That's why merging 5*units is the new fury meta. Since matchmaking is done though number of merges + skill inherited, non-whales can get better scores by raising their base 3/4* units to 5* and merge.

Granted it'll take lots of time and feathers compared to just shelling out money for a +2 unit, but it's still possible for non-whales to compete somewhat

Ninian, Nino, Eirika would be a good starting spot depending on IVs, at that point you could have a tossup between Roy and Buncina. You could also roll with a very straightforward Ninian, Nino, Ephraim, Roy setup.

MRobin is still an absolutely fantastic defensive unit if you have extra feathers and one with a decent IV. Even without TA he is incredibly annoying to deal with and makes the enemy take bad trades.

Unless ALL of the maps that week don't favor him (the mountain one mainly) then he is an amazing defensive hero and will net you at least 5-10 wins.

If someone doesn't have a counter for him then well there you go that's a win, people can also get fucked on positioning on maps like the lava one and it leads to some very big problems. He honestly doesn't fall behind on the vast majority of the maps so it's not an issue.

If you're making a flying team all you need is Darting Blow and Draw Back or Reposition. If you're not using her in a flying team than a new sword isn't a bad idea either.
In a flying team all she's going to be doing is giving your killers the goad boost, moving them out of danger and maybe killing an odd green if your Cherche doesn't have Axebreaker.

This is what I use but I don't run a flier team so she is a utility unit who can deal decent damage.
