CA offer that functionality (Simon the Sorcerer did that. It was not as blunt as PL, but it helped remedy some guess-the-verb moments. However I'd rather the game were to remove the flaws instead of treating the symptoms this way)

Okay so basically in my game, your pants are possessed by an evil spirit. At certain points when you're going about your day, the spirit pulls your pants down for the world to see your cock and balls. Your crush, the policemen, the firemen, the mailman, the dogs chasing the mailmen, your parents...they all laugh at your tiny penis. The goal is to survive the whole day without letting the embarrassment bar fill all the way up.

I cant speak about contruction workers.
Because i work at a catering hall for minimum wage.

I do my job, regardless of my manager,
But i know my manager is absolutely necessary in-order to whip my minimum wage colleagues into shape, cuz some of them are lazy fucks.

All i wanted you to do was link to what ur talking shit about, and i agree with you, some one these peoples ideals disagree with what i see in the minimum wage world.

It's easy to start slipping up and missing out on games. Especially if you start getting your vidya news by just glancing at it or even worse looking at /v/ where they will be constantly ranting negatively about every new jaw dropping mega AAA game that is actually quite good. It's poisonous. You have to force yourself to sit down and play some new games and you will be enjoying it again before you know it.

Or not in which case you have to decide whether to be soulless with your games because you really don't give a shit about vidya or stop gamedev.
>>
>>174357409
Does it really need to be a tiny dick? An anaconda monster would be way hotter and you could add some fun physics.

Fuck off back to your shitty corporate """"job"""" that ensures you will never accomplish anything actually meaningful with your life. You're kidding yourself if you think that office politics and "management" positions are what drive the real economy. Innovation and progress forward in any industry never comes from those kinds of toxic self-serving environments. It almost always comes from individuals and small businesses who know how to put a functional, hardworking team together where people like each other, free of politics and all the bullshit that runs rampant in corporate america.
>>
Wait so gogem released his loli game already?
>>
>>174358091
>Fuck off back to your shitty corporate """"job"""" that ensures you will never accomplish anything actually meaningful with your life
No?
>You're kidding yourself if you think that office politics and "management" positions are what drive the real economy.
Nobody said that? All complex organizations need direction though. Are you an anarchist? You sound like just another naive angry adorable anarchist correct me if I'm wrong though.
>runs rampant in corporate america
You know what doesn't run rampant in corporate America? Retards like you. Because you're mentally disabled and nobody will be able to work with you for more than a day. So stop pretending you know what you're talking about, because you don't and it's obvious.

Mine too especially since I am still playing some great stuff from 2014 and 2015 that I put off when I was "too busy" for vidya. I have "grown out" of vidya many times but thankfully gamedev always motivates me to see what's new and I end up getting hooked on new games.

There are still way too many great games I know I will never play because I'm too wrapped up in other great games or not enough time to even give it a shot. Truly we are in a golden age.

(Hopefully) quick question. I'm just trying to get a left trigger input on a ps4 controller to work with unity.

if (Input.GetAxis("Aim") == 1)
{
Debug.Log("Hello");
}

In the input manager my settings are this:
grave = 0.1
dead = 0.19
Sensitivity = 2
Snap = on

Type is joystick axis and the specific axis is the 9th one.

Estimate the number of people who have worked on making a game all around the world in the past, say 10 years
Then estimate the number of devs who you personally would say have "made it"
Then take that second number, and divide it by the first.
Congratulations! This is your probability of "making it"

Changed the way movement is handled so anything that moves the player has to funnel through one section of code, ensuring more careful control over it. After doing this, it allowed me to safely make it so the player can move while swinging. This is just a test sword swing. After a bit more tweaking, I'll be able to easily build a sword swinging combo system.

Yes, financial incentives most likely for games that get adopted due to enough flags that includes one of yours will surely cut down on games not worthy to be on Steam. No explorer will vote for uninteresting games or take bribes to upboat certain products, no sir!

How can anyone advertise GIMP as a functioning piece of software? It's one of the most compelling arguments against the free-as-in-freedom cause.

I was thinking of creating some sort of dynamic photosensitive filter inspired by anime (something like x + 1 explosions lower the window's gamma by (n)%).
Basically since the porygon Pokémon thing, all shows with flickering/fast moving lights have specific scenes with the luminosity lowered by 25%.

Epilepsy is a beast. Seizures can be absences (brief moments throughout the day), petit mal (you get rigid, and shake lightly for a minute) or grand mal (the same but worse).
There's a 3% chance someone you know has epilepsy. Photosensitive epilepsy is only a quarter of that because it's rarer. But the worst part is that this kind, unlike the other, varies from person to person.
>Had a childhood friend who suffered from epilepsy and had to take pills whenever we wanted to play.
It's probably because he was unlucky enough to be triggered by your TV's hertz frequency: normally nine out of ten people only have problems with intense strobe lights, then there's the smaller population which suffers from that and they have to suppress it through medicine (Ian Curtis from Joy Division couldn't stay on stage too long for that, simple stage lights would give him problems even).

My father has trauma-induced epileptic activity derived from an accident that took place when he was young. He's on phenobarbital, which does wonders (he hasn't had anything in two years or so).
Epileptic warnings in '80s US were introduced after long, just struggles. It's good that they have them. Fortunately I live in a place where insurance is relatively inexpensive and life-saving medicines are covered (in America you pay for 4K$-a-trip ambulances, the reason why there are those bracelets with the "Seizure disorder / Unless I bang my head, don't call the ambulance", which I find disgusting), and so we don't starve to keep my father not-dying.

Also we should take a look to the link inside the link >>174370964 posted which gives you an idea: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1073075/

Interesting fact: a company called NeuroPace has created a "brain pacemaker" which works. It acquires data and adjusts brain signals. The first patient used to have bad seizures weekly but he's been seizure-free for a year now.

All it does is take control of the difficulty away from the player.

For example, if the player is dieing a lot at one part, just leave them the option of lowering the difficulty. If the difficulty lowers itself, then all you've accomplished is a slight convenience for players that would have lowered it anyway but you've potentially robbed other players who wanted to overcome the challenge as it was.

At the very least, make sure it's optional.

If I was to compare what I'm seeing in your webm to what I've seen in other games with grappling hooks/ hookshot/ rappelling. There should be either a certain visually obvious material that you can interact with or a certain texture that can be grappled on too.

Unless you've forced a player to pull themselves up through a platform beforehand, it's not that intuitive to phase up through a solid platform.

Maybe instead put some light up indicator on those panels that you can lightning towards, then eventually put some non lit up ones, then remove them entirely.

made some general combat improvements

parrying looks a bit nicer
being parried now has severe consequences as it breaks your defense and slows you down
same when you run out of stamina
jump attacks work properly now dealing masive damage but costing you stamina for a heavy attack + jumping costs
being too low on stamina cuts your damage accordingly

similar things for enemies soon i guess/hope/when it becomes necessary for testing

next: new enemy/animations, trailer, greenlight, alpha demo

the character moves a tiny faster than it feels like they should for the walk animation; it's a lot more noticeable with the run animation
also her breasts kind of look taped down, like given the amount of curvature I can see they should be bigger-- that's not to say "give her big tits", just that it should be consistent

>>
>>174362630
The dots are a place holder showing me several things. Black dot shows me where the direction the player was last moving as directed by the left stick. The red dot shows where the player is aiming with stick movement, which means it follows the left stick when the right stick isn't in use. Finally we have the blue dot which shows where the player is aiming. It usually follows the red dot, unless the player is locked on to a target.
>>
>>174384286
I think if the dot were to follow recoil it would make it harder to aim, since it will be going crazy and the player wont be able to know exactly where the gun is pointed.

Likely to be idiotic or google-able question ahead;

I'm using GMS for my project, I started on it and was going to use GMS2 eventually but it's not possible to import GMS projects right now.

Anyway, I noticed that the Steam version I have installed can export a project to Windows and the non-steam install can't without an additional license purchase, which is no longer possible. Also I'm pretty sure my Yoyo account is tied to both installs, so I'm not sure why it would only allow me to use it in one.

So I guess what I'm asking is that if I use my that copy to continue working on my shit can I slap that shit out for Windows without getting into legal mumbo at any point in the future?

I never read into licenses and wasn't really concerned until I wanted to make an exe for my so-called devbuddy.

I have two versions installed due to moving hdd's around, old steam libraries.

Going to post this question again. I'm just trying to get a left trigger input on a game pad to work with unity.

if (Input.GetAxis("Aim") == 1)
{
Debug.Log("Hello");
}

In the input manager my settings are this:
grave = 0.1
dead = 0.19
Sensitivity = 2
Snap = on

Type is joystick axis and the specific axis is the 9th one.

Shouldn't this work?
