Ike may not have killed his foe or Duma, and Roy may have, but considering that Ike didn't have a figurative kryptonite to carry him (or any lords that aren't Duma-slayers for that matter) that's still pretty impressive. Like, if Lex Luthor punched superman, then uses kryptonite to stab him. Superman dies. Then lets say Doomsday punches Superman, but can't kill him because he lacks Kryptonite. Is Doomsday really that much weaker than Lex? Same thing with Ike and Roy. Roy just has a better means to an end, but that doesn't mean he's that much better. His sword is just really broken.

You can research, say, Eliwood's fighting skill, his weapons, and his past-experiences to get an idea of how he'd fare against others. But you don't need to go and suddenly turn everyone into superhumans that make no sense within the context of story, gameplay, and intended narrative.

Again, i agree that Palutena, Beerus, etc. should nowehere near be comparable, but we can prove that simply by looking at their own hard, physical feats. Palutena shows physical limitations, especially compared to Beerus. This doesn't require over-analyzation, since one can very clearly tell just by how they fight that one is vastly superior to the other.

And again, back to gameplay mechanics. Those meteor dodging, arrow dodging, lightning, etc. are 99% in gameplay. And once again. In a story like FE7, where the main trio is explicitly not able to power through and murder everything. They need to use stealth when infiltrating the Black Fang. Now why would that be the case if their entire force was supersonic? No one should've even been able to pose a threat, but they clearly did.


Now, obviously I'll grant that you that they're not always normal humans. Awakening for example shows this in the Arena cutscene. But in that very same game you have Owain's father die to arrows, which shouldn't be possible according to your logic.

Took down Nuibaba with the best technique yet:
Warp Lukas to the Shaman and get that critical hit.
Have Lukas die and move my team around and pick all the enemies off using Forsyth, who is basically a green haired Lukas. He also dealt the killing blow to Nuibaba while Clive, Tobin, Gray, and Kliff sat in the back being shit Paladins because they suck as Cavalry units.

Revived Lukas afterwards. Reminder to not do a all Cavalier run in Echoes, it works in other games but not in this.

What's your criteria for deciding whether or not you should bench a unit?

For me, if one of their big 3 stats (Str/Mag, Skill, Speed) falls below their level (eg. 12 at level 12, up to cap which is usually ~30 anyway), they're out, unless they've proven themselves otherwise.

Sometimes I feel like this is pretty strict, though. How do you separate the wheat from the chaff in your playthroughs?

You always want to keep things in perspective, flier are most of the time mediocre (pegs are usually frail and lacking in strength and wyvern lords are slow and lacking in res) but the fact that in many games they can shave the map in too, help in positioning, and take advantage of the enemy's inability to reach them makes them hard to bench unless they have serious competition between them, like with Karin in FE5.
