So for the one other anon that seems to play Blazing here, Ninja Road stage 18 is just pushing my fucking shit in. Even if I do manage to pass it, it costs me like two of my squads, and the last one gets obliterated by 4 tails Naruto because they can't kill him fast enough after using up all their chakra against the Hokages

I obviously don't have a Madara, otherwise this would be a non-issue. Who actually does enough damage to clear stage 18 without losing 2/3 of my team? Probably someone fully limit broken, I'm really kicking myself for slacking with that now

Honestly every member of Team 7 not called Kakashi was awful in Shippuden.

Naruto went from annoying, brash, immature troublemaker with some surprising hidden depth to generic shonen protagonist, and then to flawless ninja jesus who forgives everyone and can do everything.

Sasuke went from understandably distant prodigy who was beginning to finally create human bonds, to inconsistent plot tumour whose selfish (but justifiable) actions were forgiven with a slap on the wrist.

Sakura... best I can say about her is that she had begun to show the desire to improve, and in Shippuden all her training is used for one fight, while she spends the rest of the series being used as shipping fodder, or heal-bitch.

Perhaps something like taking as little damage as possible or being a certain distance from enemies and the reward being I don't know,an extra point on a reaction attack from an enemy or something?
You could also encourage others to try to protect Arata more I guess,but regardless you'd have to make it so it doesn't lock people into a 'perfect' style of play and hamper independent thought.

I feel like you should've actually probably spoilered this.

I don't really want it to be random in the sense that their success or failure depends on dice rolls. I want it more to be something they can work towards long term. For example, Fugetsu causing damage with Nenryobo, while technically dice-related, is something he can work towards over the course of several games or combats.

I'm not really using XP in this game, I just level them up when I think they've done enough. As I've said, I've slowed down levelling up, since I gave them big HP and CP boosts, but their next level up isn't too far away, probably after Mission VI.

I like the idea of 'Spend X turns Y distance away from enemies', but as you said, I don't want them to hamper themselves thinking that they can only play one way. I want the stuff to be things they can unlock either by playing normally, or as a reward for trying a different style.

As for spoilering, they will have a journal entry showing what they need to complete the sub-quest, but not what the reward is. And while they could use their Bonus Action to throw a shuriken every turn, a) that would gimp themselves, since most of them have much better Bonus Actions to use, and b) the enemies they're facing now more or less shrug of shuriken that aren't thrown as a Full Action.
