There's only one expansion right now and I'm pretty sure you can find it bundled rather cheap (like 20 bucks the whole shit or something). You have to have the expansion anyways to go for the last one, the way WoW managed shit, as far as I understand. We're getting a new expansion in like, two months or some shit, keep that in mind. Whether you want to start now and catch up so you're ready for the new expansion and shell out some more extra RL Gil or wait until it releases for the possibility of an even cheaper bundle, is up to you.

Right now Heavensward is the only thing that will do anything for you, and until you get to the actual expansion area all it does for you is allow you to play as an Au Ra (lizard guy/girl) and go to the bottom of the Palace of the Dead.

It is a deceptively long time until the expansion, because you have to do something on ~250 quests. Stormblood will include Heavensward afaik and it's out in a few months so you might wait and just play the base game until then.

The robe is TMR levels of good. In fact, it's better than almost every other TMR.
It's considered the best healer robe in the game for general (nonelemental) fights. If you don't get it, you fucked up.

The light resist is just as shitty as Maxwell's dark +15% resist, if not worse.
Forgot to mention there's also a 10% Trust Moogle for clearing it.
