On another topic, I've been reading up on Ascension and 13PUK. Did they really make them worse with questionable mechanic changes? Unfortunate since I was about to pick one of them up, too as I haven't played either's original yet.

Ascension could have been decent, but they have completely dropped support for it and it made no sense to release it as a full price stand-alone game instead of a regular expansion.
Officer play (which is the biggest addition) is extremely lame and the overall system is more AI dependant (which is pretty bad and doesn't keep up with the new resources added).
RTK13PK is better than the base game in every way, it's just more akin to what the original should have been in the first place and far from perfect.

I think that the issue with the original RTK13 was more with the rushed released and broken or missing game mechanics and balance.
It had tons of patches messing with those things, but I don't really remember game breaking bugs.
A lot of players (especially Chinese) couldn't play the PK version at all at launch, and I'm not sure if the situation is better for them now.
I personally didn't have many issues aside from a couple of minor issue like saves needing multiple tries to actually load.
The problem is that Koei is developing something like 20 versions of the game across every platform and language and they don't really have the time or staff to do it properly so you get rushed releases every time.
Then again, unlike Ascension, RTK13PK should get extended support for months or years (if they are actually going for the second PK).

I think there's a little bit less troops spamming even at low recovery rates and the most powerful special unit (elephants) is now in the south-west, but the high density of cities (and the lack of enemies for whoever unites the top north) still make the northern factions overpowered.
I actually think that the auto-resolve algorithm is fucked and cause most of the issues in a north vs south situation though.
Having the best units allow you to completely crush the Yuan/Cao clans in directly controlled battles but you're still going to lose the auto-resolved ones and there's now way your single army can over even half of the fronts they will attack you on.
You're unlikely to get into this situation unless you start from a very disadvantaged position allowing the AI to get huge before you though.

It's very clunky, there aren't many options and it take ages to get the portraits and characters you want since you have to scroll the entire list of officers every single time as you aren't allowed to type the names.
Also, no built-in export function.
