I haven't played VD in a while and I'm wondering what weapons are good for a heavy?
>>
Last raven balance patch update:

Had some time to get back on this week and make some progress, Testing is complete for movement speed and acceleration and I datamined the weapon stats (they're different in code from other stats, taking up different files)

Only things left to find are:
>Impact force (unlisted stat)
>Lock Type (not listed as "standard" in game files, but I think I know where to find it)
>weapon Lock Time (unlisted stat)
>lock on range
>Overboost, Hanger, and EO stats (I think EO is the same as weapon attack, I just haven't found it yet)

As long as I'm able to mess with OB/EO the rest of those can stay the same. The rest are more there for adjusting how weapons play but their core balance is still accuracy vs range vs dps and that's easy to figure out.
>>
>>174111936

I may have asked this before, and I apologize if I did, but how would one go about implementing these improvements to Last Raven portable?
>>
>>174113910
I'm working with portable but the PS2 versions seem to be different formatting

basically when I'm done I'll zip the changes into a patch file and players can apply that using a PPF patcher of some kind, I'll probably include the whole bundle in a new version of the LR ppsspp package, so players can get the patch file, patcher program, ppsspp, control schemes, hang workaround cheat, etc. in one file.

Yes, as long as you have a way to read/write the official disc or burn a patched copy of it that will play. I'm just issuing out a manual patch file, I think the PSP has a built-in feature to add patches to games, but I could be wrong about that.

any hope for an AC announcement this year? will FromSoft finally show the 6 of us some love?
>>
>>174132618
Very, very, veeeeeeery slim chance at TGS. Like, maybe a screenshot of a mocked up title logo, at the very most.
>>
>>174133397
>>174132618
not likely at TGS. From tends to do their announcements at E3, and it's been long enough since they said they started work that they would have something to show for it this year at E3.

Maybe not a trailer, but at least teasers/titles/screenshots. By TGS time they're more likely to have a trailer. Dev cycle for games like this is 1-2 years, so if they're not at least halfway done by now then that means it's being put aside for something else, which we would see a trailer.

Going quiet until the end of 2017 doesn't make sense for them.

Personally, I'm biased against radar, but maybe you're the kind of person that likes having it. Definitely makes ECM less painful.
>LB3
You better be really good at landing hits with a blade because that's the shortest blade in the game and it has a long reload time. Granted, you're ripping out about 1500-2000 AP in a hit.

Both. Melee UWs take up the whole arm plus two back slots, wrapping around one shoulder.

Some UWs (like giga missile) only take up the back slots and don't have a wrap-around arm component.

They're not technically shoulder weapons in V/VD because shoulder units are internal in those games.

Learn to boost hop by pressing X frequently while moving around and as soon as you land on the ground while moving you should keep your momentum and move a lot faster and can keep enemies on target.

After you master boost hopping everything else should come to you naturally.

Dark Souls/Demon Souls/Bloodborne for better or worse did make a ton of faggots who actively jacked off over how the souls franchise is the greatest thing ever and anything From does is a masterpiece (I had a few friends like that) and would probably buy anything else with there name stuck on it

The size of your lockbox is governed by your FCS and the lock type of the weapon you have active. Just note that larger boxes usually have shorter range.
But then again, if you're using something like a machine gun or a shotgun, then it's not like you need much range anyway.
>>
>>174339648
You can remap the controls in every game anon. It'll be somewhere in the options menu.

Also if you're using an emulator, you can remap the emulator controls on top of everything else and give the games traditional twin stick movement controls. It takes a bit of work to get it all mapped out right but it's totally worth it and makes the games a lot funner.

I still played through the entirety of the PS1 games using the default controls though. It just doesn't feel right doing it any other way.

Oh I remember this one.
So a few years back, Cheng decided to hold a conquest event. I forget how the scoring system worked, but there was a list of approved referees and you had to hire one as a merc to get credit for team fights. One of the referees was the leader, or at least the face, of a team that was participating.
Shockingly, that team pulled a huge lead out of nowhere stupid fast.
But it gets better. People started to call Cheng out on this and he defended it with something along the lines of >well, I'm not seeing it happen

>Dark Souls/Demon Souls/Bloodborne for better or worse did make a ton of faggots who actively jacked off over how the souls franchise is the greatest thing ever
people praise from because they are genuinely incredible games. i see people claim about jacking off etc. but i just don't see it happen, i just see genuine praise labelled as that by bitter people.
demon's souls was one of those magical games that only a relatively small amount of people could play at the time of its release and thus the threads were not only relatively shitpost-free, they were full of good content, and i don't remember a single person claiming it was the best thing ever.
same with dark souls - that is until at least the PC version came out and then everything went to shit. people started accusing others of miyazaki dick riding as soon as one claimed to like miyazaki. this flavour of hyperbole is not uncommon among the PC crowd and unfortunately it seems to have transcended into reality despite only rarely occurring.
then along comes bloodborne, where the shitposting levels were became immeasurable. you had a group of people desiring to discuss a legitimately awesome game and you had an opposing group who wanted to ruin that discussion in every way imaginable.
and hey, if i'm being ignorant and just unaware of the actual high level of miyazaki dickriding taking place - who cares? let dickriders ride dicks.
however, don't put regular ole fans - particular those who see the undeniable uniqueness to miyazaki's games and want to discuss it - into that basket because it isn't constructive and serves to reinforce a false narrative that i've never actually seen
there are a lot of us who like miyazaki because he hasn't disappointed us yet. DeS was unique. DaS was fantastic. DaS II was mediocre and a lot of people attribute it to the lack of miyazaki touch, which reinforced his "legend" status. then BB came out and it's on par with the DaS. there's a reason people like miyazaki.

>>174436950
Jeck please, the rose tint is real.
Dark Souls had killed the community well before PC got in on the action. At its outset, the population was immeasurably larger than that of Demon's Souls and the terrible trend the internet has shifted to had already begun its work.

As odd as this sounds, I hope they just keep it to one intro cinematic. Don't have them scattered throughout the game. That way they can put all the polish into that singular one, while reserving the rest of the plot for in-game cutscenes. That would better appropriate the already small budget that you know the game will have.

Well, there's a bunch of different flavors of that, so you're going to have to be more specific. Also, I forgot what the acronym stood for, so I looked it up and got triggered.
Anyway, you won't be able to make a 1:1 Scopedog due to a lack of two-hand weapons and trinocular heads. Still, I think you're looking at a midweight with a CE core and anything with rounded shoulders, I think TE arms give you the best options for that. Rifle of your choice on an arm, I'd go with the Tansy, and then a piledriver on the other arm. Missiles of your choice in the shoulder. I think you'll want to go with a single shoulder arm for cosplay purposes. There are cases of a Scopedog equipping weapons on both shoulders, but as far as I remember, those cases were:
>cannon + missile
>smoke grenade + missile
And not missile + missile. But then again, maybe there was one and I just forgot.

Hey all, mech game dev here. It's been a couple weeks since I've last visited. Here's a small progress update if you guys are interested.

This is the camera drone that follows the player around and serves as the third person camera.
>>
>>174622404
>the camera drone that follows the player around and serves as the third person camera
That's actually a pretty funny idea. Though why does the camera need an ingame model if you'll never actually see it?
>>
>>174622794
You can see it sometimes, and I'm working on features that will make it a smarter-than-normal camera, such as pathing to ovoid objects it is swinging towards instead of just smacking into the or clipping through.

This is the ring-less version, which some other anons suggested they like better but it goes against all the others I've designed based off having a ring.

I'm also not sure on a title. I'm floating around Mass Destruction.

A
>>

There a reason why you need a camera drone following the player? I think it's a cool idea, but it feels a tad unnecessary.

It serves as the third person camera, that's it. It just has a mesh attached to it now.

you can use it for free exploration of the maps or something, you could even justify it existence if you make the setting something like big gladiadors mecha show or something along those lines.

It's in-game justification of the third-person view, which is cool.
Although this does make me wonder, can the cameras be attacked?
>>174623080
I prefer it with the ring, but it might not be a bad idea to include some ringless designs. Fluff it as the latest technological development and whatnot.

>we have a ton of faggots who praise From and claim to be their fans, yet they've never even heard of Armored Core or hate it for dumb reasons.
yeah, that much is true and it's unfortunate
i'm just bitter at how the more popular a thing becomes, the more it gets automatically vilified.
just to throw out some examples shinji mikami is barely a household name anymore but his past work is universally praised (ie. not popular = constructive discussion)
kamiya got more popular only because of twitter and people basically started hating on his games just because he was easily trolled - he's basically the father of modern fast paced 3d action games and yet his twitter sperg-outs garner more attention than the work he's done
kojima is... well kojima, you can't even discuss him anymore on the internet anymore despite the unique traits he brings to his games
then you have miyazaki a genuinely passionate guy who's proven it through his work and has been rewarded immensely for it, but you say one praise for the guy and you're a FROM-drone. i just see it happen and it stifles good conversation and makes me bitter because his contribution to the medium is undeniable.
there's no hate boner for games like vanquish or okami, or even snatcher, because not enough people have played them. give something enough time in the spotlight and it becomes easy to hate for that reason alone - people begin to ignore the positive traits just to sustain their contrarian hate boner, and it's happened with miyazaki and it sucks because (unlike the others above), he hasn't fucked up in my eyes. yet.

I haven't 100% fleshed out all the camera controls. Originally I wanted to have a slave unit that you can send out to track targets remotely or take manual control of while your mech goes into an auto pilot mode. I haven't determined if I want the cameras able to be attacked/damaged, especially since the main one is one of the only views into the game world for the player, and I feel like messing with the primary camera that much might be sloppy game design.

Ideas I've flirted with:
>take manual control of a second drone to mark/track targets
>the same drone can provide a stronger lock (for weapons that need it)
>drone can launch a stun EMP
>drone can possibly be damaged
>drone can be used to repair mech

These would all be functions of the secondary drone, though. I want to keep the shenanigans with the primary one to a minimum, because as I've said, it serves as the primary third person camera.

> and actually market it properly this time around.

From doesn't control marketing for their games outside of Japan, that's what Bandai Namco does. Bandai did a poor job marketing for Dark Souls, too. Most of the sales came from the reviews and word of mouth for the game because the early pre-patch editions of the game were legitimately hard as fuck (curse stacked, all enemies aggro'd before you could see them, bosses didn't drop humanity, drop rates were lower, couldn't lock on to forest NPCs, and had a lot more enemies with clustered placement) so it got a lot of free press from pure difficulty alone.

Sales for dark souls really didn't kick off until they released Prepare to Die, which did have actual marketing, and fixed all of those problems.

The only AC games with decent marketing were AC4 and (maybe) ACV. AC4 marketing was aimed at the 360 shooter market, ACV marketing used dubstep.

The only way we're going to get a decently-marketed AC game is if Sony picks up the franchise after Bandai and gives it the bloodborne treatment of TV ads, sponsored events, and promotional content.
>>
>>174277931
>>174277072
>>174276745
The main difference is that dark souls difficulty feels intuitive (reaction-time and memorization based) whereas AC difficulty seems confusing (stats and prediction).

Dark Souls works kind of on the same principle as a Platnium Games title, where you have to do careful inputs, but the game gives you obvious signals about what to do and when. It's usually pretty obvious when you have to roll and when enemies are open to be attacked.

AC doesn't give you ANY signals from enemies about what to do (except for a few bosses). And the older (PS1/PS2) titles are much worse about this. It's almost impossible to dodge a shot unless you predict when it's coming your way, so the casual player feels cheated and that the game is too 'clunky'. In AC you don't have a simple dodge>dodge>block>attack>dodge pattern, you're dodging AND attacking at the same time, and you have to take damage in order to deal damage usually.

So in order to even understand what you're doing wrong in AC, you have to understand the entire game. Dark Souls lets you get away with not understanding most of the game as long as you have good reaction time, but reaction time won't save you in AC if you don't know how the stats work.

It makes AC more in-depth, more complicated, and more difficult than DS, but that doesn't translate to a more fun experience except for hardcore players.
>>
>>174306206
Use the highest power booster you can that doesn't cause you to overheat when boosting normally.

Basically here's the formula:

(Booster Heat + Generator Heat) *2 - Cooling = Total Heat

So if your cooling is 14000, your generator heat is 4000, that means you have 6000 left (14000 - 8000 = 6000) and 6000/2 = 3000 booster heat. Anything above that will cause you to gain heat, and anything significantly higher (like 3300) will cause you to overheat really easily.

Birdie + highest cooling radiator + tune everything for cooling + G91 (or lotus) is a pretty solid combo.
>>
>>174315273
Change the control scheme.

For older AC games I find it's best to use D-Pad for movement, Triangle/Square/Circle/X for looking up/left/right/down, and then R-arm, L-arm, and boost on the R1/L1/R2 buttons.

That way you have a bit of a twinstick setup where you can look in one direction while moving in the other, and that makes targeting better.

Use a Wide and Shallow FCS to have a wider lock box, though your range will suffer, and use weapons that don't take a while to lock on.

Also learn to back away when you lose track of an enemy. The further away you are, the less turning speed is going to restrict your sight.
>>
>>174333787
>Does AC and Souls really have that large a crossover audience?

No, but they will.

Most Dark Souls fans treat AC like weird, mediocre games that aren't worth really playing, but they really want a souls-like game to be sci-fi. They can and will flock to whatever comes next, even if it's AC6, just to sate that need.

Every day people on /dsg/ are complaining and asking about what will From Soft do next, and the general already shit itself multiple times with Nioh and For Honor being proclaimed as the next game to play.

Unless AC6 is a complete fucking mess, you can guarantee we will get flooded with newfags.
>>
>>174334463
The PS1 era AC games are about on-par with Dark Souls for complexity. ACLR or ACV/VD are the peaks of complexity in the franchise( AC4/FA took a step backward).

Dark Souls is extremely reductive mechanically and minus all the multiplayer, graphics and level design, it's no more complex than Ocarina of Time.

From is a Westaboo company. They deliberately make western-style games for the JP market. That's why all their games are released with English titles, and a lot of them feature western themes.

>>174336087
He had a small part in ACLR's design, mostly in the world and character designs. But AC4 and ACFA are entirely his idea. ACFA's storyline actually matches up with dark souls story pretty identically, and the 3 endings for ACFA are the same as DS1/DS2.

>He though it was gonna be something super Japanese ala Gundam

AC4 and ACFA were closer to that, and that's why Bandai stepped in to take over the series. It was cutting into Gundam sales, so they turned it into a ground-based multiplayer-only shooter with ACV. (and also delayed the game's release by 2 years...)

A lot of the wanking over dark souls comes down to 3 things:

1. 90% of its 'innovation' was just bringing PS2-era RPG mechanics to PC gamers that had never seen it before.

2. It was widely marketed as "one of the hardest games ever" despite that not being the case. This is bandai namco's fault

3. Invasions mean you could pull unfair exploits on other players and feel like a god, so they act like it's a serious multiplayer game

The assholes who jerk over the series are the people who fell for those three things. Mostly PC or Xbox players that grew up on handholding shooters/mmos and had never played a traditional platformer/third person RPG and were shocked at a game that actually had good immersion and combat mechanics.

Thing is, now 5 years later most of the fans of dark souls realize those mistakes and don't act like that anymore. So while the wankery was real at one time, it's much less intense now.
>>
Not gonna bother que-ing everyone in who responded to my whole dark souls fan wanking comment, over all that was just a simple summary of the initial case of dark souls, obviously things have toned down by DS3, but Bloodborne did start the wanking a bit again.

But yeah, it kinda sucks that at this point I played AC4/ACFA/ACV/ACVD on the 360 (still played the others on PS2/1) I just hope that who ever does end up marketing it can do a good job with it, even if it it won't, I just hope it's not an exclusive (although with the whole Pro vs Scorpio thing now I'm a little bit concerned)

As for gameplay, I honestly hope that they keep AC6's technical level at V/VD but make the game a bit smoother like 4/FA.
>>
>>174658274
>As for gameplay, I honestly hope that they keep AC6's technical level at V/VD but make the game a bit smoother like 4/FA.

Go play Last Raven. Emulate it if you have to. That's the game you're thinking about. AC4/FA is actually built on LR's mechanics and use a lot of the same stats (they just changed the numbers to be "higher" in the stats screen), but LR was much more technical and complex in how the parts differed and what stats were important. So all the smoothness of ACFA was from ACLR.

ACLR is like ACVD in that swapping one or two parts out can cripple your AC strategically.

The reason VD doesn't feel as smooth is because they changed a lot about how the inputs worked, getting rid of progressive inputs and replacing them with on/off inputs (like kicking) so you couldn't transition as smoothly between different attacks and stuff. It made the gameplay more like dark souls / fighting games (where you were locked into an animation while doing something) but did make it feel considerably more clunky.
>>
>>174658274
>>174658661
whoops, missed your comment that you played the others on PS2/PS1.

Still, ACLR is probably the pinnacle of the series mechanically. ACVD is better for it's multiplayer and ACFA was a cooler experience, but both have a lot of issues that ACLR didn't.
>>
>>174658838
No problem

Now that I think about it, LR was fairly similar to what I'm thinking although I haven't played it in years so I really don't remember much of it.

But in V/VD I did like the more detailed explanation of weapons in terms of KE/CH/EN based, I think that was nice. Really did make it so you and to think about what your were taking into battle. (The teams of friends I briefly managed to play with in ACV unfortunately banked on me being a take all corners kind of AC which as we know has its ups in downs)

But the one thing that I still like about AC4/FA is that the AC just felt so distinct, they visually were extremely appealing while still remaining within Armored Core's design style.
>>
>>174659645
AC4/FA had miyazki's design, which means that parts weren't really supposed to be similar. Every part was dramatically different from other parts in some way (like Lahire vs Aaliya). The problem with this is that ACFA is also broken as fuck because there's a few weapons that are just absolutely overpowered. The parts also don't work well together or mix so you're basically stuck with cosplay builds.

I like ACLR more because it had a few archetypes, but had progression in the builds, and parts mixed really well.

Just look at how the head parts are organized:

Crest:
Head (no radar): 69S < 70S2 < 72S3 < 81S4
Head (Radar): 73E < 84E2 <95EE < 07EC
Head (Eye): Eye < Eye2 < Eye3 < Eye4
Head (special): 85SR < 06SR2

Mirage:
Head (No radar): Wasp < Wasp2
Head (Shell def) Beetle < LadyB < Longhorn <Dynastes
Head (En Def) Cicada < Cicada2 < Cricket < Pillbug
Head (Radar focus) Mantis < Spider < Scarab
Head (balanced) Queen < Mayfly < Sting < Drone
Head (special) Butterfly < Firefly

Pretty much every part in the game follows that kind of "series" logic with later parts getting overall but more specialized, so they mixed and matched really well.

The problem with ACFA is that they made all the parts SO unique that they could only be used in one way really.
>>
>>174661642
>Unique parts
I should have probably noted that as from an aesthetic stand point.

Certain pieces couldn't be intermixed at all and some weapons were definitely overpowered as fuck depending on which reg you played with.

I hope they make it so parts are distinct enough that you can at least tell the manufacturer at a glance, or if manufacturers keep signature themes running amongst their parts
>>
>>174662685
I think that the best way to that would be going with a mix of what FA and LR did

Each company have somekind of focus with their parts, like how Interior was full on energy weapons and defense, but in the new game and maybe it sequel, they will have the evolution serie that LR had, with the first part being a well balanced but with a small favor over energy defense and the newest part being full on energy defense, their weapons going from a well rounded laser rifle, to a Karasawa with few shots but each shot can cripple a AC; GA being a jack of all trades with a small favor to heavy weapons and shell defense, their end game being full on tank parts and the like.

on he aesthetic side, I think we could go a little with how VD was, while the lack of a manufacture on the parts can be a little misleading, some parts actually share something that made me think they were some kind of frame or same serie.

Take pic related here >>174552470
for example, the core and arms have those big spikes coming from them and are mostly rounded and no so boxy like other parts.

I can post more pics with other parts with same similiraties if you want,

there, just look at the head, core and legs (mostly the shield) they all have those small and square plates all over the place.

the legs on pic related is probably a heavy biped variant (going mostly for the shield) of the same serie.

With this, they could have corps with a distinctic focus (energy weapons, missiles, heavy or light frames, close range weapons or full sniper) and aesthetic, yet have a more overall common desing like in the classics game, 4 era had the problem that everthing was too unique to merge well with other parts most of the time; while V era had the problem of everthing looking similar most of the time.

"I care about story, feeling cool, and an easy game" = ACFA (20-30 hours of content, mostly because you have to replay 3 times to get the full story)

"I care about style, immersion, and fair difficulty." = AC4 (10 to 30 hours of content, shorter if you are good)

"I care about replay ability, hard mode, and lots of content to sink into" = ACVD (unlimited hours of content. It has 8 different hard modes, some very powerful post-game bosses, and a lot of sub systems to tweak with)

You can skip ACV, it's the only one that is kind of pointless without online. Just watch the story mission playthroughs on youtube.

I'd recommend ACVD if you're willing to stick with it and sink 100+ hours into the game. If you just want a more accessible single player game, ACFA is best for story, AC4 is best for mechanics/gameplay.

Change your controls around.

This is what I use:

R1 = R right weapon
L1 = Left Weapon
R2 = Jump/Boost Drive
L2 = High Boost / Kick
R analog = Look
L analog = Move
Scan Mode = R3
Glide boost = L3 (or deploy Recon if you spam recons a lot instead)

That lets you do all the basic movement, attack, and scan mode without moving your fingers around. (purge weapon, toggle boosters, recon, etc.) are infrequent enough actions that moving a finger off of one of the bumpers (claw) or off of the analog stick to press them is fairly easy.

>>
>>174700783
Hard Mode is the actual story. AC4 and ACFA are pretty short. AC3 is probably the longest game in the franchise, Nexus is second if you include both disks. ACFA is also the easiest.

Figuring out how to get higher ranks and improve in the game is the entire point. Story has never been a strong suit of From Soft, it's more about how the player is immersed in the mechanics, not the story.
>>
So assuming AC6 is a thing this year, who is hopping that the music follows 4/FA choir style with a mix of things like nine-ball's theme?

God no, I am so burned out on annoying choral music in video games.

Bring us back to electronic ambient music. It's already popular again. If they gave us a soundtrack that was on-par with VD's DLC music (best music since SL, I think), that would be great.
>>
>>174703207
>God no, I am so burned out on annoying choral music in video games.
This, but the way it's done in AC4 is actually really cool. The tracks actually feel unique instead of just being random chanting. And it actually fits the tone of the game instead of feeling tacked on. FA's soundtrack wasn't as good and didn't feel as fitting, but it was a decent attempt.

>If they gave us a soundtrack that was on-par with VD's DLC music (best music since SL, I think), that would be great.
Definitely agree with this though. The AC4 type tracks only work for a specific tone and aesthetic, I'd rather have the more classic electronic style soundtracks for the next game.

Personally I thought AC3 and SL had the best music, the mix of electronic with rather dark orchestrations really did it for me. It was such a tonal shift from the poppy techno from AC2 before it, it really helped sell the feeling that AC3 was something darker and different, even if gameplay-wise it was the same.

I also liked the abundance of bass guitar in the Nexus and AC4 soundtrack, so I wouldn't mind seeing that come back either. Bass guitar and giant robots go well together.

It's an interesting idea but the two problems are how to implement the command in a game already using every button and several combinations therein, as well as clipping issues. FROM doesn't care too much for small clipping issues but in a game like AC where torsos and arms come in all shapes and sizes that'd be really hard.

Realistically? Places close to the center of gravity where they can easily transmit force to the rest of the chassis (no compression/bending/crumpling). Something like ACFA's shoulder or leg boosters make no sense, since they would push the shoulders/legs away before actually moving the AC.

Stylistically? Bottom of chest (in the rib area), back (shoudlerblades).

Any of them, really. You're going to be slow and clunky no matter what starting out, so they all feel fast by comparison. It's not until you beat a few of the games that you get comfortable with them enough to be limited by speed.

The fastest-moving combat is probably ACFA (PS3/360). But the actual pace of combat is slow and it takes a while to kill things because everyone can dodge so fast.

Fastest-paced combat is probably Nexus or LR (PS2, LR is on PSP), you can kill people incredibly fast and fights feel sort of like a DPS race.

Most reaction-time based (quick, heavy-hitting strategies) is ACVD (PS3). There's a lot of OHKO strategies that just require preparation and reaction time.

Slowest is probably AC3, but it's the one I would recommend most for beginners because of how well designed it is.

>I like his designs but i want it at a 4/4a proportions.
I'd prefer 4/4a proportions over V, but I personally liked PS2 proportions. Probably just because those were the ones I played and enjoyed the most, but I felt they were more streamlined overall. 4 and especially 4a designs got a bit crazy when adding things like extensions and stuff, peaking at slapping the wing cannons on WG core. I also preferred how the arm weapon in the older games felt like they stayed a more reasonable size. Some were large sure, but 4/4a had guns rivaling the back-mounted cannons in size, and then some of the cannons had to get stupid big to compensate. I'd much rather take a king-size cannon like the LX or MAC over 4a's ridiculous C.E.O. cannon

Only the ps2 ac games and emulated the first one.
But i like the size and perportions of the 4th gen mixed with kawamori's design(white glint).

Definitely preferred them the most for over all aesthetics, but I do feel like with the next one they should try to keep weapons somewhat in proportion. Depending on if the keep ACV/VD's all arm weapons instead of back and shoulder weapons, (I want actual back weapons back) I wouldn't mind see overed weapons and assault armor make some sort of return

I'm revamping every stat in the game and changing some of the mechanics.
>Weight and Defense are absolute tradeoffs now, no way to have higher defense without lower speed
>weapon DPS is traded with lock speed and size (that includes missiles and lock on time)
>boosters range from high accel (boost hop but low speed) to high power (can't boost hop but high top speed)
>ranges are limited more by weapons, not FCS now
>weapons have different lock types (WS, STD, ND, SPC rifles)
>WS ranges are a lot lower, requiring you to get in people's faces to do good damage
>largest lock size is always from pairing your weapon with the FCS, no more using WS weapons to "boost" FCS size
>turning speed is amped up, so that you can fight cqc now without having to joust/slowly turn
>turning speed and jumping ability are trade offs
>stability is overall lower, def is overall higher, but weapons do more per-hit damage, less about DPS racing and more about evasion
>high stun weapons have low reload times now

That's just a few off the top of my head.

There's also a few major problems in Vanilla LR that I'm fixing:
>Underweighting legs means you can get really high defense with no speed penalty
>Boost accel is a negligible stat, and Gull / TP trivialize most booster classes
>there are gen/boost/rad combos that are absolutely superior (more speed, less drain, less heat) than other combos, making some parts pointless
>turning speed differences are so high that out-turning an enemy is the ideal strategy

These changes are going to make it more about range control, matching your weapons with your FCS, booster, leg, and core type. In the test versions I'm running now, combat feels more like ACVD in that you're usually vulnerable any time there is a line of sight to the enemy, so you have to either get inside / outside of their effective range, find cover, or overheat them, stun, etc. in order to avoid damage. It makes some enemies like Jack-O significantly more of a threat.

You really think so? I prefer the classic PS1/PS2 style over the new ones but the first one is so clunky, and hasn't aged well. And that goddamn final mission with the platforms. If you're gonna start with a PS1 game, MoA is the best I think
>>

i've found the first game up until LR is in the same 'realm' of clunkiness, so it's still workable. plus it conveys that feeling of piloting a giant machine well.
also i like the story setup of the first game, and it's nice not to be bombarded with 100+ parts the first time you enter the shop - there's a smaller degree of progression than the other games, but that makes it less likely to overwhelm a new player.
though i will concede, the final mission is pure bullshit.
i remember liking MoA a lot but i only played through it once on an emulator. i will have to do it again some time.

The gameplay is the same, so it took some thinking about what felt clunky about the first game and not the PS2 ones without going into unavoidable limitations like framerate, and what I came up with was that stability in AC1 like wasn't even a thing. Everything stunned the fuck out of you and knocked you around. AC2 and 3 had the same gameplay and controls, but still played waaay better

>nerf DINGO2 legs

This was literally the starting point for the mod. Dingo2 are probably the single most egregiously overpowered part in the game.

MoA is a better place to start, but the eye-searing neon graphics (including ~20fps framerate) and floaty/unresponsive controls of the first generation generally make the gameplay way more intimidating for first timers.

AC2
ACSL
ACVD
ACNX
ACMOA
ACFA

So let me ask you this /acg/
Do you think the success of Dark Souls/Bloodborne will have an influence on AC6? Perhaps some influence on game mechanics, but I'm thinking more the fact that FROM has become a much more recognizable name now. Come E3, you can bet your ass people will pay attention the second FROM SOFTWARE appears on screen at some big conference. And if it turns out to be AC6, more people who may have heard of Armored Core in passing but otherwise never checked it out, will now give the game a look since it's by "The Dark Souls guys"
>>
>>174832083
I think it's like everything outside of the Primal Armor is harmed by particle contamination, but the particles are never inside or attached to/on the AC.
>>
>>174832221
>Do you think the success of Dark Souls/Bloodborne will have an influence on AC6?

Absolutely. It already had an effect with ACV/VD.

There are a lot of people who will buy AC6 purely because they liked dark souls, and had never played a souls game prior. It's going to be awful but there will at least be sales. The company is getting large enough now that they can throw money at problems, unlike before. DS3 was a huge example of that.

The success of their next game will determine whether or not souls was a one-hit-wonder or if they can keep up the competency. As a result, they're making themselves "too big to fail" so that even if the next game is mediocre, it will maintain people's confidence in the company. All the new hires and expanding to multiple titles is just building a buffer zone so that even if 1 or 2 of the next 3 games are bad, they won't go out of business anymore. This is good, since even with dark souls they were still living and dying 1 game at a time. Imagine if bloodborne had been a flop...

Probably Armored core will get more larger, harder hitting mobs instead of dealing small little shits like tanks or helicopters. But I don't think anything would stray too much, since essentially Demon Souls is essentially a prototype made from Kings Fields combat, Evergrace enchanment system, and the cross inventory access is adapted from Lost Kingdoms 2. No AC elements were included, only From Software genuine numbers and convoluted stats galore are new and fresh.

I'm not sure if making it open world is a good idea too, as AC are not known for healing on combat site, so estus flask is a big no. Mission design should let us go through the same hell induced routine of getting yourself lowered to less than 50% health and then face two bosses at once. Or face 4 bosses at the get go.

That's how hardcore we went through for years, and the outrage would be out of proportion if there are healing methods.
>>
>>174833303
Did you even play ACV? Or did you just watch the meme cutscenes on youtube like everyone else? From already introduced a pretty good healing mechanic for AC games with calling in resupply ships at secured landing zones. Not to mention the fact that the older games have plenty of two part missions where you get healed to full AP halfway in.

I definitely don't want full on Souls type on the fly healing, but longer missions with opportunities to resupply have always been a thing and I wouldn't mind seeing it again in AC6.
>>
>>174832957
>The success of their next game will determine whether or not souls was a one-hit-wonder or if they can keep up the competency.
Is it really fair to call Souls a "one-hit-wonder" after 5 successful games though?
>>
>>174833303
>outrage would be out of proportion if there are healing methods.

I remember how fucking easy the long story mission on V are if you call rosary mid mission, you can even change parts! is good that doing the missios withouth using them adds to the score, since it promotes to plan ahead and no just run to the nearest safe zone to restock ammo or change weapons.
>>
>>174833867
"one franchise wonder" might have been a more accurate term.

Though the general consensus I've read is that Bloodborne and Dark Souls 1 were the only games that got massive critical acclaim, and Bloodborne had SIE Japan Studio involved. If bloodborne had flopped, it very much would have been a one hit wonder.

Now I never played Demons Souls but assuming it's more or less identical to Dark Souls, there's a few parallels. Like how different armor and weight influence movement, stamina = generator, rings = optional parts

>That's how hardcore we went through for years, and the outrage would be out of proportion if there are healing methods.
Before Nexus, you healed and resupplied whenever there was a loading screen.
>>
>>174833824

>>174833303
This.

A souls-like armored core would just be the ACV story missions, but expanded across all the maps, maybe with fast travel between regions with questlines for missions. The garages in ACV were effectively bonfires.

Honestly, I loved the way they did story missions in ACV, I just wish the rest of the game was good enough to make it fun. Good idea, poor execution. I'm glad they went back to something more standard for ACVD though, since that let them focus on making the rest of the game better.
>>
>>174834383
>Before Nexus, you healed and resupplied whenever there was a loading screen.

Little tidbit: all PS1/PS2 Armored Core games are split into 2 states: Combat, and Garage mode. Stats for combat and stats for garage mode are stored differently in the data (you can use a cheat device to make the garage stats change, but it won't affect their combat stats, and vice versa). This is also why H+ doesn't show up in the garage in your stats either, it's purely a combat mode modifier.

The fact that you healed during loading screens for 2-part missions was probably just a convenient effect due to the fact that the game re-loaded your AC from scratch and didn't maintain damage levels.

I didn't really use the resupply thing, since I rely on rockets to clear the large mobs that runs on tracks (I forgot what's it is called) so I never had to heal, the game was designed to clear without having to rest. I mean sure it resembles Bonfires, but if there is Estus Flask system, it would ruin the whole PvP mechanics.

On the topic of checkpoints and bonfires, I think they shouldn't provide an "easy" way to give players time to backtrack for resupply and rearm just next to boss area, but instead provide them inbetween mission areas that is twice as long.

Checkpoints are very welcome though.

Estus chugging when dodging missiles and sawas? And I can't imagine the salt on the forums already;

A lot of AC elements were included in demon's souls, but they were purely in the stats, not in the gameplay mechanics.

The damage types in DeS and their formulas are very similar (just with a few changed coefficients) to the EH/SH Def of AC. Stamina works like energy (it even operates under the same principle where you are always "consuming" or "gaining" stamina. It wasn't until AC4 that it was turned into competing rates, aka, you could regenerate while boosting). Only difference is that DeS allows for negative stamina, and AC does not.

While the main attacks of DeS are different, the items, spells, and miracles were the same as AC. They had a scroll-through with an activation button.

After ACV introduced full ambidextrous weapons, Dark Souls 2 introduced ambidextrous weapons too.

Bloodborne's weapon transformations are basically the 2 modes of weapon arms.

Also, Armored Core was the first to introduce charge attacks, which were applied to DS3.

And my favorite: Demon's Souls cutscene graphics and filters were taken straight from ACFA:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3SsyxRqv5E

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfCO7ihxZlY

It should also be noted that a lot of AC1's mechanics (and engine) were shared with King's Field too, the graphics are even very similar, AC is just more advanced, so something like ACV is a case of having a game that started with a King's Field engine, became it's own engine, then influenced DeS, which then went back and influenced AC again, coming full circle.

While they don't share much overall, there are a lot of little From-isms that are shared between them.

Generally in PvE that's fine but expensive (Ammunition costs get deducted from mission payouts), but its effectiveness in PvP really depends on the game. AC2 had really strong missiles with ridiculous tracking, AC3-Ninebreaker could be effective but you had to ge creative with mixing different missile types/trajectories, Last Raven increased mo cement speed without altering weapon speed to compensate, so missiles were better off used a distraction away from some other more primary weapon, and the same goes for AC4 and 5, with the exception of a rare few missile launchers that were quite good on their own.

Overall, souls has better bosses, but they're repetitive and the hype dies quickly because of it.

The best souls bosses are nothing compared to the hype built around the best AC bosses (Nine Ball Seraph, Motherwill, the ACV and VD unidentified bosses, the pulverizers, Massive MT, etc.)

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that in souls, by the second area you're already knowing when to expect bosses and what they will do. But when a Pulverizer or massive MT randomly shows up, or another AC NPC "invades" your mission, it's a huge "OH SHIT" moment. There's only 2-3 per game but holy shit are they good.

The only game that doesn't have meaningful boss fights, I think, is Nexus. All you really have is Agraya and Genobee, and the ending boss is anticlimatic.

Like, read down this list and think to yourself how much more epic each fight felt in the context of the game

>AC1 Massive MT

>Nine Ball Seraph
>AC2 first Martian biped MT you fight

Depends on the game and who you're fighting. Countermeasures for missiles are a lot better in fourth and fifth gen than they are for the rest of the series, but once you learn the trick for each missile type in third gen, they become very easy to dodge. Like, 90% evasion rate. On top of this, there's a game that has a section specifically dedicated to making you learn these tricks.
So basically, what you have is an all-or-nothing setup. If your opponent isn't good at dodging missiles and didn't bring anything to deal with them, you stand a good chance of raping face. If your opponent can dodge missiles well and/or brought something to deal with them, you're SOL.
But on a side note, it's very much not viable in ACV.
>>174832083
I assume the particles are solid due to the connotation of the word particle. So it probably can accumulate on surfaces, but I imagine NEXTs don't have to deal with that a whole lot due to that whole movement thing.
Kojima also have to have some kind of half life, which is probably very lengthy considering the gap of time between fourth and fifth gen.
But ultimately, I'd say it's probably safe because I'm hard pressed to believe that there are no cleaning procedures. I'm pretty sure humanity would've died pretty quick if there wasn't some kind of way to clean off Kojima on a small scale.

>Invades your mission

Anon, you do realize that their could be something glorious with an invade system in AC?

We still don't know ow what will happen with AC6, but if they pull any sort of open world like setup, invades could be a thing, plus it wouldn't be lore breaking at all especially if companies are kept around.

>You could get payed for fucking up your friend mission

As long as their is a way to toggle it for newer players and having some limits put on it like DS, I could see that being a cool thing

Verdict Day hits the speed at the right note familia. Now if only the movement is Gen1 era based (unrestricted flying but drains energy fast like in older games), and flying build vs groundslide build have some mechanics in the stats.

And actually bring back heat as a balancing point for boost spamming and make efficient boosters relevant again.

That's something I thought about daydreaming at work. They don't even need to have an open world, they could just make it so you can contract with a corporation, sort of a mix between the factions chosen in VD and Dark Souls covenants. Instead of arbitrary spaces on a map, you can defend your employer corporation against other players taking missions against them, and gain rewards.

You know that new function they added in ACV where you could kick shit, and kick damage took into account your mass and speed?

I want that expanded upon to include punchs and body slams. I want to be blasting down a hallway in my heavy biped chasing some light reverse joint fag with dual rifles, and just go HURRRGGHHHH and crush him into a wall like a bug.

It was the funniest shit to use a tank in Verdict Day and let those blading faggots get close to me thinking they've got me but then cave their teeth in with the front end up my tank tracks with a boost kick that takes off 70% of their health in one go.
>>
>>174849780
Maybe, but there should be some more stipulations. Equipping a melee weapon shouldn't be a detriment in close range combat
>>
>>174850210
There could be some manner of 'recoiling' system, where the user takes some damage as well. I mean, kicking in 5th gen is done so in a manner that would minimize damage to the attacker. Bipeds smash into things with the knee-shield, reverse-joints use their pointed heels, tanks either have piles on the treads or are just that friggin' heavy. Not exactly sure how a quad does their kick without some sort of structural damage, but it's not a flawless example, I guess.

Still, most of the legs in V/D are designed with a kick animation that wouldn't really cause much damage back to the wielder. If those same ACs were nailing things with shoulder charges, and said shoulders didn't crumple at least a little, possibly jamming the missile bay doors, then I'd call some bullshit.
>>
>>174849780

That always made me wonder: how in the sweet hell do you kick with a tank tread?
>>
>>174849780
>takes off 70%

Anon, if you aren't straight up one-shotting things with a tank kick, especially melee ACs, then you're doing something wrong, or at the very least sub-optimally.
>>
>>174853716
>There could be some manner of 'recoiling' system, where the user takes some damage as well. I mean, kicking in 5th gen is done so in a manner that would minimize damage to the attacker
That sounds pretty reasonable actually.

>Not exactly sure how a quad does their kick without some sort of structural damage
IIRC quads basically wall-jumped off the enemy. In animation if not functionality.

I know what you mean, the surprise factor is great, specially if the mission briefing doesnt give much hint about what you are going to find, an after playing some of the games, one basically tries to prepare for something, just to get another surprise

When I played VD, on the mission where you fight the last of the reaper squad, goddamn that it was tough the first time, at first I didnt know how to deal with the sniper cannon, wasting ammo and AP, after that, was dealing with the tank and its 2 UNACS, that was the hardest part for me, and when I innocently thought that it was over, fucking Magnolia Curtis.
>>
>>174842238
seeing how the backstory for Chief and Carol said that their original mission was to find a way to get rid of KP and they failed, forcing the corps to leave earth, I dont think you can clean them, maybe displace them, if NEXTs can somehow mantain the particles around them and move them with them to certain extend, they could probably create the first safe heaven by creating something that could concentrate the already existence KP on certain zones, leaving small areas clean. those zones being the contaminated zones and the City on V
>>
>>174846017
That would require an extremely large scale. Cleaning something up to the size of an AC should be a lot easier than that, and maybe I just don't know enough about radioactive cleanup, but it seems like all you'd really need to do is scrub/wash off residue before bringing it in to some kind of place that sees a lot of human activity.
>>
>>174853980

>how do you kick with a tank

You literally just ram the front end of the tank tracks into peoples faces.
>>
>>174845189
I think that we could have by implementing the long story mission that V had, enough time to find both cooperators and invaders, and having differents point where a invader can appear, even if it means during a fight agains a gigant MT or special weapon.

Just so you know, playing missiles only is akin to being an INTfag in Souls. It's not really bad, but it does have those moments where you are pretty much a deadweight.

AC1 - AC Master of arena have certain missile setups that you can cheese AC fast. Micro missiles are fun in PS2 games, and they even have handheld missiles so you can enjoy roleplay as macross jesus.

Missiles area bit cumbersome against smaller targets, and most multitarget missiles drain EN so high, you left with power regen less than powergrid of Ghana. And their locktime is comparable for a new Armored Core to release. So it is kind of wise to stick with single target, multilock missiles.

Though, for example ACFA regulation 1.00 with Itano Circus setup on Lahire can be pretty cancerous.

ACV and ACVD depends on your damage triangle to kill stuff, but generally they just dont have enough ammo to be a primary weapon, and the missile arms are a gamble.

>>174834383
I played all AC1, Another Age and 3, and Silent Line.
>Before Nexus, you healed and resupplied whenever there was a loading screen.

My memories are kind of wavering, I can't remember. I mean the only one is final mission for Nineball in Master of Arena after you beat all three of his clones.

And now you said it, we need optional parts again. And remove the tuning thing, it ruins everything because I keep maxing weight limit
>>
>>174839765
Also I have to add, heat system in AC2 - AC Nexus is very fun to play. If you like missiles, Cluster missiles can fuck anyone's day and left with no energy, and suck their health away pre nexus.

If you like for more style points, Micro Missiles are the one you want to get. And as another extra do check out this video for a missile connoisseur.

>Concentrate the already existing particles
The idea makes sense, but at that point, you're basically making stationary bombs where ever you put the condensers as that's the principle assault armor operates on. All it takes is another terror group to start activating them.
>>
>>174885987
seeing how nobody knows what KP is on V, and just refer to, and its effect on the ambient ,as "contamination" they probably forgot such condensers existed, and the contaminated areas became so weird because of the high concentration of KP, just see the introduction on the final mission of V, there is like 2 tornados, you barely see the sky and the ground is barren. even if the condenser failed over time, it doenst mean they will explote

Even if you say about such terror groups existed just after FA happened, the zones were those condenser were, would be really dangerous places to go, and with the loss of much of the technology, making deep journeys, right to the heart of the contamination, would be really dangerous and probably the only ones with access to such thing were drones or KP resistant MTs, like the ones you see inside the spheres on 4.

Sometimes I wonder if invasions were originally intended to be an AC thing but got put in Demon Soul's instead because they couldn't get it to work right. Partnership in ACFA already works like white phantom summoning in DS.

Invasions fit the world of AC so much more, too. A lot of the games have your missions surprise-interrupted by NPCs or major enemies, which makes sense in a mercenary context.
>>
>>174887462
The one thing I do fear is people squad banking you during missions. I love this and I think this is a great idea, but there definitely need to be limits put on or even a toggle.

For a limit though, it could be done as in the company/employer is only willing to pay a certain amount and how ever is host/squad leader divides it up, of course you need to make it so the the potential damages and cost of your invade are an actual factor

pretty much like how V/VD did their multiplayer missions if I recall correctly
>>
I only just started ac3 last night and haven't played any title in the series before.
Movement is pretty difficult for me so far and I don't know how not to get hit by things consistantly, or if that is at all possible in some situations. Also, should I be buying parts for a build that I think I would enjoy or should I buy what I think would help the most in an immediate mission and spend the reward money on equipment for the next mission?
>>
>>174890272
Learn to bunny hop and you'll get the hang of things really fast. You have to repeatedly tap X (or whatever you remapped your jump/boost button to) to boost off the ground, then boost again right as you land to slide a little, then just repeat. You'll constantly regain energy from releasing your thrusters so often, but you'll also be picking up and maintaining a lot of speed. On top of that you're also constantly taking evasive action and making it harder to be hit. This is basically the entry level meta to every PS1 and PS2 AC game.

Also keep in mind that trading damage with enemies is actually pretty common and even a viable strategy as long as you can deal more DPS than they can. If you're fighting something annoying, like an enemy with machine guns, sometimes you'll just have to slug it out and focus more on dealing damage than evading it. You do want to try and evade as much as possible though.

You should usually spend your money on parts that complement your main build, but sometimes you do need mission specific gear. For example a couple water missions are borderline impossible if you don't have hover legs.

Remember to fight in the arena often when you need extra cash, it's easy money until you get to the very top of it.

And also remember that you can remap your controls from the options menu. Most people play with a custom setup if the default controls feel too weird.
>>
>>174889356
Some sort of threat priority would be nice, where the missions would be harder if you had multiple people, or having mission objectives that a single person could complete without fighting all the invaders directly, and make only 1v1 scenarios a mandatory victory.

I imagine a scenario where your mission is to destroy all the MTs and then escape, and if you go in with partners, there are more MTs and your time limit is shorter, and for each enemy AC that has jumped in to oppose you, the time limit gets longer and there are fewer MTs.
>>
>>174890272
Customize your controls, think carefully about how you want to move and practice a lot. The difficulty isn't in the enemies, it's in the way you interact with the game.

You should build for the mission, but don't drastically change styles or you will be too uncomfortable with the controls.

The game is made so that you should do the Arena mode to practice your build and try new things, since there's no repair/ammo costs and you can buy/sell items as much as you want.

Remember that enemies DO have target leading (and so you do) so to avoid a hit you have to change directions. So that means moving up and down, left and right a lot. Moving fast in one direction won't really help you avoid damage.
>>
>>174890272
>Also, should I be buying parts for a build that I think I would enjoy or should I buy what I think would help the most in an immediate mission and spend the reward money on equipment for the next mission?
Yes.
Although, at first you should probably focus more on what you think will be most effective. This will give you a broader experience with the various weapons and leg types so you can form a more well-rounded opinion on what you like.
Then once you're better at the game and have a firm grasp of your preferences, focus on trying to beat the game through sheer stubbornness.
Well, except for the water-based massive weapon, screw that thing. Always use hovers and rockets on it.
>>174863598
KP shields? My headcannon is that they're somewhat corrosive, which is why ballistic rounds get so much of their damage blocked by PA and energy weapons hold up so well. The actual bullets are being eaten by the Kojima, but there's still enough that it hits the AC.
>>
>>174894751
Wanst the cannon explanation on how primal works, that when on high enough concentration and a force being applied to it, KP takes a semi solid state, this allow for a sudden wall to appear round the NEXT when a projectile comes close reducing most of the damage done
>>
>>174892193
The hardest part is trying to aim while flying. Moving the window up and down while strafing and turning the opposite direction without going too far or running into something is difficult to think about.

The camera feels kinda slow but I might just be used to high sensitivity fps analog sticks.

ACFA is still a good place to start. The rest I listed are just -better-.

The main problem with ACFA is that a lot of players get ruined by it and the rest of the series feels awkward/slow/boring by comparison. ACFA's flaws don't really show up until you start diving into the game more in-depth and realize it's problems, whereas the other games start off clunky but get better the more you play it (especially 3rd gen).

How about "random" special missions that have randomized goals and events? Kinda like the chalice dungeons from bloodborne but better. And then you can get invaded or get help from other ACs

For AC6 I mean. I think maybe ACVD has something like that online? I never played it online
>>
>>174921268
I think the one thing the AC series is gonna suffer from is the fact that it hasn't ever really been covered in depth, so finding any sort of explanation is rather hard for event. Again, as much as I loved ACV/VD, I was constantly lost in what was happening because things were presented well.

I just hope that in AC6 if there is some sort of invade/drop-in/drop-out system, that it's relatively explained it at least broken down enough to understand how it functions
>>
>>174921268
>I think maybe ACVD has something like that online? I never played it online
Nope. It had traditional coop where you start a lobby and have someone else join before actually starting the mission. There has never been any drop in/out features like Souls games.

It could be cool in AC6 though. I always thought the dropship deployment animations in V/VD looked really cool, it would be awesome having that happen in real time during a mission where the ship just flies over someone else's game and drops you into the middle of it to help.

The conquest matchmaking is pretty terrible. It prioritizes the in-game region and faction you're attacking more than whether or not there are humans online.

In order to get automatically paired up, both players have to be actively refreshing the matchmaking, without a priority region being attacked from their faction. If there's a priority region you'll just fight AI.

As for free battle, most people open their own rooms and send out a bunch of invites to their friends. Best way to get action on ACVD is to go make some PSN friends through here or the ac discord/reddit and then invite them whenever they're online. If you do this then it's pretty common to get a fight within ~30 minutes of logging in most of the time. There's probably about 50-100 weekly players, mostly on weekends.

The Japanese sever (buy a JP copy) is active enough, but because of the communication difference you won't get as fun matches, everyone plays to win and there's not much variety in the strategies. (No "fun" free battle rooms, most of the time it's someone trying to kite and run out the clock to win), but the few players who do want a serious challenge will gravitate toward teams on the JP side.

360 is pretty much dead. Only way you'll get matches there is if you actually convince someone else with a 360 copy to hop on and play with you.

>To improve framerate, reduce Anisotropic filtering (default is x16 for some reason, WAY too high.)
>For best visuals, make texture scaling, window size, and rendering resolution the same multiple (2x, 2x, 2x, etc.)
>Enable cache entire ISO in ram

Fixes for various problems:
>If you're having black screen flashes in garage or it seems choppy, disable frameskipping (frameskipping = off, auto frameskip = off)

>If you're stuttering during explosions and plasma, turn bezeir quality to low (test: fire plasma rifles in arena, or use that mission where the MTs fire two pink lasers at you)

>If you're stuttering during dust/dirt being kicked up, toggle mipmapping off (test: cutscene entering the mission where you fight the two ACs in the ac garage, when you land it kicks up a lot of dust)

The other graphics settings make little/no difference.

2x resolution is comfy for low-end laptops with integrated graphics (I can go up to 4x but it starts lagging on some missions)
my gaming PC can do 8x resolution easily, which is approximately 4k(edited)

So far my ac3 arena experience has been strange.

Some battles are trivially easy, and others take several tries using different builds.
On the difficult battles, my winning attempts leave me with either 10% or 90% armor.

Nocturne was the last one I defeated and I only won because he got stuck on a wall and couldn't shoot me. Most attempts he would get behind me and I could never seem to turn around fast or get away to shoot him.
How do I deal with that kind of stuff?
>>
>>175031808
I ended up cheesing a lot of the tougher arena enemies with a missile setup. I forget what it's called, but use the launcher that fires two missiles per lock on, then activate shoulder addon missiles along with it and you'll shred pretty much anything.

It feels unfair, but when all the late game ACs are running op-intensify I don't really give a shit.
>>
>>175033627
I usually cheesed them by setting the arena to the underground parking lot and shredding them with the flamethrower and machine gun combo
>>
>>175033925
I had to do that a couple times too.

Try out the shoulder addon thrusters that let you quickboost backwards, they help a lot with outmaneuvering really fast enemies and allowing you to dodge unpredictably. I can't play without them anymore on my main build.

It really depends on how your play style and weapon loadout matches the opponent. The AI doesn't get much stronger as you go up the arena but their builds do.

If you're DPS racing, then everyone will seem easy until you reach someone with a higher DPS weapon than you, and then you -just can't beat him- at all.

What kind of AC are you running? What's your control setup?
>>
>>175035810
The build I have mostly been using is a lightweight missile boat with a machinegun as a backup. I have a tough time dodging all the attacks that the #3 AC shoots and it only takes a few hits to kill me.
So I thought maybe a a tank would be better decision. I've tried combinations of flamethrower, machine gun, chain gun, grenade launchers, etc. the results haven't been too great.
I am pretty comfortable with the controls now and don't think that they are an issue. Are there any maneuvers or details that I am missing to stop them from getting behind me?
>>
>>175036978
>lightweight
>tough time dodging

Go heavy biped, but go with high turning speed (heavy) legs. If you aren't dodging his shots, then lightweight legs aren't helping you. A Tank might be extreme because it will lower your turning too much.

>stop them from getting behind me?

Use a wide or horizontal FCS, put your back against a wall, and learn to shoot at him while boosting backward. The trick to not letting him get behind you is to never have open space behind you.
>>
I really wanna play the new Armored Core games. I can get V or Verdict day on the Playstation Store right this minute, or I can order For Answer and wait like two weeks...

Are V and VD any good?
Which one is better?
>>
>>175036978
Also, Nocturne isn't notably powerful, but he is SUPER aggressive. So that shows that most of the time you're keeping a decent distance from enemies and getting overwhelmed whenever one can close in. That means you need to focus on maintaining distances and tracking the enemy better.

If you aren't using a radar, throw one on so that you can track their movements and turn to respond (so that your back is never to them). If you ARE using a radar, take it off so that you can learn to predict and play without one.

AC isn't really a game where you can swap one or two weapons to beat someone, you have to strategize your entire build around it.
>>
>>175037574
VD is better in almost every way. V's servers got shut down so if you want to play online there's no point in playing it at all, though the singleplayer is entertaining for one playthrough. For Answer is also pretty good, you should get it at some point if you can.

Also you probably shouldn't get them on PSN, they're probably a lot cheaper if you buy the discs used.

VD is much better than V and luckily the story doesn't really connect.

That being said the 5th gen is much different than previous generations. Most notably the scan mode. Its a mode you must enter to regen your energy at a faster rate and later on switching between your normal and scan modes is critical to managing you energy in the faster paced fights.

I would recommend VD though despite this, I find it an enjoyable game
>>
>>174966754
it was ok, I didnt like the focus on the arena, also short lived, there was room for improvem but was cancelled before anything could happen.
>>
>>175037574

For answer is a better single player experience (better story, more immersive) but it's a very short game and it's very easy / lacks depth. It also plays NOTHING like the other games, aesthetically. You can probably 100% in under 20 hours.

Verdict Day is a better overall game, but it is -very- difficult and very stats-heavy. It has a lot of depth, semi-active multiplayer (you can find people to play with around here still) and endless replay value. You can sink 200 hours into it and still not even scratch the surface of potential.

The other two titles, which I wouldn't recommend:

AC4 is notoriously short (most missions are 30 seconds long) but has really good visual styling. The game plays better than ACFA, but the story translations were bad, and the story is the best part of ACFA anyway, so ACFA is recommended instead.

ACV is basically an identical, but much worse version of ACVD. Lots of bugs, less gameplay, many online-only features (and the servers were shut down a while ago) and really bad framerate problems.

So:
>Verdict Day if you enjoy a more strategic / tactical challenge or want to do any multiplayer.

>For Answer if you want to feel cool and just have a casual single player game to play for a bit.

>4 if you have already played For Answer and want more of that

>V is not recommended

Most people are emulating the PS2 / PSP games these days. You're not stealing money from From Soft by pirating anyway, since those games have to be bought used (and were sold via Agetec / 505 games, not directly from From Software).

If you do get the PS2 games, AC3 or AC Nexus are the recommended starting points. AC2 is also a good place to start, but it can be pretty buggy.

Newbie here. Getting used to the boost mechanics is a bit weird, and I still don't understand what the heck recon probes are for. I might have a faulty controller, cuz I just keep launching them over and over.

I like that this game seems huge, but I don't know yet. My TV is small so the letters are tiny and impossible to read, but I love the game feel. Boosting feels incredible when I get it right.

The ACs all look really muddy so far. I hope the other parts are cooler.

I love that you just explode for leaving the combat area. I'm excited.
>>
>>175051234
Addendum: I enjoy gatling guns and beam swords. Jesus. Does everything in this game feel so mighty?
>>
>>175051234
Recon units are basically scanners, they allow you to detect nearby enemies and see them through walls in Scan mode. Consider switching to the tracking type that follows you around, they're easier to use.
You should try to read the text, it's important to at least see the stats on your parts.
About the parts looking like junk, well they are junk. The starter parts are all garbage, buy new ones ASAP. Tune your weapons for max damage as a rule of thumb.
>>
>>175051234

Boost mechanics are pretty simple. There's 3 kinds of boost:

>Walking = "Slow Walk" = Default
This is just moving on the ground with boosters not active. You shouldn't ever walk unless you're trying to aim precisely at something very far away.

>Normal boost = "Running" = (Press boost button once (stays active) and move around, does not drain EN)
This is just normal movement while your booster are active. It drains no energy, but it accelerates slowly. Make sure boosters are on (always keep them on) and just move forward. You'll boost forward, and slowly gain speed.

>High Boost = "Dodging / Rolling" (Press High Boost button once, hold for Kick attack, drains lots of EN)
This is your dodge, basically. You can also use it to position yourself. It lets out a flash and a burst of speed. How long you hold the button down affects how far you go, but if you hold it down too long your mech will "kick". This is a powerful melee attack, but leaves you vulnerable. So practice trying to tap for dodge, and hold for kick. You'll get the timing down eventually.

>Glide Boost = Sprinting (press glide boost, hold a direction, stays active until you move backwards, press again, or run out of EN)
This is basically your sprint. It's a special boost that you can only do while on the ground. Pressing Glide Boost basically gives you normal boost but with high boost levels of speed, and drains a lot of EN.

>Boost Drive = Jump / Walljump (Press or hold boost drive button)
This is your Jump and wall jump button. It's a high boost that pushes off of a wall, and uses very little energy. If you're on the ground, you'll jump up. But if you're near a wall, you'll "kick" off of it in the direction you're pointing (or straight up, if you aren't pressing a direction). This is the most EFFICIENT way to move, as it basically gives you a free high boost.
>>
>>175053459
*5 kinds of boost

It seems complicated but it's really simple and easy once you get the hang of it. Walljump when you can, glide boost when you can't, high boost to dodge or to get closer to a wall. Hold high boost to kick.
>>
>>175052750
>>175051234
Type that follows you around: Easier to use, good for avoiding being surprised by enemies

Type that you shoot out forward to investigate an area: Better to use because they give you direction the enemy is currently located in, but harder to use (you have to have a feel for the range of the recon)

Type that moves up and stays in place: Would be best to use but only if you're not moving anywhere and enemies are coming toward you instead, aka, almost never happens so rarely worth using.

Aaliyah is actually a hebrew name, it's just not very common. There was a singer named Aaliyah a while ago, and middle-east-sounding names were kind of popular around that time, especially with black people (think of all the black guys out there named muhammad). I think it's a pretty cool name honestly.

I remember back when AC4 first came out, the names for a lot of parts were different. They changed them with a patch because of some concern of them being religiously offensive. A lot of 4th gen parts are named after various hebrew or muslim, or turkish words. Anatolia is part of turkey and most of the game takes place in China or the Middle East

Honestly there's not a lot of ways for AC to be made easier. Most of the main story in the games is pretty easy, the difficulty comes from requiring players actually read things.

In order to make the game easier you'd have to go the ACFA route and basically give players top tier equipment right away, remove monetary restrictions, and turn all the enemies into absolute cardboard.

"Instead of problems that require thinking, just add repetition / narrow timing / forced trial and error in order to make the game take longer to beat" = artificial difficulty

There's literally no artificial difficulty in AC other than maybe the AI having H+ in ACLR. All the difficulty in AC is in working with the controls and understanding the stats, which is the opposite of artificial.

People talk about artificial difficulty a lot with dark souls, especially dark souls 2, because boss health got a lot higher, you took more damage, and the game threw more enemies at you at once, instead of more creative challenges.

But really it's just a trigger word now for people who feel that it's the game's fault they are dying.

Well giving the setting (Player character being a merc and the usual enemy AC is another merc hired in the last moment to stop you) and how common ocurrence it is, I see this to encorage to be ready to any situation, for example, what if a mission is about snipping some drones before they can reach a target, but after waves of them a AC appears trying to stop you, for a newbie that maybe made a full sniper build to cheese the mission, will be taken by the surprise, specially if they arent good using snipers on AC fights; but someone that has play this shit for a while, would go to the mission ready for something like that, maybe even with backup weapons just to discard the snipers when the AC show ups, even at the first try.

I would automatically lose at timeout because he had more health than me remaining.

I just sat on a highway overpass looking up at this smug asshole just dancing around on the edge of the building because autocannons have really short range and couldnt do fuck all to hurt him. But then I totally forgot I had the FUCK YOU cannon strapped ot my back and folded that bitch out and one shot him with it as he mindlessly danced back and forth on the building ledge.

Am I the only one that enjoys Nine Breaker? The randomly generated opponents gimmick is great.

How similar are acv and acvd?

If someone did really well in acv would they be able to expect that skill to translate well into acvd?

How similar are acv and acvd?
ACVD is the same as ACV except:
>Everything is 10-20% Faster with more energy recovery
>The part balance is dramatically improved
>the obviously OP weapons got patched
>there are weapon arms now, allowing the use of heavy weapons without ready position, but it will dramatically lower your defenses.
>There is now an AI programming feature (UNAC) that lets you replace teammates with customized AI ACs.
>Weapon tuning isn't online-only

Other than that, the mechanics are the same. The games use the same engine stats are tweaked for balanced but mechanics are the same.

As for single player, pretty much all the same elements are there, except the story missions are shorter in ACVD without multiple garage visits.

>If someone did really well in acv would they be able to expect that skill to translate well into acvd?

I assume you mean multiplayer, in which case, yes.

However, ACVD's metagame is much more well-developed, and the balance is tighter so that there are fewer obvious exploits / abuse-able tactics. There's also fewer newbies running around, and everyone playing has way more experience than you do now. You can still do well, but don't expect to be winning more than you lose when you pick the games back up.

What are some good weapons for a medium light weight build in close to medium range? I've loved gatling guns since ac3 and I know they were pretty weak in Acv after the nerfs due to how armor rating works.
>>
>>175299304
>good weapons
Hit-and-run dominates ACVD meta. Shotguns, pulse guns, the 3-shot battle rifle, and high-speed-missile both work well. Shotguns and High Speed Missile are popular on lights because they can stun heavies, causing armor break (reduces armor to 80%) which lets them compete with heavier weapons for damage output. A solid HSM>SG+PG combo can wreck 8-12k AP in one hit if they're particularly vulnerable.

Sustained fire /pressure is harder to pull off than hit and run, the best combos are the 1505 damage rifle + HSM, plasma gun rushes, dual battle rifles, or medium missile pressure. But this is just my experience, everyone will argue for different combos so try what works for you.

Thankfully in ACVD, pretty much at least 1 to 3 weapons in each class are viable for pvp, as long as you build around them properly

> pretty weak in Acv
There was one gatling gun that was absolutely OP in ACV even after the nerfs, but it's terrible in ACVD.

watch some competitive fights from the various tournaments to get a feel for what's popular / effective. Helamasa is a good example of how to play a lightweight
